Das interdisziplinäre Graduiertenkolleg „UnRAVeL – Uncertainty and Randomness in Algorithms, Verification and Logic“ Forschung zur Eisenbahninfrastruktur und dem Eisenbahnbetrieb Many real-world problems contain a degree of uncertainty, be it due to continuous changes, incomplete data sets, or ever-changing or unknown environments. This can have large influences on daily lives as well as hardware and software systems. Capturing and modelling the randomness and uncertainty of processes is a demanding task that requires expert knowledge from practice and science. The DFG-funded Research Training Group UnRAVeL (Uncertainty and Randomness in Algorithms, Verification and Logic) offers a stimulating and diversified environment for 12 doctoral candidates to study the effects of uncertainty and randomness. UnRAVeL
is an interdisciplinary collaboration between researchers from theoretical and applied computer science, mathematics, business administration and economics as well as railway engineering. This unique setup offers the possibility to cover problems in depth and from multiple perspectives. We present two fascinating exemplary collaborative UnRAVeL projects with a focus on railway engineering. The first project incorporates the capabilities of dynamic fault trees to estimate the criticality of infrastructure elements in railway stations. The second project deals with the theoretical complexity and efficient computation of vehicle shunting problems.
