Why You Shouldn’t Renovate Your New Home Before You Move In

You’ve bought a new home and have finally got your hands on the keys, and understandably, you’re pretty excited. However, it can be easy to get carried away and start envisaging, or planning, how you’re going to renovate it so that all of the work is done and dusted before you move in for good. While you might think that this is a good idea (and it sounds it, to many) with hindsight, many homeowners find it to have been a mistake. Why? Because you don’t fully understand your new home and how you want it to work for you. In fact, some aspects of your home that you didn’t think you would like before you moved in, might actually become the aspects that you love the most.

Renovating before moving in might work for you, but don’t automatically assume that it’s the smartest things to do. Experts advise that living in your new home for at least 6 months is essential for helping you get the renovation you really want, and to prevent you from wasting money on areas of your home that might actually be just fine the way they are. Here are a few reasons why it pays to wait before renovating your new home:

You can learn how your home functions

Living in your home is the best (if not, only) way to get a full and complete picture of what works, and what doesn’t; what needs to be replaced and what needs to be added, and what can stay right where it is. As you live in your new home, your ideas will evolve and adapt to your experiences, and after a period of a few months, you’ll know exactly where to spend your money, and where not to.

Better assess your needs

As touched upon above, by living in your home for a while before renovating, you can better assess what your needs are, and where your money would best be spent. From extra storage to a second bathroom, nothing can highlight your needs better than your living experience, and a lot can happen in six months; who knows, your needs might change in that period, as might your priorities.

Learn what you love

Some features of your home that may have appeared too quirky, non-functional or downright ugly when you first moved in, might have grown on you as time passed, and other members of your household may even have their own ideas to share with you as to what they love and what they don’t love, about their new home. Ultimately, waiting for a period of at least 6 months to renovate your new home can help you identify renovation hotspots, and figure out where you most need to spend your money, and where it can be saved.
