WELCOME TO The Running Event 2022
To my industry friends,
As we spent the better part of this year organizing The Running Event 2022, I challenged our great team with a question: How can we be more than a trade show for the running industry?
Let’s not merely provide space for connection. How do we cultivate those connections?
How do we tell the story of new and emerging brands?
Let’s not simply supply education sessions. Let’s drive thoughtful conversation and provide actionable takeaways.
Christina Henderson Event DirectorLet’s bring the stories of the 2022 Best Running Stores to life and allow these industry leaders to share their knowledge and experience.
By hosting The Running Event in Austin, how do we bring positivity and support to the Austin community?
The product of these questions is The Running Event 2022, and we’re excited to share pieces of what you can expect in Austin later this fall.
I was working on this letter when I learned of the passing of Colorado Running Company founder John O’Neill. John was opinionated and unapologetically himself — he was also always kind and supportive. He once saw me sitting alone at an industry event, and he came over and said, “Christina, you should never have to sit alone. I’m sitting here next to you.”
As I reminisce on shared times with him and with this unique, beautiful industry, I challenge everyone to do a bit extra. Let’s strive for kindness, be open to being challenged, continue to learn and grow, and lead with our values. Let’s ask ourselves, how can we do things better than before?
Invite someone you don’t know to sit with you during lunch at TRE.
The person asking a bunch of simple questions? Connect with them and share what you’ve learned over the years.
Encourage your team to visit every booth — especially those you may be unfamiliar with.
That educational session about a topic you think you’ve mastered? Go and learn even more.
Let’s hold onto and grow what makes the specialty retail industry so special. I look forward to seeing you in Austin at The Running Event 2022.
Sincerely, ChristinaMeet the Team

Switchback at TRE
The Running Event team listens to attendees’ feedback and is always working to create a more valuable experience. Here are five key initiatives you can look forward to at #TRE22.
#TRE22 Cares
This year, we’re welcoming the outdoors in with Switchback at TRE—a dedicated space in the exhibit hall showcasing outdoor brands. Offering an elevated onsite experience, Switchback at TRE enables run and outdoor specialty professionals to explore new opportunities and build strategic partnerships. Learn more on pages 12-13.
A Can’t-Miss Show Floor
The nearly full (and still-growing!) exhibit hall will be home to 275+ leading brands in the run and outdoor specialty industry. The new Starting Line pavilion will feature emerging and innovative brands making waves in the industry. The floor also includes interactive areas for connection: the Best Running Stores Gallery, New Product Showcase and Sock Bar, and Switchback Base Camp. View all current exhibitors starting on page 52.
Actionable Education
With your feedback from #TRE21 in mind, our team built an educational program focused on practical takeaways and tailored sessions for retailers and event management professionals across multiple experience levels. The education now spans the three day event with additional sessions taking place in the Training Camp Theater during trade show hours. Explore more on page 14.
The Running Event continues to work toward being a more inclusive, sustainable, and accessible event. From eliminating plastic bottles and badge holders to supporting organizations like The Lilith Foundation and Austin Justice Coalition through Strides for Progress, our goal is to make a community impact that extends beyond the walls of the Austin Convention Center. More on page 42.
New and Elevated Activities
As you explore this planner, you’ll notice new onsite events and initiatives, like 90-minute deep dive sessions, more thoughtful presentations in the Training Camp Theater, and the first annual “For Every Run Film Festival.”
We can’t wait to share what we have in store!

Conference Session Highlights
Below are just a few of the sessions you’ll find in the #TRE22 conference program.
How to Get to the Next Level in Your Store and Your Career
Store associates want to be managers and managers want to be owners. In this session, attendees will hear from store owners about what it took to get there, what owners are looking for in their best employees, and how to set goals and milestones to make specialty retail a career, not just a job.
The Low Impact Alliance Presents: Building a Sustainability Strategy
This interactive session will educate and inspire impactful action toward environmental responsibility within the specialty retail space. Attendees will access tips and resources about everyday sustainable business practices including buying more responsibly, producing sustainable marketing campaigns, and developing impactful partnerships.
Making Good Leaders Great
Specialty retailers need great leaders at all levels. To be that leader requires having a path to success and “leading up” when your title or position isn’t viewed as a leadership role. This session will share proven methods that will take attendees from being good leaders to great leaders so that everyone–the employee, the store, and the customer–wins.
How to Remove the Barrier of Entry and Build a Diverse Community
Red Rock Running Company’s definition of diversity encompasses race, ethnicity, body type, body shape, and age. In this session, Red Rock Running Company will show attendees how their diverse staff mirrors their community and the customers that come into their door. Attendees will also learn ways to include different types of diversity into staff, recruiting and hiring tips, and the importance of recognizing the barrier of entry that non-traditional athletes face.
Creative Outreach Ideas to Find New Customers Without Spending a Lot of Money
So much focus is put on high-priced advertising and marketing, but there are many inexpensive and free ideas to reach your customers. In this session, attendees will access creative ways to attract new consumers in their community and beyond that only require “sweat hours.”
Crush Your Business Goals with Improved Operations
To thrive in this economy, every store owner, leader, and staffer should be focused on one goal: repeat customers. Customers visit the first time because of your marketing and advertising; they return because of the experience. In this session, participants will hear a four-step framework to improve operations that can result in a 25%-300% increase in sales and profitability.

Learn from industry leaders as they share their experiences with implementing efforts to create
thriving environments in their retail shops, races, and across their brands. We will include actionable steps to incorporate DEI in a company’s framework to create healthy workplaces for employees and drive continued success with consumers and participants.

There’s never been more ways to engage with your customers—and channels like podcasts, video, and social media can extend your reach well beyond the store. Daring to Do Things
Differently
Allyson Felix dared to do things differently and built a brand around her values.
Together with her brother, Wes Felix, they challenged the status quo, learned that their voice has power, and realized community is the foundation of a great business. In her #TRE22 keynote address, she’ll pull you behind the curtain of the last five years of her athletic career: another Olympic Gold medal, the birth of her daughter, the founding of her company, Saysh, and a false start on her retirement. This talk will remind listeners how important it is to dream big, build differently, and keep going—even when it feels like you’re facing a giant.
MEET ALLYSON FELIXAllyson Felix reigns as the most decorated American Track & Field Olympian of all time after winning a bronze and gold medal at the 2020 Tokyo Olympics—her fifth and final Olympic games. Felix closes this chapter of her life with a mind-blowing 27 global medals at the Olympics and World Championships and titles as both a World Record Holder and a Masters World Record Holder. This year marks her last season, in which she has dedicated to fellow women athletes, especially mothers.
Felix continued to make history in Tokyo by sporting racing spikes created by her company—lifestyle brand Saysh—and becoming the first athlete to race in their own spike. Launched post-Games in June 2021, Saysh not only aims to create an encouraging and supportive community for women, but it also designs and manufactures athletic-inspired footwear made for and by women, unlike most brands, whose shoes are created based on men’s feet and footwear.
Off the track, Felix is a fierce advocate for maternity rights for all women. In 2019, she wrote an opinion piece for The New York Times, calling out her former sponsor for not providing guaranteed protections for pregnant athletes and new moms. (Felix gave birth to her daughter Camryn in 2018.) The public reaction to the piece put pregnancy discrimination in athletics in the spotlight, and the practice was heavily criticized. More female athletes came to Felix’s side, offering up their stories. During the 2020 Olympics, Felix, alongside her new sponsor Athleta, created the Power of She Fund: Child Care Grant—a fund to assist mom-athletes with childcare while competing at the games.

Members of our TRE Peer Mentorship Program will have the opportunity to connect in person at The Running Event! Mentors and mentees will have dedicated time to meet face-to-face while networking with other members of the program. Program participants will receive more details about the onsite experience soon.
Want to join the TRE Peer Mentorship Program? Scan the QR code to fill out the Partner Match Questionnaire, and our team will get to work creating a match.
The 2021 mentorship program was an incredible experience where we shared best practices and ideas on a peer-to-peer level. Our relationship was really comfortable being that it was one-on-one, and we were able to discuss topics that pertained to our individual businesses. I was a mentor, and I gained many great ideas from my mentee to bring back to my store.”

Strides for Progress at #TRE22
In partnership with Strava, The Running Event has created Strides for Progress: A Strava challenge taking place during #TRE22.
Participants can run, walk, or complete other activities to unlock donations to impactful Texas-based non-profit organizations. Scan the QR code on this page to join the TRE Run Club on Strava and stay up-to-date on challenge details.
In collaboration with the Running Industry Diversity Coalition (RIDC), we’ve selected the following organizations to support through Strides for Progress:
Stay in-the-know: SCAN to join the TRE Run Club on Strava.
To walk alongside children, youth, and families in the foster care community by offering consistent support through intentional giving, relationship building, and mentorship.
Austin Justice Coalition (AJC) is a community organization that focuses on improving the quality of life for people who are Black, Brown, and poor. Since 2015, AJC has served as a catalyst for positive change towards economic and racial equity for Austin’s people of color by developing, organizing, and providing robust programs and events.
We provide financial assistance and emotional support while building community spaces for people who need abortions in Texas—unapologetically, with compassion and conviction. Through organizing and movementbuilding, we foster a positive culture around abortion, strengthen people power, and fight for reproductive justice in and with our communities.
Texas Civil Rights Project
Engaging people and communities through face-toface public education, grassroots organizing and, action-oriented research for a cleaner and healthier Texas.
We are Texas lawyers and advocates for Texas communities, boldly serving the movement for equality and justice in and out of the courts. We envision a Texas where all communities thrive with dignity and justice, and without fear.
Advocacy Groups at The Running Event 2022
A community of corporations, nonprofits and small businesses who are committed to accelerating workplace change by creating inclusive cultures, implementing equitable systems and attracting a diversity of talent to their workplaces.
We work alongside the transformative power of nature and in partnership with youth agencies to have a positive impact on the lives of young people.
Formed in 1996 as a Colorado not-for-profit corporation, our mission is to represent, serve, and promote mountain, ultra, and trail running.
Dedicated to protecting the people and places we love by organizing runners for climate action, sustainability practices, the protection of public lands, and equitable access to nature.
Sustainable Initiatives at
Here are some of the ways The Running Event is working toward a more sustainable event.
• Eliminating carpet in the exhibit hall to significantly reduce waste
• Providing reusable Nathan water bottles to forgo single-use plastic (and donating all extras)
• Saying “goodbye” to plastic badge holders
• Utilizing multi-option garbage receptacles to make composting or recycling trash simple
• Ensuring compostable utensils and coffee cups are used throughout meals and coffee breaks
Hometown Flavor
From food to entertainment, exercise to Instagram-worthy backdrops, Austin-based running insiders give their picks for things to do and places to see while in Austin for The Running Event.
Off the Beaten Austin Path Rick Ravel, President, Karavel Shoes and #TRE22 presenter
While Ravel tabs South Congress as the downtown hotspot, those wanting a slower pace might head north about one mile from the Austin Convention Center to check out the Texas Capitol – “It’s taller than the national capitol in D.C.,” Ravel beams. – the Blanton Museum of Art, the Bullock Texas State History Museum, and the flagship University of Texas campus, which hosts the LBJ Presidential Library
The LBJ Library is one of only fifteen presidential libraries in the US.
Hit The Trails
Paul Janowitz, CEO, Mantra Labs Runners should be sure to run from downtown to Barton Springs, Janowitz says. “Hit the hike-and-bike trail for a nice trail run,” he says. “You can go out and back to the end for a 15-miler or anything in between. Then,
stop at the spring and swim in the icy cool fresh water.”
Beyond the run, Janowitz suggests checking out the Austin Bouldering Project for climbing. For food and nightlife, he lists Vespaio Ristorante on South Congress as an amazing spot for Italian and Güero’s Taco Bar, another South Congress favorite, for live music under the sky.
Eat, Drink Local Kat Rabe, Running Brand Specialist, Mizuno
Always excited to share some notable Austin spots, Rabe wastes no time touting her favorite: Gabrielas Downtown. Located about 1200 meters from the Austin Convention Center, the woman-owned eatery is known for its authentic Mexican food, margaritas, mezcal cocktails, and the 3:00 - 6:00 PM Happy Hour it hosts every weekday. At Gabrielas, Rabe suggests grabbing a margarita flight and ordering the fried queso.

More insider insight from Austin locals about what to do when in town for The Running Event
Shopping and Photo Ops
Paige Turner, Content & Communications Manager, Shokz
Turner has no shortage or recommendations for visitors to Austin. For food, she lists Paperboy for brunch, La Condesa for Mexican, and Geraldine’s for cocktails as some of her favorites. For shopping, she suggests checking out the 2nd Street District, East 7th Street, and the Seaholm District
For a fun photo opp, snap a pic in front of the “I Love You So Much” wall at Jo’s Coffee on South Congress. For nightlife,
she encourages a visit to the P6 Lounge Bar or Wax Myrtle’s Hide-A-Way
“Lastly, I recommend checking out CultureMap Austin for the most vetted, locally curated event and restaurant guides and city life information,” Turner says.
BBQ, Tex-Mex and More Ryan Hess, Co-Owner, The Loop Running Supply
Interested in checking out a prominent nonrunning specialty store in Austin? Then, it might be worth a trek to Mellow Johnny’s,
a locally owned bike shop that counts Lance Armstrong as one of its original founders and investors, says Hess. On the food front, he recommends BBQ and Tex-Mex, Austin’s most prominent cuisine styles.
For BBQ, Hess likes Terry Black’s BBQ as well as Cooper’s Old Time Pit Bar-BQue, right downtown. For Tex-Mex, Hess mentions Suerte and Comedor as well as the original Chuy’s restaurant on Barton Springs Road for a quick Tex-Mex fix.
“These are all good options when you’re in town and want to get a real taste of what Austin’s all about,” Hess says.
