The disappeared valley| Reconciliation with the landscape diploma 2018 with Prof. August Sarnitz und Prof. Kathrin Aste
At the beginning of the last century, the Cadore in the Province of Belluno was planned to become a central alpine location. In order to create a future perspective for the area’s development, large infrastructural projects have been initiated to overcome the topographical circumstances. Yet, in 1963 through a huge mountain slide the euphoria came to an abrupt end. Caused by the construction of the Vajont reservoir, the mountain slide buried most of the canyon and thousands of lives. The remaining of the canyon was sealed off and the initial investments terminated. Subsequently, many buildings and projects fell, together with their visions, into oblivion, and Cadore’s development took a different turn.
The thesis project approaches this area, taking into account the present situation: destroyed, unfinished or deteriorated, it is what there is. Fragments of infrastructure isolated in the landscape. Exactly this imperfection of the “as found” creates interest and fascination for the thesis to evolve. After a wider view on the whole area and its building history, the focus zooms in to the Vajont Valley. As a historic key position, the site requires new accessibility, from a metaphorical as well as physical perspective. Carefully placed interventions aim to reconcile the area with its upsetting past and adopt the remaining pieces to create inspiration for new developments on the site where the interaction with the landscape placed a hold on once future visions.
„The proposed staging helps us to understand the past dreams and to glance a questioning look at shaping a possible future.“

Winer Linien | Big Opening Rolltreppe Schottentor creating facts | urban intervention 1. December 2015 with Dennis Kekic & D 7/15
What role do advertising campaigns and press reports play in today‘s urban development? Do they show existing arrears and failings of the city, or are they much more likely to stage and promote projects by creating needs and problems? On the basis of an experiment, we followed these questions. We played with media and press reports and involved people behind us who actually had nothing to do with the matter. We claimed the re-commissioning of an escalator and made it a media figure. At the end, we opened together with 1500 people and 30.000 internet follower, the escaletor and blocked the Vienna Metro for hours. But, our real intention, remained unknown behind the staging.

phase 1 Motivated from the fact, that a international investor wants to build a shopping mall in the city center, for which the main bus station as well as the adjacent park will be destroyed, jung_in_bozen has formed. A group of young people from 16-25 years started to inform the population about the shopping mall facts but also about the urban-social situation in bozen. Apart from the daily statement or critical snapshot on social network, there also smaller and bigger happenings to get attention and involve people.

Starting from an intensive subjective analysis from sketches and models of an upcoming area in Vienna, I choose a site, which is, because of the train divided into many small pieces. This site will connect the old and the newly developed area as well as both sides of the train area. The building will sit like a bird on top of different infrastructures. Just some small legs will touch the ground, where between the existing bridges and walls, like in a bird nest, public places, parks and open facilities are placed. The area shows a high degree of diversity, which will be continued also in the building. Where they are not just next to each other, they mingle up to a public path network through the building.

the structure
winter term 2014|15 Studio ESC Hannes Stiefel | ]a[
The growing of the city creates at their boarder a wildlife of buildings. It looks like there are no rules or strategies for the future. You see a great field where the city seems to run out and create an area between city and landscape. As new urban experiment, we take this border, this between. The pressure which goes normally out of town, we turn around. To push pressure forwards the city. Like the old Vienna was designed true the City Wall or the Linienwall, we make a new urban structure around the city to compact the area inside. This new Wall will be a big structure which symbolist the end of the city without cutting the surrounding away.
It will be open; people can pass true without problems; and offers a lot of space and possibilities for the citizens. All new urban development will happen there along the structure, but just at the city side. To create and fill the structure, all -in the wider sense- necessary public facilities will be in the wall. At the end, when the city inside is full she will jump over the wall and grove on. There will be an inner-city stripe (Schweif) where the can break down the structure and use the space like the City Wall (Ring) or they reuse the structure in different ways like the Linienwall (GĂźrtel).

Palazzo Ombla winter term 2013 Studio #6|KTH
The Palazzo Ombla, as a ocean research center, join living, working and public events in one building, like the old Palazzi of Dubrovnik have done. The old walls of the preexisting building create a “natural facade in the unadorned, stony context of Ombla. The holes in the walls and the fully glazed interior create a shadow play over the whole building. And works in this kind with modern approach of the southern architecture, where not the view is the main reason for an opening, but the air-circulation and controlled / filtered sun entrance.

Katarinabergets Theater autumn term 2013 Studio #6|KTH
The basic idea behind the project is to use the old civic shelter below the Medborgarplatsen instead of bulding a new theater on the site. On the south part of the shelter, we take a quarter of the space and cut it up from the rest. Without the floors, the big hall will be the main stage used as black box. The old car entrance from the south, with it`s slope room, will be an experimental stage, where dancers can experiment with this different room feeling. And also the public will have their stage on the loop ramp where the “audience stage should invite everyone, dancers and guests, to use them. On the overground the old massive steel doors will remain and form the new entrance. Only a big glass cube, coming out of the wall, will show to everyone that hear is something new, and open a window to the inside or the next shows.

Within a one week workshop we developed hybrid architectures beyond the vast separation of the modern world. In combining regional cultural practice and renewable energy production with local food supply, students could introduced to this integral design approach, leading to a new set of hybrid architectural typologies. In applying specifi c architectural techniques on mapping these interactions, students learned how to address and integrate many layers of our complex world. EMERGING REALITIES thus attempts to focus on local specifi city, on inventiveness and on a newly defi ned role of systemic thinking to render architecture and landscape as key disciplines to envision this future cultural practice. Architecture and Landscape Architecture students of master or high advanced bachelor level are welcome to join this inquiry for a more inclusive architecture that prepares for complex design challenges to come. The group was probably always an important element in the valley to master the simple, rustic life in the slope. Starting from the life on the farm in the Villas, small farm groups, and onwards with the separate language in the valleys you will find many examples of the communites precence. Until today this has been preserved , so every three years the young men of Val Badia start together on the way over the Forcela de Furcia up to Säben to give thus to their tradition , culture and faith expression . Thus form and extend it the age-old bond between them and their ancestors. The arduous journey shows, probably more than any other action in the valley , the existing cohesion since hundreds of years
A band formed of from new, old , used laces, that will adorn the path at several points at the Forcela de Furia. The laces, the supporting element on the hike, becomes a symbol of the cohesion in the Gadertal-Valley. With this ambiguous element each hiker passing is made aware, both in the figurative sense and effectivly when hiking, of the importance of good support, be made aware , both in the figurative sense as effectively when hiking . Pure Architecture as sacred space The Construction Site published 2018 Salto.bz Arch Blog
“Pure Architecture as sacred space / The Construction Site describes the beauty of buildings during their construction. The absence of scale, clean forms. The water, which seems to be everywhere. The continuous change of state. A place that will exist in the future, but looks like a long abandoned place. The text clames the construction side to be a sacred place. Which will lose all it`s secrets with the ongoing works and seems to die, step by step.

architecture is more may 2012 Banale Digitale Graz
“Architecture is more” is a critical text for the Banale Digitale 2012 form the architecture Studios Tu Graz, which claims that architecture is more than only form and beauty, even if society does not understand this anymore. It’s a way of thinking, a way how people see the world, a reflection of the time and there society. All the CAAD forms are not more than ornaments. And the resume is: Architecture isn’t beautiful or ugly. Architecture can be good or bad. Architecture can be functional or not. And that can seem beautiful or ugly to a person, but this aspect is secondary.
Also gibt man es ihnen.
