Scripps was a major supporter of Indian dance and, in 1991, established the Balasaraswati/Joy Ann Dewey Beinecke award, given annually at ADF to a dance educator.
Story and photos by Dilip Barman The 81st annual American Dance Festival (ADF), the oldest and largest festival dedicated to modern dance in the country, runs June 12-July 26, 2014 in Durham, NC. There will be 50 performances by 24 companies from around the world. This is even more than in 2013 (47 performances by 25 companies) or 2012 (46 performances by 18 companies). Pilobolus (with two commissioned world premieres) and Paul Taylor Dance are regulars, and indeed will be included this season. Pilobolus uses humor and seemingly impossible contortions to create delightful shows. Paul Taylor Dance has been together since 1954 and has performed their majestic dances in over 60 countries. Other troupes that will probably be familiar to those who enjoy modern dance include John Jasperse Company and Cedar Lake Contemporary Ballet. Shen Wei Dance Arts, another favorite, is not on this year’s schedule. Many companies that are likely to Pilobolus, ‘Licks’. be less familiar to audiences are slated to perform, including South Africa’s Gregory Maqoma/Vuyani Dance Theatre and Israel’s Niv Sheinfeld & Oren Laor. A favorite of mine, Gaspard Louis, is included this year. A former Pilobolus dancer, he has his own troupe, Gaspard & Dancers, with strong, evocative dance.

As I described in past ADF reviews, “if you think that you might see ballet, well, you might. If you think that you might see something much more modern and theatrical, you will. If you think that you might see amazingly strong athletic performances conveyed apparently effortlessly, with grace and beauty, that you definitely will see.” There are international and internationally acclaimed dance troupes, discussions with artists, matinees especially for children, film, and more. American Dance Festival is an annual treat for the eyes, mind, and soul. For more details visit www.americandancefestival.org. Sample video clips, ticketing information, schedule (including select performances that include a post-performance discussion with the dancers – highly recommended!), and more are readily available in an easily navigable website.

There is at least one ADF show on every day except for nine from June 12-July 26. Roughly half of the performances take place at Duke University and roughly half at the Durham Performing Arts Center, with a few other venues included, as well. Most of the shows are at 8pm, and there are three Saturday matinees particularly suited for children. There is dance school, discussions with artists, film, and much more, including free non-ticketed events. In past years, a number of South Asian troupes have been part of ADF, such as Ragamala Dance that I wrote about in the July 2012 Saathee. Though there are no South Asian groups at the Festival this year, ADF has a strong connection to the subcontinent. A “mini-ADF” was held in India in 1990. Luise Saathee.com
