P A S T E V E N T S SUPERVENTION Workshop 2007 In SACES’ 7th workshop, the commi ee decided to change the normally introvert character of the workshop and to expose it to the public eye, with the aim of provoking a reac on. Par cipants tackled por ons of the controversial chalet area of the Sliema seafront. The separate groups constructed interven ons to improve the public space they were assigned. thus this workshop also aimed at contribu ng to a par cular, problema c context. The projects were constructed at Fort Manoel and transported and installed on site.

THE CITY Workshop 2008 The workshop in October 2008 was held in collabora on with the Valle a Rehabilita on Project. It aimed to provide and encourage a student’s crea ve perspec ve to several spaces along Republic Street. This workshop a racted a lot of a en on from the media with images and videos being published in various prominent news sources. Some pictures of the projects were also chosen to form part of The Times annual calender.

20th CENTURY SACES Workshop 2010 For the folding of the new decade, SACES decided that this annual workshop should be dedicated to the previous century. The students were organised in 10 groups, each represen ng a par cular decade. Each group had to create an installa on represen ng their respec ve decade by implemen ng their knowledge of its history and mentality. The loca on was at the Lazzare o at Manoel Island.


THE EPILOGUE Workshop 2012 Taking inspira on from the apocalyp c theories going around at the me, SACES gave the students a brief which led them to explore what forms of architecture might take a er an apocalyp c scenario. Held at the stunning Fort Ricasoli, the loca on was very conduc ve for crea vity, and indeed represented the abandoned locale one may find himself working in a er a natural disaster.

CAMPUS INSTALLATIONS Easter Workshop 2008 This year’s Easter workshop focused around producing installa ons which would then be displayed around various areas on campus. Since the project coincided with the aims of the KSU quad Renova on Programme, we joined forces with KSU to form what proved to be a very successful event. The quality of the finished installa ons belied the fact that they were completed in a weekend. The students’ work was given coverage by NET News.

ANTEMORTEM Workshop Party 2013 This year’s much an cipated SACES party took place at the Manikata Barracks, which was the same venue as the Autumn Workshop, Bulk Refuse, where the aim was to produce installa ons out of recycled materials. With about 1000 people a ending, the party was a great success. The party was widely praised on social media and le University students buzzing about it for weeks.


TRANSMUTE Workshop 2014 Transmute -­‐ the ac on of changing or the state of being changed into another form. Given the theme, the groups had a 1.5m cube constraint in which they would create an installa on to illustrate transi on from a par cular state of ma er to another, this theme proved successful, leaving students thinking and planning hard on how to demonstrate such transforma ons. This workshop took place at an abandoned school in Floriana.

IMMORTALISING HOME Archi-­‐Babble This debate concerned the approach of conserva on used on various sites on the island. Guest speakers included MDA president, Sandro Chetcu and Ministry Restora on Director, Norbert Ga . Many students had an opinion about this topic and the points raised by the moderators. A healthy debate led to not only discussing different interven ons on various landmarks, but also the ques oning of the Maltese mentality towards architecture.

48 Easter Workshop 2015 This par cular workshop took the form of a design compe on. The SACES team collaborated with EASA to give the opportunity to par cipants to propose a design for a canopy for the EASA 2015 workshop, which will host around 500 students at Valle a. The winning canopy would be constructed and used during the event All the groups came up with interes ng and innova ve designs which made it difficult for the team of judges consis ng of well known architects and professionals in the field, to choose the winning design.
