efore crowds filled the floor of the Austin Convention Center at The Running Event earlier this month, Fleet Feet CEO Joey Pointer stood before a group of some 175 leaders from Fleet Feet and JackRabbit retail stores in an upstairs conference room. Pointer knew there was curiosity and even a bit of anxiety after news broke in early November that Fleet Feet would be acquiring nearly 60 JackRabbit running shops scattered across the U.S. So naturally, Pointer began his program discussing … anthropological research! Pointer shared the story of anthropology professor Margaret Mead, who, when asked about the first sign of civilization, didn’t talk about hunting tools, scribblings on a cave wall or religious artifacts, but rather a 15,000-year-old fractured femur. This particular broken bone had healed, which Mead tabbed as proof that one human had stayed and cared for their fellow traveler. Absent that altruism, Mead said, the compromised individual – unable to run from danger, find drink or hunt – would have surely died. “Imagine how many broken femurs we’ve healed,” Pointer urged the crowd.

“There are not many opportunities like this. Integration and our ability to do this well will define our success.” sudden departure of Jeff Phillips, sat down for an exclusive conversation with Running Insight on the final day of TRE and explained that he and JackRabbit CEO Bill Kirkendall had long been friendly competitors. In fact, throughout much of 2020 and into 2021, the two executives spoke regularly about landlords, staffing, guest safety and other pandemic-related challenges. Similar Challenges “Bill sat in a similar seat, so we could each understand what the other was going through,” says Pointer, who first joined Fleet Feet in 2004 as a financial manager. Through the years, the two had also casually discussed the potential of putting their companies together. It seemed an unlikely marriage until Kirkendall phoned Pointer in August 2021 to inquire about Fleet Feet’s interest in putting forth an acquisition bid. Kirkendall told Pointer that CriticalPoint Capital, the California-based venture capital firm that acquired JackRabbit in 2017, had fulfilled its vision and wanted a strategic buyer. 8

Pointer spent the next moments extracted from his family vacation in Bald Head Island, NC, talking with Fleet Feet executives and board members. For Fleet Feet, JackRabbit held undeniable appeal. With JackRabbit stores in markets such as New York City, Indianapolis and DallasFort Worth, Fleet Feet could fill in existing geographic holes and continue its ambitious march toward being a national brand. “There are not many opportunities like this,” Pointer says. Within three months, the par ties agreed to ter ms. Initially scheduled to close on December 7, a “few snags” delayed finalizing the deal for a week. By mid-December, however, Fleet Feet began the process of integrating JackRabbit stores and more than 20 JackRabbit corporate staffers into the Fleet Feet orbit. Starting the Changes Pointer says assimilation will move from the inside out, beginning with staff training on Fleet Feet elements such as fit id and store technology before concluding with branding features such as exterior signage. “Integration and our ability to do this well will define our success,” Pointer says. Clearly cognizant of the sensitivities name changes can bring, especially with established brands like Boulder Running Company and Run On! in the JackRabbit portfolio, Pointer says Fleet Feet will be “thoughtful about when and if” store names change.

“But our brand is Fleet Feet,” he also reminds. The JackRabbit acquisition serves an example of Fleet Feet’s “unapologetic” commitment to growth and its bullish attitude toward run specialty. What’s Next for Fleet Feet? “Our business is well and we’re going to continue to grow,” says the 43-year-old Pointer, a naturally competitive soul who left TRE in Austin, TX, to run in the California International Marathon on Dec. 5. “We believe in the sport and the channel as well as our upside to grow further, serving more customers with more stores and increased relevance to customers.” The company continues adding new markets and franchisees – new shops in McAllen, TX, and The Villages in Florida are on the immediate horizon – while remaining attuned to additional opportunities, including serving as an exit strategy for independent running shops. “We do want to be there and engage in those conversations about succession planning,” Pointer says. “We’re a natural buyer, but we understand we’re not the only buyer.” A ‘Complicated’ Relationship In fact, Pointer openly acknowledges Fleet Feet’s tenuous relationship with the industry, namely independent running retailers skittish of a growing corporate behemoth. He describes that relationship as “complicated,” though one that doesn’t necessarily have to be so. “I believe business can be a

Fleet Feet’s ambitions, Pointer assures, are to march ahead with a diligent focus on the company’s core values, principally community-oriented shops deeply engrained in their local markets. To that point, the name of Fleet Feet’s new legal entity – J Street 1976 – pays homage to the company’s modest beginnings that year in Sacramento and symbolizes its ongoing commitment to local retail theater. “Our foundation is community based and we will continue to operate with that in mind,” Pointer tells Running Insight. “We want to build a 100-year-old brand rooted in community-based retail and I truly believe our best days are yet to come.” n

fter almost two years of virtual meetings, Zoom calls and socially distanced greetings, the run specialty business finally gathered in one place at The Running Event 2021, held Nov. 30-Dec. 2 at the Austin Convention Center in growing but still-weird Austin, TX. Celebrating its 15th anniversary in 2021, The Running Event provided run specialty retailers and their brands with the opportunity to chart a course to the future. One of the key messages that came out of TRE was that stores are going to take the lessons learned during the pandemic, adapt them to the new retail reality and move forward. Simply put, it was good to get together again. Now, if the industry can only get those supply chain issues figured out ... A Changed Industry The run specialty business is vastly different than it was the last time it met at The Running Event 2019. Terms that are common place today – curbside pickup, virtual fittings, PPP and, yes, Zoom – were unknown back in those simpler times. But now the running boom brought about by people finding the joys and relative safety of exercise during COVID-19 has allowed the industry to thrive headed into an optimistic new year. director and publisher of Running Insight, puts it: “As we celebrate the 15th anniversary of The Running Event this year, we look forward to an even brighter future for the run specialty community that we serve.” The celebration kicked off with a keynote presentation by industry guru Parker Karnan, who said that while most projections call for 10-25 percent growth for run specialty in 2022, he definitely comes down on the higher side of the estimates. Price increases that will average eight percent will contribute to this topline growth, but the continuing running

boom – fueled by new runners who don’t necessarily consider themselves runners – will keep the momentum going well into the new year as the supply chain issues hopefully iron out by Q2. The ‘Non-Runner’ Runner The “I’m not a runner” customer was a recurrent theme throughout TRE, as most vendors focused new product development on the customer who took up running during the pandemic and plan to keep at it — not necessarily by running a marathon (or any race for that matter), but by maintaining their healthy “non-runner

As could be expected, there were many highlights to the three days of The Running Event 2021. • Attendees came to the keynote session to hear Karnan’s insights and stayed for the “The Future of Running Is Diverse” panel discussion. It featured such heavy hitters as Fleet Feet’s Joey Pointer (the self-described “white male” on the panel), Pacers Runnings’ Kathy Dalby, Britt Olson of On Running, who made the trip despite being on maternity leave, and Sasha Spencer Atwood, of the World Athletics Championships. Moderated by consultant Skot Welch of Global Bridgebuilders, the session was perhaps the most important – and, for many, uncomfortable – session ever held at TRE. The discussion focused on the need for improved diversity efforts within the run specialty industry and how these efforts demand commitment and those “uncomfortable” conversations. The fact that hundreds of people – from retailers and brands alike – attended is testament to how important the session was. Diversity continued to play a central theme during TRE as the Running Industry Diversity Coalition (RIDC) and others focused on this important initiative. • Ongoing concerns about supply chain disruptions no doubt dominated conversations between retailers and their major vendors, from footwear to accessories. The general consensus is that it is something everyone has to live with and as long as the vendors 12

are upfront with the situation – allowing retailers to plan for late or partial shipments – then all parties can cope with this challenge together. Interestingly, many of the footwear vendors included very vague release dates for early 2022 product. The typical March 1 drop date, for example, often became “Spring 2022.” One vendor even printed its catalog with explanations of which products were in limited supply or will be delayed until midto-late 2022. A sure sign of these times. • One welcome addition to TRE this year was the preponderance of official Happy Hours on the show floor starting at 4 p.m. on the first day of the exhibition. The TRE Happy Hours provided a wonderful exclamation point on a successful first day together.

• And even before that, the ice cream truck at UnTapped provided a delicious afternoon snack for hungry attendees. • TRE attendees know they have to get up early to get their daily run in, and so they did in Austin, where the streets and running paths were filled with pre-show runners at organized and informal gatherings. Highlighting the racing scene once again was the annual Indie 5K, what was billed as the “Too Fast, Too Furious” edition because it took place at the unique Circuit of The Americas venue that normally hosts the United States Grand Prix motorsports race. The other highlight was the RIDC CommUnity Run, powered by Saucony, on Wednesday morning that brought together more than 300 industry participants with

a host of Austin run clubs. It was quite an event to complement the RIDC’s efforts to educate the industry into long-overdue diversity efforts. • T he Ru n n i ng Event 2021 closed with The Best Running Stores celebration. Highlighting the evening was the announcement of Charlotte Running Company as the 2021 Store of the Year. Also receiving special recognition were the three other finalists for the prestigious annual award — Fleet Feet Montclair, John’s Run/ Walk and Run Hub Northwest. (See page 37 for more on the Best Running Stores.) • The Best Running Stores evening also featured the presentation of five sponsored industry awards given to well-deserving individuals and stores for efforts that went above and beyond normal retailing in a very challenging year. Here’s a recap of t he winners: • Brooks Run Happy Award: Chelsea Kipp, Mill City Running • Saucony Run for Good Award: Bull City Running • Skechers Performance Miles of Comfort Award: Run Detroit • Impact Award from On: Palmetto Running Company • And finally, the most emotional award of the evening – the Ubuntu Award, presented by Balega – went to Bert and Tanya Pictor, the retiring founders of Balega who actually established the award years ago. It was a deserving and heartfelt tribute to two very deserving individuals. n

ith a sprint to the finish, Running Insight senior writer Daniel P. Smith accomplished his ambitious feat at the 2021 edition of The Running Event. In one 45-minute session, Smith shared 101 of the smartest, savviest and sharpest ideas he has seen America’s run shops implement to ignite their respective brands and drive results. Women Who Workout and Wine is a lively, wine-filled fundraising affair hosted by Montana’s Bozeman Running Co. The event features a running fashion show, a bachelor auction and live auctions from the best of Bozeman’s small businesses.


RunAbout Sports’ High Performance Distance Academy is an overnight camp for middle school and high school runners at Virginia Tech. The camp features daily runs and professional speakers on topics such as nutrition and sports psychology. The camp also includes exposure to cross-training activities such as yoga, Pilates and spin.


Dick Pond Athletics’ Team Bucks program directs a pre-tax percentage of each team athlete’s purchase back to their school’s crosscountry or track program in the form of a Dick Pond gift card


Whirlaway Spor ts’ annual Captains’ Night assembles captains from local

high school cross-country teams together for a pre-season night of motivation and camaraderie. The event includes guest speakers and quirky contests designed to inspire leadership and teamwork.


The shoe-tying clinics at RC Outfitters in Peoria, IL, teach youngsters how to knot their laces.


The Healdsburg Running Company’s always-popular three-day, two-night camps combine trail running, travel, fitness education and dynamic culinary experiences in northern California’s wine country.


The Ultra Running Company’s Runners Select Program is a monthly subscription service with four tiered levels ranging from $60-115 per month. The programs include free footwear, customized training programs, complimentary race registrations, member-exclusive gear and early access to sales and events.


Fleet Feet Hartford’s a mbitious We Run WEHA Challenge ventured to run all 230 miles of West Hartford’s streets over the course of 2021. The store’s weekly email provided participants a 4-5 mile “route of the week” that included some route-specific factoids.


Ridgefield Running Company and its sister store in Darien introduced the 5K Passport Challenge in Summer 2020. Participants could run, walk or hike 12 unique 5K courses across two Connecticut counties. Individuals or households who completed their passport earned a personalized wood medallion.


The $50 “Mystery Box – Anything But the Shoes” available at Snail’s Pace is packed with assorted running goodies, such as performance socks, water bottles, nutrition, sunglasses, A Snail’s Pace-branded gear and store gift cards.

SHOE SHOW The best from the shoe brands was on display at TRE21. / By Cregg Weinmann


here is a revival of sorts, the rebirth that happens each spring, or in this case what is coming for Spring 2022. The running industry feels it and after the long winter under a cloud, returning to in-person meeting adds to the optimism that the activity of running brings to a day. Such was the case among the footwear brands at The Running Event 2021 in Austin, TX, earlier this month. Seeing long-time friends on both the retailer and brand sides of the aisle was a return to normalcy — though there were some not in attendance due to the unpredictable nature of the current pandemic situation. The 20-month suspension of personal contact did not, however, diminish the industrious production that is seen between seasons and the results were in evidence at TRE, although confirmation of release dates was hard to come by due to supply chain uncertainties. Looking across the brands there was much to digest, but here is one writer’s take on what will matter for run specialty retailers as they ponder their shoe walls in Spring 2022 and beyond.

fit of Boa. The amalgamation should prove to be a great combination. Brooks Running Brooks gets a new trail makeover, though it’s not just a wash, cut and style (so to speak). It is more along the lines of a multiple transplant. Trail, by its nature (wait, it is nature) opened the door to taller stack heights and the brand shows a marked change because of it. The use of DNA Flash, Brooks’ name for its supercritical derived foam, has freshened its trail shoes as well as its mainline shoes this season, just like it did with its performance oriented models the Hyperion Racer and the Hyperion Tempo. The brand continues to

build comfort and refined touches into its shoes, one reason for its leading attitude in the specialty channel. Craft Craft is very intentional about its product line and the focus has not wavered from its well-executed apparel to the recent extension into footwear. The introduction in an opening round, plated racer, caught some by surprise. Its new trail offering validates this commitment and execution, allowing Craft to drop onto the shoe wall with a full collection. Diadora The Italian brand has a long and storied history, with connections to World

Athletics president Seb Coe’s successful early track career. The brand’s return to performance running for the U.S. market looks promising, thanks to a dose of Italian designed and manufactured running product in the new Atomo, with tall stack heights and impressive attention to detail. Though similar to some competitors in appearance, its shoes will make an Italianstyle splash on many run specialty shoe walls. La Sportiva Trail focused, the new product plays to the brand’s strength without gimmicks or extra baggage. The Cyklon Cross features a Gore-Tex gaiter, Boa closure and lowprofile, sticky Frixion rubber for high level trail performance in bad weather, or worse. At $225 per pair, buyers need to be as committed to mountain performance as is La Sportiva.

New Balance The brand has continued to progress, with new foams, established styles and its always-impressive athlete sponsorships. The Running Event was a gateway to a new season, with new technologies, features and solutions to make runners of every stripe happy. Updates to many of the best sellers in the New Balance line had intentional, wellthought improvements, while a few new styles round out the collections. Puma The Cat has been busy this past year and the running category has taken notice, i n pa r t because of new endorsers such as Olympic medalist Molly

Seidel. The line-up of shoes is worthy of the attention, because they perform. For the new season, the women’s-only XX (appropriately named for the two female XX chromosomes) addresses some of the unique characteristics of the female foot and should attract attention when they appear on the shoe wall. The bigger story is its family of performance-oriented plated shoes and the Fast-R Nitro Elite, a shoe with a heel pod that aligns the foot to the forefoot plate to maximize performance. Not only is it the most wellrounded running line in recent Puma history, but its polish is well received and the credibility should have a lasting effect.

Reebok Reebok performance running has become a credible brand again. A plated racing shoe that is designed to compete well against the field, a running shoe made from natural materials features components and foams that place them on a level playing field with their performance running counterparts — for the first time in a long while. So what’s the downside? Reebok’s recent sale hopefully will not prove to be its slide to mediocrity. Saucony Performance running has been a focus for decades at Saucony and the latest version of its running shoes keeps the momentum going. The trio of top-end

Endorphin shoes, initially developed with a very similar look, will now feature a better range of functions as well as differentiation to signal their use. A broader line will also bolster the top end, with continued performance in road, trail and track each providing its own following. Skechers Skechers has shown a penchant for converting doubters and skeptics who wonder if such a fashion, street brand can make a good performance running shoe. Well, it can. History: Run Hub opened in May of 2015 on Eugene Marathon weekend and there is one location. Owners Kris and Dustin Pearce moved to Oregon in 2012 after living in Missouri and while Dustin had worked part-time in two running shops in Missouri, there was no intention to open a running store in Eugene. After a couple of years a need for something different began to surface and Run Hub was born in the spring of 2015. In Their Words: “Run Hub feels like a hub for the walking and running community in Eugene,” says store manager Lillie Schrock. “We strive to know the names of everyone who walks in our doors. We remember their favorite shoes, what race they’re training for or what injury they’re overcoming. Making sure someone finds the right product, be it a pair of shoes, hydration vest or apparel, is more important to us than making the sale.” Macie Gale, apparel buyer and merchandiser, echoes those thoughts. “Run Hub is unique in the sense that it is fundamentally centered around the community,” Gale says. “Our reach extends to the medical field, everyday walkers and runners, gym goers, retired gardeners and the functional style-seekers and our approach to everyone is as unique as their specific purposes and preferences. More importantly, Run Hub stands on a pillar of strong ethics, embracing diversity and empathetically approaching every person who enters our building and influence.” “Our staff is passionate about providing excellent customer service and meeting the customer where they’re at,” adds operations manager Lauren Moe. “Whether it’s a customer with wide feet looking for a comfortable shoe to wear all day or a regular runner wanting to upgrade their footwear, we go the extra mile to find a solution to the customer’s problem. Gale concurs: “Receiving this award is humbling. We work hard every day, investing in our customers and community with our time and knowledge and it’s an honor to be recognized for this. Leading is more about giving power to others than harboring it. Run Hub does this by enabling its customers to understand products and own their personal experience to better themselves. Jeanice Croy, Kevin Croy and Maggie Croy-Schuck started with one goal in mind — to build a locally owned running store in northeast Indiana that provided an inclusive fitness environment. They knew that based on national surveys and publications the city of Fort Wayne has had the reputation of being one of the unhealthier cities in the United States. From the first day Fleet Feet Fort Wayne set out to change all that by developing numerous training programs and events that specifically focused on the beginning runner or walker. In Their Words: “Our store is unique and has become a sort of gathering place for the community and for anyone trying to improve their lifestyle. Whether it is overcoming an injury or wanting to receive guidance in getting back in shape, Fleet Feet Fort Wayne has been the community’s first source of reference. We almost feel that we have become the ‘Starbucks for Fitness.’ This was especially true when we were forced to close for a few months in the early months of the pandemic. “Our staff stepped in to help bring some comfort and ease the pain of the pandemic. We organized numerous virtual activities to help take people’s mind off of the crisis. Like RunGo, a free running bingo like challenge/contest that people could do from home. Other virtual activities and challenges included The Everest Challenge (running as a team, participants had to run the distance of the height of Mount Everest) and The Kiss The Bricks Challenge, where each team had to Run 500 miles collectively within a certain time period while maintaining social distance. Jeremy had years of community involvement from a career in the operations at the YMCA and the American Red Cross in Youth Programming and eventually management at Fleet Feet Chicago. Leah’s involvement with Fleet Feet began more than 20 years ago as a volunteer and active member of her local running community. At the time there was hardly a running community in Roanoke, but over the past 18 years Fleet Feet Roanoke has helped to build a booming running and walking community. Eleven locations in Massachusetts • Key Personnel: Colin Peddie, President History: Marathon Sports was founded in 1975 in a renovated first floor apartment near Harvard Square in Cambridge, MA. In 1992, Colin Peddie took the reins of the one-store operation 55

In Their Words: “The most unique thing that we do is to help spread the sport of running at the scholastic age. We partner very closely with the Massachusetts State Track and Coaches Association, which puts on most of the XC and track meets in the state, and a few years ago we teamed up to brainstorm how we can get high school kids and their parents more engaged with the sport and was formed in 2016. Our live streams of top meets can get upwards of 16,000 views. Opened Darien Running in July, 2020 — it not only opened during COVID, but it has also withstood two hurricane floods this year. In Their Words: “Our community involvement makes us unique. In 2021, we saw an employee give 75 percent of her liver to a customer, after nearly 100 of our runners went to get tested. Our summer programming from kid’s programs to adults is a huge hit. This year our races returned and the give back to charities was the biggest yet because our community knows how much non-profits rely on us. RRC/DRC donated shoes and gear to an impoverished school that launched their firstever XC team. Most of these kids did not even know about the sport previously. “We bring traditional, old-school customer service with next level technology to assist the customer. Our stores are 100 percent iPad mobile, making the transaction happen at the foot stool. We no longer print receipts — everything is emailed.” What the Award Means to Them: “Receiving this award means everything to the team. He was a competitive runner in high school and had a track scholarship to Southern Illinois University, but after a career-ending injury he started coaching at Methuen High School and opened the running specialty store when he graduated. In Their Words: “Our store is unique because it sits on 17 acres of land, which also has Whirlaway Golf Driving Range — the oldest family-owned golf driving range in the country (established 1931 now 90-years old). Our 16,000-square-foot building houses the golf pro shop on the first floor along with Al’s Breakfast Diner. Whirlaway Sports Center is on the second floor and has more than1000 skus of footwear that includes wrestling, soccer, baseball, football, volleyball, tennis, cross training and cheerleading.” What the Award Means to Them: “It’s a great testament to our staff. There is no better feeling than getting a compliment on a staff member. To bring everyone back and to receive this award is extra special.”

In Their Words: “We are stitched in deeply with our community. Not only do we coach kids and adults year-round, but we also put on three 5K races per year and host two group runs and two yoga classes every week. The store partners with the local park district to co-host Global Running Day in June and a legit high school cross-country race in November.” What the Award Means to Them: “To receive the Best Running Store Award in consecutive years has meant the world to us. In a bizarre period of time where many of us felt isolated personally and professionally, earning this recognition from our customer base and our peers has been a tremendous lift and a reaffirmation of the importance of the work we do with each and every person who enters our store.” n
