LETTER FROM THE EDITOR...

T

Hi Everyone.

his September we launch the great come back of the Bollywood sweetheart Katrina Kaif. The actress will be working with Saif Ali Khan in a never before seen avatar called ‘Phantom’. The movie is based on the 2008 Mumbai Terror attacks and was inspired by the book ‘Mumbai Avengers’ written by the Hussain Zaidi. In the exclusive interview Katrina tells us about her role in the film as well as clarifying the rumours that were mentioned about her apparently being engaged. The gorgeous talented sensation also gives us an inside scoop on her daily skin routine and how to always keep it radiant and beautiful. The multi-talented hunk Salman Khan won millions of hearts and this time with deep soulful voice. The song ‘Main Hoon Hero Tera’ has garnered more than 5 million views on YouTube alone, making it one of the top trending online vides. The virility o the song is mind-blowing and has not only connected well with the online audience but has been topping all offline charts and making it a true chartbuster.

Radhika Apte, the actress who wowed everyone in the short film ‘Ahalya’ and will soon be starring opposite Kanal Kapoor in the upcoming film ‘Kaun Kitney Paani Main’. The actress claims that working on the film made her realize the water crisis that rural India is facing. It has motivated her to make a difference. Now the hottest section of the magazine that I know all our readers look forward to…Bollywood Gossip. I don’t want to give anything away but I will give you a hint here or there so that you can go to that section and indulge in, what we proudly Indians call “panchat”. Athiya Shetty’s mother gets protective and tells her daughter that she may not be roaming the streets with her friends until the debut of her role in Salman Khan’s latest venture ‘Hero’. Alia Bhatt and Sidharth Malhtra’s secret diner date?

The alleged lovebirds have been awfully secretive about their relationship but claim to be just good friends but whispers around town seem to differ. COVER FEATURE

Katrina Kaif will soon be seen in a never seen before avatar in her upcoming Saif Ali Khan starrer Phantom. The film has been helmed by Kabir Khan and is about the 2008 Mumbai Terror attacks. The film is based on a book by Hussain Zaidi titled Mumbai Avengers and has Saif playing the lead role of an ex-army officer. But even in the promos, much hasn’t been revealed about our Afghan Jalebi aka Kat’s character. She plays the role of Nawaz Mistry. Page 10

www.saindiamagazine.com

Phantom: Afghan Jalebi Let’s start with the question, which everyone is very eager were news about you and Deepika didn’t see eye to eye when you’ll met at a party? to know, are you engaged to Ranbir? I am glad that you asked this question. I am definitely not engaged. I feel really happy to know that you guys want me to get married, but let me tell you’ll there are no such plans right now.

Hey, do Deepika and I look that silly to you guys? Common. We are both matured individuals. I don’t know from where you get all these imaginations. But yes, I will never talk about my personal life with anyone.

Lets talk about Phantom, its going to be a very heavy role?

Phantom has received opposition from the alleged 26/11 mastermind Hafiz Saeed himself in Pakistan, Jamat-ud-Dawah chief Hafiz Saeed has filed a petition in the Lahore High Court seeking a ban on the film’s release in Pakistan, alleging that it contains “filthy propaganda” against his country.

Yes, it is a totally performance oriented, real life story. I have definitely put in a lot of effort and I really hope that the audience likes it.

You are playing a Parsi character in the film, is that true? If you ask me why am I a Parsi in the film, I can’t give you the exact reason like that’s incidental to the story. Beyond that, I play a person who is working with an NGO, which is like Doctors without Borders similar to that, it’s called Medicine sans Frontiers in the film.

Why is the movie being named Phantom? The reason the movie is titled Phantom is because its meant to be like a ghost operation, it’s meant to come and go. Nobody will ever take blame for it but nobody will ever get credit for it either. Nobody will ever be punished and nobody will ever get rewarded for it that is the idea, which obviously may not go exactly to plan.

It is logical that Pakistan will have problems with this film. A person is doing wrong and the country is not doing wrong. One of the villains in the film may be from Pakistan but that doesn’t mean Pakistan is a villainous country,

Do you ever compare Ranbir with other actors? As I have told before, Ranbir is a naturally gifted actor. I do not compare anybody with anybody else. I am nobody to do such comparisons.

You have earlier said that your mom is very special to you? Yes, my mom is an incredibly special woman in my life. She is a lady who has devoted her life to NGO work. She is one selfless angel and it feels very proud to have her as my mother.

You have worked with Saif earlier in Race. Do you find any You are eight sisters and one brother, so is your brother part of your sisters’ group or no? difference in him then and now? I did not interact much with Saif during Race, I don’t know why but I would sit in one corner and play chess with Akshay Khanna. That time he came across as a very well-mannered and intelligent person. That remains the same with Saif now also. But this time we got a chance to interact more and also hangout more with each other.

My brother is a thorough gentleman and of course having eight sisters and taking care of them emotionally, he will be the best partner to his future wife.

There is a lot of action in the story; did you love doing action this time too?

I can look forward to him when I quarrel with anyone. Hope that answers the question as well.

The action in this film is very different from my earlier film Ek Tha Tiger. This action is very real that is very close to reality. It is part of the story, which moves on with the story.

You have grown up in 13 different countries and different cultures. Has that changed you as a person?

Is it “very hard” for an actor to survive in the industry?

The culture of any country does not change you as a person, but yes now you can put me anywhere and I will adapt to anything and any place very easily.

Well, I really don’t think it’s “very hard” to stay in the industry till the time you are focused and passionate about your work.

One quality everyone must have in a relationship?

But you had a bad phase when we didn’t see you much? It was not because of the industry. It was my personal issues that made me go off track. So when you are not focused on work, obviously the industry can’t do much.

So can you look forward to him when you quarrel with Ranbir?

Besides being trustworthy, which is important. I don’t know if it’s a quality, but I think that every guy AND a girl in a relationship should make it a point that they try and make everyday with that person, special. I think everyone has gotten too used to the fact that you know, you’re supposed to take each other for granted. And because we’re supposed to take each other for granted it means that you know this is just life going on and you know next year will be special, next month will be special. Every minute with the one you “supposedly” love, should be special. The attempt should be that.

Unlike you, Deepika and Kangana have always been appreciated for their performances and you have been majorly in Your secret to such lovely skin… news for your relationships? Yes, that’s not a puzzle for me. I am very much aware of this. In the last two years I have been in a very bad phase and at the same time, Deepika and Kangana and Vidya have been doing really performance-oriented films for which they have been well appreciated. Not all but there was a few films that were offered to me, and I rejected them because I was not in a proper frame of mind. And believe me, these phases do come in life of every actor. Now I am back and I am sure the audience is going to appreciate me as well.

I do things that most girls know about. Something you’ll find in beauty magazines. One thing I do is drink A LOT of water. That is something I am very particular about – that I see a lot of people NOT do! I drink at least 3-4 litres a day. Also, a “sensible” diet. I try to stick to 5-days sensible healthy eating. Then the other days just eat what you want. 2 cheat days.

Have you now become thick skinned to gossip, like there www.saindiamagazine.com

Celebrating the Best of South Cinema

www.saindiamagazine.com

Akkineni Nagarjuna’s “Manam” has topped the Telugu winners list of South Indian International Movie Awards (SIIMA) 2015 with six awards, while “Race Gurram” and “1: Nenokkadine” landed in second and third spots with five and three awards respectively. SIIMA honours the talents from Tamil, Telugu, Kannada and Hindi films and the winners of 2015 were announced at a grand event held at Sheikh Rashid Hall, World Trade Center in Dubai. Akkineni family drama “Manam” was adjudged as the best Telugu movie of the year.

Usha Uthup with Khusboo

Nandamuri Balakrishna walked away with Best Actor for his performance in “Legend”, while Shruti Haasan bagged Best Actress for “Race Gurram”. “Legend” and “Oohalu Gusa Gusalade” won two awards each. “Aagadu”, “Karthikeya”, “Run Raja Run” and “Pilla Nuvuleni Jeevitham” won an award each. The first day of the award function witnessed some high voltage performances from the likes of Usha Uthup, who lit up the event with her powerful singing, and Pooja Hegde, who shook a leg on the stage. Few important awards were given away to Tamil film personalities like music director S Thaman, cinematographer Randy and stunt choreographer Peter Hein. But interestingly enough, these above mentioned technicians have won their respective awards for their contribution to Telugu films like “Race Gurram” and “Aagadu”. Sivaji girl Shriya Saran has won an award for her Telugu flick “Manam”.

Shruti Hassan

SIIMA 2015 has already witnessed a wardrobe malfunction as well. Lakshmi Manchu, who was seen in Mani “Ratnam’s Kadal” suffered a wardrobe malfunction before Taapsee Pannu ran up to her rescue. While the winners in Telugu and Kannada film industries were announced on the first day, victors of Tamil cinema were declared on the second and final day of the award function. Whether it was Mohanlal, who was in his element through the evening or Dhanush, who won not just multiple awards, but also lots of hearts — star power was at an all-time high. Funny man Shiva, who co-hosted the show along with the vivacious Suchitra, added to the charm of the night with his gags, pranks and wisecracks. Taapsee, Shruti Haasan, Nikki Galrani and Rima Kallingal took the entertainment quotient to another level with their energetic jigs. But it was ‘Rockstar’ Devi Sri Prasad who stole the show with a medley of his dhamakedaar numbers. He even got Shriya Saran on stage to shimmy with him on his latest hit track, Charu Sheela from Srimanthudu. Malaika Arora Khan, Sohail Khan, Aditi Rao Hydari and Sonu Sood were the special guests from Bollywood, who came to cheer for their southern counterparts.

While the best actors and directors from Tamil, Telugu, Kannada and Malayalam walked away with top awards, veterans — actress KPAC Lalitha and director P Bharathirajaa — were honoured with Lifetime Achievement Awards. www.saindiamagazine.com

Sarah Jane Dias does a JLo in Zubaan!

Sarah Jane Dias who is all set to essay the role of a bohemian, free spirited singer in Mozez Singh’s Zubaan, enjoyed playing the character that was sketched keeping in mind global popstar Jennifer Lopez. Sources reveal that the coming-of-age musical, starring Masaan sensation Vicky Kaushal, will feature Sarah Jane Dias in a never-seen-before avatar. Adding that her styling and character has been inspired by JLo.

To bag the role, Sarah had a gruelling audition process that included not just enacting a couple of scenes but also singing. Lucky for the ac-

tress, singing has always been a passion and a few minutes into the audition she was already cast in the role.

Adds the source, “While her role in nothing like the pop star’s actual personality, the makers took inspiration from JLo’s various looks from her music video. She plays a bohemian, free spirited singer and since the music in the film is not your typical fare there was a lot of global inspiration “. Sarah says, “I’m a complete JLo fan girl so it was easier for me to relate to what the director (Mozez)had in mind...the songs are bright, vibrant and something that Bollywood has not completely explored...and then he wanted me to mix up the sexiness of JLo with the shiny and effervescent disco feel of Nazia Hassan. It was fun playing a pop singer as it allowed me to have the best of both worlds and explore both my passions - singing and acting.”

1. What is Sarah’s character in the film? What’s her name? Sarah plays Amira in the film. Her character is a sexy soulful singer who is the musical heart and soul of the film. She is the music magnet in Zubaan. 2. Are you a J.Lo fan? Yes I am huge fan of JLo 3. Did you want Sarah to be styled as J.Lo or was it a happy coincidence? For one of the songs, my inspiration was JLo as I wanted a young urban street vibe and then I mixed this up with a Nazia Hasan disco feel so that Amiras character would never be a copy of any one person but a mixture of many female pop stars that I have loved down the ages.

Raveena alleges misbehaviour during Independence Day celebrations in LA Bollywood actress Raveena Tandon has alleged one of the organisers at her Independence Day event here of misbehaving with her after getting on the stage in an inebriated state. Raveena, 40, took to Twitter to share the incident. “In LA after two glorious days, of spending the Independence Day celebrationssadly a bad ending. All was going well. Till a drunk got on stage. “Some chap... started misbehaving, and padding comments, sadly all security was down and couldn’t get to him first,” she tweeted. The “Bombay Velvet” star said the man was reportedly angry that his kids were not allowed to travel with her in her car to the event. “(He) was one of the organisers and was upset that his kids didn’t get to travel in my car with me to the event, which security and protocol didn’t allow. “Started making nasty remarks till I had to yell out to the others to get some other guys up... And that’s when they took him away! But yes I did give him a piece of my mind too. That’s no way to talk to anyone- when I didn’t even know what he was upset about...,” she wrote. “Sadly had met such nice people. But this guy spoilt the whole evening... And the event went off amazing too...”

Katrina Kaif texts Salman Khan The Salman Khan - Kareena Kapoor Khan Blockbuster Bajrangi Bhaijaan is the latest film to join the 300 crore club. The film has taken the nation by storm, including the stars of tinsel town that have taken to social media to wax eloquent about it. The latest star to join this bandwagon is Katrina Kaif, who recently messaged her rumoured ex to tell him that she absolutely loved Bajrangi Bhaijaan. Many wondered whether Katrina had seen the Kabir Khan film, considering she had not only worked with him on Ek Tha Tiger but is also ready for the release of their next, Phantom. It looks like the actress didn’t shy away from giving credit where it’s due with her sweet gesture.

Deepika Padukone is truly flying high. Rumour is that she has doubled her price after a spate of hits. Not just that she has also become choosy about the movies she does. News is that she has refused Vijay Krishna Acharya aka Victor’s film because she didn’t fancy the role much. More power to her. Meanwhile, we hear that Hrithik Roshan has given his nod for the film and the movie will go on the floors in November this year. Hrithik seems to be excited about the project. Why not? Victor’s last film Dhoom 3 created a tsunami at the box-office. News also filters in that director Shankar has approached Deepika to act opposite Southern superstar Rajinikanth in his sequel to Robot.

Priyanka Chopra bullies Prakash Jha

Whatever star kids do have the tendency to make front page headlines. Coffee dates, party hopping, late night movies or maybe just plain walks... nothing goes unnoticed.

Priyanka Chopra has enjoyed herself on the sets of Gangaajal 2. She’s had a great time shooting for the film and especially with director Prakash Jha, who also makes his debut as an actor. Our sources tell us that she wouldn’t leave a single opportunity to bully the debutant. Every time Jha stood in front of her to give his shot, she’d ask him to rehearse and tell him how to give the shot. But when Jha stepped behind the camera, she’d obediently listen to him. When we asked Priyanka about it, she laughed, “Prakash Jha is making his debut as an actor. So, I’m his senior. I love pulling his leg. And I often say in Hindi, ab aaya unth pahaad ke niche.”

We’re soon to witness two more young guns joining the elite star kid’s league - Athiya Shetty and Sooraj Pancholi, who are debuting in Salman Khan’s next production venture, Hero. While the superstar producer is leaving no stones unturned to garner in all the media attention for the right reasons, the parents of the debutants are also being extremely cautious about their kids. From what we hear, Athiya has been given strict instructions by her mother, Mana Shetty, not to be seen in the public with her friends till the movie hits the screens. Given the bizarre rumours that can do rounds prior to the release of any movie, we think it’s a good move by mommy dearest Mana Shetty to make sure that her daughter has an untainted debut.

Abhishek Bachchan’s international project If the word on the vine is to be believed, it looks like Abhishek Bachchan might be doing a film with Bend It Like Beckham director, Gurinder Chaddha. She’s worked with some of the biggest names in Bollywood, right from Anupam Kher to Aishwarya Rai Bachchan and it looks like the handsome Abhishek Bachchan is next in line to work with the female director who is known to bring out the Indian-ness in her films. Add to that, Huma Qureshi has also reportedly given an audition for the film. So if all goes well, we might have an interesting cast on board to look forward to! Let’s wait and watch. www.saindiamagazine.com

Shah Rukh Khan reveals his ‘secret fear’

Deepika says no to YRF film Deepika Padukone is truly flying high. News also filters in that director Shankar has approached Deepika to act opposite Southern superstar Rajinikanth in his sequel to Robot. www.saindiamagazine.com

Sussanne Khan’s mother shares a strong bond with Hrithik Roshan The divorce between Sussanne Khan and Hrithik Roshan had no bearing on the bond that Zarine Khan, mother of the décor expert, shares with the Bollywood actor. She says they are still “mother” and “son” to each other. Hrithik and Sussanne split in 2014 after a 17year relationship, but the “Bang Bang” star still promoted the launch of a book by Zarine, on Twitter last week. He even called her “mom”. Zarine shares the same emotion for Hrithik, who has two sons with Sussanne. “We have been friends since years. He is the father of my grandchildren and we are bonded for life,” the wife of veteran actor Sanjay Khan and also mother of actor-producer Zayed Khan, jewellery designer Farah Khan Ali and entrepreneur Simone Arora.

Akshay Kumar’s son Aarav doesn’t want songs in Bollywood films!

She credits Sussanne for her “graciousness” as a woman for letting the bond continue. “When the divorce went through, she (Sussanne) didn’t make a hue and cry. We are a family and we always have been family and friends together,” added Zarine, who has over four decades of experience in interior designing, and who has now come up with her first book titled “Family Secrets: The Khan Family Cookbook”.

Akshay Kumar’s teenaged son Aarav has a bone to pick with Bollywood. He can’t seem to fathom why Hindi films need songs in the film. The youngster never tires of asking his star dad why characters break into a song at every given opportunity. “Why don’t they instead visit a restaurant to express their joy rather than prance around with umpteen costume changes in different locations?” wonders the lad. Good point kid. Also, it’s a good thing that star kid is taking so much interest in films. Maybe we see him directing a film for papa sometime in future. A film minus the songs of course.

She is the homemaker, entrepreneur, newspaper columnist, star wife and now an author. Twinkle Khanna began with writing a column titled Mrs Funnybones, which has earned a large fan following in a short span of time.

Your first book Mrs. Funnybones is released; do you have anything to say on that? It’s about how a modern woman looks at India and how India looks right back at her. We’re the first Asian country to reach Mars and we’re still looking at the moon for the good health of our husbands. The evening saw riot of laughter? Thanks. It’s so important to make people laugh and to do it sarcastically is a talent. The penchant for anatomical humour, does not really show on your face? People always say that the way I look and the way I speak are at complete odds. I have my admirers everywhere. Like the other day I went to get my ovaries and after she put the probe inside me, the lady leaned over to say, ‘I really like your column’. I said, ‘that’s wonderful, but um, you could you take this out of me and then we could talk? Your column does not spare anyone from a celebrity to a politician; do you ever get scared hitting a pun on these figures? I’ve cared so little about what people think of me, Perhaps the media doesn’t know it, but everyone in the industry does. I’ve always said whatever I’ve wanted to; I didn’t know how to play with my words before, actually. A lot of people found me rude, but now those same people find me funny. If anything, I’ve tempered with time.” Is Akshay your best critique? Our ideologies are very different. The things that we talk about are very differPage 40

ent, but we look up to each other for our different abilities. I do point out things in his films that, as a man, he might not pick up on. But he’s then free to do what he wants with that information. It’s the same the other way around. I’ve been of trouble.

before Aarav comes from school. i give very quality time to Nitara as well, because she is still too small.

So the penis jokes also have his approval?

I wanted to write pretty much since childhood. I used to maintain a file of my really, really bad poems as a little girl and by 16, was several chapters into my first book. “It was called Maya And Magic, about the adventures of a girl who goes to live with her Aga Khani grandmother who is trying to get her married to different suitors.

Penis jokes have his approval, mercifully. “He thought that was funny. He has a great sense of what works, you know. You thoroughly follow the principle of Freedom of Speech? Yes Of course. I believe that freedom of speech has to be absolute. But sadly there is a line to be drawn and that line is defined by, and different for, each individual. That’s what makes the whole thing so hard. You are a very spiritual person and also practice yoga regularly? Yoga has helped calm me because I am a naturally aggressive, hyper person. And now writing, every single day, is having a similar effect. When you’re writing you go away from yourself. You’re dealing with your mind but it’s not really about you, it’s a whole other universe. I feel almost completely at peace, in that hour or two that I spend. Tell us something about your family, how do you’ll spend time with each other looking at yours and Akshay’s busy schedule? Akshay comes home by 6.30 in the evening even though he is shooting. I too see to it that my professional commitments don’t come in the way. I too reach home

When did you ever think about getting in to writing?

Displaying her witty side at the book launch she took a sweet dig at her husband Akshay and close friend Aamir Khan. Talking about Akshay, Twinkle revealed that he cries during movies like Aamir and wears checkered pyjamas every night and that on the very rare occasion when he drinks, he sings Mainu visa dila de Dubai da. The actress didn’t spare her special guest too. Aamir Khan was at the receiving end of her, and Karan Johar’s jokes. The director joked at the start of the event that he feared Aamir would walk out any time given the ‘adult’ tone of the conversation between him and Twinkle. The former actress revealed how Aamir secretly cried on the sets of their film Mela (no, not because the film was a disaster), but because the director refused to listen to his point of view. She also spoke very frankly about herself and said, “My hubby (husband) does comedy and he gets paid in millions. With my comedy, I can’t even buy chocolates. If I need money I will anchor an award show,”

How to Choose a Family Mediator

Adv. Veerash Srikison

A

mediator is someone who is neutral, unbiased and non judgmental to your problems when they sit in to help you and your family or just you and your spouse resolve your issues.

This third person should be able to communicate without forcing their own opinions and solutions to your problems nor should they ask you to accept what the other person is saying. They should not use bullying tactics or religious beliefs to intimidate you into accepting your situation as a fault of your own. A mediator can come from any professional background but must be suitably qualified to be effective.

ever ask open-ended questions to ascertain more information so that the people in the mediation can understand the underlying issues affecting the dispute. •

You should choose a mediator that is confident, competent, and one that has years of experience and expertise. So how should a mediator behave and how do you know you have found the ideal person for your disputes? The following guidelines should assist you in finding a mediator that works for the benefit of everyone involved: •

Neutrality: The mediator must communicate from a neutral point and not be seen as getting involved in making decisions for the people involved or giving his/her own point of view on how he/she would have handled the dispute. The mediator must also not bring their own personal experiences on similar issues to the mediation. The mediator must maintain fairness by allowing all persons in the mediation an opportunity to speak and to be heard with respect. If you choose an attorney to be a mediator, you must ensure that they are behaving for the benefit of both parties and not be representing one of the parties while taking on the role of a mediator. Communication: The mediator must not be aggressive or abrasive when communicating with their clients in mediation. The mediator must how-

Qualifications: The mediator must be trained in the specific skills of a mediator and must be able to confirm these training qualifications to their clients. Clients must do a background check and look for continued training and years of experience. Look for websites that show the credentials of that mediator and it will give potential clients helpful information on the mediators’ expertise. Beware of attorneys who call themselves mediators but have received minimal training or no training. Divorce mediation for example requires extensive training because of the sensitivity of the issues involved.

Costs: A mediator should be able to provide an idea of how much the process will cost. Ask questions: What is the mediator’s fee structure? Do they accept credit cards? Do they only charge for actual mediation time? Will you be billed for research, review of docu ments, phone calls and copying expense? Do they charge by the hour, pay-as-you-go, or will a deposit be required?

Time: A mediator must aim to resolve issues from the first session by working progressively through the issues at every session. The mediator must try to work from an agenda and allow the clients to be flexible with their appoint-

ments so that they are given time to get more information or understand each other’s point of view. Depending how co-operative the clients are a mediation session should not prolong the dispute and the mediator must work towards acting in the best interests of both client and not cause undue delays. bu Jani Sandeep Khosla presented a unique fashion tableau by opening this season’s BMW India Bridal Fashion Week on Friday, 7th August 2015, at The DLF Emporio Mall, New Delhi.

The show and collection paid homage to Varanasi, one of the oldest inhabited cities in the world. Also known as Banaras or Kashi, this is a city steeped in legend, mythology, culture and history. Yesterday, Today and Tomorrow reside in perfect harmony in this hallowed place built on the banks of The Ganga. Varanasi is where The Ancient meets the Historical and the Contemporary in this living, breathing city. It’s Timelessness a mirror of the Human Soul. Varanasi is that which never dies. Varanasi also symbolises an Artist’s journey. A continuum of Creativity. Regeneration, Revival, Reinvention, Rebirth! An endless river, a constant flow. No wonder that it is the birthplace of a rich and enduring arts and crafts legacy. Enigmatic Fashionista Sonam Kapoor opened the show wearing a black multi paneled net flared gown detailed in gold and mirror 3 dimensional Lotuses embellished with Swarovski crystals, metallic gold sequins and beads. She took the ramp by storm by ending the show in ruby red 10 kali net ghagraembroidered with gold metallic beads and Swarovski crystals, teamed with a blouse to Page 48

Shares Sonam Kapoor, «I have grown up wearing Abu Jani Sandeep Khosla, right from my first public appearance for my movie Saavariya to my recent one at Cannes 2015. Be it the anarkali or dhoti pants, they have created them all, way ahead of their time, making them a trend that they are today! I am delighted to have presented 2 gorgeous looks from their collection Varanasi (a place close to my heart since I have shot there). I had a great time today on the ramp flaunting their exciting creations.» Say Abu Jani and Sandeep Khosla, «The New Age Bride is Old School. Our evolution always lies in a return to the Self. To our primal Divinity. To our true and indestructible nature. As C.S. Lewis said ‹We shall not cease from exploration. And the end of all our exploring will be to arrive where we started and know the place for the first time. Becoming is simply Being. Being at one with her own Divinity. This is our new age bride. A woman fully realised.» The duo hosted a pre-show cocktail for their friends and clients at the DLF Emporio. Present were Jaya Bachchan, Shweta Bachchan Nanda, Navya Nanda, Dimple Kapadia, Rinke Khanna Saran with her husband Sameer, Pinky Reddy, Harsha and Mehernosh Heeramaneck, Malavika Sangghvi,

Varanasi is also inextricably linked with bridal fashion with the banarasi sari being integral to bridal and trousseau ensembles. The presentation was designed to transport the audience to this magical place. An elaborate theatrical set that recreated the Ghats, helped the audience find themselves on the banks of the Ganges on the night of a full moon. A night that would yield to a magnificent Dawn. Sunrise moved to midday and then towards evening and the famed Diya Aarti. The show was a multi-layered presentation that combined myriad elements, Celebration, Festivity, Music and Silence, Spirituality and Creativity, it was an ode to the coming together of the Mind, Body and Soul. An essential union that resulted in an Artist’s Creative Expression. The collections showcased the rich legacy of silks, brocades, gold and silver thread work, carpet weaving that the city is renowned for. These magnificent traditional fabrics and motifs found new expression through their Couture. The palette too reflected the different moods and unique spirit of the city. TRAVEL

Bali, the famed Island of the Gods, with its varied landscape of hills and mountains, rugged coastlines and sandy beaches, lush rice terraces and barren volcanic hillsides all providing a picturesque backdrop to its colourful, deeply spiritual and unique culture, stakes a serious claim to be paradise on earth. With world-class surfing and diving, a large number of cultural, historical and archaeological attractions, and an enormous range of accommodations, this is one of the world’s most popular island destinations.

Island of the Gods

Lapped the warm waters of the Indian Ocean, Bali is but one of 17,500 islands in the Indonesian archipelago, yet even among its colorful neighbors’ and even after decades of tourism development—it stands alone in its lushness and incomparable beauty. It is part of the Coral Triangle, which has the highest diversity of marine species, making the coral reefs that surround the island a spectacular sight. The rainy season lasts from October till March with monsoon level downpours, probably not the best time for tourism. High season, which is Easter week and Chinese New Year, generally runs higher hotel rates during the beginning of September. The best time to find deals for Bali travel is between September and December, and the best time to visit during the dry season is April to October.

Places to visit in beautiful Bali: Besakih Temple Besakih Temple, also known as the ‘mother temple’ of Bali sits on the slopes of Mount Agung, at a lofty 1,000m. Besakih is the largest of all the Balinese temples. Eighteen separate sanctuaries belonging to different caste groups surround the three main temples dedicated to Shiva, Brahma and Vishnu. Tanah Lot Temple Tanah Lot must be the island’s most iconic temple. This temple is perched on top of a huge rock, and surrounded by the sea with waves constantly crashing on to its base. As among Bali’s most important sea temples, Tanah Lot pays homage to the guardian spirits of the sea. The temple serves as foreground to the most picturesque sunsets. Uluwatu Temple Uluwatu is among the Bali’s most important sea temples, perched on a cliff edge in the southwestern Bukit peninsula. Here you can catch dramatic sunsets such as at Tanah Lot, Uluwatu also features an open amphitheater close by, where sunset kecak fire dances can be enjoyed. A monkey forest also borders the temple grounds. Tegallalang Rice Terraces Ubud is famous for its scenic expanses of rice fields. And the paddies with the best vantage point are just up north from the main Ubud centre, along the road of Tegallalang. Here, roadside stalls and art shops offering items and curios of all kinds line the street, as well as small restaurants offering diners inimitable views. Kintamani and Mount Batur Kintamani, located in the Karangasem Regency, is home to Mount Batur and the Caldera Lake. A favourite stopover on tour itineraries to this region is Penelokan, which aptly means ‘scenic stopover’. The still-active Mount Batur volcano has erupted about 24 times since 1800, each time reshaping the surrounding landscape. Bali Safari and Marine Park Bali Safari & Marine Park is Bali’s largest animal theme park. The park is home to over 60 species, all roaming freely within their enclosures built to closely mimic their natural habitats. Bus safaris take visitors on tours ‘around the world’, and animal talent shows are held

regularly. Aquariums holding exotic fish specimens are nearby.

Activities to do in beautiful Bali: SURFING Bali’s tourism all began with this sport, and it’s an all-time favourite! Bali has a collection of great surf spots, mostly around the southern coasts and the Bukit Peninsula, which has been drawing those in search of sun, sea and long rides through glassy tubes. Reef breaks, lagoons and varying conditions create great waves for both veteran surfers and newbies. WHITE WATER RAFTING Ayung’s west side is amazing, for besides the enjoyment of challenging rapids, the panorama of this beautiful, intact nature area is highlighted by the appearance of wild animals along the rafting route such as big bats, black monkeys, magpies and more. Telaga Waja is a more thrilling ride, which starts at the foothills of the sacred Mount Agung.

WATERBOM BALI You can have more than a splash at Waterbom, Bali’s premier water park. The water park features over 17 exciting rides, slides and water games to suit all ages, spread over 3.8 hectares. The grounds are packed with leisure facilities set around its slides and pools, with lush tropical gardens providing ample shade. DIVING Bali offers thriving and vibrant underwater scenes with some excellent dive sites. The warm waters are abundant with extensive coral reefs and magnificent marine life with sharks, turtles and manta rays. Spectacular dives include drop off walls, wreck diving and drift diving. Dive centres operate from all the main resort areas offering both daytrips and PADI certificate courses. ATV RIDES What could be more exhilarating than to take on the jungle tracks of Bali’s unspoiled parts on compact buggies and ATVs? Bali Quad Discovery Tours offer quad bike and buggy tours that enable you to discover Bali’s heartland and rural villages on off-road four-wheelers that whiz through all kinds of terrain with ease. PARASAILING

Water slide

If you’ve enjoyed a lot of Bali’s coastal scenes, then perhaps you would like to take another step to get a birds’ eye view. Get up in the air with one of the most favourite marine recreational activities in Tanjung Benoa. Parasailing takes you up to 100 metres above the waves. You can also request for an instructor to guide and accompany you in a tandem ride if you don’t want to handle the reigns on your own. CANYON TUBING Waterslide-like thrills, but out in real nature? This is made possible along a river named Siap, up in Payangan, north of Ubud. These tours take you to the hidden canyons of the Kerta village where you can enjoy the beautiful scenery while drifting forty kilometres downstream in a single inflatable tube. Well-trained guides accompany you on the ride.

MUSIC INTERVIEW

Baby Doll Kanika Kapoor heard in ‘Chittiyan Kalaiyan’ in Roy, as a playback singer for Jacqueline Fernandez. Her new song ‘Desi Look’, once again for Sunny Leone in her upcoming flick Ek Paheli: Leela, was recently launched too.

I started in London. I started working with Dr Zeus; we met and decided we wanted to work together. We started working on songs together and the first was ‘Jugni Ji’. We launched that and it was such a huge, huge sensation. Because of that I got a lot of more work. Then ‘Baby Doll’ happened. And here we are now and I am never looking back now hopefully.

Apart from Meet Bros. Anjjan, Dr. Zeus, Vishal-Shekhar, Sanjeev and Darshan Rathod, Raghav Sachar, Jitendra Shah and Amit Trivedi, who else are you singing for?

By July, Raj and I had separated and Was singing something you always in October, I won the best British Asian wanted to do? award. I have known Manmeet (who is like my rakhi brother) from Meet BrothYes, I have been singing since I was ers from when I was a child in Lucknow, six years old. I did my masters in Music as he was with my older brother in Scinfrom the Benaras Gharana because I dia boarding school. We have jammed grew up in Lucknow. I did classical sing- together as kids. Early 2013, I got a call ing for almost twelve years. from him saying that Ekta Kapoor had heard my voice in ‘Jugni’ and liked it and How did you get into the Bollywood I had been called for a trial for ‘Baby music industry? How did Baby Doll happen?

K

anika Kapoor hails from Lucknow, where she did her Visharad and then Masters in music from Bhatkande University. An early and (now) broken marriage took her to London, opening up a whole new world of music. She now wants to be a musician and performer, not just a film playback singer. The singer shot to fame by singing ‘Baby Doll’ for Sunny Leone in Ragini MMS 2, last year. The number, composed by Meet Brothers Anjjan, took the charts by storm. This was followed by Lovely, another chartbuster that Kanika recorded for Deepika Padukone in Happy New Year. Earlier this year, Kanika’s voice was Page 64

On my tenth wedding anniversary, I asked my ex-husband for a present. We were sort of going through this turmoil in our relationship, as he was cheating on me. I was very upset, he said sorry and admitted to it being a mistake. We decided to renew our vows. I told him, I don’t want any diamonds or any other present. I just want to record my own album. That had been a dream for me. He agreed. We looked for a producer and found Dr Zeus (real name Baljit Singh Padam from Birmingham). He said he would charge us 5,000 pounds per song and would make me an album of eight songs. He is basically someone who is an arranger, who only knows how to put a beat. Raj paid him the money and I started going to his studio once a week in Birmingham to record. One year passed and he could not make a new song for me. A year later, I was really depressed and started going through a bad period. Eventually, a friend of mine introduced me to a song, ‘Jugni’, originally sung by Arif Lohar of Pakistan, and I got Dr Zeus to remix the song against my vocals. We made a cheap green video with me, Dr Zeus

I would not like to reveal these things. And playback is just a part of my career. I am doing a lot of singles now, including with international artists like British producer Naughty Boy, who has just won a Grammy. I am also doing Sufi music, which has such meaningful lyrics and great melody. I love any music that touches me. And Dr. Zeus is not a composer, but only a producer. His songs are all my compositions, like ‘Desi Look’. How have you and your life changed now? From a simple middle class girl in Lucknow, I became a part of Londona s high society, where all I did was bitch over Nobu lunches and lived at the plush apartment in Central London at Mayfair. Marriage exposed me to a fancy life of another level and that kind of took over me. I was materialistic, egoistic, vain and was full of myself, to the extent of being borderline arrogant. The money, the kids, the lifestyle all made me stay with my husband for a long time, till it became too much to go through personally. I am actually a normal simplehearted small town girl, who has been exposed to a lot and has been through a lot very early in life. I am extremely hard-working and extremely passionate. I now live with my three kids (one son who is 11, and two daughters who are 10 and 7 years old) at a small apartment in Knightsbridge. My mother has moved

to London and the both of us look after ness. Today, I am not into Chanel bags, my kids but I am happy. My kids today are so proud of me. with three children, I could have ever become a pop star. I feel that the song was made to change my life. I knew no one in Mumbai, had no PR, but I felt like there was someone looking after me. I don’t know how things are happening to me. But I do know that I am a sincere and hard-working person. What will we hear from you next? I have a couple of huge collaborations; a couple of very special collaborations, which I will be announcing very soon. Indian and outside of India, mainstream as well. I also am planning some singles. I have a lot of Bollywood movies that are coming up with my songs. I think I have sung for almost all of the actresses now. From now until next year I have a lot of songs coming out. I would like to insist and say that I don’t want to be typecast as an item girl singer. I am doing a lot of very soulful music as well.
