MITSUBISHI MOTORS NZ has taken a top-of-therange Triton 4WD VRX to create a rugged rural beast suited for the roughest back country ranges. “We’ve taken the leader of our Triton pack – the 4WD VRX – and untamed the beast. If our regular Triton is tough, this is the ‘terminator’,” claims Daniel Cook, Mitsubishi’s general manager of vehicle sales and marketing. The Triton Huntaway special edition ute sports a robust TJM front protection bar, custom-wide fenders, roof and front-mounted Narva light bars. It also has a Rhino Rack Pioneer roof tray and personalised decal. Its DTM Fuel Ripper 20 inch wheels are shod with 35 inch Atturo Trail Blade M/T tyres. The Huntaway stands at least 100mm taller than a regular Triton, achieved using front 1 inch spacers between the strut and chassis, 2 inch rear lift blocks and a 2.5 inch body lift. Ensuring the rough stuff is taken care of in its stride, any rocks thrown up are met with resistance from a custom Huntaway undertray. And bigger boulders can be avoided with help from the Evolution 8 Brembo brakes up front and rear disc brakes taken from Pajero Sport. Water is no obstacle: standard equipment includes a snorkel air intake. The designers have also added side steps, a jack rear bar and a fully equipped trade top. In the cab, creature comforts are plenty, including leather sport interior with distinctive Huntaway stitching. – Mark Daniel
THE TAUPO Hand is a multi-purpose extension to enable a front-loader, digger or skid-steer to do a multitude of tasks. Whether it’s used fully open to push silage like a buck-rake, or to grab bales, rocks or logs, the ‘hand’ has proved useful in agricultural or industrial situations. Key to the design is two banks of curved tines that act like a claw; they open 180 degrees to handle large or misshapen loads. The latest Mark 3 version builds on the previous models with extensive use of Bisalloy steels for its construction, closed rear panels to prevent damage to the host machine, and a design that allows the unit to sit flat on the ground when removed. In addition, the Mark 3 units now have larger
grab rams and hi-tensile steel pivot pins with individual grease points for added strength and durability and to tweak the tine profile for best log handling. Goodwood Recycling (Hutchinson Group), at Mount Maunganui, likes the design. It recycles timber waste in the central North Island, much of it kiwifruit and avocado bins that after 20 years use were previously burnt or sent to landfill; it also handles unwanted timber pallets and building industry timber offcuts. This recycled wood goes for playground mulch, cattle bedding and garden mulch, natural or coloured. Standard cattle bedding is produced from recycled pallets, whereas premium bedding comes from the building and joinery offcuts. The latter product has a lower moisture content (6%)
