island of Maratua (shown beside), Derawan Archipelago, Berau Regency, East Kalimantan, Indonesia as part of Architecture Design Department. This is overall, an interesting and challenging project, with difficulty in logistic of building materials, tight budget, various terrains (coral dry rock, sand and coastal), low supply of skilled builder and scarcity of water and electricity. The founder is a native from this island with a dream of

in 2016. The founder wanted a flexible concept, which is possible to change according to the situation, time and budget. Therefore, creating an Architecture Design Department. The experience could be summarized as focused, explorative, intriguing and of course, exciting. I’ve contributed in more than 10 projects and I wanted to

HIGHLIGHTED PROJECTS

Sections of the Master Plan

Ocean Zone. we are planning to built water villas which are located far away from the border between deep water and shallow water, as the team wanted to preserve the flourishing corals which lives in the border. Forest Zone. We are planning on making this into an outbound area, full of forest experience. Imagine waking up to the noise of the bird singing, fresh air and sounds of calm forest.

Service zone. In here we are planning to provide the employees with a little village of their own. We are planning to build a library and a high school for the local people as well, as it is absence for the local community at the moment. Recycle and Environmental Zone. This is the final zone with our dream to develop the resort as a tool to help the environment and the local community. The plan is to build Composing Center, Plastic Workshop and Recycle Center. In addition, we wanted to incorporated a farm to sustain the resort need and a Coral Regrown Center, to help regrown the dead corals of Maratuan Sea.

Development Zone. This zone is open for further discussion and development. 7

top of the corals line, so the new design refuse to follow the same mistake. The new design is pushed back 10 meters behind the corals line, in order to keep the health of the sea corals. The design used 3 different types of woods. The first is Ulin, used as the main structure, as Ulin is strong and resistance to decay caused by the salt water. The second is Marsolo Wood used as the wall, as Marsolo is soft and tactile friendly. The Last type of wood used is Meranti Wood used for the ceiling, as it is cheaper compare to other. This 3 type of woods is the native timber of Borneo.

design focused on the repetition of the singular room, resulting in a flexible dimensions. The brief of our resort is to keep the design flexible and open for future adjustment, due to budgeting and building priority. Cliffside Lodge will be built timber foundation - similar with a stilt house -, combinations of timber ornamentations and Light Steel roof structure accompanied with Zinc Tile. The design uses Zinc Tile because, water travel faster on a Zinc Tile, hence, more rainwater collected at a faster rate. (As we collect rainwater and filter it in tanks to used as water supplies)

the beauty and aesthetic that resort needed. In this renovation concept, the main issue was tight budget, resulting in preserving the main structure of the building. This cramped room house will be turn into an open spacious reception with little bar to create coffee and welcome drink.

Reception

The reception will have a dedicated office spaces and a private owner bedroom. The bedroom is

problems. The previous design of the cottage lacks space efficiency and concept, such as an empty huge bathroom; hence, I introduced a new layout with more efficient use of the space. The toilet is located in the middle of the building, creating a more efficient plumbing. The toilet also works as a privacy barrier for each private verandas and noise barrier between each rooms. The cottage will be built on a stilt construction, using GRC board as the main material for the wall. We used the roof to collect rainwater and store it in tanks under the cottage. Individual rooms will hold 3 tanks with total capacity of 6.5 tons of water as supply.

Precdent Study: Qibla Diagram of Bait Ur Rouf Mosque

A muslim monastery.

Monastery, an architecture designed by rituals and symbolism. This project is located in Newcastle uponTyne, United Kingdom. Muslim monastery is an attempt to discuss the current global crisis of Islamophobia, particurally in the UK. The complex is divided into 3 zones based on human activity, which includes: living, praying and working. The monastery consists of residential, madrasah (school), mosque, gallery, brick factory and ceramic workshop. Brick and ceramic are the main material used and based on a poetic approach. The design focuses on the Qibla direction (a direction muslim need to face when praying, which is facing Ka’abah, Mecca), following a precedent study of Bait Ur Rouf Mosque in Bangladesh by Marina Tabassum.

Qibla disruption

The master plan focuses on the qibla direction, studied from the precedent study of Bait Ur Rouf Mosque. The qibla direction disrupts the continuity of the parallel lines shown by the yellow lines. This direction only applied to the most important parts of the Monastery, which is the mosque and the courtyard. It is a necessity to face the mosque in a qibla direction, however the courtyard aims to reinforced this idea of qibla disruption.

Materiality Metaphor

The materials used in this Muslim Monastery are brick and ceramic, which is symbolize two different sides, Muslim community and local people in the UK.

patterning an abstract image of “Allah”.

The metaphor of these different materials is “even though brick and ceramic are different materials, they come from the same source, clay; the local people and Muslim community are different, nevertheless, they are both human”.

Qibla and some hope.

Muslims need to pray in the direction to Mecca. This direction is called qibla. The Mosque and the central courtyard are aligned to qibla, disrupting the order of the site. The multi entrances to the courtyard are designed to attract the community to walk inside, creating a

An Apprentice Poem

When the world fail me,

I run to the divine,

Asking for direction,

Asking for meanings,

Asking for guidance.

When the world fail them,

They run to me,

Asking for direction,

Asking for meanings,

Asking for guidance.

They might think,

I’m godly, I’m holy, We are similar, We are human,

Trying to grasp,

The world’s absurdity,

Living as an Apprentice.

The residential is three stories high, with a communal area in the ground floor and private units above. The living area is the most private area in the monastery, minimizing ground floor external openings.

Praying as an Apprentice. This is the place for apprentices to learn and pray. The praying zones include: madrasah (school), mosque and a space for Wudhu - a ritual of washing before prayers. The internal of the Wudhu space tower is cladded with ceramic, bouncing colorful light down the space. The tallest tower located in madrasah is the observatory tower, to observe the night sky, as Muslims have different calendar, which revolves around the moon cycles.

Working as an apprentice.

The apprentices need to work to maintain their economy. This monastery has brick and ceramic workshop. The furnace is the second tallest tower, firing brick and ceramic. This activity of working is part of the rituals, of the mundane everyday life.

BERWICK ARCADE. A project based of a game.

This is an arcade located in Berwick-upon-Tweed, United Kingdom. This building is based on a strategy computer game called Endless Legend. This project explores the use of openings and the impact to humans. The concept of the project is “the cave”. This is a place for hobbyist to retreat from their life, to a place for them to enjoy. Entangled stairs and leveled places will give them experience of the games. The large singular south facing openings act as the main source of daylight. This create a possibility to create complete darkness inside, a more complete experience of an Internet café.

LEITH WONDERLAND. Inspired by castle and wonderland.

This residential project is located Leith, United Kingdom. The inspiration was taken from castles and wonderlands. The new residential complex around Leith is designed to be closed and bordered, like a castle - their wonderland whereas the main residential building is designed like a castle wall, excavated based on needs, creating irregular walls. The units explore the use of walls, exchanging it with series of shelves, which acts as storage area. The central courtyard is designed to

A medium of refuge.

Outside doing architecture works, I enjoy art as a whole, including painting, photography, poetry and digital drawing. I found these activities enjoyable and have helped me to keep my creativity intact. This hobby have sharpen my skills in using Photoshop and Illustrator, which beneficial when doing architecture rendering. Painting and drawing allowed me to explore feeling, colours and media experimentation on representing ideas through mix media. I applied this kind of rendering in my final year project, using painting as the main medium of architectural rendering. In addition, it is accompanied by several poems representing the
