SUPERINTENDENT’S COMMENTS Public Pools

I grew up in a small town with a public outdoor pool. My siblings and I would bike across town for swimming lessons and afternoon open swims. I still remember the coldest days where we were all shivering in the water and the instructors were on the deck in their sweats! Learning to swim as a child makes it easy to enjoy swimming as an adult. I can participate in triathlons, lap swim, jump off a boat or quarry wall and dive into ocean waves without being afraid of drowning. I enjoy hearing stories from long time Rutland families about their memories at the Rotary Pool and White’s Pool. Tom Cohen remembers how the pool brought together the kids from the different neighborhoods. Back then with the neighborhood school divisions kids didn’t cross paths as much as now. It is fun thinking about Tom and his friends as 10 year olds doing flips and dives off the towers! When Tom was 10 and White’s was being built, I wonder if his parents told him he would be talking about replacing that pool when he was in his 50’s? The city has had a public pool since 1929. The first pool lasted 43 years from 1929-1972. White’s Pool lasted 44 years from 1970 - 2014. Rotary Pool leaked like a sieve at the end similar to White’s Pool. Tom remembered getting a “pre-shower” as Rotary pool was up above the locker rooms and always leaked. Will residents continue to support a public pool? That is the question before Rutland City dwellers when they vote on the outdoor pool referendum March 1st. I believe an outdoor pool is part of the fabric of a community. Thousands of children have learned to swim over the 86 years that Rutland has had a public outdoor pool. Our swim team has won countless league, district and state meets. Our campers have enjoyed the afternoon week day swims. Families come together and swim after work or on the weekends. Our adults have had the opportunity to stay fit through lap swimming. Grandparents watching grandchildren find the pool a great outlet to burn off excess energy. We have employed our teens and young adults through lifeguards, swim instructors and admission staff. Our community has come together over the decades at the pool. It is my hope that we will continue to build memories with a new community pool. Yours in community,

Cindi Wight Superintendent
