What is your area of specialty? I am a university administrator and also Professor of Civil Engineering. What initially sparked your interest in working in your field? Briefly describe your career path. After getting my bachelor’s degree in architecture, I began teaching as a graduate student in civil engineering and found it to be fulfilling to help others learn. I had the opportunity to apply for a position as an assistant professor teaching courses to students in architecture and construction, and was thrilled to be selected for that position. While teaching, I began to pursue my doctorate degree at Texas A&M University and also worked as a consulting engineer and as a researcher for the US Army Corps of Engineers. I first moved into an administrative role in 1987 as Head of the Department of Civil Engineering and then became Dean of the College of Engineering and Science about 10 years later. In 2004, I was named Vice President of Research and

development and on July 1, 2013, became President. What has been a highlight of your work? Perhaps you and your staff are proud of a certain project or accomplishment. The highlight of my work has been the thousands of students that I have been able to teach or work with. It is most gratifying to see them years after they have gone out and started successful careers. It has also been enjoyable to be a part of a university with a focus on building for the future, and I have been part of many exciting projects. I led the establishment of a Center for Entrepreneurship and Information Technology that has had a significant impact in stimulating entrepreneurship, innovation and economic development at the university and in the community. I am also pleased to have had the opportunity to develop Louisiana Tech’s Enterprise Campus, a research park dedicated to supporting partnerships with the private sector.

Tech Support By Matt Orr, System Analyst at Hi-Tech Computers of Ruston

Don’t fail your back-up Quick, take 10 seconds and tell yourself how all of your files are getting backed up each day. If you fall into that crowd that it only took a couple of seconds to shrug your shoulders and say ‘I have no idea,’ then you are flirting with major problems. If it takes you more than 10 seconds to answer because it’s such a detailed answer you’re giving, then that’s fantastic, but I have another quick question for you: Have you tested your backup solution to make sure it works? Nothing is worse than paying for a backup solution and then needing that spreadsheet you’ve spent 3 days making only to realize that it’s gone and can’t be recovered. Backing up a computer takes so little effort now. There are cloud backup options such as Intronis, Carbonite and even ones like Dropbox that can backup constantly through the day without you having to lift a finger. If you would rather not use cloud backup solutions, there’s nothing wrong with using an automated backup program with an external hard drive plugged into your machine as long as it is done correctly. No matter which option you use, make sure to test the recovery process. If you are a manager or owner of a business that handles medical records, your business is REQUIRED by HIPAA regulations to have an active off-site backup as well as a local backup solution at all times. There are 3 major things that a solid backup plan and solution can save you from: 1) Hardware Failure-It does happen. No matter how much money you spend on a computer or hard drive, new hardware isn’t immune to failure. If your financial software such as Quickbooks, Sage, and Creative Solutions etc. isn’t backed up correctly and daily then you run the

risk of losing this information if the hard drive crashes on you. 2) Natural Disaster- If a fire destroys your building tomorrow, how will you get your business back up and running? If you didn’t have off-site backups, did you have a fireproof hard drive that you’ve been backing up to in your office? Are you going to have to try to re-enter all of that information? Where in the world would you start to do that at? Having a sound backup plan in place can make it to where if your building, and everything in it, is leveled from a fire, tornado or

any other disaster then you can be back up and running in a matter of hours. 3) Theft- Like a natural disaster, theft can cripple your business. If you get broken into and they take the computers and your backup drive that was plugged into the computer as well, then where does that leave you? With the offsite backup being setup and operating properly this will make it where with just an internet connection and another computer to download your information back to, you will be back on your feet. Whatever backup solutions you are

currently using or are looking at going to, keep testing them at least once per quarter. This doesn’t take long and can save you from major downtime and major profit losses! If you have any questions on your company’s current or future backup solutions or if there is anything else we can help you with, please feel free to stop in and see us at 316 E. Georgia Ave here in Ruston or call us at 318255-1110. We are Hi-Tech Computers and we have a full staff dedicated to making your business reach its maximum potential.

Business Spotlight Boys & Girls Clubs of North Central Louisiana (BGC) The 2013-14 school year held many impressive milestones for Boys & Girls Clubs of North Central Louisiana (BGC). Last year, Club Members achieved an overall 2.97 GPA for the 2013-14 school year, and BGC was recognized as the Premier Boys and Girls Club in Louisiana. Of 4,074 US clubs, our local BGC was selected as 1 of only 10 to participate in the SMART GIRLS grant, and BGC’s AmeriCorps Grant was renewed with an additional 12 volunteer slots. BGC served 41,178 meals through the Summer Feeding Program at 10 sites in Lincoln Parish and also awarded 5 Be

Great Scholarships to local seniors. “None of this would have been possible without the support of the community through their contributions both giving of their time and money. This is a prime example of what can happen when the right donors support the right programs with the right resources,” said Chief Professional Officer, Eldonta Osborne. The Club is primarily supported by grants and individual contributions with 70% of all year to date income having been spent on programming for BGC members. To ensure this school year continues last year’s momentum, board member Todd Davison and the BGC Board of Directors has announced two upcoming events celebrating the Color of Hope week: The Color of Hope Celebration Golf Tournament and The Gatsby Gala. The first annual Color of Hope Celebration Golf Tournament will be held Monday, October 27, 2014, at Squire Creek. Teams are $500 and registration closes on October 13, 2014. Teams may register by emailing Janet Wilson at jwilson@ bgcncl.org or by visiting BGC online at bgcncl.org.

The Gatsby Gala The Gatsby Gala, a 1920s-themed evening will be held Thursday, October 30, 2014, at 7pm, also at Squire Creek and will include heavy hors d’oeuvres, cocktails, live music and dancing, as well as silent and live auctions. Guests are encouraged to attend in 1920s attire. Music for The Gatsby Gala will be provided by The Singapore Slingers based out of Dallas, Texas. This quirky eight-member jazz ensemble specializes in selections from the 1900-1935 pre-swing American dance music era. Their repertoire is immense, featuring fox trots, waltzes, marches, one-steps, rags, tangos, rhumbas, exotic- castle walks, the maxixe and, of course, the oriental fox trot. Tickets to The Gatsby Gala are $50 per person and may be purchased

by visiting BGC online at bgcncl. org. BGC also welcomes support for both events via donations of ditty bag items, door prizes, auction items, auction program advertising and general event underwriting. Ditty bag, prize and/or auction donations may be physical items, gift certificates or other in-kind gifts. Sponsorship levels for the golf tournament range from $250 to $5,000. Gala program advertisements begin at $150, and underwriting levels range from $250 to $5,000. And Dr. Les Guice has taken the seat representing LA Tech that was previously filled by Dr. Dean Lumpkin who has also taken a position out of state.

be a huge teacher disconnect as they try to navigate the cultural divide. In addition, there is a cultural competence that must be cultivated as well as developing more nuanced ideas of high expectations for all students with varying ways to show capability. There is also going to be a major language barrier due to the dramatic rise in Englishsecond-language students. I was absolutely shocked to discover the number of languages that our district materials and resources have to be translated into this year in order to serve our students and their parents. However, bringing the community as a whole along with this has proven to be tough for school districts. Rather be a part of the solution, many white, middle-class families have chosen to abandon public school for more affluent and homogenized educational settings. Plus, there is the staggering connection between poverty and diversity. Historically, those students who are low-income have struggled with achievement. The structure of the family, the inability to speak the language, the fact that they may have had no schooling for years, or the massive cultural differences that exist can impede the educational process drastically. What does this mean for Lincoln Parish? First, every citizen must understand that this is the reality our country lives with now. There is no running or hiding from it. In fact, one of the most dangerous things that could happen would be individuals “putting their head in the sand” with the hope that things will revert back to what they used to be. That’s just not going to happen. And that means it is critical that everyone commit to working together to guarantee that our community can continue to prosper in spite of such demographic changes. We must learn to live together equitably and effectively in a manner that puts segregation of any kind on the shelf forever. There must be understanding, acceptance, and respect; it is imperative that our young people be educated in a way that allows the development of such qualities. Like it or not, this is the society that they will be eventually working in and if there is no understanding of how to successfully navigate the waters, then they will be doomed. This begins in our classrooms. All the way down to our youngest students, these future citizens are developing the skills that will equip and empower them for success in what will certainly be a multi-cultural world that we adults can’t even imagine. Therefore, we must work together across the board to be certain that we are providing the most excellent learning experiences in our public schools. Now is the time to know your community and its schools. After all, this is where we will supply the majority of our community’s students with the tools needed in their toolbox for success. And remember, their success is OUR success as well.

What is your area of specialty? Going back to the days when I started with Verizon as a sales rep, I took a special interest in small business accounts. In my opinion, small business owners are the bravest people. Most have left their jobs, sacrificed their life savings and risked it all to pursue their passion. I even left the retail channel to do business sales for some time before coming back to Ruston as a General Manager. One of the most rewarding facets of my job is helping

My team and I look for opportunities to volunteer our services whenever possible. We offer a variety of free wireless workshops where any one from any carrier can come and learn from us. Our classes grew so big that we had to move to the Lincoln Library! We are about to finish remodeling our bay area and will begin having our workshops in our store again beginning the 14th of October.
