In a relaxed setting, students are encouraged to draw on workplace experience and common sense to improve their basic math skills and to learn to solve math-related problems that occur daily in the workplace. Topics will include: addition and subtraction, percentages/graphs, multiplication and division, weigh volume relations, area/volume calculations, metric conversions, velocity and flow rate conversions. This is especially so in times of emergencies, such as power outages, floods, hurricanes or other natural disasters. Participants will be introduced to the physiology, characteristics, nomenclature and taxonomy of various types of microorganisms. Topics will include: bacteria/viruses/fungi/algae/protozoa indicator organisms/antibiotic resistance/testing methods/the microbiology of water and wastewater systems/mitigation options.

The class will include an interactive session during which participants will use microscopes to identify various microorganisms in environmental samples, as well as several hands-on equipment demonstrations.

This course will address the basic chemistry and treatment methodologies used in drinking water and wastewater operations. Even if you aren’t taking a licensing exam in the near future, let this class help you to review and reinforce the basics. Topics will include: • Balancing equations, chemical symbols, scientific notation • Chemical contaminants of drinking water detection and limits, NJDEP/USEPA MCLs and wastewater discharge limits • Wastewater treatment chemistry and secondary “nuisance” chemicals • Chemical disinfection - including alternative disinfectants • The chemistry of corrosion control, coagulation, flocculation and filtration • Basic chemical dosage calculations and problem solving

This two-day program focuses on the proper operation and maintenance procedures for wastewater collection systems and their component parts. The agenda has been designed to stress proactive methods that will minimize or eliminate the need for reactive or emergency responses. Real-world case studies and examples will be used to reinforce the information presented. The handouts and materials provided will serve as both a great reference in the workplace and as a tool for preparation of collection system licensing exams. Specific topics will include: components of a collection system, troubleshooting, investigation and maintenance, administrative, managerial and regulatory activities, new construction/facility start-up, pipeline and manhole rehabilitation and repair, pumping facilities, proper operating procedures and safety.

The course will discuss meeting expectations, setting targets and standards, listening techniques, techniques for handling people (including the difficult ones!) and steps to problem-solving/resolving conflicts.
