outh Devon might be a good four hour drive down the motorway, but this gorgeous area bursting with natural beauty, quaint villages, rolling hills and miles and miles of peace and quiet, offers a whole different pace and quality of life. “We always say that there’s a reason it takes a bit longer to get here, but that it’s so worth it,” laughs Hazel Bustin, who runs the luxury cottages we’re staying in with her husband John. She’s completely right, and West Charleton Grange itself provides a perfect base to explore this wonderful area. The Grange has six cottages nestled into the steep hillside with views across the valley. All the cottages are furnished to the highest standards, with plush carpets, large generously fitted kitchens, private outdoor terraces and large bedrooms. West Wing House is the star turn here, a large house with a private terrace, rustic sitting room and Victorian roll top bath. Twysden and Tickell Cottages afford some of the loveliest views, with special sunny spots in the sitting rooms, complete with floor to ceiling windows and wicker armchairs. We’re staying in Pypard Cottage a sweet two bedroom house with a large kitchen and great terrace providing views across the lawn and over to the hills beyond. The grounds at the Grange are extensive and well thought out, stepped

terraces, seating areas and a built-in barbeque space offer lovely places to sit in the sun, Wendy houses, cubby holes and climbing frames keep little ones busy for hours, while the heated indoor pool, tennis court, options for canoeing and even an onsite personal trainer means those looking to leave feeling fitter and healthier have plenty of options. You can also arrange for a personal massage therapist to do treatments in your cottages – essential weekend escapism. We arrive later than we would like on a Friday evening, and it’s a wonderful relief to finally be here. The cottage is warm and welcoming, a bottle of wine awaits us on the kitchen table, along with a pre-ordered platter of fresh seafood, and their introductory hamper of fresh fish pie, teabags, fresh coffee, milk, scones, clotted cream, jam, organic bread, eggs, bacon and sausages. We grab a cold bottle of wine and head to the terrace to catch the last rays of sunshine and take in the peace and fresh country air. Horse graze quietly in the fields opposite, we dine on lobster, fresh crab and giant prawns – and we can feel the city stress just ebbing away. After a long, indulgent sleep we rise the next morning to a beautiful day and head to the stunning indoor pool for a pre-breakfast swim, before enjoying toast, jam and coffee for breakfast in the sunshine. Then it’s a gentle walk throughout the farmland and down to

the estuary, before ending up at The Millbrook Inn in South Pool for lunch. This great little local pub has just won two major national awards - Kitchen Team and Pub Chef of the Year – and it’s not hard to see why. We grab a spot in the suntrap behind the pub while a brook gurgles gently by and, prewarned that the Millbrook specialises in fish, order Start Bay crab salad with smoked salmon, avocado and basil oil, and River Exe Moules, with garlic, thyme and white wine broth. Matched with a pint of Millbook IPA and a glass of cold of rose, the dishes are at the same time simple and exquisite. We want to stay sitting in the Millbrooks’ quiet charm all afternoon, but it’s time to head into Kingsbridge for a spot of pampering. A quick drive round the estuary and we arrive at Haven Spa and Therapy, which offers an impressive range of treatments for a small town. The other half has a soothing Hydrotherapy bath followed by a relaxing Swedish massage – both of which he says are so calming he falls asleep several times. My treatment starts off with their signature Calming Massage and Facial. My therapist Heidi is excellent at pinpointing the stress knots in my back and I can feel myself completely zoning out. The facial, as with all their treatments, uses natural Spa Find products, which utilise Dead Sea

The unpredictable spring weather means spring fashion needs to be hugely flexible, but as a general rule you can’t go wrong with bold colours and shorter sleeves paired with a cute blazer and a light cotton scarf – we all know layering is the key to a changeable climate! This month’s issue is handily packed full of fashion features designed to ensure you are absolutely on trend this month. Our colour blocking fashion shoot provides a chic twist on this bold style (p.20), while we also speak to Kate Moss ahead of her latest collaboration with Longchamp, about personal style, the London scene and what she has in her handbag (p.28).

Selling luxury skiwear, and even property, is as simple as understanding the lifestyle, and details, details, details. Emma Mills talks shop with local property developer and skiwear mogul Paul Goldstein

I

don’t mean to be trite, but when Paul Goldstein walks into the room, you pay attention. And the room pays attention. Warm, friendly, boisterous and charismatic, Paul’s energy is infectious. He kicks off our interview by regaling a hilarious story about having his car blocked in the night before, all the while taking several calls from other people, including his best friend who he is arranging to see the football with at the weekend. “Not sure how this season is going to pan out,” he muses, before launching into a rant about Manchester United and Chelsea. It’s time for some questions, I think. So, tell me, how does a local lad from the East End get into the luxury skiwear market? “Hmm, dates, dates...” he says. “Right. Came out of university in ’76. No jobs . Awful economic period, three day power cuts. It was awful. You know when you come out of university, you think you’ve arrived, you’ve spent all summer revising by candlelight, putting up with scheduled power cuts, and then you come out with this degree, and there’s nothing. There’s just no work. So I got a job in a ski shop for a while. My Dad was furious. Then I did a ski season, and out there I met a guy who made skiwear and I thought it was cool. And I thought that I could sell it.” Paul fires out details with a scattergun approach, shooting stats and facts amid personal anecdotes and comments about the industry around the room. It’s hard to keep up, but I’m starting to get an idea about how much he’s packed into his life already. Having sealed the deal to sell Anzi Besson skiwear in the UK, Paul set up his company, Nevica – which means ‘it’s snowing’ in Italian, in 1978. The company’s original function was as the UK distributor for the Anzi Besson clothing line, but after two years, Paul decided to launch his own brand of ski clothing, with him at the helm as head designer. “I think the big breakthrough came in 1984,” recalls Paul. “I decided to utilise fluorescent and neon colours in ski wear. No one was doing this. It was totally new. And because of this, we had enormous growth. The niche we had was colour – bright, striking, stylish. The slopes had become dull places to be, heavy mountain wear, followed by loose fitting parachute silk – awful, it was like something from Dallas,” he grimaces. With an eye for colour, extreme styling and a rigorous, almost evangelical, approach to technical design, Nevica creations became the fashion skiwear of the era; the

market leader throughout the eighties and early nineties. At its peak Nevica was distributed worldwide in 32 countries and produced 400,000 ski suits a year Having made his mark on commercial skiwear, Paul was then approached in 1993 by French company Killy to turn around its floundering fortunes. Founded in 1975 by Jean-Claude Killy (triple Olympic gold medal winner in the ‘68 winter games), it had always been

regarded as one of the premium ski clothing product lines, but changes in the industry had left it needing direction and inspiration. “I bought the company, and ran it for 14 years. I turned it from being a sad, shadow of what it had become to a major international brand again. It was great to make something luxury, to really spend that time on it,” he recalls. “It wasn’t so much about volume as style. It was like selling Ford for years, and then selling Aston Martin. People would come in and ask for discounts, and we just didn’t give them – we didn’t need to. It was my dream.” And a successful one at that; Paul worked with Killy for 13 years, until in 2006 when he and the company parted ways. Frustrated by the limitations of designing a brand under licence, he sought to break free and launch his own luxury brand to the market.

So in 2007, his new brand E&O hit the market, a chic, luxury design utilising Paul’s 30 years experience in the industry. “You’ve got to have a good eye for colour, and understand fabric. I understood the form, and what you would want from it. We were detail people. Our details were extraordinary – we had thought about every single pocket, where it went, what you put it in, which way the zips closed...it’s not just a jacket, it’s a piece of engineering.” This is the nub of what has made Paul successful. As a long time skier he had immersed himself in what people wanted from their ski wear – and he designed jackets and trousers that he wanted to wear, pieces that worked for skiers. “The critical point of getting our clothing to work was to marry designers with the commercial reality. People used to ask me why we didn’t do snowboard gear. But I don’t snowboard so I can’t design for snowboarders. It might have been commercially the right thing to do, but if I don’t get it I can’t design it.” This creative vision is what has lead Paul to have the same success with his property development ventures, amazing high-end luxury apartments which have been bought by the likes of footballers Samir Nasri and Cesc Fabregas. “Just as with skiwear, I see the way people should live,” he adds. Paul started off his property work by redesigning his own chalet, working with a French architect, who was skilled in creating stunning traditional mountain properties. “At first he was shocked when I told him what I wanted to do. He thought it was awful,” laughs Paul. “I had to fly him to London to show him how I wanted the bathroom! In the end, the chalet was beautiful, traditional wooden design, but with an added modern twist – chic kitchen, smart bathroom, a cinema, an indoor pool, a centralised music system. His wife came round when it was finished and loved it so much she made him change their own chalet!” Looking at these images, it’s clear to see why the chalet was a success. Paul has a great capacity for understanding what people want from luxury items – whether it’s skiwear, houses or even boats, which he has also dabbled in. Not only does he live the luxury life - in Belsize Park which he says has an urban feel which he loves - but he also understands how to translate that luxury lifestyle into the products and houses he sells. “It’s about identity, you have to understand who you’re selling to. I’ve built and developed properties in Knightsbridge, Hampstead and Belsize Park – and they’re all different. Because they should be. You have to build differently for where you are, and who you are selling to,” he says. Paul is now working on a new Hampstead property, in Telegraph Hill, and is clearly treating this project with the same time and attention to detail that he has all the others. “We’ve changed the plans so many times. But it’s vital – I know we’re changing everything, and it takes time, but we have to. I have a view of what owners will want, and it’s crucial I stick to that. It’s the biggest purchase you make, and anyone that buys a house should live like a king. I want them to live the dream,” he finishes with a flourish. n

has so many hidden treasures,” explains one resident. “There’s always somewhere great to go for coffee of an afternoon and someone to share a chat with. It’s a really friendly place,” she adds. One such hideaway is the delightful Bake-a-boo, a retro bakery and teashop on Mill Lane. On a Saturday afternoon, there are few places as popular for meeting with friends, largely owing to a tempting menu of treats. Here, finger sandwiches, fruit crumbles and cupcake towers are served alongside specialities suitable for those with intolerances including wheat, gluten and dairy. Another great time to pop by is during the cafe’s craft events, which offer locals the chance to create various trinkets as they indulge. These workshops have become a favourite for laid-back birthday parties

and gatherings and are a perfect opportunity to immerse oneself in the cosmopolitan culture of the village. Those seeking supper will love The Green Room, which tucks stylish décor and a delicious European menu behind an unassuming slate grey frontage. In fact, the restaurant is all the more charming for being so understated. Owner Laurent Richer trained in Paris before acquiring experience at London’s Landmark and Soho hotels and presides over a menu of fresh sea bass, beef and aubergine caviar, which is drawing discerning diners from far and wide. One particular favourite is the Czech and Slovak Bar and Restaurant, an authentic club-style venue which serves adventurous cuisine and traditional alcohol brands. Admittedly the key to this venue is not sleek city style, but a laid-back atmosphere, and its décor has

changed little since its 1940’s creation. However, its continuing presence epitomises the friendly, eclectic nature of West Hampstead and it remains and interesting place to eat and drink. While many would regard the High Street in central Hampstead as a shopper’s paradise, West Hampstead itself has a unique charm. The bottlegreen awning of West End Lane Books alludes to the character of this librarystyle destination, which offers over 13,000 titles. The store also regularly arranges talks from local authors which guarantee its place on many a school trip itinerary. Further along West End Lane, you will find delicious antipasti and homemade meals, courtesy of the Italian delicatessen, Gustoso. Following on from the success of the vibrant outlet in Maida Vale, the decision to open in West Hampstead is reflective of how

chic and modern the area has become. Gustoso joins at least two other stores in West End Lane which offer tasty tapas and organic fare to affluent clientele. These healthy shoppers are also wellplaced to benefit from the area’s fitness facilities. There are boutique power plate centres, such as Movers and Shapers, which offer drop-in style facilities for busy professionals, as well as various personal trainers operating nearby. Late last year also saw the opening of ‘The Gym’ a dedicated suite of high-tech exercise equipment, offering all the tools for an intensive cardiovascular and strength workout. Although West Hampstead is an obviously attractive lifestyle destination, in property terms it has retained its image as a more affordable option than Hampstead. Conversely, the perception of this relaxed vibe is now driving

up prices and many families are now seeking the red brick semi-detached homes which form much of the area. “West Hampstead has always been popular with families who sought more space in this area,” comments one estate agent. “However, we are now

West Hampstead has made its mark as an attractive lifestyle destination and it now presents a great option for property too seeing young professionals snapping up property too. These individuals are looking for bars and restaurants, with access to greater London.”

It is not hard to understand how West Hampstead has shed its reputation as the lesser-known alternative to Belsize Park and Maida Vale. Not least because it sits firmly amongst the action. Nestled in the London Borough of Camden, the aforementioned neighbourhoods lie to the south and east. In addition, Golders Green is just north, while Kilburn is to west, making it a bonafied NW haven. This means that great schools, cinemas and parklands are on the doorstep and the West Hampstead crowd are an approachable and well-educated mix. However, it is not only those people who move to the area that can appreciate its amenities and atmosphere. Book a light lunch, pick up quirky and creative gifts and schedule a night out – West Hampstead has arrived. n

With the Longchamp and Kate Moss partnership proving one of the most popular design collaborations of recent times, Gabrielle Lane talks to the style icon about the SS11 bag collection

I

t has been eight seasons, a veritable lifetime in fashion terms, since Kate Moss became the face of luxury leather brand Longchamp. While the appeal of her signature boho aesthetic is unquestionable, few would have imagined quite how successfully the St John’s Wood resident has handled the transition from beautiful muse to bankable designer. For it is the collaboration between Kate and Longchamp’s artistic director, Sophie Delafontaine, which has produced consistently covetable bag collections. The 12-strong range of designs features colourful basket bags, attractive satchels fashioned from ecru canvas and messenger-style pieces

with braided leather straps, all perfect for summer and in keeping with the model’s key theme. “I was inspired to work around the idea of travel and faraway places,” explains Kate. “I travelled with Mario Testino for the opening of his Portraits exhibition at the Museo de Arte in Lima. We were only there for five days, but it felt very exotic, very different from anywhere I’d been before.” The oversized Gloucester duffle bag in cognac leather is just the sort of handsome trunk you can imagine piling your possessions into, before hitting the open road. The design is compact enough to make travelling practical, yet has a

chic, utilitarian feel. “All of the bags reflect the type I want to carry in a particular place at a particular time. I love the Gloucester travel bag for weekends,” agrees Kate. Another personal favourite is the Peruvian beach bag, which reflects the model’s laid-back and comfortable style. “I’d like to be able to run if I had to,” says Kate. “I love the idea of a throw-everything-in bag, one that you can take to the beach, but that can also go shopping.” When questioned about her own handbag essentials (a Blackberry, her Vintage Muse perfume, Longchamp purse, digital camera and sunglasses) it becomes clear that one of the reasons why the Longchamp and Moss partnership

Bubbles & crocuses This year’s Chelsea Flower Show promises to be a champagne-filled affair, says Lana Jordan

T

he Chelsea Flower Show has served as an annual celebration of fine horticulture since the Royal Society’s spring shows of 1833. These days, the lavish five day event features an array of gardens, planned by internationally eminent designers in collaboration with various businesses who are proud to support the event. This year the show theme is ‘Nature and Human Intervention’ and will include a fabulous display prepared for luxe champagne brand LaurentPerrier by the award-winning creator Luciano Giubbileti. It is the 13th time that Laurent Perrier have produced a garden, having won several gold medals for their previous attempts. However, this year the team are particularly excited. “The theme of this year’s garden is highly appropriate. Demonstrating the process of nature and human intervention, Laurent-Perrier has been handcrafting a fine and diverse

range of champagnes from the Grand Cru vineyards of Champagne since 1812,” says managing director, David Hesketh MW. The garden will feature two distinct areas which reflect the shared philosophy of nature and architecture. The first will be a calm and relaxing space for contemplation,

Both parts will use a beautiful palette of maroon, bronze and pale pink to reflect the brand’s Cuvée Rosé champagne, which is also intended to create a romantic atmosphere. Randall-Page, as well as a sensory bamboo pavilion by Kengo Kuma, which are sure to add interest. For those who are particularly enamoured with the design, there will be the opportunity to purchase the plants online from the supplier, www.crocus.co.uk and over 80 per cent of the garden is planned for re-use as part of a large residential estate. This is an important part of the work which honours environmental sustainability. Breathe easy Bryan D Sheinman, vice chairman of The Wellington Respiratory Unit, discusses the issues, and solutions, facing asthma suffers today

Asthma remains a very sizeable problem in the UK and indeed worldwide. Approximately one in eleven children in this country suffers from asthma and something between seven and nine per cent, (one in 12) adults. In the UK, asthma continues to kill approximately 1,200 people per year, the majority of them young, and this rate has not really changed a great deal in recent years despite improvements in asthma management. Approximately 60 per cent of patients with asthma lose one or more working days because of asthma, which costs the NHS about ÂŁ1bn a year to treat.

One might be forgiven for asking why, in view of massive interest and investment in asthma research, the medical profession has not solved the problem? Indeed, if you had told me as a young asthma researcher thirty years ago that by 2011 we would still be seeking answers, I would probably have been incredulous myself. It nevertheless remains a fact that despite an explosion in understanding at structural, cellular and molecular levels, we are a long way from solving the problem. Part of the reason for this is that asthma is not a single homogeneous disease. For example, approximately 90 per cent of children have an underlying

allergic basis for their illness, but only half of adults, and the reasons for this remain far from clear. We also know that where allergy exists, particularly to house dust mites, practical everyday measures to reduce mite levels are not effective in reducing symptoms. There is however, at least some good news. If there is a joy in asthma treatment today, it is that tiny doses of drugs can be inhaled into the lung, meaning pills, which produce high circulating levels of the drug along with considerable side effects, are not needed. Inhaled drug treatments are becoming increasingly sophisticated and may involve the use of specialised long-acting bronchodilators in combination with inhaled corticosteroids. Such regimes have brought new levels of control within easy reach of very large numbers of patients. Newer treatment modalities have also come into use such as the compound omalizumab, given by two-four weekly intramuscular injection. This novel approach aims to reduce circulating antibody (IgE) levels, a crucial component of the asthmatic reaction. At present we are only using this drug in asthmatics who are not responding well to other treatments, but the results are encouraging. We now know that meticulous attention to detail can reduce hospitalisations for asthma and that the use of personalised asthma management plans - that is to say, what to do when things go wrong – plays a crucial part in reducing admission rates. Asthma physicians and specialist nurses now spend a great deal of time in generating these plans, which remains the mainstay of our approach. What is clear is that we need to understand the patients as well as the drugs – one without the other cannot work – and if you suffer from asthma, a strong working relationship with your doctor is crucial.

It looks great and runs pretty well too. So, asks Matthew Carter, does this mean the Audi A7 Sportback is about to sound the death knell of the executive saloon?

F

unny how attitudes change. A few years back, a hatchback was something rather mundane, a workmanlike Golf or Focus, a car with ‘practical’ as its middle name. Businessmen never drove hatchbacks. That was left to housewives taking the kids to school or heading for the supermarket car park. Nowadays, that’s all changed: mums use the upmarket 4x4s, while businessmen drive hatchbacks. Except, of course, they’d never call them hatchbacks. The Audi A7 is a case in point. It has four doors and a rear tailgate that lifts all the way up; it’s a hatchback. Except that Audi prefers to call it a Sportback, adding the slogan: “Executive transport with a new slant”. The A7 is yet another niche machine from Audi. It’s aimed at those who don’t want a dull saloon, but don’t need a huge estate, who fancy a little sporting style but still need four seats. That’s pretty precise targeting. Audi’s A7 – like the smaller A5 Sportback before it – is a four-door coupé in the style of the Mercedes CLS. And stylish it certainly is, especially when placed next to BMW’s take on the four-door coupé market – the 5 Series GT, a lumpy, frumpy machine. In fact, I’d go so far as to say that the A7 is one of the most elegant cars on the road, especially from the side where frameless side windows and a swooping roofline give the back end more than a hint of classic Aston Martin DBS. The front aspect, though, is pretty blunt. The deep Audi grille makes it look like, er, every other modern Audi on the road: head on, you really need to know your cars to identify which is which. In a few respects, the A7 is something of a conundrum. It has the practicality of a hatchback – and with the rear seats folded, there’s a handy 1,390 litres of load space – but it only has four seats. Despite its coupé looks and the ‘sport’ in its name, the A7 is more grand tourer than sports car. But what a grand tourer. For once, Audi has got the ride absolutely right – though I was driving a top-of-the-range version with optional air suspension, which undoubtedly had a great deal to do with that. It also had the latest generation quattro four-wheel drive, which has a 60/40 bias in favour of the rear wheels. OK, it doesn’t enjoy the pure rear-wheel-drive dynamics of a BMW, but it does pretty well, and in icy or snowy conditions, it would fare a whole lot better than the Beemer. Steering feel, which is so often lacking in Audis, is better than normal in the A7, thanks in part to the standard adaptive dynamics, which allows the driver to set certain parameters for the suspension, steering weight and throttle

response; in Dynamic mode, the A7 feels more alert than is usual in a big Audi. There’s ample punch from the 3.0-litre V6 diesel – 245 bhp – but there needs to be. Despite extensive use of aluminium in the body, this is no lightweight and its heft shows during spirited cross-country driving. Get the A7 on a smooth motorway, though, and it’s a very different story. With its standard seven-speed twin clutch automated manual gearbox (Audi calls it S tronic, VW calls it DSG), mile eating is the name of the game. As well as the compliant ride, smooth transmission and frugal engine – mpg in the mid-30s is perfectly possible without much effort, helped by the standard Stop/Start system – long-distance travel is made all the more bearable by the cabin. When it comes to car interiors, Audis are among the best. And with the A7, they’ve excelled themselves. Classy, elegant and beautifully made, the interior is a class apart. From the feel of the fixtures and fittings to the theatrical way the satnav screen emerges from the dashboard, this is a great place to be. This Audi is pretty well equipped as standard, with leather, a DAB radio, decent sound system, navigation and a power-operated boot lid all standard. But plunder the options and the price will quickly rise. The A7 is the first Audi to have a head-up display (£1,450 extra). You can also go for night vision display (£2,100), a better navigation system with 3D display (£1,175), ventilated massage front seats (£1,600) and a mega Bose stereo with a 14-speaker sound system. It sounds fantastic, but then you’d expect that for £6,000. Of course, you needn’t start at the top with the 3.0 diesel or petrol quattros (virtually identical in price at £49,790 and £49,860 IN BRIEF respectively). The entry-level point is a front drive A7 powered by a 204 bhp Car: version of the 3.0 diesel at £43,755 and, Audi A7 3.0TDI Quattro S-line in truth, it wants for little. Price: Essentially, the A7 is Audi at its best. £49,790 It’s good to drive, great to ride in and looks fantastic. It might be a niche product, but its style and panache places a large question mark over the next new Audi, due any day. That’s the A6 saloon, which shares much of its technical makeup with the A7, but none of its flair. It might be a ‘humble’ hatchback, but the A7 is the Audi to go for. n

Kate Harrison discovers how one holiday estate, Castiglion del Bosco, has given a rural Tuscan idyll a 21st century twist

I

t almost seems the Tuscan tourist’s prerogative to expect certain staples from the popular Italian region. Top of the list may be lush undulating landscapes, fragrant pasta dishes, grape vines galore, crumbling brick towers and a spectacular fresco or two. From the ripeness of the tomatoes to the reliability of the sunshine, when thinking of Tuscany, perfection comes to mind. If the Tuscan holiday scene for the well-heeled needed some unpredictability injected into its Etruscan soul, Massimo Ferragamo was the man. As son of legendary Italian shoe designer Salvatore Ferragamo, it bode well when, in 2003, Ferragamo the younger purchased an 800year old estate nestled in the slopes of the Val d’Orcia in Siena, and set about making his mark on the place.

What started as a personal quest grew almost accidentally into something more. Ferragamo had initially been seeking a property which would enable him and his friends to enjoy, separately, their own villas whilst also dabbling in the company of the group. Somewhat like a winemaker seeking terra firma for a valuable grape seed, it took him over a decade to settle on Castiglion del Bosco’s plot (or ‘CdB’ as it is fondly termed by those in-the-know). He informed friends he had found a property he considered perfect, but that rather than the original 20 friends, 200 would now be needed. Between 2003 and its opening in spring 2008, Ferragamo oversaw a lengthy restoration process culminating in 23 guest suites and a handful of luxury villas with private

heated pools and plenty of surrounding land. He threw open the doors to the public. To stay in a suite, it will cost between 450 euros and 3,000 euros per night. To buy into a villa (a sophisticated version of timeshare, or thereabouts) you will need a few million, but also the desire to fit into what CdB is all about and offers; there is a certain vetting process which aims to keep the original ‘circle of friends’ feel to the area. During a three-day break to the region, my husband and I were fortunate enough to experience the Italian high life in one of the villas. Inside, modcons (of the self-confessed ‘six star’ calibre) are married with 17th century upholstery; edifices which, in 2004, became UNESCO World Heritage Sites. A careful balance between the old and the new is achieved

marvellously at CdB by superb attention to detail inside the suites and villas which creates the perfect setting for relaxation and quiet contemplation. In the villa where we are staying, a television set is lined in leather, a bar is disguised as an old fashioned leather trunk and modern sound systems are hidden away in the walls. The interior colour scheme blends into the landscape whilst the exterior of the villa keeps to the original wherever possible. At 12 times the size of Hyde Park, Castiglion del Bosco’s land accounts for a serious mini chunk of Tuscany. Within it, ‘Il Borgo’ is a self-contained village set-up, but with 10 kilometres of land to play with, it does not feel enclosed; just convenient. A culinary academy and speciality shop, two restaurants, a fitness centre and a cigar room are

some of Il Borgo’s features. There are many advantages to a gently constructed set-up, such as feeling part of a community as and when you want, whether gathering for fresh Tuscan pastries at the toll of the afternoon bell or partaking in group cookery classes. The old vicarage has become the site of joining others for breakfast on a terrace with emotion-provoking views. Then there is the earthly pleasure of picking produce from the organic Orto garden (allotment, yes) and seeing others enjoy it that evening in the restaurant’s dishes. It would be a shame not to take a drive out into the Tuscan hills at some point, perhaps for a day trip or dinner. Siena is 45 kilometres away and Firenze is about twice the distance. But in a region which is such an international tourist hotspot, both towns can attract stifling crowds in the summer, so it is utterly refreshing to return to an exclusive stretch of land. The town of Montalcino is some 12 kilometres from CdB which is also very close on the map to Montepulciano – famed for its easy-to-drink reds. Montalcino itself is home to some of Tuscany’s most esteemed red wines: Brunello di Montalcino and Rosso di Montalcino. Wine is predictably a big deal at CdB, where a dedicated lounge enables you to relax and taste the estate’s wine. Vineyards on the estate produce different bottles owing to a rich variety of soil types and grapes and all are produced to ensure optimum quality whilst remaining true to the land. Tuscany may not immediately conjure ideas of sport and leisure (there’s far too much relaxing to be done) but there is no real foundation for such an image and CdB has plenty to offer. Fly fishing, riding, cycling, hiking, hot air

ballooning and golf are all available. On the golf course, two million pounds were spent ensuring the right colour and quality of sand filled the bunkers. As if that were not a golfing accolade enough, the course also plays host the longest hole in Europe. Sometimes at CdB it’s enough to just look. As the slowly retiring sun casts long, lazy shadows across the land, it highlights the burnt sienas, ochres, terracottas, limes and moss green hues daubed onto the landscape. Deer graze openly on the plot as nodding lavender heads beautify the land and release their hypnotic fragrance. Endless carbon copies of slender cypress trees stand in elegant poise; an instance of nature’s unnerving perfection. I reflect that you wouldn’t want too much unpredictability in Tuscany but CdB has done just enough to keep residents unwanting in their homes away from home. Castiglion del Bosco perfectly amalgamates various holiday possibilities available to us in a saturated market; privacy and community, relaxation and adventure, eating out and cooking in – all offered with effortless elegance. A world away Take the time to drive those extra miles and you’ll find yourself in the wonderful surrounds of West Charleton Grange in South Devon, a truly magical escape from the chaotic city, says Emma Mills

S

outh Devon might be a good four hour drive down the motorway, but this gorgeous area bursting with natural beauty, quaint villages, rolling hills and miles and miles of peace and quiet, offers a whole different pace and quality of life. “We always say that there’s a reason it takes a bit longer to get here, but that it’s so worth it,” laughs Hazel Bustin, who runs the luxury cottages we’re staying in with her husband John. She’s completely right, and West Charleton Grange itself provides a perfect base to explore this wonderful area. The Grange has six cottages nestled into the steep hillside with views across the valley. All the cottages are furnished to the highest standards, with plush carpets, large generously fitted kitchens, private outdoor terraces and large bedrooms. West Wing House is the star turn here, a large house with a private terrace, rustic sitting room and Victorian roll top bath. Twysden and Tickell Cottages afford some of the loveliest views, with special sunny spots in the sitting rooms, complete with floor to ceiling windows and wicker armchairs. We’re staying in Pypard Cottage a sweet two bedroom house with a large kitchen and great terrace providing views across the lawn and over to the hills beyond. The grounds at the Grange are extensive and well thought out, stepped

terraces, seating areas and a built-in barbeque space offer lovely places to sit in the sun, Wendy houses, cubby holes and climbing frames keep little ones busy for hours, while the heated indoor pool, tennis court, options for canoeing and even an onsite personal trainer means those looking to leave feeling fitter and healthier have plenty of options. You can also arrange for a personal massage therapist to do treatments in your cottages – essential weekend escapism. We arrive later than we would like on a Friday evening, and it’s a wonderful relief to finally be here. The cottage is warm and welcoming, a bottle of wine awaits us on the kitchen table, along with a pre-ordered platter of fresh seafood, and their introductory hamper of fresh fish pie, teabags, fresh coffee, milk, scones, clotted cream, jam, organic bread, eggs, bacon and sausages. We grab a cold bottle of wine and head to the terrace to catch the last rays of sunshine and take in the peace and fresh country air. Horse graze quietly in the fields opposite, we dine on lobster, fresh crab and giant prawns – and we can feel the city stress just ebbing away. After a long, indulgent sleep we rise the next morning to a beautiful day and head to the stunning indoor pool for a pre-breakfast swim, before enjoying toast, jam and coffee for breakfast in the sunshine. Then it’s a gentle walk throughout the farmland and down to

the estuary, before ending up at The Millbrook Inn in South Pool for lunch. This great little local pub has just won two major national awards - Kitchen Team and Pub Chef of the Year – and it’s not hard to see why. We grab a spot in the suntrap behind the pub while a brook gurgles gently by and, prewarned that the Millbrook specialises in fish, order Start Bay crab salad with smoked salmon, avocado and basil oil, and River Exe Moules, with garlic, thyme and white wine broth. Matched with a pint of Millbook IPA and a glass of cold of rose, the dishes are at the same time simple and exquisite. We want to stay sitting in the Millbrooks’ quiet charm all afternoon, but it’s time to head into Kingsbridge for a spot of pampering. A quick drive round the estuary and we arrive at Haven Spa and Therapy, which offers an impressive range of treatments for a small town. The other half has a soothing Hydrotherapy bath followed by a relaxing Swedish massage – both of which he says are so calming he falls asleep several times. My treatment starts off with their signature Calming Massage and Facial. My therapist Heidi is excellent at pinpointing the stress knots in my back and I can feel myself completely zoning out. The facial, as with all their treatments, uses natural Spa Find products, which utilise Dead Sea

minerals. My face feels soft and cleansed afterwards, and I am super-realxed. The following indulgent hour long pedicure finishes the effect off perfectly. That afternoon we head back to the Grange, for some peaceful downtime, before getting changed and jumping in a taxi (a black cab, the only one in Devon, a classic touch for out of towners) to The Whitehouse in nearby Chillington for dinner. This hotel and restaurant is a real hidden gem, appearing behind a wrought iron gate with fairy lights and a welcoming cobbled pathway. We start the evening relaxing in their lounge area on vast leather sofas with a glass of champagne. For dinner we enjoy onion soup with rosemary, and prawns with tomato and garlic, followed by local seabass and fillet steak. Despite having eaten nothing but fish since we got here 24 hours ago the other half declares his seabass delicious, while my local fillet steak is rich and full of flavour. Too full for desserts, we take our fabulous bottle of Rioja back to the lounge area and finish our night nattering. On Sunday, after another decadent lie-in, with the sun making us wish we were staying a third day, we have a divine breakfast of Devon bacon, sausages and local farm eggs on the terrace in the sunshine before bidding the Grange goodbye and heading for Dartmouth, a sweet costal town, a short 15 drive from the Grange on a stunning coastal road. We’re eating at renowned Mitch Tonks’ restaurant, the Seahorse, known for its seafood, and for perhaps the hundredth time this weekend, we’re not disappointed. The Seahorse is a delight inside, Parisian bistro, meets London wine bar, meets coastal cafe – mustard yellow and dark wood don’t seem a natural choice for a seafood restaurant, but here they really work. We order langoustines and grilled peppers to

start, followed by classic fish soup and Dartmouth crab – the soup is rich and tasty, while the crab and asparagus is a perfect summery dish. We both have fish again for our main course, and my local sea bass fillet with hollandaise sauce is perfect in its simplicity – bold and flavoursome, the buttery potatoes and breaded parsnips it comes with are a revelation. The other half’s Dover sole comes completely whole, and looks enormous, but he finds it fairly easy to

polish off this excellently cooked and delicate dish, the sole just melting in the mouth. We wash this fantastic food down with a deliciously light carafe of Chablis, and finish our meal with the most sumptuous rhubarb fool we’ve ever eaten. Finally it is time to go, and, as we walk through this little town, it feels hard to leave. South Devon might feel far away, but that’s just its charm. We know we’ll be back. n

Three of a Kind... Pre and post theatre

Hew Blair, chairman and buying director, of wine merchants Justerini & Brooks finds the perfect bottle for spring evenings

was at the annual UGC tasting in Bordeaux again this year, the chance for chateaux to present their latest releases to the international wine trade, and it’s safe to say that 2010 has been a fascinating vintage. While, Right Bank wines from Pomerol and St Emilion can appear daunting - with record levels of tannin, alcohol and concentration - the best wines are still a delight to taste. Estates such as Evangile, Cheval Blanc, Ausone, Tertre Roteboeuf, Vieux Chateau Certan, Conseillante, Eglise Clinet and Le Pin are all pictures of balance and elegance. Top terroirs on the Left Bank have performed magnificently as well. The extreme drought has certainly favoured cabernet sauvignon planted on deep gravelly soils. These wines possess deep colours, enormous levels of concentration, huge tannin levels and good, refreshing acidities. The ‘First Growths’ are fabulous, but there are any number of outstanding wines, many of which will outshine their 2009 counterparts. Particular mention should go to Grand Puy Lacoste, an outstanding fifth growth, which always represents super value for money. For spring time drinking, rosé continues to be ever popular, and current favourites are blends of Grenache and Syrah from the south of France. They show signs of fresh summer berries, strawberries and cream and are refined and elegant. Try Domaine Montrose 2009 (£5.97 per bottle), Chateau Rio Tor 2009 (£9.17) and new Rhone superstar, Chene Bleu 2009 (£22.17). Rieslings from Germany suit the spring too, being refreshing and well-matched with food. Try ‘trocken’ (dry) styles with fish, seafood and salad and off-dry styles like ‘Kabinett’ or ‘Spatlese’ with delicately spiced Chinese or Thai food. Braunberger Juffer, Kabinett, Trocken, Fritz Haag 2009 (£14.17) and Kiedrich Turmberg, Riesling, Trocken, Robert Weil, 2009 (£20.67) are all extremely attractive now, but will also age gracefully over the next couple of years. The lighter alcohol levels of reds from the Loire Valley offer attractive springtime drinking, and the fresh acidity and lightmedium body makes them perfect for lunch or a light supper. Try St Nicolas de Bourgueil, La Mine, Yannick Amirault, 2008 (£13.17) or Saumur Champigny, Tuffe, Château du Hureau, 2008 (£10.17). n

a unique Vintage Indian restaurant Trishna in Marylebone is really making waves with new wine evenings and tasting menus, says Emma Mills

I

have always loved a good curry, and am just as happy with the delicious, if not entirely traditional, English options of jalfrezi and tikka masala, as I am with authentic pakoras and desert curries I enjoyed while in Rajasthan. In London we benefit from a plethora of Indian dining options – with everything from the local, traditional takeaway curry, and bargain heaven on Brick Lane, to fusion in the shape of Cinnamon Club and the exceptional Michelin-starred Benares in Mayfair. Bridging the divide perfectly is Trishna in Marylbone, a smart, chic Indian restaurant with not a whiff of white tablecloths, fake flowers or hot towels; offering instead pared down brick walls painted in stunning duck egg blue, with generous, wooden tables and rustic hanging metallic lamps. There are modern chairs, smart wine glasses and bold, designer menus, coupled with warm, informative service and a smart, cultured atmosphere. This place is really special. We enjoy a glass of champagne to begin with, a delicious Pierre

MoncuitGrandCru, BlancdeBlanc with a crisp refreshing flavour. On the strength of this, we decide to try the tasting menu with accompanying wines, fairly priced at £84. Spicy popadums with a hot shrimp dip is a nice taster to kick off, before the sublime crispy squid cooked with fennel, chilli and lime. The squid is bouncy and pungent and matched perfectly with a strong 2009 Chilean Sauvignon Blanc Carmenere, Oveja Negra. This is followed by the exceptional chargrilled wild tiger prawns which arrive dripping in a hot mustard and red chilli marinade. The prawns are huge, juicy and divine. We want more. They are matched with a 2009 Austrain Grüner Veltliner ‘Singerriedl’ Federspiel, Weingut Gritsch – a unique choice, but a good one. We find out later on that the sommelier has a particular penchant for Austrain wines, with good reason. This brave, bold wine holds its own against the spicy shellfish without dominating, and adds a sweet finish to the dish. The duck seekh kebab next is surprising, and I’m not sure if the duck stands out as a unique or better flavour over the traditional lamb or beef, especially with the strong flavours of green chilli and shallots,

but it is still excellently cooked, inspirationally matched with a Lost Barrel, Oveja Negra, Chile 2009. Hariyali bream with mint and coriander, followed by guinea fowl tikka with masoor lentils, and lamb chops marinaded in kashmiri chilli, ginger and mustard mooli make up the fourth and fifth courses – all the portions expertly considered, there’s lots of food, but we’re not full yet. Onto Dorset brown crab, with pepper, garlic and butter washed down with Montagny 1er Cru, Jean‐Marc Boillot France 2008, coupled with south Indian coast lamb curry Laurona, DO Montsant, Cellers Laurona, Spain 2005. These dishes are the piece de resistance of the meal, we decide eventually, though at this point we’re nearly full but devilishly happy. The flavours have been rich, interesting and diverse, the matched wines have given each dish a new dimension, and the portions have been just right. Jools Holland Jools Holland is, quite simply, a music legend. His first single came out when he was part of Squeeze in 1974, in 1987 he formed the The Jools Holland Big Band, comprising himself and Gilson Lavis, and this has metamorphosed into the current 20-piece Jools Holland and His Rhythm & Blues Orchestra. Later...with Jools Holland is now in its 25th season and Jools was awarded an OBE for his contributions to music. Who better, then, to act as patron for the brand new Boisdale of Canary Wharf?

How did you become patron for Boisdale of Canary Wharf? I went to the old Boisdale a few times and got to know Ranald. I liked it in there – rather nice food, a nice place to go – and I thought [Boisdale of Canary Wharf ] would be a great place for musicians to come and play, and a great opportunity for a venue which could serve not just Canary Wharf but the surrounding areas of Greenwich, east London and northeast London too. It was a great idea to do it – very bold, but it’s worked.

What can we expect on the music side of the new Boisdale of Canary Wharf club? There will be various people from the world of jazz, soul and blues. There’s also a night where new artists will come in, we’ll record them and it’ll then go on jazzfm.com. When I was 16 I lived in Greenwich and I’d walk through the foot tunnel with a girlfriend, and go out on a romantic night in the old East End, to a pub called The Waterman’s Arms, with jazz and music hall music. And I played the piano in The Gun. It’s good when places are different and here, it’s a new world.

Do you think Boisdale of Canary Wharf will help make jazz more accessible? Jazz covers lots of different sorts of music, and the key to it is an element of joy – that’s what I think this place will be about.

How do live venues like Boisdale of Canary Wharf fit in with the changing notion of jazz? I hope it will do very well. I’m also delighted there’s another music venue – there are lots of artists, established and new, in the world of jazz who are not out there. London’s a huge city, a fantastic city, but there’s a handful of music venues. It’s especially great to have a new one in this part of town and a great way to introduce people to music generally.

What’s your favourite song?

Stylish hotel The Grove is opening its beautiful grounds to culture lovers this summer, to display an incredible array of sculpture

M

any will be familiar with luxury country house retreat, The Grove in Hertfordshire. Set just twenty minutes outside of London, the five star hotel has top notch facilities including a stunning restaurant, serene spa and expansive golf course. However, it is its three hundred acres of lush grounds which The Grove is most famous for. And this summer the gorgeous scenery will work as a unique outdoor gallery for sixty sculptures, as part of a new exhibition. Each of the works is inspired by The Grove itself and both figurative and abstract pieces have been commissioned from eminent and emerging artists. These contributors include graduates from the country’s best art colleges along with award-winning creatives from Australia, Holland and Spain. The curator of the exhibition is Virginia Grub who has worked on artistic projects for the past 25 years, including the selection of aesthetic displays for large corporate clients. With Sculpture at the Grove, Virginia wanted to create a destination which would allow visitors to enjoy the beautiful surroundings at their own pace and for this reason, sculptures are placed along designated routes throughout the gardens. The first walk is from the reception to a walled garden. This scenic pathway ends at the site of the estate’s fruit and vegetable patch, which dates back to 1878. Alongside avenues of walnut trees and herbs, lies a greenhouse for orchids. The space is now also the location of the outdoor swimming pool, tennis courts and an urban beach, creating a vibrant yet attractive leisure area. The sculptures visible along this route include a dramatic carrara marble cut-out by Michael Dan Archer, who reflects

the strong physicality of materials in his work. Michael’s designs are almost architectural in nature and his exhibited piece allows light to stream through, embodying the interaction between building and nature. Further along the walk is the modern outline of Cyclist, constructed by David Macilwaine out of a 12mm thick steel rod. David was inspired to produce his own installations after making suspended mobiles as centrepieces for BT. These days his works are either powder-coated to give them a colourful presence or left to rust naturally for an edgy feel. The second walk snakes through the Formal Gardens, which are quiet spaces for contemplation. Seats are set amongst rose beds and other floral displays, while there are also terraces and a water feature to enjoy. Here, Dick Budden has contributed ‘Pear with Bite’, an oversized bronzed resin copy of a half-eaten fruit. The opportunity to view Budden’s work is even more special owing to his traditional polystyrene and glass fibre techniques, which have previously rendered his pieces more suitable for private display. This exhibit has been cast in bronze to make it an indestructible form for all to witness. The final path links the restaurant, banqueting suites and the stables, with the garden and offers a beautiful stroll to the canal. Although it will be tremendously difficult for guests to select their one favourite piece, those looking to harness the style and intrigue of the event will be able to purchase any of the works. First quarter figures for 2011 reveal we have enjoyed a particularly buoyant start to the year with significant demand for high calibre rentals. This demand has coincided with a shortage of supply of quality homes in the St John’s Wood area which, whilst frustrating for prospective tenants, has been welcomed by professional landlords. Despite erratic patterns in recent years, we anticipate continued growth throughout 2011. This can be attributed predominantly to a recovery in the banking and financial sectors resulting in strong demand from corporate tenants. Though enquiries are in the main from North America and Europe, wealthy UK families (able to rent whilst undertaking refurbishments of recently purchased homes) are also a significant force at the upper echelon of the prime London rental market. Areas such as St John’s wood, Primrose Hill, Regent’s Park, Little Venice and Hampstead offer a combination of security, accessibility and a choice of over 30 private schools. Most importantly the beautiful open spaces offered here are a great attraction to families more accustomed to urban locations. Indeed, greater mobility aided by the Heathrow Express at Paddington and the recently opened Eurostar link from St Pancras Station have only served to boost demand from overseas tenants in these highly desirable residential areas. Over and above these considerations the Spring and Summer is traditionally the busiest period of the rental calendar as prospective tenants endeavour to secure homes prior to the start of the new school term in September. This year our dedicated Rental Department is already witnessing intense activity as tenants, recognising the limited supply of quality family homes, vie with one another in order to secure their ‘dream London home’ often resulting in competitive bidding. We are confident that 2011 will prove to be another successful year, not only for our landlords but for the continued growth of this area of our business.

Spring is a beautiful time of the year with lighter evenings and hopefully warmer days and it isn’t just our gardens and parks that burst into life, so does the café society on St John’s Wood’s cosmopolitan High Street. Interestingly the London property market is not quite as seasonal, but this time of the year is still the busiest period in the property calendar. Three years or so ago at the height of the financial meltdown, I am sure no estate agent would have forecast we would be trading at the levels we are today, and I am certain no one would have predicted prices would now be higher than at the so called peak of the market in the summer of 2007. This can largely be explained by continued low interest rates underpinned by an unprecedented 0.5 per cent bank base rate held again in April for the 25th consecutive month; as well as a weaker pound, the shortage of stock, and London’s rightly held position as the destination of choice for numerous overseas purchasers. Consequently, I believe we will continue to see growth in the residential market place for a while yet. Location, location, location remains as true today as it ever was and the real star of the show for me is St John’s Wood itself. The broad spectrum of properties available attracts a truly eclectic mix of residents from the world of business, media, sport and the arts. It is no surprise therefore that this unique area of North West London remains such a popular place to set up home and my passion for the area has resulted in me working here for the better part of 25 years.
