Emerging Economy: India

Washington: India has told the International Monetary Fund that the next managing director of the top global financial body should be from an emerging economy and not from Europe, which traditionally has been the case. Last month, the IMF confirmed Christine Lagarde of France for her second five-year term beginning July 5. There was no other candidate in the race and

No Climate Of Intolerance In India: Arun Jaitley Washington: There could be "stray" incidents of people on either side of the political spectrum making irresponsible statements but this could not be generalised as prevalence of a climate of intolerance in the country, Union Minister Arun Jaitley has said. Dubbing such incidents as "terrible", the senior BJP leader, however, said that they are "rare" in a large country like India. "There could be stray incidents of irresponsible statements by indi-

viduals on either side of the political spectrum, that does not mean that zamin per koi iss tarah ki activity hai (does not mean that intolerance exists)," Mr Jaitley said during a media round-

table with Indian reporters in Washington. "These are bad incidents. These are terrible incidents, but these are extremely rare in a large CONTD. ON PAGE 5

Bound By Legislation On Visa Fee Hike: US Tells India Washington: The US has told India it is bound by legislation on the recent visa fee hike which has badly hit Indian IT companies, an issue that was strongly raised by Finance Minister Arun Jaitley in his bilateral meeting. "There are always two issues, one of course is the recent one, visa fee hike and the other is the old issue of totalisation charges for the IT professionals. The US response really is that we have a legislation which so states it,"

Jaitley told Indian reporters during a media roundtable. "So unless that legislation is changed (it is likely to remain)," he said. Mr Jaitley was responding to a question on the kind of response he received from the US Trade Representative, Mike Froman, when he strongly raised the issue during a meeting early this week. Noting that such a visa fee is impacting only Indian companies, Mr CONTD. ON PAGE 5

Antimicrobial Resistance Pope Brings 12 Syrian Refugees Indian Economy Like 'One-Eyed' King In Poses Serious Consequences: To Italy In Lesson For Europe Land Of Blind: RBI Governor Raghuram Rajan Health Minister JP Nadda HIGHLIGHTS India can achieve its medium-run growth potential, said Rajan RBI governor stressed that India shouldn't follow China, make own path India should capitalise on its own strengths: Rajan

Washington: With India being often described as 'the bright spot in the global economy', Reserve Bank Governor Raghuram Rajan sees this as a case of "the one-eyed man" being king in the land of the blind. Amid gloomy global economic conditions,

Indian economy has been described by many as one of the few bright spots, including by IMF, while RBI under Mr Rajan has also been credited with necessary steps to minimise the impact of external shocks on the country's

financial system. "I think we have still to get to a place where we feel satisfied. We have this saying -- 'In the land of the blind, the oneeyed man is king'. We are a little bit that way," Mr Rajan said when CONTD. ON PAGE 5

Tokyo: Antimicrobial resistance is not only a health issue but a challenge which also has "serious" economic consequences, Health Minister JP Nadda today said as he underlined the need to regulate the availability of drugs to tackle it. Antibiotics resistance and failure to tackle infections "undermine" advancements that have been made in surgery and medicine, said Mr Nadda, while delivering the ministerial address at the Asian Health Ministers' meeting on Antimicrobial resistance (AMR) in Tokyo. AMR is resistance of a

microbe to an antimicrobial medication that used to be effective in treating or preventing an infection caused by it. "Tackling AMR requires rational use of drugs, regulating their availability and sale. AMR is not just a health issue; it is a development challenge and has serious economic consequences. "Antibiotics resistance and failure to tackle infections undermine advancements in surgery and medicine," Mr Nadda said in a series of tweets. Diarrhoeal illness in four developing nations, CONTD. Moria: Pope Francis gave Europe a concrete lesson on Saturday in how to treat refugees by bringing 12 Syrian Muslims to Italy aboard his charter plane after an emotional visit to the hard-hit Greek island of Lesbos. The Vatican said the three families, including six children, would be supported by the Holy See and cared for by Italy's Catholic Sant'Egidio Community. Sant'Egidio has worked out a program with the Italian government to grant deserving refugees humanitarian visas to live in Italy while their asylum applications are being processed.

The Vatican said Francis wanted to make a "gesture of welcome" at the end of his fivehour visit to Lesbos, where he implored Europe to respond to the migrant crisis on its shores "in a way that is worthy of our common humanity." The Greek island just a few miles

from the Turkish coast has seen hundreds of thousands of desperate people land on its shores in the last year, fleeing war and poverty at home. Francis visited Lesbos alongside the spiritual leader of the world's Orthodox Christians CONTD. ON PAGE 5
