IllumiNaughty Design Intern May 2014 - July 2014 Job Roles: Creating various promotional graphics to be used for both web and print use. IllumiNaughty is an events production company based in Manchester. They organise events for festivals, usually having their own stage, they also provide dĂŠcor for such events and corporate events under the name of Visual Architects and also put together their own personal events for Manchester University. I joined the company as part of a design intern working closely alongside the manager. Though my time there was short, I gained a wealth of experience from the various jobs I was tasked with and gained opportunities to be apart of the companies events. The company branding and preferred style consisted of imagery and techniques I had never explored before so it was refreshing to improve my knowledge and learn new skills on such programs like Indesign and Photoshop.

Sin City Event Promotional Flyer A5 Leaflet 2014 Brief was to produce a double sided A5 leaflet for use in advertising an up and coming Halloween event organized by IllumiNaughty. This design would be used for both print and web use. The final design had to incorporate a pre designed image and use fonts that linked to the theme of the event.

Sponsorship Forum A4 Document 2014

Established over seven years, IllumiNaughty has grown from hosting 200 capacity events to becoming the biggest Psytrance event outside London. Since then, IllumiNaughty has seen major success and growth accommodating 1,500 attendees at sell out events in Manchester’s local landmark ‘The Ritz’ (now HMV Ritz) and Mix Mag’s ‘Club of the Year 2011’ Sankeys nightclub. Once firmly established as major players on the Manchester clubbing scene, continual growth and high demand dictated the recent move to Manchester Academy which has enabled the event to accommodate audiences of up to 2,000 people. From a psy-trance event illumiNaughty has been transformed into a multi room indoor festival. Come this November we are looking at expanding event more building the event to 2500 people. IllumiNaughty has truly become Manchester’s indoor festival, an event that weather you’ve been or not you know and respect it for the effort and hard work that goes in. The event is widely appreciated for its original and innovate production, varied musical entertainment, first class, theatrical performance and show stopping visuals and effects. As well as providing a platform for both UK and International acts the event has also nurtured the talents of aspiring local DJ’s, performers and artists. Sunrise Celebration Web Poster 2014 Brief was to create a poster to be used on social networking platforms to advertise what performers IlllumiNaughty were showcasing at Sunrise Celebration that year. Design had to fit in with the Sunrise Celebration branding image.

The aim was to produce a A4 document which would be sent out to companies detailing information and the benefits of sponsoring an IllumiNaughty event. The document had to reflect the IllumiNaughty image and include a selection of photos showcasing the atmosphere of one of their events.

IllumiNasty Logo Digital Logo 2014

During my time there the company was in the process of creating a sister company called IllumiNasty. I was asked to produce the logo for the

new company The theme of the logo had to be apocalyptic, robotic and distorted. Final logo design was created using Adobe Illustrator.

Action Transport Theatre www.actiontransporttheatre.org Freelance Designer Ongoing Client Job Roles: Creating various promotional graphics to be used for both web and print use. Plus organising group events for a young audience. Action Transport Theatre are a production company based in Ellesmere Port, who are also a Arts Council National Portfolio Organisation. They help organise theatre shows all over the North. This could be an in house show or a theatre group looking to expand the interest in their show. They also aid young, up and coming actors and actresses. With theatre work shops and agency work. I came into contact with Action Transport when I was passed an advert looking for a free lance designer to create a small, 6 page activity booklet for children for an up and coming show. Interested I sent over my portfolio and I got the commission. Since then I have had a strong relationship with the theatre group and have become one of their go to designers. I have also organised a number of creative workshops for family fun days inviting people to come along and explore their creative side with arts and craft, animation workshops and even giant colouring boards. The theatre business is an area I never thought of exploring with my work but have enjoyed each and every brief given to me by Action Transport and working for them has given me an idea into the working world of this business. Plus unlike other design jobs, their work has helped me explore creating child friendly graphics. Which is an area I am keen in exploring more of through out my career.

Family Fun Activity Book A5 4 Page Booklet 2014

Brief was to create an activity booklet which could be used to entertain small children before or during a theatre production. Booklet had to incorporate the theme of the show, which was “The Piped Piper and had to be laid out so it could be printed on an A3 sheet and then folded into a 4-page booklet with a full spread on the back.

STATIK Poster & Leaflet A3 Poster & A5 Leaflet 2015 The brief set was to redesign existing promotional material for a theatre show titled “Statik” Design had to use the Statik branding and include the logos of sponsoring partners. The design was to be used as both an A3 poster and a double sided A5 leaflet. The A3 poster had to include a specific blank section where a sticker could be placed. Both variations were created using Indesign with photos of cast members being edited in Photoshop.

Action Transport Brochure A5 12 Page Booklet 2014 The brief set was to design a 12 page brochure filled with information about the company and on 16 up and coming shows host by them. Design and layout was up to me but it had to fit in with the family friendly image of the company and each section had to reflect and fit with the branding/image of the show it was advertising. Layout design was key to completing to brief because I had a limited number of pages to fit quite abit of information into and each section had to stand apart from the other but flow nicely into the next.

Stockport College Junior Designer within the Marketing Department July 2014 - February 2016 Job Roles: Creating promotional material, web banners and informative booklets. What started off as a summer position, it soon grew into a full time job due to such positive feedback through out the company. I joined the marketing department as part of a completely new team after a recent restructure within the company. The new marketing manager saw potential in my working skills and style, this is what lead me to getting a full time contract. The current company style was very corporate in appearance, which is ok for in house documents but the marketing manager understand the college needed a modern look that was appealing to a younger audience for promotional material outside the college and that I would be an asset in understanding this look. This led to me playing a key a part in re branding the whole college image. I also aided the senior designer in putting together a new branding guidelines. My time there has been interesting. Before this I had never designed within the corporate/ business sector, which can be very different than working with entertainment companies. It has helped me explore using my illustration skills in a more graphic design style and helped me understand the marketing of a company and putting together branding guidelines.

Go Further Event Digital Illustration A3 poster and A5 Leaflet 2015

The college ran an in house event to help students progress their education. I designed the look of the event using the image of rocket ship to symbolize pushing the boundaries.

Poster was created with the Stockport college branding at the time of production and was created using Illustrator.

Department Icons Digital Illustrations 2014 After a seeing a previously unused poster I designed, using simple icon illustrations my manager asked if I could create something similar but of each area the college offered to learners. These icons went onto be the bases for the new imagery the collage would use for the prospectus and summer campaign. Students liked the designs because they could use them to easily identify what course they were enquiring about Each icon was drawn in Illustrator and laid out in InDesign.

Art Department Poster A1 Poster 2014

Working with the Colleges art department to design a poster using their own personal imagery. The purpose of the poster was to encourage and inform current students about

staying on and studying higher education courses at the college. Created using Indesign.

Web Banners 958pix x 350pix 2014 -2015

The companies previous website had a scrolling banner. This was used to advertise events, showcase achievements or display important information. It was my job to design the

banners and keep them up to date with the comings and goings of the college’s life.

Supported by S.N.O.G.G Leaflet A5 Leaflet 2015

A group of students as part of a project had designed a concept for an app which would help keep people safe on a night out. I was asked to work with them to create a leaflet to help promote the app. Helping them

understand how to write a design brief and work alongside a client. They wanted a design which reflected the apps function but would appeal to a younger audience.

Inspire Graphic Vector Illustration 2016

I was asked by members of the staff and student development department to design a graphic that would be used in various sections of the college. The brief was pretty open to my ideas, they only wanted

something that reflected people of all ages, gender and culture in various job roles. My time at the college ended before I could see how the graphic was put into use.

Vector City Scape 29ft x 7ft Display Board 2015

The college was going to be attending a school event at Event City, Manchester. I was asked to design the graphic, which would be mounted onto our display board at this event. The message behind the

imagery was how we could progress our learners from their time at college.

School Links A4 Information Sheet 2015 The brief set to me was to take a text document informing a young learner about the local colleges and design something which was more visually appealing. The design needed to look professional, beable to be read by all ages and not follow any of the colleges branding because it needed to advertise them all and not focus sololy on one. However, as part of some company espionage my marketing manager said seeing as we were producing the leaflet we should try and put the focus more on us than the other colleges. I achieved this by the using simple icon images currently mainly used by us, centring our logo and using mainly images of our facilities. No one from the other colleges noticed this and cleared the design.

January Start Campaign Branding Campaign 2015 I was tasked with coming up with the branding which would be used to advertise courses beginning January 2016. My manager wanted me to us the same colours of the current prospectus and also bring back the use of icons but designing a whole new set. I would also have to incorporate photography into some of my graphics. This imagery was used in a number of web graphics on social media platforms and also in newspaper adverts.

Airport Academy Complete Corporate Re brand 2015 -2016

The Airport Academy is a section of the college working in partnership with Manchester Airport and the Job Centre, to help get people careers within that sector. However our offices

at the airport just looked awful and didn’t give off a good impression of the college or the course. I was tasked with giving the academy a fresh new look and improving its overall

Respect

image. This meant visiting the offices and liaising with the company director to see what they wanted. It was quite a big task with them wanting a new front of house and a number of various graphics. The main focus of the new branding I used was the icon of an aeroplane I designed and the use of a striking shade of blue. I jazzed up the front of house by installing a Professional fully branded welcome desk, vinyl window stickers on the doors of our logo and a plasma screen which would be used to advertise courses and any other important information. The main form of graphics I worked on was introducing case study posters to be displayed around the classrooms. Showcasing students who had progressed onto a full time career due to the Airport Academy. One task I also gave myself was that upon my first visit to the academy I found loads of posters meant to inform students and visitors but were designed with no branding or in some cases hand wrote in pencil. I took it upon myself to remove all of these and design new ones that looked professional and fitted in with my new branding image.

7 Habits of Respectful People 1. Smile & say “HI” Its contagious and you could make someone’s day 2. Break the ice Start a conversation with someone new 3. Be fair & communicate respectfully It’s not just what you say, but how you say it. 4. Be a champion of dignity & respect Make a difference, get caught being good and encourage others to do the same. 5. Remember, we all make mistakes It’s OK to ask when you’re not sure. 6. Always listen and show mutual respect People feel respected when they’re being heard and inclusion means everyone regardless of position or title. 7. Be considerate Your Words and actions affect others, saying thank you is a gift that’s never too small to give.

I am part of an artistic crew going by the name of Happy Medium. Though I have only been a part of it for a few years, I have already built up a strong relationship with them and have been able to work with them on some amazing projects in this short space of time. I joined the crew after contacting one of the artists (Mr Kobo) for a review on my portfolio. He saw potential in my work and felt it would work well with the reast of the crews style and invited me along to an event with them. Mainly based in Wales, during the summer periods we travel around the welsh countryside attending music festivals where we create live murals over the course of the event. We have also held are own workshops inviting people to come and give spray-painting a go. We have also held art exhibitions showcasing the groups work or work of projects we have been apart of.

Budai Bee Spray Paint and Posca pens 2014 4ft by 5ft Board

The Happy Medium crew was invited to attend Ymuno festival 2014, a small family friendly festival hosted in Llandudno, Wales. The designs could be of our own making but of course appropriate for all ages. As a crew we decided to use the festivals logo a bee as

inspiration and create our pieces around that imagery. We also took the time to run a small workshop as part of the billing to teach people of all ages about the study of art and the use of the materials we were using.

Y YleTv Spot 2014 and 2015

The Happy Medium crew have been invited on two separate occasions to appear on the Welsh tv show Y Ylle. Taking part to showcase young talent in the area and what is out their for people to experience. The first time was creating a live mural

on camera in the studio and the second was doing a tour of an art show to which we were apart of. Both shows can be viewed following the links sorry but audio is in Welsh. (Y Gornel) (Collab Nation)

Pirate Ghost Monkey’s Wake Stock Festival Spray Paint with Posca Pens 2014 8ft x 5ft board

Wake Stock festival invited Happy Medium to come and paint over a day of their festival. Due to limited time we each decided to share a board and do a small piece each.

To fit in with the theme of the festival we did a pirate/ maritime inspired piece.

Titan Soul T-shirt Design Client: Acid Nerve Digital Illustration Transferred into a Screen Printed T-shirt 2015

Brief was to design a T-shirt to be used as merchandise and promotional material for the developers up and coming game “Titan Souls. Design had to incorporate

the main character and a number of boss’s characters and fit in with the look of the game. Design was created in Illustrator and edited in Photoshop.

Say What Album Cover Client: Cut Capers Digital Illustration to be used on a album cover, CD and T-Shirt Prints.

Brief was to design an album cover that incorporated a selection of chosen buildings from around Bristol, mainly Pero Bridge. It also had to have a slight grungy look to it.

Though the client was open at first to me creating the overall design and look of the album. I ended up working very closely with them to create the final illustration you see here.

French Tour Poster Client: Mouse Outfit Digital Illustration 2013 Poster for a Manchester based Hip Hop group advertising their tour in France. Design was completely up to me but had to include producer’s logos. Poster was used more as a social media poster rather as a printed version. Created in Photoshop.

UK Tour Poster Client: Mouse Outfit Digital Illustration 2014 40 x 30 Second Poster design for a Manchester based Hip Hop group advertising various tour dates around the UK. Client wanted the imagery to be a Mouse Outfit tape amongst rubble, giving the image of them standing the test of time. Created in Photoshop.

Uk Tour Poster Client: Mouse Outfit Digital Illustration 2014 40 x 30 Third poster design. This time client wanted a grungier look in a simple style with a limited colour palette and a mouse amongst a city scape. Poster was used as both printed material and as social media promotion.

Album Launch Poster Client: Mouse Outfit Digital Illustration 2014 80 x 40 Worked with event organizer to create a poster to advertise the group’s album launch night. Organizer had a very set idea in his head so was working around the layout he wanted and mixing it with space jam style background he wanted. Laid out in InDesign with background being created in Photoshop.

Doodle Sticker Pack Vinyl Sticker Pack 2013

A self promotional Sticker pack produced and printed during the end of university to be used at the New Designers Event in London.

Illustrations were based on various doodles in sketchbooks. They were drawn in Illustrator and rendered in Photoshop.

Bushido Sticker Pack Vinyl Sticker Pack 2015

A second personal sticker pack produced after the success of the previous pack. Each design is based on ancient Japanese warriors during the time of the Edo Period. These

designs will be featured in the up and coming sticker bomb book. Each design was drawn in Illustrator and rendered in Photoshop.

Bumble Bee Guardian Digital Illustration 2015 40 x 30

A personal project of mine where I set myself the task to create an illustration that used a shading technique I had never used before and only used a set amount of three colours through out. The design is based on a doodle with a hint of

inspiration from Japanese wood prints. The design has been used as a print and also transferred onto T-shirts.

Tatok Hunting Party Digital Illustration with Mixed Media Elements 2015 40 x 30

A goal of mine is to create my own range of story books suitable for all ages using my style, original stories or tales I have heard and would like to recreate in a visual format. The illustration pictured here is the

character design for the main character from my first book titled “Tatok based on an Inuit ritual.

Ghost Infograph 3750 × 15197 pixels 2016 A personal project where I wanted to create an infographic and create more personal graphic design inspired pieces for use in my portfolio. Infographics are a section of graphic design I really enjoy and have always wanted to design my own but could never come up with a subject matter. This is until I decided to use my love for the game Destiny as inspiration. In RPG games I am a massive hoarder of items and I miss the days when you could buy a poster or magazine which acted as a checklist or showed you the options of a certain item so you knew which one you could aim to achieve. Seeing as I couldn’t find one of these, I decided to take it upon myself to design my own. Where I collected the various designs of the ghost. Detailing the look of each shell, a small description and its in game rarity.

A Couples Journey Vector Illustration 2014 21 x 15

A personal project where I wanted to create a full page illustration using nothing but vectors. This was thought up when I was designing small vector icons in my job and I wanted to see how far I could push this new form of

illustration I was exploring. I mainly used Photoshop to illustrate and render my designs so was quite refreshing to try something new and create a new style I could offer. It also doubled as a present I had forgotten about.
