Accidents School accidents must be reported to the office as soon as possible. These include any accidents occurring on school property or during school sponsored events at other sites. An accident report must be fully completed by a member of the staff and duly submitted to the Administration. Any injuries sustained for any reason must be reported to the office and documented.

Activities Eligibility At School Expectations 1. Being part of a school team or co-curricular activity is a privilege, not a right. 2. Every student must demonstrate that he/she deserves to participate in an activity. This policy presents guidelines to achieve this goal. 3. Any student who is not well enough to attend all classes on a particular day or is under suspension may not participate in any co-curricular activity on the same day (including school dances). 4. School equipment is expensive and school budgets are very tight; all equipment and facilities must be treated with care. 5. Since teachers are giving of their time freely, your co-operation and support are expected. 6. You represent your school, teachers, teammates, and community during an activity. Your behaviour must always be beyond question. Courtesy and fair play are expected at all times, in all ways. Principles: 1. We believe that participation in school-sponsored activities enhances student character, respect, and responsibility. 2. We encourage all students to participate in school-sponsored activities. Students will sometimes be excused from classes in order to participate in activities – this does not lessen the student’s responsibility to classroom teachers. Students are expected to make contact with their teachers to receive homework, special instructions, or assignments. Requirements: 1. Academics, attendance, behaviour in classes: Each subject teacher’s signature on the consent form indicates that the teacher approves participation in a co-curricular activity based on:  Acceptable course achievement;  Acceptable class attendance;  Acceptable classroom behaviour. 2. Attendance: Any unexplained absence (skip) may result in ineligibility from all school-sponsored co-curricular activities 3. Behaviour: If suspended from school, the student is ineligible from all school sponsored coSacred Heart CHS School Policies (rev. Jul 2014)

curricular activities. If suspended a second time, the student may be ineligible for all activities for the rest of the current semester. 4. School Fees: All school registration fees and school textbook or library fees must be paid to the bursar prior to students being able to try out for or participate in any co-curricular activity.

Address Change Changes in home address, telephone number and other pertinent personal information must be reported immediately to the Attendance Office by completing the appropriate form.

Admissions School is open to students (grades 9-12) whose parents or guardians live in Sacred Heart's attendance zone. An interview with the admission's Vice-Principal may be required of the student and parents. Respect for the Catholic Faith is necessary and therefore students are required to follow religious study courses while enrolled at Sacred Heart.

Assemblies These will be held for special events during the school year, including liturgical celebrations. Students are required to enter and leave the assemblies in an orderly fashion. During the assembly, students must behave, express approval in a positive manner and respect the presenter(s) at all times. All students must attend the assemblies in complete uniform and sit in the assigned area with their class. Please respect the spirit of the event by not leaving for breaks.

Athletic Expectations 

  

Students must diligently strive to maintain a satisfactory academic standing within the school. It is expected that student athletes maintain a passing average and have NO MORE than one failure in any semester. Students who do not attain these minimal standards may, after review, forfeit their right to participate. Students participating in Sacred Heart athletic teams must pay $80. This includes the Athletic Banquet Fee. This fee will help alleviate the high cost of transportation, officials and tournament fees. Students will also submit a $50.00 post-dated cheque which will be returned upon receiving their laundered uniform within two weeks of the end of the season. Students participating in athletics are expected to be positive role models for the rest of the student body. Athletes, therefore, must maintain the proper code of behaviour both on and off the court. Students suspended from school will be

automatically suspended from team play until a conference with the vice principal, Phys. Ed. Department Head and the coach of his/her team occurs. Students must respect all guidelines set down by the team coach regarding attendance at practices, practice time, team rules, etc. A student/athlete may represent Sacred Heart on only one major sport and one minor sport during any one playing season. Being a member of a school team or a co-curricular activity is a privilege - not a right. Every student must demonstrate to the teacher advisor that he/she deserves to participate in an activity. Failure to do so could result in suspension from the activity or athletic program. Students who skip a class or are absent on a game day, are not permitted to participate at a game after school that day.

Attendance Regular attendance on the part of students is a key component of the learning process and of the evaluation of student achievement. It is even more critical to students' success in a school organized on a semester basis. This is because each course covers its material in a more concentrated manner - i.e. over five rather than ten months. If the process of learning is disrupted by irregular attendance, learning experiences are lost that cannot be entirely regained. Students who habitually miss class will suffer in the evaluation process because their participation and achievement cannot be fully assessed. Indeed, there is such a close relationship between attendance and a student's academic success that we insist on each student's attendance at all classes every day-unless of course the absence is authorized by parents and/or teachers. Even in the case of authorized absences, caution is necessary on the part of students and parents. It may very well be a wise decision to refrain from participation in a field trip or an activity in order to attend classes. PLEASE NOTE: 1. According to Ministry guidelines a student who misses 15 consecutive days (3 weeks) without the student or parent contacting the school about the nature of absence, will be removed from the school's enrollment register. 2. If a student must be absent the following procedure is to be used:  If a student is absent from school, a parent should call the school in the morning to advise us. Call 905-895-3340 and leave a message. A note signed by the parent/guardian, stating the reason for the absence is to be brought to the homeroom teacher on the first day of the student's return. The student is expected to take the initiative in finding out from the teacher of any class missed what work was done or assigned. This work must be completed. This includes all absences (illness, early leaves, excursions, extra-curricular activities, etc.)  If the student must leave early (special appointments etc.) a note signed by the parent/guardian stating the reason is to be brought to the attendance office prior to 8:15 in the morning. Office personnel will issue the student

an Early Leave Slip to be presented to the subject teacher at the appropriate time.  If the student is late for school (after 8:30), or re-enters the school from an "early leave", he/she must report to the attendance office before going to regular classes. Office personnel will issue an Admit to Class slip to be shown to each subject teacher at the beginning of each class period.  In the event of illness or accident during the school day, the attendance office is to be notified immediately. Students must not remain unattended or leave school without permission. Students are not to remain in the washroom when ill. They should report to the Attendance Office where the appropriate care is available. Failure to report to this office can result in detentions or suspensions. 3. A student leaving the school during the day FOR ANY REASON must report to the Attendance Office. Permission to leave (in emergencies when a student does not have a note) may be granted only by administration after consulting parents.  Any exceptions to this must be approved by the appropriate vice-principal. Grade 12 students are free to use the library or the cafeteria and are free to leave school during spares and lunch periods.  All Grade 12 students who have a period 1 spare must sign in with the period 2 teacher. Students should note that they will not be allowed to leave and re-enter the property at a later time on the same day unless the principal or one of the vice-principal's has approved re-entry. 4. Parents/students are requested not to schedule family holidays or summer jobs during the school year especially during final evaluation periods in January and June or exam periods. This makes it extremely difficult for students to succeed in an academic program. Assignments cannot adequately substitute for the loss of the detailed instructions peculiar to the classroom. 5. Subject attendance checks are taken by teachers at the end of the day. Discrepancies re absences are reported to the parents/guardians on the first event. After a second unauthorized absence, teachers will complete a discrepancy report and report to the appropriate vice-principal.

Bullying, Harassment and Threats See Code of Conduct for Sacred Heart students and YCDSB Policy 223 at www.ycdsb.ca.

Buses Transportation is provided for students within the established boundaries. The service is a privilege and not a right. Responsible behaviour is required at all times when riding on the school bus. Students are expected to comply with bus company regulations and school board policies posted on the buses. Busing privilege will be removed or suspended at the discretion of the administration. Students are not allowed to ride on other buses than their own. Sacred Heart CHS School Policies (rev. Jul 2014)

6

Bus Loading Pupils must be aware that serious or repeated misconduct will be recorded. They must also be aware that such conduct may result in loss of the privilege to ride a school bus. Cars parked in and near the staff/student parking lot cannot move through the bus loading area. Cars exiting the main door parking lot must yield to teachers on bus supervision.

Code of Conduct This chart addresses a variety of expected behaviours for Sacred Heart students.

Chapel The Chapel is available to all students for quiet prayer and meditation. Mass will be available through a homeroom schedule and times will be posted.

Computers Copyright is to be respected of software as well as ownership jurisdictions. Each student is expected to comply with the Internet Policy. Misuse such as downloading of game or chatroom software may result in internet privileges being withdrawn and/or suspensions.

Confidentiality The fundamental principle with regard to confidentiality is that the student's right to privacy should be safeguarded as much as possible. However, there are circumstances that are legally binding and information must be disclosed. For example: child abuse, threats of self-harm, danger to the physical or psychological health of a student and pregnancy under the age of sixteen.

Continuing Education (Summer/Night School/Distance Education) Registration is available through a Guidance counsellor only by appointment. The Principal's permission is required.

Co-op Education Co-op is an alternative method of earning credits by which students combine in-school instruction with on the job experience. It provides students with the opportunities to discover their skills and career interest at the work place while they are still in school. The student must be 16 years old and must be registered in senior level courses. School administration must grant final approval for a student to enter the Co-op program.

Course Selection and Changes The course selection process will begin in the month of February. Students must select courses with the advice and consent of their parents and the school. This includes the advice of the teacher, the department head, the guidance counsellor, and the principal. The deadline for course changes will be at the end of the first full week in May of the current academic school year. The only changes permitted after this date will be those resulting from summer school results, which will be processed during the last week in August. Some level/program changes may be processed during September and February to accommodate failures from the previous semester and level of learning, but only after consultation with the department head, guidance counsellor and administration. Otherwise, students may not drop any course during the school year. Students in grades 9, 10, and 11 must be enrolled in 8 full courses or their equivalent. Grade 12 must carry at least a minimum of 6 full courses which must include a religion course. Grade 12 students are limited to one spare per semester if:  the student has a minimum of 24 credits by the Grade 12 year  the student has a minimum of 30 credits beyond the grade 12 diploma requirements. The Ministry of Education has put disclosure of marks in place for students enrolled in grade 11 and 12 courses. At mid-term reporting periods grade 12 students may be permitted to withdraw from courses within 5 days of mid-term reports being issued without fear of disclosure. Students who remain in the course after the 5-day deadline and fail the course will have this mark retained on their academic transcript. Students who withdraw from the course after the 5-day deadline will also have their mid-term mark recorded on their transcript. Please consult guidance for further clarification.

Detentions Detentions are assigned through the offices of the Vice-principals and by class teachers. They are served during lunch periods. Students may be assigned after school detentions in some circumstances and are expected to serve them. Failure to serve these may result in suspensions.

Dropping of Courses It is expected that students will continue to study all of their selected subjects throughout each semester. However, in exceptional circumstances, senior students will be permitted to remove a course from their timetable with approval of a parent/guardian and the school providing that they have 3 remaining courses and currently have 24 courses achieved. Sacred Heart CHS School Policies (rev. Jul 2014)

8

Removal of courses will only be permitted up to the last Friday prior to Christmas break in semester 1 and up to the Friday prior to the end of May in semester 2. See note on disclosure deadlines under course changes. After the first month of each semester, teacher recommended class changes may be accommodated if space exists in a class.

Employment Students who are employed during the week and/or weekends must use time wisely so as to be successful at school and at work. No student should work more than fifteen hours a week.

Evaluation and Assessment Evaluation helps the student identify academic strengths and weaknesses and provides direction for future developments. Information regarding student progress and achievement is available for both students and parents. Marks are determined from class work, projects, essays, tests, exams and other methods appropriate to the course. A complete evaluation breakdown is provided at the beginning of the semester in each course. Students are expected to be aware of their strengths and areas of difficulty during the semester and seek help from teachers as needed. (See Board Policies and Guidelines “Assessment and Evaluation)

Evening work Students who have projects due using school equipment are not allowed in the building after school hours without a teacher present and supervising. (Insurance and security etc. are involved.)

Examinations and Final Evaluations Examinations and summative evaluations take place at the end of each semester, January and June respectively. The dress code is in effect during the writing of examinations. Students who have two exams during the same time period will write one examination in the conflict room at another time. Students may leave school at the conclusion of the examination(s) being held that day. Transportation is provided and scheduled according to the examination period. Extra time will not be given should the student arrive late for an examination. Special notice should be taken of the fact that examinations cannot be scheduled for individual students at times other than those indicated on the examination schedules. All absences for examinations due to illness must have a medical certificate, otherwise a mark of zero will be assigned. All other reasons for absences (i.e. death in the family, etc.) will be considered by the administration on an individual basis. Sacred Heart CHS School Policies (rev. Jul 2014)

9

Please do not schedule holidays, appointments or job placements during exams. Students who did not write an exam will be required to write another exam on a later date during the schedule if they are absent for valid reasons as outlined above.

Exam Alternate Day If an exam is cancelled due to inclement weather, the exams set for that day will occur at a later scheduled time.

Extended Vacation Policy Students are requested to book holidays during the regularly scheduled breaks as per the school calendar. For students requesting an extended vacation of 5 or more days, a form must be completed to the grade level VP and submitted no later than two weeks prior to the start of the vacation period. The form can be obtained from the attendance office.

Facilities All of us, every student and staff member, should be proud of the appearance of our school. The condition of the building and the grounds is a responsibility which we should bear. Certainly, it is to our advantage to help keep our environment a clean and pleasant one in which to be. After all, we do spend a great deal of our time here each day. We must recognize that it is our facility and its state that affects the quality of our living. Students are asked to observe the following suggestions: Place scrap paper and other refuse in the green receptacles provided for recycling. Do not deface or mark in any manner walls or furniture. Report any damage to school property or equipment to the office. (Willful damage will result in suspension and re-admittance will depend upon appropriate restitution.) Refrain from throwing paper etc. outside of campus.

Fees Student registration fee is $85.00 for Grade 9 & 10’s. Includes a combination lock and use of a locker, student identification card, school yearbook, activity fee, guest speakers/presentations and retreats $85.00 for Grade 11-12 – Yearbook, registration fee, identification cards, student agenda handbook, yearbook, guest speakers and presentations. A bus cancellation message will also be available at www.schoolbuscity.com Although the buses may be cancelled, if possible, the school will remain open for students and staff, unless otherwise specified.

Lockers/Locks All students are assigned a locker. Each student is expected to keep his/her locker in good repair. See Code of Conduct on page 29. Special locks are distributed to grade 9 students. It is expected that they are used throughout the 4 years. A new lock can be purchased at the main office.

Neighbourhood Relations It is important that our school maintain a good relationship with our community and our subdivision. For this reason we request that students not congregate in, on, or around our neighbours' property, nor trespass or litter or smoke on private property. This includes both entrances (Crusader Way and Lemar Streets), bus stops, or side streets before and after day or night school functions.

Parking Parking is a privilege not a right. Parking permits will be on a first come basis for senior students, with priority given to 12's and special needs (in this order). Day passes are available for those students who do not regularly drive to school. These daily passes can be purchased in the Attendance Office for $3.00. All students must abide by the parking regulations:  Only students who have registered their cars with the school and have been issued a parking permit are permitted to park on school property. Permits must be visibly displayed.  Vehicles are not to be used during the school day except by senior students who are permitted to leave or return to school.  Driving speed of 10 km/hr must be maintained when driving through school property. Students are not to congregate in or about cars during the school day.  The school accepts no responsibility for any damage or loss to the car or its contents.  Students who obtain a parking permit must park their vehicles in the student parking lot ONLY. Failure to do so may result in loss of parking privileges. Cars illegally parked or who not have a parking tag prominently displayed will be ticketed by the Parking Control unit of the Town of Newmarket. Students should observe that the garbage disposal area, visitors and handicapped parking spots are out of bounds. Please note that misuse of private vehicles (e.g. "squealing of tires, careless driving, etc.) will result in the suspension of parking privileges. Drivers should note that traffic is not Sacred Heart CHS School Policies (rev. Jul 2014)

permitted to enter or leave the bus area during dismissal time-i.e. from 2:20 to 2:40 p.m. Drivers must obey supervising teachers on bus duty. Failure to comply with the above rules will result in loss of the right to park on school property and/or police intervention. Suspensions may result after the first warning.

Personal Electronic Device (PED) All personal electronic devices (PED) shall be kept out of sight, turned off and not used during school instructional time or in classroom/hallway areas. (see Code of Conduct for Sacred Heart Students and Board Policy 222)

Personal Property The school cannot be held responsible for loss or theft. Students are responsible for the security of their own personal property. The following common sense suggestions should be followed:  Do NOT give your locker combination to anyone, not even your best friend.  Do NOT share lockers with friends.  Leave valuables in your locker; do not carry them around during the day. During Physical Education classes, leave wallets, watches and other valuable locked in your locker. Do not take these items to the change room. Staff are not responsible for their loss.  Do not bring large sums of cash to school. If, for some reason, you must do so, then leave it with the office staff for secure storage in the school vault. Students and parents should be aware that the school/board does NOT carry insurance on any items brought to school by students or teachers for project or display purposes. We do of course, take reasonable precautions, but if an item is broken or stolen, it is not covered by insurance. Bicycles and cars are NOT covered by Board Insurance while on school property and should also be locked securely. Write your name in all textbooks and notebooks and label all items of personal attire whether gym uniforms or regular school uniforms. Report any damage or graffiti to your classroom teacher immediately

Posting of Flyers Students must obtain permission from the administration before posting or distributing of any and all advertisements. Flyers which do not have approval will be removed automatically.

Pregnancy See Guidance Department for counselling and pamphlets on Board policy.

Prom Potential graduates (Gr. 12) who have attended Sacred Heart in the present calendar year are eligible to attend the Graduation Prom. School regulations re: behaviour, smoking, drugs, alcohol etc. are in effect during the prom. School Administration reserves the right to restrict access to any/all school functions.

Rights and Responsibilities of Students and Teachers See Code of Conduct.

School Resource Officers York Region Police Officers visit the school and are a part of the school team. The officers are available for consultation and educational resource for all members of the school community on matters involving the law. Students wishing to speak to the officers may leave a note in Attendance. The officers are also available to investigate infractions of the law at the request of school staff and students.

Student Crimestoppers Students who have information regarding school thefts, vandalism, assaults or other crimes may feel inclined to report to 1 800 387-8477. All calls are anonymous and complete anonymity is enforced.

Students 18 Years of Age and Older While we do recognize that students who reach the age of 18 are considered adults in the eyes of the law, we also feel an obligation to keep all educational partners (parents, students, staff) informed about school-related issues. Accordingly it is our school policy to require the same communication with parents of students 18 years of age and older as with parents of younger students - UNLESS we receive WRITTEN notice from students indicating otherwise. Such notices are to be brought to the Attendance Office where they will be kept on file.

Student Accident Insurance The accident insurance covers the students while at school or during school related activities. This insurance is available for all students. All claims are made DIRECTLY to the insurance company by the family. This coverage is excellent for those involved in

sports and is inexpensive. Extra coverage (Blue Cross or Other) should be bought for students on out of country excursions.

Student I.D. Card The student picture I.D. card is issued to each student. This card has a student picture to identify the Sacred Heart student and is required for school events, transportation, library use and other school related activities. The student must carry this card at all times.

Suspensions A Principal may suspend a pupil because of persistent truancy (skipping), persistent opposition to authority, habitual neglect of duty, the willful destruction of school property, the use of profane or improper language or conduct injurious to the moral tone of the school or to the physical (i.e. smoking) or mental well-being of others (i.e. harassment) in the school.

Summer School Acceleration and remedial summer school courses will likely be offered during the month of July. Details and application forms are usually available in May, and registration information will be provided to all students and parents by the Guidance Department.

Telephones Because of the demands placed on school telephone lines, it is not possible to permit students to use these lines to make personal calls. Only emergency phone messages from PARENTS will be taken for students during school hours. Classes will not be interrupted for messages unless there is a family emergency.

Textbook, Learning Materials, Equipment The school provides all students with their textbooks free of charge for each course. Students are responsible for the condition of these texts. The loss or damage of these will result in charges. Textbooks MUST be returned at the end of each semester. Do sign your name in the School Stamp area for all texts assigned to you. You will be asked to repay the full school replacement cost or your report card, transcripts and texts for future courses will be withheld.

Transfers, Withdrawals Students who transfer from Sacred Heart or who are withdrawing/retiring from school must contact the school administration as soon as possible. You are required to complete certain documents, return textbooks, library materials and fulfill all obligations in Sacred Heart CHS School Policies (rev. Jul 2014)

15

Guidance. Addresses, phone numbers, emergency procedure forms and bus routes are to be changed in the Attendance Office as they occur. A note from home should accompany these changes.

Uniform All Sacred Heart students are expected to be in full uniform every day, unless it is a civies day. See Code of Conduct for more information.

Use of School Areas To effect the orderly climate mentioned in the introduction (i.e. allow for rights of others in classroom, activities etc.), it is necessary to regulate the flow of people. Thus, students will be expected to comply with the following: First period begins at 8:20 am. Students must be IN class by that time. Classrooms will be opened by teachers at 8:00 am. Of course, students are welcome in their rooms from that point on. A warning bell will sound at 8:06 am indicating that students should proceed to their period A class. Warning music will start at 8:15 am. Students are expected to move directly from one class to the next. Stops at the water fountain, lockers, washrooms or for chats with friends result in unnecessary delays to the beginning of classes. A five minute travel period is provided between classes; students are expected to be in class by the end of this five minute period. Books for the morning classes should be picked up before school and books for the afternoon classes should be picked up at the end of lunch. Students must have texts and/or materials for their classes. Students should not go to lockers between classes. Students who are not in a scheduled class or in a teacher supervised activity must stay out of instructional areas (classrooms and gymnasium)., hallway areas. "In bound" areas include the cafeteria and library. During lunch periods, locker visits may be made only during the first and last five minutes. For safety (and legal) reasons, students are not permitted to use the classrooms, gymnasium or stage unless they are under the supervision of a staff member. The staff room and teacher work areas are for staff use only. Students are not to enter these areas.
