Hi! I’m Sabiha Mohsin, a fourth-year Interior Design student at Toronto Metropolitan University (Formerly known as Ryerson University). From a young age, I remember watching a show that revolved around a kid who acquires a magic pencil which can bring whatever is drawn from it to life. I always wished of owning a pencil like that. Something I never realized is that I already possessed the magic pencil I always wished of having; it is my ability to visualize and creatively think through many concepts and ideas that allow me to design and develop, eventually turning them into a reality. Through my passion for interior design, the dream I once had has come true. It has always been my passion to bring what’s on paper to life.

Throughout my time here, I had the opportunity to learn a variety of skills and explore my design style. I am eager to put my education and exploration into further use by attaining a career where I can continue to develop, grow and gain experience with the goal of becoming an Interior designer.

The building that sits on 100 Jarvis street has been adaptively re-used and revivied into a bookstore to bring an effective experience for the town residents of Fort Erie. The store aims to have flexibility with the use of rotating shelves, crafted from particleboard, assembled with a swivel mechanism which allows for a rotation. The merchandise is stored on the shelves within the volume, the top is served for displays and writing activities, and the rotation is integrated to accomodate various options for guiding pathways. The layouts and the rotation is controlled by the client to accomodate different layouts, carefully designed to provide a more flexible, interactive environment and experience within the space.

TO EXPLORE

Location: 215 Garrison Rd, Fort Erie, ON L2A 1M6

Software: AutoCAD | Rhino | Illustrator | Twinmotion | Enscape

Haven Motel is designed to be a place that welcomes students in need of a safe ‘haven’, it is there to serve you and your wellbeing in the times of distress. ‘To explore’ concept is a maze-like concept integrated into the residential room layouts to provide the students with a-mazing experience of finding spaces within the sculptural forms inspired by Richard Serra’s artwork. The layout is designed in a way to emphasize on the list of verbs that Serra developed in 1960s, describing the action verbs as relating to oneself, material, place, and process. To add on, ‘to explore’ layout gives a message to the students that with all kinds of twists and turns in life, there is always a way out, where you would find a new life to explore.

PELICAN

Software: AutoCAD | Illustrator | Rhino | Vray

Deviating from the traditional task lamp designs and making something that is aesthetically pleasing yet functional to be used in other environments. Inspired by a bird: A Pelican, using its long beak and slender neck as the main aesthetic of the lamp. The aesthetic is designed to mimic features of a Pelican, with the lamp base as the body, the forearm as the neck, edge of the arm as the face, arm as the Upper Mandible of the Beak, and LED strip light as the Lower Mandible of the Beak.

It has a rotating feature which allows the beak to tilt to 180 degrees allowing it to be used in environments that require indirect lighting. I incorporated the use of wood as this material adds warmth and elegance to the lamp while also being an easy material to work with, making the fabrication process more simplified as well as to prevent material pollution. I incorporated the use of Plexiglass for its durability as well as to experiment what type of a lighting effect it will achieve with the plexiglass surrounding the LED strip, adding an emphasis to its main aesthetic: The long beak.

HYPER REALISM

Location: My bathroom

Software: AutoCAD | Rhino | Illustrator

Material: Foamboard, Cardstock, Tape, Polymer Clay, Dowel, Acrylic Paint, Artifical plants, Cotton cloth

Selected Works

bathtub, enameled-steel

baseboard, wood painted white shoe molding, wood painted white tiles, polished marble

As the light enters through the opaque window, it bounces off onto the glossy, off white fixtures. These fixtures reflect back all the visible wavelengths of light that shine on them, hence, making the space seem brighter and in fact larger than its size. In contrast, the black, marble tiles work best in absorbing the wavelengths of the light energy, to balance out the overall brightness of the room.

To add on, the curtain and the mat gives off a sense of openness and airiness. The artificial plants help contribute to adding a nice pop of colour in the space. While the plants are artificial, they look alive being in this atmosphere with direct sun rays coming in, lighting up the whole bathroom. Through these elements, the atmosphere of being close to a lake while the weather is hot and sunny can be achieved in this type of setting or space

STAIR DETAIL

Location: Rua General Almério de Moura, 200, São Paulo, Brazil)

Materials: Foam board, Corner brace joints, Basswood dowels, Plywood, 3D printed human

The model captures the most prominent feature in Casa De Vidro: the staircase, focusing on the lower half of the stairs by making a section cut mid-way through the staircase. The detailing at the bottom explores the relationship between the angled support brackets and the wooden slabs by the use of corner braces to support holding each piece of the foam board. Dowels are used as railings. With the use of a human scale figure, helps determine the function and the overall scale of the model. Therefore, the model helps the viewer to interact with the staircase while also noticing an informative breakdown of the construction.

MOVING OFFICE

Time of future: 2033

Software: AutoCAD | Rhino | Twinmotion | Photoshop

Imagining a future where one is able to enjoy time with family or friends without having to stress about missing a work deadline, squeezing in productivity to make the most of their commute to the office, catch a meeting in the midst of a gridlock, and lastly, no more skipping breakfasts.

Looking into the year 2033, where time will be utilised efficiently, air pollution in the atmosphere will continue to decrease with the use of a Moving Office technology, a fuel efficient vehicle that uses solar panels on the roof to convert solar energy into electricity that allows the vehicle to run. The Moving Office will be programmed as an autopilot with set routes and destinations to help save time while you are rushing to get to office. The autopilot feature enables one to catch up on work or have me time to relax after a long day of work. The interior offers a range of activities related to work as well as ones to accomodate personal needs such as snacking, reading, and entertainment. Additionally, the use of hologram technology is added as an alternative for 3D physical model representations. Books will still remain a significant part of the future to maintain a right balance between technology and physical activities.

2033 will be a year with cleaner air and improved health in terms of both mental and physical. You no longer have to worry about cancelling or missing out on plans with family or friends so you can participate while also prioritize work deadlines. Time is interlinked with so many things we do. As the wise say, once it passes by, it can’t comeback. So we must manage it wisely.

DECORATING MY NAILS

Location: My home

Artificial nails, Gel polish, Acrylic paint, Nail tools

A passion for art and design turned into a small business of Press On Nails. Intrigued by the idea that a person can add more to their nails than just a single layer of colour. The concept of my logo comes from the idea of having a connection between my customers through nail art. The form of a lily, where one leaf represents me and my passion for nail art, and the other, representing my customers who will wear the designs I create. I design nails to be able to provide customers with a set that they can put on any occasion, anywhere at anytime, without the salon hassle.
