Physical Inactivity & Obesity
About 65 % of Americans age 20 and older are overweight or obese. Data from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention show that only 30.1% of American adults engage in light-moderate physical activity for at least 30 minutes on five or more days a week. If you are overweight, losing even 5 to 10 pounds will help lower your blood pressure and cholesterol and improve your overall health.

Physical activity will build endurance, control blood pressure, reduce cholesterol levels, help with weight loss, and reduce your risk for developing diabetes. The key is finding activities that fit your lifestyle and abilities.
The American Heart Association/American Stroke Association recommend 30 minutes a day 5 to 7 days per week. This can be broken up into three 10 minute brisk walks during the day! Ideal body weight is determined by calculating your Body Mass Index (BMI). Your nurse or dietitian can assist you in calculating your BMI during your stay.
The ideal BMI is 20 – 25.
