nevermore Film Festival - Feb 24-26 (Durham) Created in 1999, The Nevermore Film Festival is a juried competition festival which programs brand-new genre feature and short films from around the world. The festival seeks submissions for narrative feature and shorts with in emphasis on horror, science fiction, dark fantasy, animation, mystery/suspense, and action-thrillers. in collaboration with the Smithsonian’s Asian Pacific American Center with the goal of going beyond the stereotypes of Southeast Asian Indians by exploring their daily lives, to struggles in a new country and contributions to food, culture, and politics. “We were excited to open this exhibit in Raleigh” said Ernest Dollar, Director of the COR Museum, “It is a great opportunity to tell the story our rapidly growing Indian community through exploring Indian American’s impact on American history.” In addition, the museum is partnering with local groups to present a series of public programs and events to highlight Wake County’s connection to the exhibit. “Beyond Bollywood: Indian Americans Shape the Nation” is a creation of the Smithsonian Asian Pacific American Center and the Smithsonian Institution Traveling Exhibition Service. The exhibit will have an extended stay at the museum through April 9, 2017. The museum hours are Tuesdays through Saturdays 9 a.m.-4 p.m./Sundays 1-4 p.m. Admission is free; donations accepted. CMS Student Gives Speech at annual State of Schools Ceremony Sanskriti Deva Kulshreshtha won Charlotte Mecklenburg Schools - CMS State student award last fall and was invited to give a speech during State of schools ceremony and yearend wrapup on December 7, 2016 by CMS Superintendent Ann Clark. Sanskriti is the first Indian-American selected to address CMS state of schools in Charlotte. She is a ninth grader at Philip O Berry Academy.

the Charlotte City Council appointed Dimple ajmera to the District 5 Seat The Charlotte City Council last month voted unanimously to appoint Dimple Ajmera to represent District 5 in east Charlotte. Ajmera will replace Councilman John Autry, who was elected to the NC state House of Representatives in November. She is a member of the Charlotte Housing Authority Board. She is employed as a project manager at TIAA Inc. Ajmera is a Democrat. By state law, appointees to council vacancies must be from the same party as the person they’re replacing. She was chosen from among six candidates and sworn in on January 23. She is the first Asian-American appointed as Charlotte City Council member. She immigrated to the US from India with her family when she was 16. Ajmera’s term ends in December. “I told them I will fill the term for 11 months,” Ajmera told the Charlotte Observer. “I’ll support whoever decides to run for the district.”
