21 Synopsis of Decade The 1970’s was so much more than the disco that everyone associates the years with. The 1970’s were filled with music, artists, models, fashion, and so much more. Technology in the 1970’s was based on televisions for the most part. In the 1980’s, specifically 1978, 98% of American households had at least one television. This was a big introduction to the field of technology in the 1970’s. The 1970’s also improved on their video games and also many calculators. The 1970’s began with having Nixon as their president and ended with Ford as their president. The years were filled with advocates for women’s rights. The years brought women together to fight for women’s rights, equal pay, equal opportunities. The 70’s were also filled with movements for gay rights. This is a huge step in progressing for rights and this all occurred in the 70’s. Heading to the section for movies, the 1970 movies are the classics that we look upon today. The Godfather , The Godfather 2, Jaws, Rocky, The Exorcist, Carrie, The Muppet Movie, Scooby Doo Where are You, The Aristocats, and so many more movies and shows filled the decade. Stevie Wonder created too hits of the decade as he introduced his “Talking Book” album with one of his most famous songs, and also one of the most famous songs of the 70’s, superstition. The music categories in the 70’s included funk, soul, R&B, pop, hard rock, soft rock, punk rock, easy listening, and disco. Aretha Franklin , David Bowie, Queen, and The Eagles also filled the decade with their music. Pink Floyd was also relevant during these times, as they released an album. Elton John released 12 studio albums during the 1970’s which made him very well known during these years. Led Zeppelin released 8 studio albums during these times. Fashion was bold in the 1970’s. Jerry Hall was a famous model of the 70’s. Dione Von Frustenberg also introduced a famous women’s suit kimono inspired design. Halston was also a very big brand, one of the most significant, of the 1970’s. Yves Saint Laurent was also very relevant during the
22 1970’s. Women’s cosmetics captured blue eyeshadows and bold eye looks. A few of the cars that were being seen on the streets was the Pontiac Firebird, Alfa Romeo Montreal, Jaguar XJS, and Plymouth Superbird. The art, design, and photography of the 1970’s included pop art and bright yet soft colors. Man Ray was a famous photographer of the times. Vintage photography was also very relevant during the 1970’s. Pablo Picasso also created one of his famous paintings called “Seated Old Man” which is very important because he unfortunately passed away soon after. Clothing was very cheap ( or at least now we would consider it cheap ). A men’s suit would cost around $40 and a women’s summer dress would cost around $8. The 1970’s definitely made a huge impact and was a start of very important things, once again the women’s and gay movements, advocating for justice. The whole decade was filled with color and new introductions such as new cars, new music, and new clothing.
PERSONAL POV
My personal feelings on the 1970’s stand as follows. I am very happy that I got to dissect the decade and learn about the movements, fashion, cars, music, and art that filled the decade. When I used to think of the 70’s, all I would think of is the disco outfit, and now I see that there is an extreme different way the 70’s were actually in person. I personally loved learning about specifically the movements to advocating for women’s and gay rights and I felt that it is such a monumental moment that I did not know when the date was exactly , until I did research about it. Women were standing up and fighting for their rights and I saw that through society and through photography. I also loved learning that some of my favorite movies were filmed and shown during these years. Knowing when the movie was made and how significant it was makes it
23 much more fun to watch. I loved how the 70’s had many aspects such as the classic movies, the classic music. And the fashion that has followed us to the year 2021. I never knew that by the year 1978, 98% of people owned a television. That is such an interesting fact to know and was uncovered learning more about the 70’s.
