Celebrating Nearly a Century Together at Acadia Hall
In the heart of Sackville stands Acadia Hall, a beloved landmark that has been bringing the community together for gatherings and celebrations for almost a century. More than a building, this hall has witnessed the unity, resilience, and common dreams of the Sackville community.
According to Linda Hefler, a dedicated volunteer with Acadia Recreation Club, the hall’s story began in 1924 when five locals met at the Temperance Hall on Old Sackville Road. With a $100 loan from Court Acadia and unwavering community support, they embarked on a mission to construct a true community centre. From door-to-door
campaigns rallying neighbours to contribute building supplies, to community picnics and spirited ball games held on the property, the journey to bring Acadia Hall to life was a testament to the commitment of the people of Sackville.
Acadia Hall was completed in 1926 and has since been a venue for weddings, baby showers, elections, dances, parties, meetings, talent shows, and performances by local artists, including legendary Hank Snow. Hefler fondly remembers hosting dances with her parents Graham and Marge Hefler in the 1990s, creating cherished memories for attendees. “They were awesome dances and everyone would show up,” says Hefler. “I grew up playing ball on the women’s field behind Acadia Hall, which is now Acadia Park.”
In 2011, Acadia Recreation Club volunteers took on the significant task of transforming the underutilized ballfields on the property behind the hall into Acadia Park, an outdoor space fully maintained and operated by Acadia Recreation Club volunteers. With walking trails, gardens, an accessible playground, and a bandstand, it’s a cherished spot for residents of all ages. Acadia Recreation Club volunteers generously donate their time to not only care for the hall and grounds but also to keep rental costs affordable for community groups and residents.
Acadia Hall continues to host numerous events, including concerts and a farmers’ market every Saturday morning, with a mission of bringing people together. The community has made the most of the park and hall through hosting everything from birthday parties, quilting gatherings, yoga and tai chi classes to live music events, makers’ markets, photoshoots, and much more.

As for plans for the future, Hefler says, “We are gaining momentum with new younger volunteers, and we will continue to improve on what we have here in the building and the park. Additionally, we’ll explore ways to ensure everyone in the community feels that our property is a safe, healthy place to bring families and friends together to enjoy the space.”
As Acadia Hall soon celebrates its 100th anniversary in 2026, it’s a time to honour its past, embrace the future, and extend heartfelt gratitude to the volunteers over the past century who have dedicated their time and effort to create and maintain this incredible space for our community.
