Some people think it cruel that I should be selling pork right next to grazing pigs. I have to tell them that the pigs don’t actually understand, believe it or not, what’s happening on the other side of the fence from their field!

Then he set up his own company of mortgage brokers before ‘retiring’ to be a dairy farmer and now a pig farmer with an ever expanding business - it can capitalise on the interest in ‘local produce’ and ‘localism’ that have now come to the fore. The figures speak for themselves: Since starting the business in 12 years ago, annual turnover has risen from £20,000 to £200,000. ‘Not bad for a tiny part-time job,’ he said, stressing the figures were turnover, not profit.

He has been known recently to talk about retiring… was that a consideration at the moment? A giggle came from nearby where his wife, Jenny, was sitting. ‘He keeps on saying that,’ she said. ‘I say to him: “If you retire, what would you do?” He always replies: “I’d find something else to do.” Yes, he would, and then he’d go and make a success of that as well. He always has to have a purpose.’
