’Zozo girls unstoppable against Quemado By Todd Fuqua Sports Editor todd@ruidosofreepress.com CARRIZOZO – The Carrizozo volleyball team didn’t have to break much of a sweat in Friday’s District 4B match against Quemado on their home floor. The Lady Grizzlies won in straight sets – 25-6, 25-5, 25-9 to further solidify their spot as the best team in District 4B – not to mention their claim as the best team in all of Class B. It was the first time they’d taken to the court since a sweep at Reserve last Tuesday. “I think our kids came into this match today with a good focus, trying to really sharpen up and get ready to move forward into the district tournament,” said Carrizozo coach Pam Allen. “These Carrizozo kids play a very good brand of volleyball, and they’re just having a hoot.” The Lady Grizzlies contin-

Carrizozo’s Kaitlyn Pearson (12) and Shayna Gallacher look to block a hit by Quemado’s Kate Eberle, Friday, during a District 4B match at Carrizozo. ued their dominance of district opponents with a 25-9, 25-6, 25-9 victory over Reserve on Saturday. With that victory, they

finished 5-1 in the bi-district standings with Animas, and a playoff match today in Las Cruces will determine who hosts

this weekend’s district championship. On Friday, Carrizozo (16-3, 4-0 District 4B) wasn’t perfect. There were a few times the Lady Eagles (8-9, 2-2) were able to get a kill from Emily Ferranti or take advantage of a Lady Grizzly miscue – but those moments were few. All of the Carrizozo players were on their game Friday, as Andrea Vigil turned in a stellar performance at the net with six kills to lead her team. Sarah Ferguson also had a great day up front, while Erica Vega proved why she’s probably one of the best liberos in the state. “We are a better team when she’s back there playing defense,” Allen said of Vega’s play. “She’s a spectacular libero.” As valuable as Vega is to Allen’s team, the junior didn’t make the trip to Reserve last Tuesday due to illness.

That illness claimed a lot of Lady Grizzlies, and Allen had to play a lot of younger players in that match. Those same young players – Cirsten Barela, Lexi Zamorea, Kristie Gallacher, Janae Willingham and Kaitlyn Pearson – got some floor time on Friday as well, but it came in the third game when the Lady Grizzlies had a 13-2 stranglehold of a lead following a 8-0 run with Fantasia Dennis at the serve. “Hopefully, you learn to play well when you’re young and get better as you mature,” Allen said of the competitiveness shown by her middle school and underclassmen players. Serving is what really made the difference Friday, according to Allen. “We had a great day from the service line,” Allen said. “We missed maybe one serve in three games. That’s really outstanding.”

Capitan almost turns the corner at Mescalero By Todd Fuqua Sports Editor todd@ruidosofreepress.com MESCALERO – Anyone who’s followed the Capitan volleyball team this season might not find their District 7-1A result at Mescalero surprising. The Lady Tigers lost in three games in the regular-season finale of a difficult season, but the scores of each game – like the scores of their threegame sweep at home against Hagerman on Tuesday – were close, 2515, 25-21, 25-21. It was a combina-

tion of Capitan (1-18, 0-6 district) finally starting to play to coach Rebecca Gonzales’ expectations, and the Lady Chiefs not playing their best ball. “This week, we’ve made bigger strides than what we have all season long,” Gonzales said. “Before it was small improvements, but tonight they stepped up to the level of play that we know we can. But even with that, it’s still not quite there.” Thursday was senior night for Mescalero (7-12, 2-4), and coach Julie Rocha decided to get her 12th

graders a lot of playing time to start the match. “We weren’t playing our normal lineup to start, just our seniors, but we were still able to get it done,” Rocha said. “They had a little more confidence against Capitan tonight.” The Lady Tigers didn’t quite get things going in the first game, spotting Mescalero a 6-1 lead to start before falling 25-15, but they started the second frame with a tenacity that led to an 8-all tie. The Lady Chiefs were then able to engineer a 6-1

run thanks to a few Capitan miscues, but Capitan didn’t bow out easily. The Lady Tigers got to within two points at 20-18 on a pair of blocks by Torri Trapp, but couldn’t get any closer. Game three was an even better one for Capitan. Mescalero took

an initial 7-3 lead before Lady Tiger Kayla Padilla took the serve and guided her squad to an 11-8 advantage. The Lady Chiefs regained the lead on four straight service points from Alexis Guydelkon, but Capitan was always within striking range and

tied it at 20-all on a strong kill by Trapp. Mescalero got to match-point serve, but a kill by Cheyenne Eldridge kept the Lady Tigers alive and gave Capitan the serve. Mescalero was finally able to end it on a Lady Tiger miscue in the next volley.

Mescalero football finishes with a win By Todd Fuqua Sports Editor todd@ruidosofreepress.com The Mescalero football team was able to bookend their season with victories following a 58-13 decision over Cloudcroft in Friday’s District 3-1A finale. The Chiefs (2-7, 1-2 district) won with their bigger and more experienced line, setting up the Mescalero running offense. “We have big kids up front,” said Mescalero coach Godfrey Cordova. “When we can control the line, we can run the ball, and that’s just what we did.” Cordova said it was much more than just controlling the line. The Chiefs also played with a great deal of confidence all night long. “They were relaxed and had a good time,” Cordova said. “Part of their prob-

lem this season is that they had been nervous all year long. We never had any big plays, but we got steady runs throughout. ‘We also limited our mistakes,” he added. “This was one of the few games were we didn’t lose fumbles in the backfield.” The Chiefs had a season with only two wins but lots of experience. Cordova said how much that experience benefits the program is up to how dedicated the athletes are in the offseason. “It depends on how much leadership we can get out of the kids that are coming back,” Cordova said. “The things we accomplished this season should have been accomplished in the spring and summer. But they’re great kids, and I want to thank the fans, administration and the tribe for all they did for us this year.”
