Chairman’s Remarks

GOOD EVENING, LADIES AND GENTLEMEN! Welcome to Eastwood Park Theatre, and Runway Theatre Company's 50th anniversary production - Priscilla, Queen of the Desert -The Musical. Based on the smash-hit movie, Priscilla is the heart-warming, uplifting adventure of three friends who hop aboard a battered old bus searching for love and friendship, and end up finding more than they could have ever dreamed of. With a dazzling array of outrageous costumes and a hit parade of dancefloor favourites, this wildly fresh and funny musical is a journey to the heart of fabulous!

Priscilla has been Runway's most challenging show to date. The sheer number of songs and dance routines, not to mention the logistics of getting a bus on the Eastwood stage have posed great challenges. I am indebted to our dedicated Production Team without whose input such a show would not be possible: our gifted Musical Director, David Dunlop, for achieving such a terrific sound from our talented cast; our dynamic choreographer, Greg Robertson, who has not only staged all the dance numbers, but has taken on one of the leading roles as Adam / Felicia - a massive undertaking; and, due to the indisposition of our resident Stage Manager Edward Gunn, I am extremely grateful to Tess Byrne for agreeing to take on this important role, ably assisted by Eleanor Wilkins. I am pleased that Edward has continued to be involved as Technical Advisor, and I am appreciative of his valuable input. Given the importance in this production of outlandish costumes, I am pleased to welcome June Young from That Looks Good as our Wardrobe Mistress. Gordon Fraser is one again our Front of House Manager, and Susan B Russell combines her busy role as Booking Manager with appearing on stage. I would also like to thank all those who have assisted behind the scenes with wardrobe, stage crew, Front of House, tickets, props, make up, raffle, dressers, chaperones etc, etc. It has been wonderful to have the support of many of our non-playing members offering to assist in this huge production. Our Golden Anniversary celebrations continue on Saturday 9 September when we will be holding a Dinner Dance at Oran Mor, and we hope that some of you will come along and join us then. Our traditional annual pantomime will take place back here at Eastwood from 11 - 16 December, and I am delighted to announce we will be presenting a spectacular new production of Aladdin. Advance sales are now open for group bookings and public booking opens on 1 September, so contact our Booking Manager, Susan B Russell early to avoid disappointment. Our charity for this production is the Scottish Show Business Benevolent Fund, which provides assistance to those who have entertained us over the years, and who are now in need of assistance. I would ask that you support this very worthwhile cause by making a donation in the buckets you will see as you leave the theatre. All that remains is for me to thank you, our audience, for your continued support, and I hope you enjoy our production of Priscilla - Queen of the Desert! Warmest regards

Robert Fyfe, Chairman

He is the Chairman of Runway Theatre Company and has directed their productions of Camelot, The Drowsy Chaperone, Whistle Down the Wind, A Funny Thing Happened On The Way To The Forum, Lend Me A Tenor - The Musical, Evita and Curtains, as well as many of their pantomimes.

DAVID R. DUNLOP - MUSICAL DIRECTOR David is an Honours graduate of the Royal Scottish Academy of Music and Drama, having studied percussion, teaching techniques and conducting. GREG ROBERTSON - CHOREOGRAPHER Greg has been performing in musical theatre since the age of 12, working with various groups in and around the Glasgow area. Evita with Runway marked his choreographing debut of a full musical. He has since choreographed our production of Curtains, and shows and pantomimes for Theatre Guild and Eastwood Entertainers. Greg is usually found treading the boards, his most memorable parts to date being Mike Costa in ‘A Chorus Line’, Mercedes in ‘La Cage Aux Folles’, and playing his dream role of Link in ‘Hairspray’. Greg is the resident choreographer for Musichoir Scotland. A highlight of Greg’s career to date is performing as a featured dancer in the Glasgow 2014 Commonwealth Games opening ceremony.

Between a frock... ...and a hard place!

FIVE THINGS YOU DIDN’T KNOW ABOUT PRISCILLA! Pom-pom making prisoners, melting costumes and a cross-dressing Tony Curtis: the behind-the-scenes tales from the movIe that inspired this musical! In 1993, a low-budget feature film crew drove from Sydney to Alice Springs with a truck full of sensational costumes and a pink and lavender bus now considered a fixture of Australian cinema. The film they returned with would become a worldwide smash-hit and a watershed production for the LGBT movement. Writer-director Stephan Elliott’s inimitable The Adventures of Priscilla, Queen of the Desert is a story about (as one character famously puts it) “a cock in a frock on a rock”. The film led to Academy award recognition for costume designers Tim Chappel and Lizzy Gardiner, who won Oscars in 1995 after budget restrictions turned them into the wardrobe world’s equivalent of MacGyverlike problem solvers. For example, Hugo Weaving’s famous thong dress cost $7, using materials purchased from Target - Australia’s answer to Primark! Here are five things we bet that you didn’t know about the film. Tony Curtis was originally going to play Terence Stamp’s character, Bernadette One of Hollywood legend Tony Curtis’s career-defining roles was his classic performance as a cross-dressing, on-the-run criminal opposite Jack Lemon and Marilyn Monroe in director Billy Wilder’s 1959 film Some Like It Hot. Curtis agreed to return to women’s clothes more than three decades later to play Bernadette, the zinger-delivering grump (“You sound like two fat slags at a pie bake off”). Elliott says Curtis put it to him this way: “I started my career in a dress so I might as well end it in a dress.” But, according to the director, the star was talked out of the role by his wife. Instead, Bernadette’s high-heeled shoes were filled by macho British actor, Terence Stamp, cast way against type. Other actors the film-makers pursued before casting Stamp, Guy Pearce and Hugo Weaving included Colin Firth, Tim Curry, Rupert Everett, Michael Hutchence and Jason Donovan.

The man who designed the lavender bus also created the cars in Mad Max: Fury Road The monstrous vehicles that tore apart the desert in Mad Max: Fury Road aren’t exactly available at your local car-yard – nor, of course, are fabulous rides such as the lavender-coloured gas guzzler in Priscilla. Both were the work of production designer and uber grease monkey, Colin Gibson, who along with colleague Owen Paterson, was responsible for creating the recycled school bus’ iconic look. Paterson is credited as Priscilla’s production designer and Gibson its art director, but duties were very much shared. So much so that after Paterson won an AFI Award in 1994, he literally sawed it in half and gave one chunk to Gibson. Eagle-eyed viewers can spot Gibson in the film: he plays a drunken lout who throws a beer can at Mitzi (Hugo Weaving) in the opening scene. The costumes were made with the help of Long Bay prison inmates The Priscilla trio’s performance of Finally at Lasseters casino in Alice Springs is one of the film’s show-stopping moments. In this sequence, the costumes were designed to follow the evolutionary scale: from plants to birds, lizards then people. Guy Pearce is dressed as a yellow wattle and decorated with pom-poms made from crystal organza. Around 150 pom-poms were required for the shoot but constructing them required over an hour’s work on each one. A crew member knew the craft teacher at Long Bay prison in Malabar, New South Wales, and the painstaking role of pom-pom construction was fortuitously outsourced to inmates. The jail had one proviso: prisoners were not to be supplied with scissors. The film-makers could only afford one bus – but they made full use of both sides Like most feature films, Priscilla was shot out of sequence, which meant the order of the camera shoot did not follow the chronology of the story. This posed problems, given the bus (and they could only afford one) is painted pink about 35 minutes into the running time, so it had to be one colour in some scenes and another in others. Colin Gibson solved the problem cost-effectively by painting one side pink and the other lavender. So while the bus had two colours in real life, for continuity reasons, the crew alternated which side it was filmed from. The costumes melted while being transported in a vehicle that used to be an ice cream truck On a low budget production, the challenge for producers is to be as fiscally conservative as possible (read: cut costs whenever you can). Thus, the Priscilla crew used the cheapest wardrobe trailer they could find, which happened to be an ex-ice cream truck (with an engine underneath the storage area). During production, the truck broke down near Coober Pedy in northern South Australia. It overheated and, because the costumes were constructed with hot glue, most of the outfits melted and stuck together. Tim Chappel rebuilt them again, on the fly, in a parking lot outside the Alice Springs casino. Adapted from an article by Luke Buckmaster

50 years of Fabulousness In 1966, Glasgow Airport opened, replacing a smaller airport in Renfrew. In the following year, a group of employees got together with the idea of putting on some sort of entertainment in aid of local charities. It was known that Eric Goold in the Finance Department had previous experience of Amateur Drama, having written scripts for Rutherglen Repertory Theatre, Glasgow Citizens’ Theatre and other groups. He came up with a script for an airport pantomime called Ali Babbotsinch. The show went on in the West School, Paisley on the 15th and 16th December 1967 – and Glasgow Airport Drama Club was born! Having ‘smelled the greasepaint and heard the roar of the crowd’ the cast were anxious to build on their success, and moved into the new Eastwood Theatre, Giffnock in 1973. Apart from a period when it was closed for refurbishment, we have presented a traditional pantomime every year since then. We have built up a repertoire of seven pantomimes (with book, original music and lyrics by Eric Goold) which, with a bit of updating, we rotate annually. In 1995, Eric handed over the production of our pantomimes to Robert Fyfe who had been a member of the Club since 1984, and appointed J Campbell Kerr as our Secretary. Like Robert, Campbell has a wide experience of musical theatre, and between them they have directed and produced our pantomimes since. After forty years we changed our name in 2007, and are now known as the Runway Theatre Company. This widened our appeal while still preserving our links with the airport, and enhancing the good reputation for traditional pantomimes of which we are justly proud. In 2010, the club diversified and now produces a spring musical each year. Our policy is to present new or rarely performed works. Last year we became the first theatre company to have a production broadcast on STV2. We would like to express our gratitude to all those whose dedication and hard work got us off the ground almost fifty years ago, and to those whose talent and enthusiasm have kept us flying for so many years. Thanks too, to our audiences for their loyalty and encouragement and to them we say:

WE HOPE WE’VE GIVEN YOU A LITTLE PLEASURE AND HAPPY MEMORIES YOU’LL ALWAYS TREASURE
