WELCOME

We are delighted you are considering Rugby School Japan for your child and our aim is to make the application process as clear for you as possible. This brochure covers all the key areas including our admissions Process for entry as a boarding or day student and how to apply from abroad.

The School will open in August 2023, with applications being accepted into years 7, 8, 9, 10 and 12. Applications will also be accepted for entry into the School in August 2024 and 2025.

Places within each year group will be strictly limited each year. The School will accept rolling applications throughout the school year and early applications are encouraged, particularly as the School reserves the right to close applications to certain year groups once they become full. Waiting lists will then be utilised where year groups are full.

Applications will be processed in three stages

Phase 1 - September 2022 to December 2022

Successful applicants will be offered places from October 2022 until January 2023

Phase 2 - January 2023 to March 2023

How to apply

1. Register your interest in applying for a place

Any parent that wishes their daughter or son to be considered for a place at Rugby School Japan will in the first instance need to register their interest via the Open Apply online portal.

2. Attend an information session

We recommend that the first thing you should do is to arrange a suitable date for an in-person or online session with the Founding Principal to judge whether Rugby School Japan may be the best school for your child.

The School will hold a large number of regular small group information sessions for prospective parents from late September 2022 onwards, in Tokyo and other cities in Japan, and also overseas. (Need to explain how to book these sessions) For parents outside of the Tokyo area that cannot make an in-person meeting, online sessions will also be available.

3. Complete an online application form

Once you are clear that Rugby School Japan is your choice, then the next step is to complete and return the registration form and payment of the application fee, stating clearly whether you wish to apply for a full boarding, weekly boarding or day place.

The formal application process will open in late September 2022 via the Open Apply portal.

4. Assessment of your child

Once an application is received, applicants will be assessed in numeracy, literacy, verbal reasoning and other specific subjects as required. All assessments will be conducted in English and held where possible at Phoenix House School, Tokyo. Overseas applicants, and any applicants that cannot attend in-person will be asked to complete the assessments in their current school.

The School will also request a copy of recent report cards, which should cover at least two years preceding the date of application. Consideration will also be given to any formal public examination results, and a confidential reference will also be required and requested directly from the child’s current or last school.

An interview to establish your child’s broader interests and character will also take place to assess their non-academic potential. Before the interview takes place a questionnaire will be sent to your son or daughter, asking them about their interests. We are looking for academic ability and potential, co-curricular interests and enthusiasms and the necessary resilience to be part of a boarding school environment – even as a day student. Parents must fully understand and accept the educational philosophy of the School and its commitment to a holistic and broad boarding and day education, and all parents of applicants will need to discuss any application for their son and daughter with the Principal before Rugby School Japan will make an offer of a place.

Please see the age guidelines below to ensure that you are applying for the correct year group for your child.
