We’ve had some excellent feedback in response to our call for the best stories you could recall reading in RRL. If you’re reading this before 15 Dec there’s still time to send us your emails (Neville@ rurallifestyle.co.nz) to enter the draw for one of 6 prizes of what I rate to be one of the best Pinot Gris or Pinot Noirs in the country. I’ll reveal the results on our website on Dec 16 and in the next issue. Thanks to all for your emails. It’s pretty clear many of you have good ideas we should also pass on, so we plan to run a reader feedback page from time to time. The main reason I started the magazine was as a vehicle for exchanging information and ideas among lifestylers, farmers and the wider rural community we live in, and now we’d like to publish your tips on what has and hasn’t worked for you on your block. On that note, we need you to complete

our quick 5 minute survey on how well we’re meeting your need for ideas, information and inspiration. It’s a challenging market out there and your feedback will help give advertisers (and potential advertisers) confidence that they are making the right decision by placing their business with us. For your efforts, every one of you who returns the survey (by post or online at www.rurallifestyle.co.nz) by December 21 will be in the draw and one lucky reader will win a fabulous Apple iPod touch with a retail value of $289! I’m really chuffed to feature Helen’s interview with one of our national icons, Jools Topp. Our whole family are huge fans, especially our 6 year old daughter Brianna, who’s been mesmerized since the age of 4 with Jools’s Camp Leader and Lynda’s Camp Mother characters. Aside from brilliant artists, I really think Jools and her twin sister Lynda have helped us look at ourselves as a culture and think about what makes New Zealand a better, richer place to live. We thought Christmas would be a good time to catch up on the latest with Helen’s

menagerie – we have no doubt many of you will identify with the antics she describes in Animal Theatrics. This issue is definitely a keeper!

Mulched Instantly!

4m high gorse…

To this...

Clearing this hillside at the back of Warkworth shows the steepness of the terrain and just how dense the gorse was. The final result is impressive when you consider that in a little more than a day we were able to make such a transformation. No matter how big or how small, 2 acres or 2000 acres, we can mulch any size gorse, all other noxious weeds and trees to below ground level while preserving native vegetation. Using track grips fitted to our digger means our machinery can reach almost anywhere. The major difference is that the mulcher gives an instant result, the gorse is there one moment and gone the next. The mulch is able to rot down and put nutrients into the soil while stopping soil run off when it rains. that includes fibre (hay is a good source), protein (e.g. grains) and some grass, and to trim the bare hooves and leave them unshod. Good, non-invasive trimming is a real skill, which is why the courses run by HOOFNZ take two years to complete. A horse needs to live in a way that as closely as possible resembles its natural environment, Jools tells me, because movement is essential to good health. To achieve this she monitors and manages their exercise by alternating their paddock time with time spent walking on the 10 meter-wide track that weaves through the farm. With water provided in one area and shelter and hay in others, the horses naturally keep moving around the track, exercising their feet and bodies as they go. While Liberty Circle Ranch is the base for Jools’s hoof trimming business Topp Trim and for Michaela and Teresa’s business Vaquera Horsemanship (with the explanatory tag line ‘Horsewomen Trained in the Classical Spanish Tradition of the Working Horse’), for which Jools says she is “the landlord who keeps the paddocks nice”, keeping and riding horses for pleasure is her overriding passion. The style of riding Jools follows is known as Foundation Riding, a method in the tradition of the Spanish Vaquero (cowboy), where the aim is to achieve total harmony between horse and rider. It’s an art and a science, and has masters like revered American cowboys Tom Dorrance, Ray Hunt and Buck Branneman as role models for teaching riders how to work with their horses in the moment, teaching them to become ‘soft’, forming a connection

Michaela, Teresa and Jools with their dogs.

is also important. Horses grazed on cattle pasture containing rye and clover can develop founder (also known as laminitis), a hoof disease which is occurring with an alarmingly high frequency in New Zealand. The barefoot horse movement believes the best way to prevent and cure this is to feed horses a simple, balanced diet

where rider and horse are completely in tune with each other. And while Jools’s “best mate” Intrigue is just in his second year of the seven years’ training it takes to become ‘a bridle horse’, the lovely grey Arab is already doing Jools proud, helping her win Western Riding’s Rookie of the Year in 2010. “There are no shortcuts, so when you take on learning this style of riding you have to be in it for the long haul,” says Jools, “ but once you’ve ridden on a soft horse, where the only thing a horse has to go on is the feel of the rider, you’ll never want to ride any other way. And you always have to remember that you can get the horse to make you look good but that’s not a true partnership. The magic comes from the horse and to ride a horse is not a right, it’s a privilege.” In a very moving sequence in the multi-award-winning documentary The Topp Twins: Untouchable Girls (2009), Lynda talks about how Jools’s horses “stand around and blow on her head” while she is undergoing chemotherapy for breast cancer, and Jools adds, in that way they have of finishing each other’s sentences, ”I can feel them healing me.” Working with horses helps her performance, she believes, because you work them as you work with audiences, by letting them come with you. Jools loves the high profile, singing and entertaining part of her career, but when she’s away on a gig she can’t wait to get back to Helensville. “I feel really lucky. I always wanted a place I could share and pass on some knowledge about horses. In this place I can wake up and have dreamt a whole new song. Living with a tolerant partner on this beautiful property my dreams have come true.”

Horse

vans

By Neville Walker

In the September issue, Sandy Reid discussed factors to consider when buying a horse float. At the time we said we would cover trucks in a future issue, but in the meantime we have found an interesting alternative that is relatively new to New Zealand, horse vans, which in the short time they have been in the country are proving to fill a need. Larissa Mortimer of Horse Vans NZ Ltd, based in Matakana, imports these vans from Europe commercially and now sells the vans from both Matakana and a central North Island location. After just 18 months she can only just keep up with demand and is selling them all over the country. Appreciating that not everyone has the need for outright purchase, Larissa is now also able to rent out or finance/lease the horse vans as a convenient alternative. When I ask Larissa how her involvement in the vans came about she explains that she’d had a horse that travelled badly in a float. “It used to scramble up the sides, and then it would half fall down and pop up again.” Larissa spotted the vans in magazines her mother-in-law bought back from the UK in early 2009. The rear-facing orientation inside complements the horse’s natural physiology. For example, when the vehicle is braking it is easier for a horse to be facing the rear because it will lean back into its hocks where all the strength is, instead of being thrown forward. “With its head and shoulders at the back it can use its head to counterbalance and lean through corners with the shoulders,” Larissa says. She also saw that a van would solve the whole

hooking up, towing and reversing issue that floats present. Larissa researched the idea for a further year before deciding to set up Horse Vans NZ Ltd to cater to horse owners who had similar needs. The coachbuilder she works with in the UK was the first to develop and build these horse vans some years ago. As a result of many years of trial and error, he uses materials with the strength and robustness to be able to carry heavy payloads across many miles of less-thanforgiving roads. While horses have been known to kick through the sides of other horse vans, it has never happened to any of this coach builder’s vans.

transport horses and equestrian products, enabling the vans to double as trade stands. The vans drive very well laden or empty and are economical at 8L of diesel per 100km. Because drivers don’t need a heavy transport licence, anyone can jump in and operate the vehicle as needed. The purchase options are $52,400+GST for the smaller size and $65,700+GST for the medium. Just released is a larger version designed originally for the Australian market and manufactured

The side entry to the van is up a short ramp and is easy to lift and lower. Partitions in the centre are high, giving support and confidence to the horse. Internal LED lighting works well, with very little drain on battery power when the vehicle is not running and with cameras on the horse area and reversing cameras at the back of the van, it’s easy to know what’s going on at any stage of the journey. In addition, sliding viewing windows from the cab to the back make it easy to chat to the horse, helping keep a nervous horse calm. Larissa does all the drawing up and speccing and each van can be customised to the buyer’s wish list. This includes those equine businesses that need to

Flower

power By Grant McKechnie

Melia azedarach.

The purple-tinged leaf of the Chinese tulip tree.

At this time of year, nature seems to be in the grip of flower power. Everywhere we look, there are trees and shrubs that have just finished their spring flowering, or are now in full bloom, or are just about to start. Flowers give us beauty and colour, plus food for the birds and bees, and they also herald – hopefully anyway – long fine days, barbecues, Christmas, holidays and all things nice. There are not too many drawbacks with flowers, but some people won’t have prolific flowering plants because they don’t like the petals falling on the ground. I always think gardens are very personal places and should be what the home-owner wants them to be, so personal choice is important, but it still surprises me that

petals should get a plant banished from the garden. Mostly by men, I’d have to say. Part of the enjoyment of flowering plants, for me, is petal fall and the carpet it forms on the ground. So from that point of view, the messier the better, as far as I’m concerned. Some of the best at making a mess are the sasanqua camellias, which have masses of flowers in autumn. They come in white, pink or red varieties, make excellent hedges and are great additions to a mixed border. The sasanquas are hardy to strong winds and will grow in sun or shade. For flowering trees which make virtually

no mess at all, yet still manage to look special, horse chestnuts are hard to beat. They have big upright clusters of flowers that look a bit like a candelabra, around 20cm high. Aesculus hippocastanum is the white-flowered version, and Aesculus x carnea is a pink-flowered variety. Both flower in spring, the white first and the pink starting about a week later. Use them as a shade tree in the middle of the lawn or paddock, or for lining your drive. They’re deciduous and not particularly fast growers, but ultimately big trees. Have a look at the magnificent specimens in Cambridge next time you’re passing through.

The albizzia has showy pink flowers.

A pink horse chestnut in bloom.

While we’re on the subject of shade trees and drive liners, Melia azedarach (Indian lilac or bead tree) is good value. In spring, soon after the new leaves appear, it produces big panicles of lilac flowers. Melia is colourful in autumn too, with leaves that turn gold before dropping to reveal clusters of yellow berries, which the birds like. Another family of big deciduous trees with beautiful flowers are the liriodendrons. The North American species, Liriodendron tulipifera, and the less well-known Liriodendron chinense (the

Liriodendron chinense’s new leaves are tinted purple; both have good yellow autumn colour. Liriodendron flowers sit on top of the leaves, a bit like those of Albizzia julibrissin rosea, the silk tree. Deciduous, with fern-like leaves, albizzia forms an excellent umbrella-shaped shade tree, with masses of fluffy pink flowers across the crown in summer. It’s regarded as one of the showiest of trees, especially when viewed from above. Back at the beginning of this article, I was rambling on about barbecues and hot summer days. What could be more synonymous with a New Zealand summer than the bright red pohutukawa flower? Everyone knows the pohutukawa (Metrosideros excelsa), but I always feel it is a bit underused in domestic landscapes, even though it is common enough in public landscaping. It is such a tough plant, surviving extremely poor soils, dryness and the very worst of winds. If you need a specimen for a bleak spot, pohutukawa could be the answer. It’s quite happy in good conditions too, but a little frost tender when young. It is easy to keep trimmed and makes great hedges. Birds and bees love the pohutukawa nectar and an old Maori remedy prescribes its use for sore throats. Not all pohutukawa have red flowers; there is a yellow-flowered variety discovered on Motiti Island in the 1940s.

emerging here?), a much-loved hen. I won’t describe all the twists and turns in the ‘destroy Barry saga’, suffice to say she now lives separately in our hen nursery and her wounds are healing.

Animal

theatrics

By Helen Martin

In my last chook report (Issue 33) I described how Zeus, our big, handsome rooster, liked to fly at us full frontal in the hopes of drawing blood. We always left the house with a large stick but still, at times Zeus scored. We have the scars. Our city friends, who have never owned a single chook, advised us through thin lips to learn about breeds. Looking up “Plymouth Barred Rock’ we read that “in terms of temperament, both roosters and hens are calm and will get along well with people and other animals such as pets”. Yeah, right! Zeus lost his mojo when a virus made him incurably lame and weak, and so it was that his days, and his reign of terror, ended courtesy of a very nice vet. (We couldn’t do him in. After a mere 6 years in the country we’re still in the early stages of hardening up). He’s in our Pet Sematary now and he’s very quiet. When Zeus’s sons were chickens they were calm. Was Wikipedia was right, we wondered, was their father’s aberrant behaviour prompted by personal issues? We’d bought him off Trade Me and who knows what sort of childhood he’d had? With Zeus gone and the hormones raging, Zeus Two (looking just like his dad, only smaller) and crazy-looking Sheldon (his mother’s a Frizzle and the genes went wild) bided their time, concentrating on perfecting the finer points of crowing, wing flapping and, of course, mating experimentally with our nine hens. And then, pardon the inevitable pun, they started to show their stripes. The short version of what came next is that Zeus Two and Sheldon took it upon themselves not to terrorise us, but to destroy Barry, another Plymouth Barred Rock from Trade Me (is there a pattern

14

RURAL LIFESTYLE ISSUE 51

Life became peaceful when we banished Zeus Two to a feral life in our neighbour’s bush. He made his way home two weeks later and for an afternoon our place was the scene of a bloody pitched battle, brother against brother, as he and Sheldon duked it out for top flock spot, while Keith and I chased the fighting roosters from one end of the garden to the other. Finally, we hatched a cunning plan and cornered him. Having arranged his immediate dispatch via our obliging neighbours we were instead delighted with an unexpected happy ending when they found him a new home. But will he make it back from Taupaki? Since we moved to the country we go to the theatre less often, but who needs it when there’s theatre-in-the round 24/7 at home? The chooks are not the only characters on this 5-acre stage. There are always cat dramas, like the Roger saga. A beautiful but cunning feral cat, Roger moved in for a while but our resident cats, tired of being beaten up, took off. We had to carry big, bold Boswell in from his hiding place in the bush, and take him into every room to show him Roger-the-lodger had vanished, before he deigned to move back in. For a change in tone dog dramas, as any dog owner knows, are mostly in the comic genre and Molly’s antics provide us with endless entertainment. It’s difficult to categorise the guinea pig narrative, but I’m thinking ‘tragi-comedy’. Here’s the outline:

Act One Set up: we foster two female SPCA guinea pigs, who arrive with instructions they are to live inside ‘to be socialised’ (!) Fatal plot mistake 1: we name them. Fatal plot mistake 2: we buy a cage off Trade Me and move Google and Yahoo outside. Fatal plot mistake 3: we stop talking about “when they go back to the SPCA”. Fatal plot mistake 4: we prevaricate when visiting friends ask when we’ll be “getting rid of them.” Inciting incident/catalyst: Yahoo gives birth to 3 babies in rude good health.

Act Two Banished to single men’s accommodation

Butter wouldn’t melt.

Yahoo consoles Allan after his cat encounter.

in a small cage beside his growing family, Google can look, but he can’t touch. We daily ransack the garden for the tonnage of silverbeet and puha required to feed Yahoo, Google, Edgar, Allan and Poe. (Fatal plot mistake 5: we name the babies). The babies grow. They learn to dig. Climax: Allan escapes. Beryl catches him and takes off under the house. Molly, Mr Blue and Boswell join in the chase. Keith, risking death in the narrow space under the house, wrests Allan from Beryl’s jaws. Edgar and Poe escape. In the half hour it takes to catch them the dinner is ruined.

Act Three Mother and babies are transferred to the small cage, which has a floor. In the large cage Google dreams of reunion. Dénouement: the sun is setting. Inside the house cower an arthritic dog, three clapped out cats and Keith and I, broken, frail, incontinent, too frightened to open the door. Outside, a hideous cacophony of crows and shrieks rends the air as a thousand rampaging roosters and their huge hen harem scratch desperately in the dirt for food. About their feet swarms a plague of multi-coloured guinea pigs, some old, some young, many heavily pregnant, and all of them have names.

Wetland restoration on a

shoestring

By Neville Walker

We’ve been planning to restore our wetland area for some time. Our problem has been that, in common with other landowners we talk to, we’ve found contemplating the whole process quite daunting, with questions about where to start, how to get the job done without committing huge wodges of cash to it and how to make sure it doesn’t drift on forever. But I’m happy to say I’ve finally found the inspiration to start and through these pages I’m going to describe step-by-step how to get the job done on minimal (or no) budget.

Weed spraying Revegetation Pond Management

It’s important to note that nowadays wetland restoration is being mostly driven by the benefits that come from subdivision. The provision within the District Plan to allow subdivision of land where a qualifying wetland exists is one big reason but there are many subdivisons approved. However there are soft benefits too, such as improved bird and aquatic life. We have covered in past issues how council determines if you have a qualifiable wetland (Issue 15). But if you would like me to describe how to get hold of

The willow weed is easily controlled with glyphosate but it is also easy to pull out by hand.

many years ago during our property’s farmland phase or early subdivision someone thought the idea of planting these trees to soak up the dampness would be a good idea to grab more surrounding pasture for grazing. The first step for me is to knock back the weeds, as they are preventing any true wetland plant species growing there now from flourishing. (I suspect that flax is the only plant in that category.) On first inspection I can’t see much over the willow weed. I don’t want to be up to my knees in swamp ripping out weed by hand, so spraying is the answer. What can I spray around wetland areas and waterways that won’t harm aquatic life?

A 'river' of willow weed, large trees and blackberry will need to be cleared to allow the native wetland species to flourish.

an aerial photo of your property and have the area mapped out to see if it would potentially qualify for subdivision get in touch (see Vegetation Specialists ad on previous page for details). So where do we start? At present our wetland area is covered in buttercup and a variety of weeds, with a thick ‘stream’ of willow weed and some flax, birch trees, and willow trees. Presumably

Safeguard your family with the best value in under-bench filtration. • Removes 99.99% of bacteria and viruses. • Chloride removal.

I consult with Dave Beattie (of Vegetation Specialists), who tells me there are chemical sprays available for controlling weeds in or near waterways. Reglone® can be used in ponds (Issue 48) for the control of submerged weeds. For weeds above the ground or surface, Glyphosate (or Roundup®) is commonly used as long as no penetrants are incorporated. Some formulations of Glypohsate are specifically suited for use on or near waterways so check the label first. You may find you’ll need to be an Approved Handler for purchase of some herbicides like Reglone®. But I do have to say, for the sake of $180-$200/ha it’s a whole lot easier (and efficient on time and spray use) to call in someone like Dave, with the appropriate qualifications and experience, to do the job. Once the weeds are under control I expect to be able to start the process of planting some species early in the New Year. I’ll be keeping our website www.rurallifestyle.co.nz updated regularly with developments over the coming weeks and months, but do write in with your questions or tips if you have ideas to pass on – Neville@ruralifestyle.co.nz or write to me (address details below the editorial).
