Despite the macroeconomic headwinds that have faced U.S. consumers this year, as the run specialty industry convenes in San Antonio, TX, this month for The Running Event 2025 retail demand has held up — unit sales across the general merchandise and CPG industries that Circana tracks are flat through September, compared to the same period last year. Higher average selling prices are leading to a slight dollar growth of two percent.
Some of this average price increase is due to continued inflation, but some of it is due to a mix shift towards higherpriced brands and products.
The theme of 2025 has been that consumers are spending more on what really matters to them and are pulling back or trading down in lower priority areas. Beauty, toys and video games have been standouts, driven by a desire for innovation, emotional connection and interest in health and wellness. The industry performance of footwear, apparel and accessories has lagged overall, but categories that tap into those elements have been bright spots.
One of these bright spots has been running footwear. Overall unit and dollar sales of adult footwear are flat in 2025 through August, but sales of adult running shoes are outperforming on both metrics — up four percent in units sold that, combined with a four percent increase in average selling price, is driving eight percent growth in dollars, according to Circana’s Consumer Tracking Service.
As we head into 2026 – and as the industry gathers in Texas for the most important three days on the run specialty

calendar each year – running footwear brands and retailers will be tasked with keeping up this pace.
To that end, here are three areas of opportunity.
1. Emphasize the running category’s premium proposition.
Consumers have been splurging for premium-priced footwear brands and items. In the first half of 2025, the average selling price for the top 100-unit share gaining items was more than 50 percent higher than the market average, according to Circana’s Retail Tracking Service.
In the adult running category, the average selling price grew four percent through August, on top of 10 percent growth last year, and most of this is led by a mix shift to higher priced products.
Innovation is also key — year-to-date, 15 percent of units sold was generated by new items launched in 2025, a percentage that has been steadily increasing over the past three years. This newness has helped to create continued excitement for the running category, providing value for runners and casual consumers alike and justifying a higher price point.

Despite the challenging business conditions, the industry must continue to focus on bringing innovation to the consumer and giving them a reason to buy. Those that hang back will fall behind.
2. Expand your audience and connect with your consumers.
According to the Sports and Fitness Industry Association’s recently released 2025 First Half Game Plan sports participation report, running/jogging is the top activity that consumers under 35-years-old intend to pursue, whereas those over 35 plan to focus more on weight training.
Circana’s Consumer Tracking data confirms that over the past 12 months, two-thirds of the growth in adult running shoe sales has stemmed from wearers under 35-years old. Brands and retailers will need to embrace a younger consumer while continuing to meet the needs of the more mature ones. This means knowing
how and where to “speak” to your consumer.
According to Circana’s latest Future of Footwear survey, 65 percent of consumers ages 18-plus use social media to learn about footwear brands and retailers. For those ages 18-34, that figure jumps up to more than 85 percent.
Just over 40 percent of adult consumers have purchased footwear as a result of seeing it on a social media platform — and for those ages 18-34, it’s just over 60 percent.
And social media doesn’t only drive online sales. More than 40 percent of those that made a purchase after seeing it on social media did so in a physical store. This is a key shopping behavior for running retailers to understand. From online to in-store, social media can work for you, not against you.
Consumers ages 35-plus generate the remaining onethird of running category growth. These consumers rely
less on social media and as their attention shifts towards other activities such as weight training, retailers should adapt product and marketing strategies — perhaps highlighting items such as recovery footwear for everyday comfort and post-workout use.
3. Maximize key selling periods.
Historically, running footwear has not gotten a lot of buzz during the holiday season. But in the past few years that has changed as the category has been among the top performing footwear segments during this time period.
In addition, the 2025 backto-school season was strong for running footwear sales as well, with dollars growing 14 percent from June through August 2025, versus last year, based on Circana’s Consumer Tracking data.
While races and running event timing dictate the demand cycles for serious runners, occasional runners

and consumers looking to wear running shoes for casual use may be more influenced to purchase during the times when they are more accustomed to opening their wallets.
There are many opportunities throughout the year to give consumers a reason to buy for themselves and for others. Retailers should capitalize on moments like seasonal transitions, holidays and lifestyle events – such as Mother’s and Father’s Day, summer vacations and year-end holidays – to drive sales.

As The Running Event 2025 takes place in San Antonio, here are five vital questions run retailers need to ask before bringing in a new footwear brand. / By Danny Smith
Run specialty retailers attending The Running Event 2025 (TRE) this month in San Antonio, TX, will see a flurry of interesting footwear brands on the show floor. From established performance running brands to upstart entities in the recovery footwear game to outdoor and lifestyle players with assorted offerings, more than five dozen footwear-peddling brands are slated to exhibit at TRE 2025.
With footwear obviously the most prominent product category in run specialty shops, it’s only natural footwear brands attract outsized attention. While retailers will undoubtedly see compelling options and partners worthy of serious investigation at TRE, bringing a new footwear brand into the shop is rarely a simple, straightforward act. Any such decision demands critical reflection and analysis.
“It’s important to be thoughtful and that’s because we, like all run shops, have limited resources, whether it’s open-to-buy dollars, inventory space or storytelling capacity,” Eric Contreras, the owner of three Runners Plus stores in Dayton, OH, tells Running Insight.
So, what are key questions run specialty store leaders should ask before bringing a new footwear brand into their store?
1. What’s the local customer demand?
While customer requests are not the “end all be all” to Terra Running Company owner Brittany Katz, inquiries from customers about specific brands or models push a brand’s footwear onto her radar. In fact, mounting queries about Topo spurred Katz to evaluate the brand and eventually bring select Topo models

into her Cleveland, TN-based running store.
“When we get a lot of requests, then we try to talk the rep, see the line and learn more, including investigating who else carries the brand in our market,” Katz says. “We always want to give customers the option to buy from us.”
Ditto for Contreras at Runners Plus.
“If we get customers asking us for a brand without our prompting, that tells us there’s something we need to explore more,” he says.
2. What’s the brand’s trajectory?
Running retailers want footwear brands moving in a positive direction with enthusiasm, energy and focus. Before bringing in any new footwear brand, Contreras
assesses the brand’s trajectory by examining where it’s been over the last two years, where it is today and where it’s going, something he ascertains through conversations with brand reps and peers as well as studying market research.
“I’m building a more complete picture and forecast from a few different sources about where the brand is going,” Contreras says.
Also interested in gauging a brand’s momentum, Tim Waz, owner of Grounded Running in Beaufort, SC, probes the company’s business and product strategy. He doesn’t want to see a brand chasing trends. He appreciates commitment, discipline and focus.
“I remember Brooks’ move to GuideRails as their support mechanism,”

TRE 2025 will feature more than 50 footwear brands peddling new models, including (from top to bottom): Topo’s Specter 3 is engineered for speed and distance (MSRP: $170); The Overdrive ST from OTIVM pairs cushioning with a dual-foam system (MSRP: $200); La Sportiva’s Prodigio 2 blends soft cushioning with energetic rebound and a breathable, high-tenacity mesh upper for a secure fit (MSRP: $170); and Norda’s 001A features a Arnitel TPEE midsole for an enhanced fit, feel and energy return to offer stable mechanical properties in a variety of conditions (MSRP: $295).
he says. “They laid out a clear and concise path of how they were moving forward, and that gave confidence in the brand.”
3. How does the brand differentiate itself?
Today might be the golden age of performance running footwear, as more brands are producing innovative and enticing options than ever before. As such, differentiation matters. How is a brand distinguishing itself from the competition? Contreras needs answers there before bringing a new footwear brand into Runners Plus.
“We need a story that will resonate and cut through the noise,” he says. “Is it truly unique product or something easily replicated?”
A few upstart footwear brands, in particular, are sharing their stories with added verve and intent. Hylo Athletics, for instance, promotes sustainability, while Mount to Coast champions longevity.
4. What hole does the brand and its models fill on the wall?
Waz calls the shoe wall “an ever-changing kaleidoscope.” It’s not designed to be static, but evolving — and constantly so. Since opening in 2016, Waz has dropped brands and brought them back, most recently Mizuno, while also adding niche brands like Mount to Coast.
But before he ever inks a deal with a new footwear brand, Waz critically evaluates the brand’s models to determine where they fit on his shoe wall.
“Whether it’s a walking shoe or a super shoe, it has to be different than what we already have on the shoe wall. It has to fill a hole for us,” Waz says. “Sixty percent of our customers are non-runners, so do they have wide sizes and truly supportive models?”
At Terra Running Company, Katz similarly prioritizes differentiation from her existing footwear lineup. What separates the brand, its story and its footwear models from current options on the shoe wall?
“We don’t need another midlevel neutral shoe,” Katz says.
5. What’s the partnership look like going forward?
As much as Waz wants compelling models on Grounded Running’s shoe wall, he also desires “brands who show up for our store and our community” just as much. He asks questions about how the brand supports its retail partners with marketing assets, staff training, demo runs and more. He evaluates the responsiveness of the brand and its local sales rep.
“Those things carry a lot of weight with us,” he says. “At the end of the day, we want brands who align with our store, our customers and our community.”
Katz also seeks open, collaborative partners and likes to see competitive terms, including support with returns, warranty issues and payment terms.
“I understand that can be a tough ask, but it’s helpful for us as a one-door store,” she says. “I’m not much interested in bringing in a new brand if the terms and customer service are not up to par.” n

Follow your heart to San Antonio for a great TRE 2025. / By
Tom Griffen
As you embark on your San Antonio Running Event 2025 experience this month, I’d like to share an approach strategy that’s certain to prove your show attendance worthwhile. Allow me to illustrate this with a brief anecdote.
It’s been a long time since I spent consecutive weeks on the floor with customers. I’ve fit folks sporadically while working onsite with clients. But not since I operated a store of my own have I churned through flurries of patrons from open to close, navigating countless cases of plantar fasciitis and toe-bending bunions, while delivering advice on injury-free running, good walking form and how to train for a 100 miler without compromising the viability your domestic partnership.
can relate to this being a relatively common outcome when we’re doing what we’re here to do.
In more than two decades in the run specialty industry, I’ve learned that the best business strategies are those built on a relentless foundation of love. That’s right, I said it, LOVE. Which means we actively extend ourselves
this love in action. And even if caring comes naturally, it’s the hardest thing we do. Which is why it behooves us to make sure there’s as much care and love being given as there is being received. Making this a reality is a daily choice.

Earlier this fall I worked a longterm training stint with a running store in Northern California. When my arrival unexpectedly coincided with a sudden change in personnel, I pivoted to help fill crucial gaps on the schedule. And though my intentions to train were mostly thwarted, the situation turned fortuitous. The team’s collective energy ticked upward and customers were feeling it. Like, really feeling it.
Days became flooded with customers profusely thanking us for spending quality time with them. For really seeing them. For leaning in and listening intently to their unique needs. I wasn’t the only recipient of multiple customer hugs and I, for one, took none of them for granted. Surely you
for the purpose of nourishing folks’ growth. Love is what we do.
Whether it’s our own growth or someone else’s – a staffer’s, customer’s or anyone else’s – we spend our days committed to a collective uplift. We insist on things being better. We deliver hope. We focus on the illumination of our shared humanness. We never lose sight of the fact that shoes and socks and insoles and whatever, though all imperative to our professional plight, take second billing to the most appealing and consequential piece of the puzzle.
Our business, when done right, revolves around love. And the care we deliver from minute to minute – the seeing and listening and compassionate and thoughtful togetherness – is
I challenge you at this year’s TRE experience to keep love and care at the forefront. Talk numbers, sure, but don’t neglect the softer, emotional piece that inspires those numbers to swing upward. Talk fit process, too, and all the other objective machinations of running a successful run specialty business. But make sure the impactful nuances of authentic connection and care are discussed with, at the very least, equal weight. Because otherwise you’re missing the point. You’re probably also compromising your business.
A powerful question to ask coworkers, fellow retailers, vendors and professional partners might be something like: How can we add more love to what we do? How can we care more? Folks may giggle a bit at first — and that’s OK. They may even feel a little uncomfortable. That’s fine, too. Love needs our help to get a bigger seat at the table.
So, at this year’s annual gathering of the run retail family, break through the norms of conference chatter and soften things up a bit. Invite in care. Tell folks you love them and see what happens. And when someone tells you the same, maybe go in for that hug. That’s what we’re all about, after all. n
