Sabaidee readers, Although we have already passed through to the second month of 2016, the winter cold still overwhelms the town, especially in the Northern Provinces where the temperature descends to low degree celsius. I hope that all our readers can cope with the chilly conditions and maintain good health. In this issue, Sabaidee proudly presents interesting stories regarding Vientiane Capital in the morning. The morning charm of Vientiane that was once previously overlooked now has been revealed and will wake you up from bed to take in a breath of fresh air at the beginning of the day. Besides the cover story, you will find interesting stories from the artisan village in Luang Prabang and learn to make paper. Don’t forget to read the story of Penang - the World Heritage town in Malaysia. We hope that you will enjoy reading every letter and line in our magazine, which has been created with a strong will to support tourism in Lao PDR. If you have any comments, please feel free to contact us at 856 20 5884 8376 or Facebook Fan page at facebook.com/sabaideemagazine. Thank you. Phanhlakhone Syboonheung The Director

When the dark sky is painted with pink and turns into the golden lights of dawn, locals living in Vientiane begin to make their move. As seen every morning, street vendors push their barrows to the market, setting up their stalls with umbrellas and tables, as smoke from the grill shops spreads all over the city, marking the beginning of the daily activities of the local people, making Vientiane in the morning a charming experience for visitors. This issue of Sabaidee Magazine will give you a glimpse of the golden moments in the morning in Vientiane.

The one place which is, for most tourists, indispensable and a must-see site when they arrive at Oudomxay, is the temple called “Temple of the blessed emerald”. Situated at a site within the Oudomxay’s municipality, it is somewhere you will encounter picturesque sunsets while at the same time being a place where people worship and pay respect. Located at the top of a mountain, you will find a magnificent holy stupa which measures 18 metres in height, built during the reign of King Sayasetthathirat the 1st circa 400 – 500 years ago. This ancient stupa stands atop the mountain proudly radiating its golden gaze. Amidst the same site, there is the colossal statue of a Blessing Buddha, which is the tallest in Lao PDR, standing upright and facing toward the holy stupa as well as toward the Xay municipality, Oudomxay, giving the impression that it’s protecting and blessing those who come to visit. There is also another amazing site which should not be missed, basking in untold natural beauty that simply must be seen. This magnificent spot lies in a

mountainous range of the National Conservation Forest and named “the Mountain of Ghost’s Stone” by the locals, which is about 24km from the provincial municipality. This beautiful forest is rich in biodiversity, waiting for the visitors to discover the delights that lay within. Visitors will find two of the several fantastic waterfalls in the park such as “Tard Nam Gat”, which is 15 – 20 metres in length and 20 – 25 metres in width, and enjoys a continuous flow all year round. Within the vicinity of the falls hangs a 1,500 metre-long makeshift Cradle Bridge stretching from tree to tree which provides visitors a walking platform to get amongst the natural setting around the waterfalls. Another not-to-bemissed natural spectacle is the wonderful “Nam Huay Soum” waterfall, which boasts a dazzling 69 metre drop. Just 30 minutes walking distance from “Tard Nam Gat”, a footpath passes through the heart of a dense forest that makes the surrounding air soothingly cool. Also found nearby are elegant tree houses built especially to cater for visitors wishing to get really close and to experience nature. Currently, there are many interesting activities for visitors to see and enjoy that include a variety of interests such as jungle trailing, elephant riding, cycling, cradlebridge walking, zip lining and mountain hiking to get you to the top of the mountain to view of the city.

Colourful life in the morning at Khoua Din Market

For most locals, life in the morning isn’t complete unless they visit Khoua Din Market. From 3am, the market is dotted with the crowds of both vendors and buyers, where all kinds of grocery products and commodities are sold throughout the area. Feeling hungry while shopping? Try “Khao Jee”, grilled sticky rice skewer dipped with egg or “Khao Piak” rice or noodles in hot soup at 5,000 kip per bowl. This market has lots of parking and pushcart services to transport heavy items to your car.

Dim Sum from dusk till dawn

For Dim Sum lovers, head to Dim Sum That Khao Restaurant in the That Khao area where you will be impressed by high stacks of dumpling bamboo baskets on steamers along with roasted duck, boiled chicken, and red and crispy pork hung as a showcase in front of the restaurant. Even very early in the morning, it’s difficult to find a seat in this restaurant as it’s quite popular among night owls after the bars have closed. There are more than 10 kinds of dumplings such as shrimp, pork ribs, and black pickled eggs. For those with a big appetite there are some main dishes such as red pork rice and duck noodles with reasonable prices ranging from 5,000 – 30,000 kip. Don't forget to try the signature dish - “Banh Guan” or Vietnamese steamed rice skin dumplings topped with deep fried shallots, served with sweet and sour sauce. In operation for over 40 years, That Khao Dim Sum Restaurant is still at the top of the list for favourable eating places for local people, even until today after so many years. 19

Daily news consumption is brain-food in the capital

Whatever the locals eat or how they work-out, many of them never miss the daily news and keep updated on movements in society, economy, and everything else through the local newspapers. Once stepping inside the ‘Coffeeshop’, they will look around to find the publication rack and grab their favourite newspaper, available both in Lao and English. Coffeeshop is also a place to learn local gossip by word of mouth, while taking in a spot of people-watching. 23

Morning warm-up with Koung's Lao coffee

Hidden in the small alley opposite the Ministry of Public Health, you will find a lovely place to sip a cup of coffee that seems like you are in your back-garden at home. Open from 7am till 4pm, Koung's Lao Coffee is a popular place for many people who want to escape from the hustle of the town. The signature dish on the menu which must be tried includes pâté bread stuffed with mashed pig liver mixed with various ingredients and fresh vegetables. Sample a cup of original aromatic Lao coffee before starting your working day.

Crossing the river Nam Kham at dawn on the rickety bamboo bridge behind a group of young monks, I head to the artisan village, they to the temple. You can almost imagine what it was like hundreds of years ago. Buddhist monks recording their faith writing prayers by candle light on handmade Saa paper.

The bark of young mulberry trees, ton saa, which grows over Northern Laos and Thailand makes an amazing quality of paper unrivaled by modern mass production. The enriched fibrous surface gives individual character to each piece of hand crafted paper. You can literally feel the energy that has been invested into every single sheet. I learnt with Nalongkone in Ban Xieng Lek who has a wealth of experience. The ribbons of mulberry bark are first soaked and then boiled in water. After some hours the fibres are made into a pulp, by hand or machine. The pulp is poured into a large bath and the frame is submerged into the fibrous solution. There is something immensely satistfying about lifting the dripping frame out and watching the fibres settle as the water drains away. The frame is dried in the sun then comes the pure bliss of peeling off a fresh sheet of Saa paper. The edges stay frayed which adds a distinctive quality to the paper. I also made paper with banana tree trunk and elephant dung. The former produces a fascinating hairy mat, the latter a beautiful grainy textured sheet. The vigourous boiling kills off bacteria and it is a great way to recycle. Its easy to take for granted something that is so commonplace but the origins of paper have a rich and colourful story to tell. The handmade paper from Luang Prabang serves to remind of a bygone age when life was truly made by hand.

The island of Penang has long been a popular travel destination, but on July 7th, 2008, the sleepy city of George Town was formally deemed to be a UNESCO World Heritage Site, and the pace of tourism development went into overdrive. This historic settlement, located about halfway up the eastern side of the island, was officially recognized as having a unique architectural and cultural townscape without parallel anywhere in East and Southeast Asia. There are remnants of the English colonial past, evidence of the sizeable influx of Chinese immigrants, pockets of population that hail from India and the sub-continent, and multiple mosques that bear witness to the island’s overall Malaysian Muslim heritage.

Colonial George Town George Town was named after Britain’s King George III, and with a population of more than 700,000 it is the island’s main metropolitan area. However the town itself was founded by a different Englishman, Captain Francis Light, and his body now rests in the old Protestant cemetery, which is a great starting point for anyone interested in doing a heritage tour tracing the city’s colonial past. From the cemetery, follow the ocean road east towards Fort Cornwallis, and pass by such notable landmarks as St. George’s Church, the Supreme Court Building, the Light Street Convent, the City Hall and the Town Hall, and the Queen Victoria Memorial Clock Tower. However don’t miss a close up inspection of The Mansion, a beautifully restored waterfront mansion – now and upscale restaurant – located across the street from the old Protestant cemetery. From the clock tower roundabout you can easily continue south along Lebuh Pantai and pass by such interesting landmarks – all still in use – as the Whiteaways Arcade, India House, the George Town Dispensary, and the FMSR Building with it’s own grand clock tower. There are several dozen other colonial points of interest within the city proper, as well as highlights such as Suffolk House, which require a short drive outside the city limits, all of which make Penang into a veritable “living museum”.

Chinese Heritage The English were certainly not the only settlers in George Town, as this lively trading port drew an influx of immigrants from all over, however the city’s Chinese heritage – best exemplified by the historic mansions, the ornate clan houses, and the multitude of Chinese-owned shops and restaurants – remains the most pervasive to this day. Exploring the city’s Chinese heritage of is a fascinating and colourful experience, and definite highlights include the Khoo Kongsi Clan House, a spectacularly ornate temple that dates back hundreds of years. Clan houses are buildings in which Chinese families of the same surname gather to worship their ancestors, and although many other clan houses exist in the city, the Khoo Kongsi is by far the most lavish.

Another fascinating clan attraction is the Clan Jetty (also known as the Chew Jetty). This settlement of homes was built over the water on stilts, a clever way for the residents to avoid paying land taxes. Successful businessmen and entrepreneurs also make up a portion of the Chinese heritage here, and visiting such lavishly restored homes as the Cheong Fatt Tze mansion (also known as the Blue Mansion) and the Pinang Peranakan mansion (decidedly green in colour), gives visitors a bit of insight into the lavish lifestyles of these prestigious merchant families.

Little India & Beyond Nestled in the heart of George Town’s old city is the noisy, vibrant and very colourful quadrant known as Little India. It’s a feast for the senses, especially taste, and street stalls offering mouth-watering take-away fare such as samosas, rotis, and colourful sweets, are on hand to tempt hungry travelers. The area is also rich in classic colonial architecture – much of it in a picturesque state of decay – as well as countless restaurants, cafés, hotels, guesthouses and places of worship, including the lovely Kapitan Keling Mosque. Little India, and Penang as a whole, exists as a virtual microcosm of all that Southeast Asia has to offer, and the way in which it all co-exists in perfect harmony could be a lesson to rest of the world. 44

Street Art Over the past few years George Town has become renowned for it’s abundance of street art, including several beautiful wall murals by Lithuanian artist Ernest Zacharevic. In fact some of his works, which usually employ a bit of “optical illusion”, have become so famous that tourist literally line up just to have their photos taken next to them. Another popular street art attraction is the collection of 52 humourous wrought iron wall sculptures, each of which depicts – using cartoon imagery and text – some historic or cultural aspect of the area. There’s even one depicting a young George Town cobbler by the name of Jimmy Choo, who went on to become one of the world’s most successful footwear designers.

GETTING THERE Although the dual carriageway Penang Bridge tollway connects George Town to the mainland of Malaysia, and an inexpensive ferry boat travels to and from Medan in Sumatra (Indonesia), the Penang International Airport is by far the most convenient access point for travelers. Malaysia Airlines offers direct flights from Singapore, as well as convenient connecting flights via the main hub in Kuala Lumpur, with friendly service and reliable flight schedules.

GETTING AROUND Taxis from the airport to George Town or Batu Ferringhi are plentiful, with fixed rates set in advance, but while in George Town it’s often best to hire a colourful trishaw – a bicycle powered rickshaw – for sightseeing around the city. Meanwhile Rapid Penang has excellent low cost, and frequent, bus service operating between George Town and Batu Ferringhi.
