About Fulton High School Fulton High School opened in 1951 as one of Tennessee’s first comprehensive high schools, combining a complete academic curriculum with a full vocational program. Fulton is located in historic North Knoxville just 5 minutes from the University of Tennessee campus on land formerly known as Scott’s Hill. The school is named for noted industrialist and inventor Weston M. Fulton. Fulton has developed a reputation for turning out graduates who have followed the school motto “enter to learn- go forth to serve.” A tradition of outstanding athletic teams has been born at the school. Famous former Falcons include College Football hall of famer and former Dallas Cowboy D.D. Lewis, UT basketball AllAmerican Bill Justus, former Vol linebacker Jackie Walker, and four-sport letter winner Ron Widby. The Falcons have earned a total of nine state championships in football and basketball. Fulton’s destiny was almost sealed in 1992 when the Knox Co. School Board voted to close the school, but strong protests by alumni and supporters helped to reverse the decision. A fifteen million dollar renovation of Fulton High was completed in 1998 which created new classrooms, including band and music rooms, and a new gymnasium. Fulton High School responded to the challenges of the No Child Left Behind Act during the 2008-2009 school year by completely changing its organizational structure to focus on small learning communities. This change allowed Fulton High School to become an innovative center of learning, and produce students who enter to learn and go forth to serve. Fulton is currently comprised of five different learning communities including the Schools of Communication, Health Science, and Skilled Professions. Seth Smith became Fulton’s new principal in the summer of 2019.

Coach Rob Black enters his ninth season as FHS head coach, and has quickly developed one of the most impressive coaching résumés in Tennessee. His .793 winning percentage ranks as one of the best in all of Tennessee. He became Fulton’s 12th head football coach on January 19, 2011, joining his dad, Bob Black, on the list of FHS head coaches. Under his leadership, Fulton has won three Class 4A state championships, and recorded a program-best 36 game winning streak. Fulton has advanced to at least the state quarterfinals in five of his eight seasons. He is now the second winningest coach in Fulton history, surpassing his coach at Fulton, Steve Brewer. Coach Black led the 2014 Falcons to their second consecutive undefeated season, third consecutive BlueCross Bowl championship, and earned his 50th career victory at Loudon in the state semifinals. The 2014 Falcons earned a national ranking from USA Today. The 2013 Falcons became the first team in school history to complete an undefeated 15-0 season, while setting a TSSAA record for points scored in a season (862). The Falcons defeated Giles Co. for his second Class 4A state championship. In only his second year at the helm, Black led the Falcons to a Class 4A Blue Cross Bowl victory over Covington. He earned state Coach of the Year honors from the TSWA and East Tennessee Coach of the Year honors from PrepXtra in 2012. His eight wins in 2011 tied him with Mac Lambert for the most wins by a first-year FHS coach. Prior to becoming head coach, he served as offensive coordinator for 19 years. He is the architect of Fulton’s record setting multiple formation offense. Nearly every offensive school record has been set during his tenure from 1992-2018 as Offensive Coordinator. Black graduated from Fulton in 1984, and was a three-sport athlete. He played both football and baseball while at Carson-Newman. Black served as a volunteer assistant at Fulton for several years before joining the staff full time in 1991. Coach Black earned his first win as head coach with a 31-14 victory at Pigeon Forge in 2011. He also served as Fulton’s baseball coach from 2002-2005.

@FultonFootball

Starting Off Slow Coach Rob Black’s tenure at Fulton as head coach began with a thud. Fulton lost the first three games of the 2011 season to Morristown West (42-20), West (21-12), and to Austin-East (12-7). The Falcons were well on their way to loss number four to open the season at Pigeon Forge. Fulton trailed the Tigers 146 in the fourth quarter, but a punt return TD by Fred Elder saved the Falcons as Fulton scored 25 unanswered points to rally and win 31-14. Since then, Coach Black’s record at Fulton is 87-20, including eight playoff appearances and three state championships.
