2020 Annual Annual Report Report 44 2020
Letter from the Board President Across our community and around the world, we will remember the year 2020 for the formidable challenges brought by the global pandemic. From the earliest days of the crisis, the leadership and staff at the San Antonio Botanical Garden responded with sharp attention to protecting the plants and operations of the Garden. Thanks to those efforts, our community had the Botanical Garden to turn to for much needed respite and tranquility, proving essential the importance of plants and nature to San Antonians and South Texans in 2020. Setting and Resetting the Course with New Aspirations The year began with optimism and excitement around shared leadership between the Board and new CEO, Sabina Carr, to complete the Garden expansion and build on that investment and to set a strategic direction for the next five years. When the pandemic struck, our energies shifted to meet the challenges of the crisis. Focused and calm in our approach, we reforcasted our business model and operating budgets. We prioritized employee safety and jobs, protection for our plant collections, and a deep determination to serve community children, adults, and families through creative educational programming. After a 45-day voluntary closure in March, we came back a reimagined institution with established safety protocols, innovative virtual learning programs, and a Reopening Operations Plan that was lauded by the American Public Gardens Association as a model for public gardens across the country. Energized in Service to Our Community We worked diligently to keep our Garden gates opened during the health crisis, and just as important, we concentrated on the future with renewed optimism as we planned for better days ahead. We extended our hours of operations, redesigned our website, opened the new Jardín restaurant, presented the blockbuster nature/ art exhibition, OrigamiintheGarden2, and launched our five-year strategic plan to create new opportunities and revenues through 2026. For the 2021 year, we committed to a major holiday event, Lightscape, and a once-in-alifetime exhibition featuring the exquisite home and garden of celebrated artist, Frida Kahlo. By the end of 2020, we had increased membership by 55% compared to year end for 2019, reduced expenses from the 2020 budget to 2020 actual by over $1.6 million, and exceeded our budgeted net operating surplus by $283,000. The challenges were considerable, but the community’s love for the Botanical Garden and belief in our mission inspired the exceptional work shown on the pages of this Annual Report. On behalf of the San Antonio Botanical Garden, thank you. Your support ensured a successful conclusion to this most memorable year.
