Understanding Barcodes You go into a store and look around. Suddenly you find the thing you are looking for. You check it side to side but you cannot find the price; instead you see some stripes like the zebra. These stripes are barcodes. The numbers written on them are called barcode numbers. What exactly are barcodes? A product barcode is simply a unique combination of twelve or thirteen digits marked on a product. This unique combination of numbers provides all the information of a product when scanned by a laser scanner. This type of information includes the product cost and the brand and type of the product. The usefulness of barcodes does not end here though. Barcodes can be used for tracking of a product and also monitoring its status in terms of availability in inventories. You should also know that barcodes need to be scanned at the picture quality of three hundred dots per minute at least. Any less than that and the image will get blurred for the laser to read the barcode. Moreover, many people don’t know that barcodes can be printed in any other color, not just black and white. However, black and white are most common colors used for printing barcodes because they show the highest contrast in the colored spectrum. You should also be aware that barcodes have to be printed on a specific size of paper because any less than that might also cause problems for the scanner to read them.
