Raleigh Central Library Fall 2017 | ARC 501 - Comprehensive Design Studio Susan Cannon My design for the roughly 40,000 SF library in the heart of downtown Raleigh takes advantage of a narrow 100’ x 200’ site with a 15’ elevation change. This allows for entrances at multiple floor levels and the 2:1 geometrically defined site was used as a base for generating my main diagonals in plan as well as my 25’ x 25’ structural grid layout. The Southern solar exposure in the interior courtyard necessitated the use of a large shading device while the shifting floor plates provide visual interest as well as shade under the overhangs. Various occupiable outdoor spaces and green roofs aid in connecting the user to the environment on every level. The shift in the floor plates also creates pockets off of the main circulation where one can comfortably read media next to natural light and particiapte in the everlasting transfer of knowledge that libraries encourage.

Textile Arts Museum Spring 20178| ARC 503 - Precast Studio Dana Gulling The task was to design a new Textile Art Museum for the state of North Carolina. The site is located downtown on Jones Street, near the Natural History Museum, the History Museum, and the State Archives. The museum includes a mix of display, public amenities, archive, administration, and service spaces. Textiles tend to be sensitive to humidity, light, and temperature, and require protected storage and work spaces to protect and restore the work. There are some minimal support spaces (e.g. offices, conference room, mechanical, etc.) to help support the building’s functions. The building designs uses both structural precast and architectural precast. This studio was a collaboration with CE students acting as structural consultants throughout the process. The museum must support different users with different circulation paths. This includes the public museumgoers, commercial traffic (cafÊ and museum store), the textile art work, and museum staff.

Affordable Student Housing Fall 2019 | ARC 503 Thomas Barrie This project aims to create a communitycentered place that provides a variety of services and housing types to serve a diverse range of students. The densely-planned site will encourage spontaneous interactions and healthy activities. Numerous sustainable approaches include microunit living options, bike-friendly amenities, on-site water management, solar energy production, and repurposing of existing campus courtyards. The project would serve as an example for revitalizing places and spaces on campus as well as raising the bar for future development at NC State and other universities across the country.

Duke Regional Hoispital Perkins + Will

Summer 2016 - Summer 2020 The design for a new addition to the existing 1970s Duke Regional Hospital exhibits healing at a variety of scales. The main design concept was to split to two major program functions, an emergency department and an outpatient clinic, as pavillions set within the existing pastoral landscape. The precast concrete facade is a simple and modern nod to the existing white precast panels the clad the adjacent behavioral health hospital. The glass entry canopies reach out to welcome and guide patients or visitors into warm, rich and inviting lobbies. The landscape is pulled through the building through the use of 3 large exterior patient courtyards, 2 of which are elevated on the 2nd floor. Design Team: Kenneth Luker (Principal), Scott Hefner (Lead Designer), Juliane Hatfield (Project Architect), Sean Murphy (Project Manager), and myself (Co-Designer)

Pop-up Lab Perkins+Will, RTP Summer 2016 The Imagination Lab at NC State University will serve as a place to inspire, feed the curious, expand and generate knowledge and information open to all disciplines and ideas. With the stated goal of “Winning the Hearts and Minds for Science,” the 1,280 square foot facility is designed to adapt to a wide range of interdisciplinary discovery. The Lab thrusts experimentation out into the heart of NC State University’s campus, both anchoring and activating the university’s main plaza, called the Brickyard. The design’s colliding elliptical form is inspired by the captivating scientific patterns of orbital motion. Design Team: Kenneth Luker (Principal), William Sendor (Lead Designer), and myself (co-designer)

78

Ryan Cooper | 2020 Selected Works

79

Campus Nucleus The Imagination Lab activates the western edge of NC State’s “Brickyard”, an expansive plaza at the core of the College of Sciences and the university at large. In this location, the Lab will serve as a positively charged center of mass about which creativity, experimentation, failure, and discovery continually orbit. The Lab will act as a catalyst for the Sciences as well as a test tube for the universitywide interdisciplinary collaboration.

80

Ryan Cooper | 2020 Selected Works

Conceptual Inspiration: The Brickyard + Orbital Motion Collegiate life at NC State revolves around the brickyard. The resulting gravitational pull of academic and social interaction inspires the Imagination Lab’s formal expression and scientific spirit. The Lab’s colliding elliptical design is derived from captivating scientific patterns of orbital motion, from galaxies to electrons to mathematical representations of Chaos Theory’s punctuated motion.

Citizen Scientists Among NC State’s goals for the Imagination Lab is that science and the interdisciplinary collaboration on campus should be open for the public, in order to “Win the Hearts and Minds for Science.” The adaptable, open design of the Lab fosters this spirit to public involvement and active participation by citizen scientists.
