Having worked at all scales, I find that the projects and designs I find myself drawn to is the work that speaks at a human scale; a level of design that reacts emphathetically yet at the same time pushes the boundaries. This portfolio is a reflection of my design ethos, starting with grand sweeping “gestures of design and ending with interpersonal studies of how space can be redefined.

WERKBUNDSIEDLUNG What | Housing Development for Columbia Heights, D.C. When | Spring 2018 ARCH 2020: Landscape of Human Habitation With | Prof. Maria Gonzalez Aranguren Taking cues from Kazunari Sakamoto’s Werkbundsiedlung for Mßnchen, Columbia Heights housing attempts to better integrate public and private space within a vertical aspect into a cohesive site that not only coexists with the existing fabric of the city, but at the same time seeks to redefine what it means to densify housing within a city such as Washington D.C. As densification moves vertically, so should public spaces. As the housing aggregation moves upwards, new levels of public spaces open up alongside apartment units, providing open circulation among large vertical units.

CHARLOTTESVILLE CONVENTION What | Urban Center for Charlottesville VA When | Fall 2018 ARCH 2010: Introduction to Urban Architecture With | Prof. Alex Wall As a first step into designing large urban spaces, our prompt was to create a new urban center in place of the open lot in downtown Charlottesville. Situated downtown between Water St. and South St., our urban centers were to serve as a catalyst for Charlottesville’s growth, but maintain the successful farmer’s market that occured on Saturdays. What Charlottesville needed was a Convention Center, one that could bring large scale events downtown while providing ample space for the farmers market.

Charlottesville Convention

19

Located in the heart of Charlottesville, Virginia, the downtown mall consists of a collection of small retail and residential spaces. While the outdoors Sprint Pavilion caps the downtown mall, what the downtown mall lacks is an indoor space for large functions The convention center consists of two main constructions. the first is the roof enclosure, consisting of a canopy suspension system. The insides consist of three free-standing units, each a differnt size designed for various functions of varying scale

HANG 6 What | Inhabitable Pod designed for UVA School of Architecture When | Spring 2017 ARCH 1030: Foundation Studio I With | Prof. Erin Root, Olivia Cleary, Sarah Hirschfeld For a first sutdio, we were asked to create an inhabitable structure made out of recycled materials found around the University of Virginia, wtih a heavy emphasis on creating a structure that was effective in molding material to the site we chose. As a joint project with peers Liv Cleary and Sarah Hirschfeld, we decided to create a unit composed of recycled copper hangers sourced from local dry cleaners. With these hangers, we triangulated and molded the hangers together to create a canopy that used the steps in front of the Architecture School.

Hang 6

Situated outside the Campbell Hall East Addition, Hang 6 was put together by hand in roughly 2 weeks, with the wire hangers sourced locally from Brown’s Cleaners and the Cavalier Marching Band’s closet. While not necessarily fulfilling the criteria of protecting from the elements, the wireframe structure offers a comfortable space that puts the site in a new perspective.

JOINTSPACE What | Japanese Joinery When | Fall 2018 ARCH 3070 Design Thinking I With | Prof. John Comazzi, Garrett Vercoe, Eric Duong With the use of modern fabrication methods, our selected studies of Japanese joints needed to be translated from their traditional forms in both geometry and scale of production. These translations allowed us to create abstracted space through a reinterpretation of traditional japanese joinery. By studying the distinct ways that our joints could create implied volumes through their connections, we created a series of objects that can form further connections that lead to higher-level schemes of aggregation. Inspired by the spatial work of El Lissitzky and Sol Lewitt, each object explores a unique configuration of joints upon which observers can project their own functional or symbolic meaning.

CHEF + HOME What | Housing Typology Study When | Spring 2018 ARCH 2020: Landscape of Human Habitation With | Prof. Maria Gonzalez Aranguren As part of our exploration into architecture for habitation, we were given a series of prompts asking us to design a set of homes that fit different criteria, showing the various forms in which housing could come in. One of the first challenges presented to us was to design a single level home catered to a specific individual. One possible typology investigated is a living space centered around food and the livelihood of a chef creates a home where the dining room acts as the focal point of the home, a space to showcase the chef’s work.

Chef & Home

Through shifts in floor heights, a room could be tailored towards certain functions without the necessity for explicit furniture, instead relying on the surfaces created by the variations in floor plates

URBAN FILLER What | Inhabiting Stairs When | Spring 2018 ARCH 2020: Landscape of Human Habitation With | Prof. Maria Gonzalez Aranguren In order to try and create a home that could fill in the empty space left by poorly planned housing developments, or even be the starting point for a new range of hyper-thin housing, Urban Filler is meant to sustainably densify cities that suffer from poor planning. Starting with a large blank canvas of a wall, the staircase winds up the wall creating spaces as it elevates. The spaces created at platforms and landings served as the base for the spaces of inhabitation.
