Skill Level Rating We evaluate the skill level required for your enjoyment on a Ruby Range Adventure tour by assessing a combination of different factors. We take into consideration the technical skill level of the route, the tempo of the trip in regards to the length of each day, the isolation and the expected weather conditions. By looking at all these factors we rate our adventures in the following way: BEGINNER

Never even sat in a canoe before? No problem! Our open programs always start off with an instructional component designed to teach you the skills necessary for safe wilderness travel. A background in camping and paddling is an asset but not necessary. These programs are open to expert and novice paddlers alike. You will appreciate the experienced teaching skills of our patient guides

Best suited for those with a basic level of wilderness travel. You have been on a few camping trips before and have played around in a canoe or kayak. You should know how to keep a canoe in a straight line and have the stamina to paddle for several hours and carry your personal bag.

Not for novice paddlers. Trips rated as experienced are major expeditions. These trips are usually in remote locations where weather is unpredictable. Your paddling skills are at an intermediate level, you can handle your canoe or kayak in most weather conditions and have basic whitewater skills. Above all you have the right attitude, one of cooperation and flexibility.

Hiking Skill Level Rating

Moderate hikes with light day pack, courses and activities are suitable for beginners and include necessary equipment and safety gear.

All campgrounds during this hiking vacation are accessible by car. Backpacking is not necessary. For the daily hikes you carry only your lunch, rain gear, camera etc.

Backpacking is necessary. Gear and equipment will be split between participants. Each backpack will weigh 10-25kg. Bushwhacking, cross country boulderhopping, easy scrambling, some snow.

20 days guided canoe tour on the Yukon River Skill Level: Beginner

This classic canoe trip down the Yukon from Whitehorse to Dawson Cityis tailored for visitors who like to travel far away from tourist routes, following the trail of history. Special canoeing skills are not required. The tour starts in Whitehorse on the Yukon River with the compass needle set north, and we pass many relicts of the historic gold rush of 1898. The expedition travels over 700 kilometres on this mighty river, exploring several abandoned settlements such as Fort Selkirk, Hootalinqua and Big Salmon Village. Camps are set up on the gravel and sand banks of the mighty river where one can enjoy a refreshing dip in the Yukon. Black bears are quite common in the Yukon valley and are often seen by our guests. Watch the ridges of the cliffs along the river to spot the busy mammal. Moose are numerous in the forested foothills, and bald eagles nest along the riverbanks. Beavers are busy getting their winter supplies in, and several times we have seen grizzly bears strolling along the shoreline. The only major interruption to the rivers smooth journey is the mighty Five Finger Rapids, once a major navigation problem for the large paddle wheelers. Around the campfire we will hear about the solution found for this problem and some interesting stories about the first river travellers. At the confluence of the Yukon and Klondike rivers we find the settlement of Dawson City, the famous gold rush town of the Yukon. We stay two days in Dawson, relax in a fine hotel and relive the history of the gold rush with tales of Jack London and Robert Service.

Trip Itinerary “The Classic - Lake Laberge to Dawson City” Day 1: Arrive in Whitehorse Arrival Whitehorse. Transfer to your downtown hotel. This afternoon, you’ll meet your guide and your fellow travellers, and have a chance to pick-up any last minute supplies. Evening free for optional sightseeing and touring. Overnight accommodation in Whitehorse. Day 2-17: Whitehorse / Yukon River. The adventure begins! Your canoe trip starts on the legendary Yukon River. During the next two weeks, we’ll paddle along this wonderful wilderness river passing old trading posts, modern off the grid cabins, and relics of the Gold Rush. The put-in is located at the confluence of the Takhini River and the Yukon River. After just a few minutes on the river, we’ll leave our busy life and civilization behind us. We’ll soon reach Lake Laberge, made famous by Gold Rush poet, Robert Service, in his epic poem, the Cremation of Sam McGee. Service famously changed the name of the lake to “LaBarge” to rhyme with the line “on the marge”. We’ll follow that shoreline of the lake before we reach a stretch of the Yukon River known as the 30 Mile near Hootalinqua, a former trading post and RNWMP station. The 30 Mile current moves fairly quickly and is a prime location for fishing for Arctic grayling or northern pike. This section of the Yukon River is relatively narrow, so the chances of wildlife sightings including black bears and moose at close range, are quite good. We’ll soon pass by the confluences of the Teslin and Big Salmon Rivers and on day 08, we’ll arrive in the First Nations (native) community of Carmacks. The town was originally established by George Carmack, one of the original discoverers of gold at Dawson City. Shortly after Carmacks we’ll reach the famous Five Finger Rapids, one of only two rapids on the entire route (together with the Rink Rapids) and the only real hazard to river boats travelling to Dawson during the Gold Rush. Four large boulders in the river create a series of ‘standing’ waves, but by now, with your paddling techniques honed, you’ll tackle the obstacle without problems. Following the rapids, the river valley widens and high bluffs border the river for long distances. We’ll pass the confluences of several creeks, streams and rivers including the Pelly, White and Stewart Rivers, and encounter several gravel bars and larger islands, which make perfect campsites, as they are flat, open and generally free of bears. One such island is the former Hudson Bay trading post, Fort Selkirk. A territorial park, Fort Selkirk is one of the best preserved examples of old time Yukon. Several of the original buildings have been restored, and a few are being used by people from the Selkirk First Nation. On Day 17 we’ll reach Dawson City! Located at the confluence of the Yukon and Klondike Rivers, Dawson City is a welcome sight after more than 10 days on the river without seeing a town or village. The afternoon is at leisure and tonight we’ll kick our heels “Klondike” style, just like the gold rushers of 1898! (Day 17 overnight accommodation in Dawson City.) Day 18: Dawson City Today, we’ll tour the city including the cabins of Jack London and Robert Service and the Dawson City Museum. Then we’ll travel out to Bonanza Creek where gold was first discovered in 1896, to visit the Discovery Claim and see the impressive Dredge #4 National Historic Site. You will even have a chance to pan for gold yourself and keep all you can find! On the way back to town, we’ll stop in at the Midnight Dome, to enjoy a magnificent view over the city and the Yukon and Klondike River valleys. In the evening we’ll visit Diamond Tooth Gertie’s casino for an evening of Can-Can dancing, gambling and lots of good fun! Overnight accommodation in Dawson City. Day 19: Dawson City - Whitehorse Today we’ll return to Whitehorse by tour van via the Klondike Highway. The driving time is considerably quicker than the trip by river. We’ll stop at a few scenic locations along the highway, including the incredible Five Finger Rapids overlook. Overnight accommodation in Whitehorse. Day 20. Departure Whitehorse Transfer to the airport. End of tour services or join your next tour program.

Our canoe trip starts with a transfer to the legendary Yukon River. The river’s name means “great river” and thus it is very well named. It travels more than 3000km from its source lakes south of Whitehorse, to the Bering Sea. During the next seven wonderful days, we’ll paddle over 300km on this great river to roam the Yukon wilderness. Our first day of paddling brings us to Lake Laberge, which requires some shoreline paddling. The reward is some wonderful paddling along the 30 Mile section of the river, a narrow, winding stretch that provides some great scenery, good fishing, and brings us to some interesting historical sites including the old trading post of Hootalinqua and RNWMP outpost. As we continue along, we’ll reach the confluences of the Teslin and Big Salmon Rivers; wildlife, including black bears and moose, is often spotted along the shorelines.

DAY 8: ARRIVE CARMACKS

After a week on the river, with very few signs of civilization, we arrive at the small native village of Carmacks, which was founded by Klondike Goldrush co-discoverer, George Carmack. You’ll have time to grab the first meal not-prepared by yourself in more than a week, before saying goodbye to your canoe adventure on the river. This classic canoe trip down the Yukon from Carmacks to Dawson City is specially tailored for visitors who like to travel far away from tourist routes, following the trail of history. Special canoeing skills are not required. The tour starts in Carmacks on the Yukon River with the compass needle set north, and we pass many relicts of the historic gold rush of 1898. Trip Itinerary “The Classic - Carmacks to Dawson City” Day 1: Arrival Whitehorse Individual arrival at the Whitehorse Airport. You will be met by your driver and depart immediately to Carmacks via the Klondike Highway. Your guide will review the route for the next 13 days and outline your camp responsibilities over a hearty dinner beside the campfire this evening. Day 2 - 10: Yukon River Canoe Tour Our campground is located right beside the Yukon River so it is a quick trip to the put in. We’ll break camp and get an early start. Not far from Carmacks, we encounter the famous Five Finger Rapids. One of only two real rapids on the entire Yukon River system, Five Finger is in reality four large boulders in the river, creating some standing waves. A good test, on your first day, but the guide will review the important information prior to going through the rapids and your fellow travellers, who paddled the river from Whitehorse, will have some good paddling techniques by now. As we pass through the rapids the valley widens and the river begins to flatten out. We’ll pass by several large bluffs as the river meanders its way in a north-westerly direction. Black bears, particularly in the early part of summer, are easy to spot as they dig for roots and forage for new growth on exposed south facing slopes. Further on, we’ll pass by the confluences of the Pelly River before we arrive at historic Fort Selkirk. The oldest European “settlement” in the Yukon, Fort Selkirk was established as a fur trading post by Robert Campbell of the Hudson Bay Company in 1848. The original fort was actually razed by coastal Tlingit traders who historically held a trading monopoly with inland native bands. The post was re-established in the late 1800’s as gold rush traffic increased and quickly became known for its riverside hospitality, roughly half way between Whitehorse and Dawson City. Today, Fort Selkirk is a Yukon Territorial Historic Site, and is home to a few residents from the local Selkirk First Nation. Days 10 and 11: Dawson City Today we’ll reach Dawson City, home of the 1898 Klondike Gold Rush. When gold was discovered in 1896, more than 50,000 people arrived at Dawson City making it the largest city west of Winnipeg and north of Seattle. We’ll pull out of the right on Front Street, directly across from the Klondike River, which gave the region its name. This evening, we’ll “hit the town” just like the Klondike Gold Rushers of more than a century ago. First up, we’ll visit the historic Diamond Tooth Gerties Casino. This lively casino offers all the usual games, including Texas Hold-em Poker, and a raucous Can-Can floor show. The next day, we’ll tour the town and visit all the important historic sites, including the SS Keno, Palace Grand Theatre, the Commissioners Residence, and the cabins of Jack London and Robert Service. We’ll then travel out to the Bonanza Creek goldfields to the site of the original discovery, and the famous Dredge #4 National Historic Site. Perhaps surprisingly, we’ll pass by several working gold mines, put back into circulation as the price of gold has risen dramatically the past few years. We’ll have a go at gold panning ourselves before returning back to town. Our last stop of the day will be at the Midnight Dome overlook, which provides a great view of Dawson City and both the Klondike and Yukon River valleys, and gives you a sense as to the vastness of the territory you paddled through the past few days. (two night’s accommodation in Dawson City.) Day 12: Dawson City - Whitehorse Depart to Whitehorse on the Klondike Highway. We’ll stop in at pleasant Moose Creek Lodge for a coffee break this morning, and shortly after crossing the Stewart River, the highway generally follows the Yukon River Valley. As we near Carmacks, we begin to see the mighty river. Just outside Carmacks, we get a great view of Five Finger Rapids, and our guides will often plan a picnic lunch at the overlook in good weather. Trip Itinerary “Explore Secret Water ways” Day 1: Arrival Whitehorse You will be met at the Whitehorse Airport and transfer to the hotel. You will have then given time to discover the town and do some shopping. This evening you will meet your fellow paddlers and we discuss the trip itinerary. (Overnight accommodation in Whitehorse) Day 2: Whitehorse – Mayo From Whitehorse we travel north with our van on the Klondike Highway passing the Five Finger Rapids on the Yukon River. In the afternoon we pack up the float plane to fly to Clarke Lakes. Here we camp on the lake shore and enjoy our first camp fire. Day 3 - 6: Beaver River / Clarke Lakes Today we put in on the shore of Clarke Lakes for the start of our canoe trip. We will travel towards the Beaver River over connecting brooks. We find our way through a chain of small lakes with each of these inviting us to stay a while. Reed covered banks and the occasionally branch let us improve our navigational skills. This area is prime moose habitat so keep an eye out! Around us breathtaking mountains rise over the spruce forest with wild and wonderful camps awaiting our group on the lake and river shores. Soon we join the Beaver River and the water will pick up speed. This faster water has assorted obstacles requiring some skillful manoeuvring of the canoes. After the small brooks and lakes, it is now the breadth of the landscape that is fascinating. Here fishing is easily rewarded and our dinner often becomes a backcountry gourmet experience.

Day 07 - 13: Stewart River The Stewart River, the small brother of the Yukon River, welcomes us with a playful, fast-flowing current. Here we can enjoy rafting up to float with the current in places to enjoy the high, rugged mountain scenery. Again and again there are interesting trapper cabins or an abandoned homestead’s on the river bank to discover. As more water arrives from small creeks the river swells further as we approach Baggins Canyon. Here two sets of rapids (Class II and III) modify the river’s character. Your guide will pull out at various points to scout the river, select routes or choosing to porDAYe or line through sections. Taking this time to view the main rapids from above we often carry our gear around allowing us to enjoy playing the rapids and pick up the gear afterwards. Shortly after the rapids we get to Fraser Falls where we will porDAYe around with our gear and canoes before continuing down river.

15 days guided canoe tour on the Big Salmon River Skill Level: Intermediate

The 315 kilometre tour (includes about 100 km on the Yukon River) through the solitude of the Big Salmon River is our favourite canoe adventure and it is especially suitable for the intermediate canoeist. Our well-trained guides introduce the participants to the proper paddle techniques on this class I-II river. The start of the trip is Quiet Lake on the South Canal Road, from where the Big Salmon winds its way through the Salmon Mountains towards the confluence with the Yukon River. Wildlife encounters along the river are quite common, and one can expect to see moose, caribou, wolf and eagle. During August and September, thousands of salmon spawn in the Big Salmon, and grizzly bears are often seen. In the evenings we will set up camp along the riverbanks or on gravel bars. Meals are cooked on the open camp fire, and fresh Arctic grayling, lake trout, salmon and northern pike may be added to the menu. Hiking trips into the mountains and creek valleys can round out an exciting river journey. The canoe tour ends in Carmacks on the Yukon River, from where we take our van back to Whitehorse

You’ll have some time to explore the city before meeting your fellow travellers and your guide at the group meeting this afternoon. Following the tour, you’ll have some time for some last minute shopping and sightseeing. Overnight in Whitehorse. Day 2: Transfer Whitehorse - Quiet Lake We’ll depart Whitehorse southbound on the historic Alaska Highway, completed in under a year in 1942 to aid the Pacific Front during WWII. We’ll travel to Johnson’s Crossing before turning north on the Canol Road. The “Canol” was also built during the war, to aid in the construction of an oil pipeline from Norman Wells, just across the Northwest Territories border. “Boneyards” of WWII era vehicles can be found at various points along the roadsides. More striking though is the wonderful scenery, particularly as we approach Quiet Lake. There, we’ll unload the canoes and set up camp for the night. Overnight: Quiet Lake Campground Day 3 – 14: Big Salmon River Canoe Tour Begins! This morning we’ll break camp, load the canoes and depart. The first leg of the journey takes us down Quiet Lake and Big Salmon Lake; the headwaters for the Big Salmon River.

The Big Salmon is a narrow, swift moving river (up to class II) that requires some technical paddling. The guide will offer some training in camp, and after the first of the rapids, you’ll be an expert in no time! One of our favourite Yukon rivers, the Big Salmon offers a thrilling wilderness paddle for even the most experienced canoeist as there is something new to discover around every bend in the river. Day 14: Carmacks - Whitehorse The last leg of our tour is on the famous Yukon River. We’ll arrive in the native village of Carmacks after two weeks in the Yukon backcountry. Our transfer van will be waiting for us at the pullout, and will take us back to Whitehorse along the Klondike Highway. We’ll stop in at Braeburn Lodge on the way back to town for some home baking. The lodge is famous for its massive cinnamon buns. Whitehorse feels like a metropolis after two weeks on the river and the hot shower and soft bed will be welcome. You’ll enjoy reminiscing about your adventures over a great dinner with your new friends this evening. Overnight in a hotel in Whitehorse.

Day 5: After only a short while on the Bonnet Plume River we will encounter the first class II-III current in the Rockslide Canyon. Day 6: The river presents itself with a pleasant and steady current with the occasional chute – some to be run, some to be scouted first. Day 7: Today we continue on through some rock gardens with boulders to watch out for. Day 8: After the first days of excitement on the river, today offers a welcomed relaxing paddle on a substantially braided river to the next camp. Day 9: Once again you will get the opportunity to show off your paddling skills as you paddle through another canyon calling for some demanding maneuvers. After the canyon, the river flows with steady class II-III whitewater and bigger waves. Day 10: Today will provide some time to soak in all the unforgettable moments on the river over the past few days as we take a break from paddling and go on a day-hike to one of the surrounding peaks (6 hours return). Day 11: The river presents some easier currents today, so we’ll take the time to enjoy the wildlife, the scenery and possibly go on an other hike. Day 12: Today’s paddle will bring us to Fairchild Creek; a particularly beautiful part of the Bonnet Plume River. Day 13: As the river continues throughout broader valleys we’ll hike to Fairchild Lake today (four hours return) and also have the chance to visit a remote hunting outfitter’s camp. Day 14: Even though we are leaving the whitewater of the river behind, the current is still strong as we head towards the Peel River basin. Day 15: Today we will explore the Peel Canyon as we join the Peel River. Day 16: We will encounter the last class two whitewater before we leave the canyon. Day 17: Our final day on the river will impress you with the shear beauty of this magical landscape as we make our way towards our last camp. Day 18: At ”Taco” Bar, the float plane will pick us up and we’ll fly over the vast expanse of northerm Yukon back to Mayo. Once in Mayo, we’ll drive back to Whitehorse. Overnight in a hotel. Day 19: This morning you will have time to explore the capital of the Yukon, Whitehorse. Maybe you want to do some shopping or simply enjoy the many attractions this city has to offer. The Wind River is renowned for its remote beauty, hiking and whitewater for the intermediate canoeist. The headwaters of the Wind are only accessible by float plane, and the legendary Beaver or Otter aircraft takes us through the spectacular Bonnet Plume Range of the northern Yukon into McClusky Lake. Here we are about to start a challenging journey down this clear and narrow river. With alpine campsites alongside the river, easy hikes, many panoramic vistas are guaranteed. Seeing grizzly, wolf, dall sheep, caribou, and moose are all possibilities. The river is mostly a Class I/II river, characterized by riffles, tight corners and the occasional powerful eddy. As such, it is best suited to paddlers who have had river experience and are comfortable with river paddling strokes. The surrounding ridges are ideal for hiking. A few layover days have been scheduled to take advanDAYe of the scenic vistas that these ridges offer. The wild country that the Wind courses, is home to sheep, goats, caribou, elk, beaver, wolf, eagles, falcons and more. It would be surprising if a number of these were not encountered during the paddle. At the Peel River we will be met by our floatplane and returned to Mayo. This flight will give us an excellent view of the Wind River

Trip Itinerary “The Heart of the Yukon” Day 1: Arrival Whitehorse Arrival in Whitehorse. Transfer to your downtown hotel. This afternoon you’ll have the chance to meet your fellow travellers and your group leader will review the itinerary and your gear. Later this afternoon you’ll have time to pick up any last minute items identified, and tour the Yukon’s capital. Quaint and compact, you’ll enjoy the cafes, galleries, museums and shops of Whitehorse’s Main Street and downtown core. Accommodation: Whitehorse hotel Day 2: Whitehorse - Mayo - Wind River Tour departure. We’ll travel by comfortable maxi-van northbound along the pleasant Klondike Highway. Shortly after departing we’ll stop for a coffee at Braeburn Lodge, famous for its massive cinnamon buns, then continue onto Carmacks, which was first established as a roadhouse by George Carmack, one of the co-discovers of the gold near Dawson City, that sparked a rush of more than 50,000 on 1898. Further along, we’ll stop at the Five Finger Rapids overlook, one of the most scenic viewpoints along the Yukon River valley. Four giant boulders mid- stream, create five distinct channels or “fingers”. The rapids are one of the only real navigational hazards along the Yukon River between Whitehorse and Dawson. After passing through both Pelly and Stewart Crossing, we’ll turn west on the Silver Trail – named for the massive silver deposits in the area, and the world’s largest silver mines - for the short journey into Mayo. There, we’ll transfer our equipment to a floatplane for the short transfer over the stunning mountain ranges forming the Peel River Watershed to McClusky Lake, the headwaters of the Wind River. Accommodation: tent camp Day 2 to Day 20: Canoeing the Wind River Valley A comfortable paddle with little white water, the Wind River is a journey through truly wild land. Heavily wooded shorelines give way to alpine mountains shrouding granite peaks of up to 5000-6000 feet (1850m – 2000m). Wildlife sightings are common, including moose, as well as caribou, black and grizzly bears, and possibly even wolves. Our first campsite will be in the vicinity of Bond Creek, which offers several excellent hikes to sub-alpine valleys offering dramatic views of the valley.

Your time on the river will settle into a familiar daily routine. Daytimes will be spent enjoying classic swift water canoeing as the river meanders through spectacular mountain scenery. Each evening, we’ll make camp in a pleasant sheltered location along the shore or on a gravel bar in the river. Following a hearty dinner your guide will often lead the group on an easy hike to a scenic location above the river, or recounting the day’s adventures around the campfire. Throughout the tour your guide will regale you with stories of the unique history of the Wind River and Peel Watershed, from Hudson Bay explorers to the group of Klondike Gold Rushers who wintered on the river en route to the Klondike Gold Rush, and the infamous RNWMP Lost Patrol, whose ill-fated expedition resulted in their deaths. Corporal Dempster, who recovered the bodies, and for whom the Dempster Highway is named, who recovered the bodies, started his search for the missing men on the Wind.

Each bend in the river offers a new view and a new impression of this wonderful wilderness region. Near the Bear River confluence, Royal Mountain rises regally above the surrounding slopes. Farther downstream, at the confluence with the Little Wind River, the river flattens out as we leave the Illtyd Range and enter a broader valley. Mount Deception soon comes into view at Hungry Creek.

We’ll soon encounter the impressive Peel River, and further along we’ll pass the junction with the Bonnet Plume and Snake Rivers. Entering a short canyon, we will haul out our canoes on a small gravel island known as named Taco Bar. The waters here are deep enough to allow a float plane to land on the river. A short, but spectacular float plan ride brings up back to Mayo, and a very welcome hot shower, a meal prepared by someone else, and a soft hotel bed. Accommodation: Mayo hotel

11 days / 10 nights guided canoe tour on the Teslin River Skill Level: Beginner

The 370 kilometre tour (includes about 170 km on the Yukon River) through the solitude of the Teslin River is one of our favourite canoe adventures and it is especially suitable for the novice canoeist. Our well-trained guides introduce the participants to the proper paddle techniques on this class I-II river. The start of the trip is at Johnsons Crossing on the Alaska Highway, where the Teslin River winds its way through the mountains of the Southern Yukon towards the confluence with the Yukon River. Wildlife encounters along the river are quite common, and one can expect to see moose, caribou, wolf and eagle. During August and September, thousands of salmon spawn in the Teslin River, and grizzly bears are often seen. In the evenings we will set up camp along the riverbanks or on gravel bars. Meals are cooked on the open camp fire, and fresh Arctic grayling, salmon and northern pike may be added to the menu. Hiking trips into the mountains and creek valleys can round out an exciting river journey. The tour ends in Carmacks on the Yukon River where we will part from our canoes and travel with our van via the Klondike Highway back towards Whitehorse.

Trip Itinerary “Spirit of the Yukon” Day 1: Arrival Whitehorse Transfer from Whitehorse Airport to your downtown hotel via city highlights including the SS Klondike, Old Log Church, and Log Cabin Skyscraper. At your group meeting this afternoon, you’ll meet your fellow tour participants and your guide will review the itinerary. Time for optional tours, shopping and sightseeing this evening. Overnight in a hotel in Whitehorse. Day 2: Whitehorse - Teslin River We’ll depart Whitehorse southbound on the historic Alaska Highway, completed in under a year in 1942 to aid the Pacific front during WWII. We’ll travel to Johnson’s Crossing. We’ll unload our gear and canoes, load-up, and put in on the river. The Teslin offers a relaxing paddle along a wide, fast moving, deep river. A short paddle brings us to our first campsite. Days 3 to 10: Teslin River We’ll spend the next week on this scenic, gentle, fast-moving river. All tolled, we’ll travel more than 350km through the spectacular southern Yukon. Moose are often spotted along the shorelines, or even swimming the river to access better food sources on mid-channel islands or the opposite shoreline. Black bears enjoy the grasses and roots of the exposed south facing slopes, and their dark coats stand out nicely against the sandy soil. Just north of Lake Laberge, the made famous by Gold Rush poet, Robert Service, in his poem the Cremation of Sam McGee, the Teslin flows into the Yukon River near the former trading post of Hootalinqua. A gold rush era paddlewheeler can be found rotting away on the shoreline nearby, recalling the headier days, when the Yukon was the most exciting place to be in the North American West. After gold was discovered near Dawson City in 1898, more than 50,000 people paddled the Yukon River and its tributaries. In fact, it was these same gold seekers who gave the Teslin River its contemporary name. The First Nation (natives) people living on the banks of the river called it the Déslin Chú, which became Teslin. Yukon’s gold rush history is frequently evidenced during our tour as we pass by old cabins and trading posts, some of which are now inhabited by contemporary pioneer families living a simple off the grid lifestyle. Day 10: Carmacks - Whitehorse IOur tour ends in the native village of Carmacks, which was first established during the Klondike Goldrush by one of the original discovers of gold at Dawson City, George Carmacks. The town of just 450 residents appears a metropolis after a week on the river! Our river trip ends here; and you will return to Whitehorse in a comfortable maxi-van where a warm shower, cold beer and a comfortable bed awaits! Overnight in a hotel in Whitehorse. Step back in time and rediscover a Hudson Bay trading route while paddling the historic and mesmerizing Pelly River. This guided canoe journey will take you back to the uncharted Northwest of the 1840â&#x20AC;&#x2122;s where the fur-trade was driven to reach the outer-most corners of Canada. One of the most famous pioneers of that time, Robert Campbell, was the first to explore the Pelly River. He and his voyageurs traveled the Pelly River in search of new outposts to trade with local natives. A half-century before the Klondike Gold Rush would change the face of the Yukon it was the pioneer spirit of Hudson Bay and Northwest Company explorers like Robert Campbell who first connected the North to the rest of the world. Whether you are a novice or a experienced river paddler, you will truly enjoy this 10 day canoe-camping adventure which leads along the breathtaking Tintina Trench into the heart of the Yukon Plateau. The Trench is a major pathway for migratory birds and many species can be seen later in the summer along with other wildlife such as Dall and fanin sheep, muskrat, beaver, fox, wolf, bear, eagle and trumpeter swan can be easily spotted along the riversides. The Pelly is a relatively wide river with good current, quite often we can stow away the paddles, raft up and relax for a while. And, every so often we will encounter sections of the river which require a bit of maneuvering on three easily negotiable rapids (class I-III).

Day 3-6: Paddling Nisutlin River The next morning we will break camp, load the canoes and start our canoe trip. Over the next four days we will cover approximately 130 kms paddling down the Nisutlin River. With the Yukon’s summer days there is endless daylight and no hurry on the river. Enjoy evenings fishing, playing campfire games, making S’mores and learning about the unique northern environment you’re travelling through. Trip Itinerary “Stampeders Route” Day 1: ArrivAL Whitehorse We’ll greet you at the airport and transfer you to the hotel in downtown Whitehorse. The rest of the day is at your leisure. There are many interesting things to discover in Whitehorse; you can visit the longest wooden fish-ladder in the world, the Beringia Centre for a glimpse of pre-historic Yukon and Alaska, the nearby Yukon Transportation Museum and MacBride’s Museum of the Yukon. We also highly recommend a visit to the SS Klondike National Historic Site, a restored sternwheeler located next to the Yukon River. Or if you’d like to travel by boat yourself, you can take the MV Schwatka tour through the very scenic Miles Canyon.

During the Klondike Goldrush of 1898, some 30,000 gold seekers arrived in Skagway by steamship, ready to travel the 1000kms to the gold fields at Dawson City. Today, the town is bustling with visitors and still retains its gold rush flavour. The quaint streets of Skagway are perfect for strolling. After visiting the historic town, we’ll travel 16kms to Dyea, where we’ll start our hike on the Chilkoot Trail. Today we’ll hike to Finnegan’s Point (approx. 3 hours hiking time). day 2: Finnegan’s Point Today’s short transfer by road to Skagway will be memorable. The Klondike Highway is known as one of the most beautiful two hour trips in North America! Stunning mountain views are found around every corner. We’ll meet you at your hotel and depart to the historic gold rush village of Carcross (shortened from Caribou Crossing) and the travel over the White Pass to Skagway. At Fraser, you have the opportunity to take the historic White Pass & Yukon Route Railroad (optional, recommended) from Fraser to Skagway. Now a UNESCO International Civil Engineering Landmark, the White Pass Railroad was built in 1899 to assist in the transport of goods and people to the gold fields at Dawson City. The narrow gauge railroad takes a circuitous route from 1200m to sea level in just 30km!

River. Spruce trees tower above the trail and house eagle nests and the occasional black bear. Spawning salmon can be seen in the river in late summer. Yet, signs of the Klondike Gold Rush are also evident; from remnants of the old telephone line, built in 1898 to connect Skagway with Bennett and Log Cabin and the 1950’s era logging road that forms the trail near our campsite. Finnegan’s Point is named for a fellow who built a bridge and for a short time collected a toll from passersby. The thousands of miners soon over-ran the bridge and his efforts to hold them back were futile. You’ll end your day in view of the beautiful Irene Glacier across the river. day 3: Pleasant Camp After breakfast we’ll continue our adventure through the rain forest. There are lots of creek crossings, as we follow the banks of the Taiya River. This is a pleasant day with some easy and some fairly steep, but thankfully, short climbs. The Rock Garden is a pleasant meadow with few trees and lots of small boulders, rolled to the side of the trail for easier walking. A little further ahead, we’ll reach Canyon City. Once a thriving town servicing the thousands of miners on their way to Dawson, all that remains today are the foundations of a few buildings, a stove and some pots and pans, and the old boiler that powered the tramway. In 1898 you could save a lot of time and effort by using the tramway to get your goods over the pass for 7.5 cents/pound…or $5 in today’s money! Continuing on, we’ll encounter “Bent Tree”; miners would often mark a trail by tying a loop in a young sapling that would usually die as a result. This one has defied the odds by continuing to grow all these long years. We’ll cross a suspension bridge near Pleasant Camp and soon we will arrive at Sheep Camp, where we’ll rest for the night. DAY 4: Happy Camp Today is our longest, but most memorable part of the hike. We’ll have an early breakfast and hit the trail in order to cover the 13kms to Happy Camp. Shortly after departing, we’ll pass through the Enchanted Forest; a region of gnarled trees, twisted and pitted due to the excessive snowfalls that bury them under several meters each winter. You’ll see many gold rush era artifacts littering the trail as it begins to climb towards the Scales. After weeks of hauling a ton of goods up from Skagway, 50 kilos at a time, the miners of the Klondike Gold Rush began to toss aside the non-essentials. Surprisingly the Treeline Sign is surrounded by trees, demonstrating the weather was colder in 1898 than today. But not much further along, the last tree appears, and then disappears, and soon there is nothing but rock in all directions. This is where the avalanche that claimed the lives of many gold miners in the spring of 1898 occurred, and the victims are buried nearby. A little further and we arrive at the Scales, where the Canadian Mounties weighed the goods of each person entering the Yukon to ensure they had their mandatory one ton of provisions before being allowed to continue. The trail goes almost vertical as you travel up the Golden Stairs. This is where the famous photos of the long lines of men and women bent over from their toil, were taken in 1898. It’s a tough climb, scrambling over and around large boulders, but we’ll soon reach the top and cross the border between Alaska and Canada, at over 1100 meters (3700 feet) above sea level! From here we’ll descend over snowfields, passing small lakes, creeks and rock outcrops to reach “Happy Camp” in the late afternoon. DAY 5: Lake Lindemann The trek from Happy Camp to Lindeman is thought by many to be the best part of the trail. There are some spectacular views, and more importantly, the trail is relatively flat (except at Long Lake). Deep Lake will soon appear, as will the first trees, before the trail begins to drop in elevation as we follow Moose Creek as it tumbles down from Deep Lake to Lake Lindeman, where we’ll camp for the evening. DAY 6: Bennett Lake We will awaken with mixed emotions today. With just one more hike left, there is the feeling of accomplishment after having completed an arduous hike. Yet, there is always a little sadness when the end of the trail is near. But there is still some beautiful scenery to be seen as we continue our trek, first to Bare Loon Lake and onwards to Lake Bennett. Some of the most stunning vistas in British Columbia are found here, overlooking Lake Bennett. As we approach Bennett Lake, we catch glimpses of the old gold rush era church and rail station, all that remains of the community that once was home to over 15,000 people. After a short look around, our float plane will arrive to pick us up for the spectacular 45 minutes flight to Whitehorse. The mood on board the aircraft is bound to be pensive as you reflect on your journey while the plane soars over azure waters and green-sided, snow-capped mountains. Upon arrival in Whitehorse, we’ll pick you up from the airport and bring you to your hotel where you definitely will enjoy a hot shower and a last dinner (cooked by someone else for a change!) with your new friends! DAY 7: departure Whitehorse After breakfast, we’ll bring you to the airport for your flight south or you’ll take off on your own for your next adventure. From the Base Camp at Azure Lake we will hike the Mountain Ridges and Valleys to Syenite Lakes, Divide Lake and Tombstone Mountain. One of the hikes is to Syenite Lakes over a pass into a great open northern mountain valley. There is a ridge of mountains that runs parallel to the West Blackstone River and it is accessible from Azure Lakes. The ridge allows us to get up high and have a look around at the surrounding landscape. The immediate area surrounding Azure Lake area provides excellent hiking opportunities as well. There are a number of small lakes surrounding the main lake, which are worthwhile exploring. Day hikes from our Base Camp into the surrounding mountains at the feet of Tombstone Mountain. This canoe-van combination tour begins with a nine day canoe expedition down the famous Teslin and Yukon Rivers. Far away from any civilization we paddle our canoes down the mighty streams deep into the wilderness. We follow the trail of the gold rush history, explore several abandoned settlements and constantly find relics from the historic gold rush trail. We set up our camps on the gravel and sand banks of the river. Wildlife is quite common in this area, and one can expect to see black bear, moose and bald eagles. All meals are prepared on open camp fires, and fresh trout, pike or grayling may round up the menu of the day.

Group Size

The legendary Dawson City was once the heart of the gold rush, and mining is still a major part of this rustic town. After a bath we explore Dawson and relive the history of this famous town. Highlights will be the visits to a real gold mine and the Diamond Tooth Gerties Gambling Hall.

Extending your stay?

With our van we drive up the Dempster Highway to set up camp on a campground near the Tombstone Mountains. Next days hiking trip into this great scenery is another highlight of the tour! Crossing the Yukon by ferry and via the Top of the World Highway we travel towards Alaska, passing through sub-arctic mountain tundra above the timberline. Our trail leads alongside the Alaska Range and via the Alaska Highway we drive to Beaver Creek and Burwash Landing. Kluane National Park, home of the largest, non-polar ice fields in the world is our next point of interest, and you have the option of a float plane or bush plane ride up to these magnificent glaciers. We are setting up our camps on the shores of the deep, blue Kluane Lake and explore the immense scenery of the Park during the next days. A hiking trip into one of the parkâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s high alpine valleys may give us the chance to spot wildlife such as dall sheep, moose, caribou and grizzly bear. Our stay in Kluane will be rounded up by an exciting raft trip down the wild Tatshenshini River. The next morning we travel over the Haines Road towards Haines, Alaska. The rich vegetation of the Alaskan coastline is an enormous contrast to the tundra vegetation of the Yukon. Via ferry we travel through the Lynn Fjord, passing giant glaciers and with some luck we can see seals, whales, bald eagles and the giant Alaska brown bears, making this area their home. Skagway, hundred years ago the base camp for all Chilkoot Pass travellers is another historic gold rush town. We overnight here and discover this idyllic town before we drive back to Whitehorse.

Trip Itinerary “Gold Rush Tour” Day 1: Arrival Whitehorse Arrival in Whitehorse where you’ll meet your fellow group members. Overnight in a hotel.) DAY 2 - 10: Teslin- / Yukon River Van-transfer to Johnsons Crossing, start of canoe tour down the Teslin, later the famous Yukon River. We are spending nine days on these magnificent rivers, travelling downstream appr. 360 km. DAY 10: Carmacks – Dempster Highway Arrival in Carmacks on the Yukon River. We part from our canoes and travel with our van via the Klondike Highway and will set up camp near the world famous Dempster Highway. 730 KM of gravel road linking the interior of the Yukon Territory with Inuvik located at the delta of the huge Mackenzie River in the Northwest Territories. We camp at a delightful campground at the base of Tombstone Mountain. Day 11: Tombstone Mountains We do some spectacular hiking in this remarkable landscape of tundra and mountains. The Tombstone Mountains` unique moon landscape has proved early travellers in this region with an unmistakable landmark. We spend the evening around the campfire. [Hiking time: 3 to 7 hours]. DAY 12: Dempster Highway - Dawson City We leave this remarkable area and travel towards famous Dawson City, the historic gold rush town and home of many legends. After a shower we visit Diamond Tooth Gerties Gambling Hall with poker game and Can-Can dancers.. DAY 13: Dawson City We discover Dawson City. A visit to the Jack London and Robert Service cabins and the museum are on the program. A highlight is the drive into the Bonanza and Eldorado Creeks where we visit an active gold mine. DAY 14: Dawson City – Top of the World Highway We are leaving the fields of the Klondike today by crossing the Yukon River by ferry. We travel via the Top of the World Highway towards Alaska, right through sub-arctic mountain tundra, above timberline. Today we pass the most northern US-border at Little Gold Creek and small historic towns like Chicken, Action Jackson or Jack Wade.. DAY 15: Kluane, Sheep Mountain We will cross the Alaska border near Beaver Creek, via the Alaska Highway. We’ll drive along the shores of scenic Kluane Lake. Mount Wallace, better known as Sheep Mountain is one of our stops. Here, you will be able to spot the rare white dall sheep, and you have the possibility of joining a helicopter glacier flight. [Hiking time: 3 to 6 hours] DAY 16 / 17: Haines Junction (Kluane NP) Haines Junction is the gateway to Kluane National Park. We will set up our base camp and explore the immense scenery of the park during the next few days. A hiking trip into one of the park’s high alpine valleys may give us the chance to spot wildlife such as dall sheep, moose, caribou and grizzly bear. Depending on the level of interest among the passengers we can also organise a spectacular flight by bush plane over the immense glaciers of the park (optional). DAY 19: Million Dollar Falls - Haines, alaska Drive south via Haines Road to Haines, Alaska. We are crossing Chilkat Pass in a pristine landscape and are following the Chilkat River where during fall salmon migration thousands of majestic bald eagles concentrate. We spend the rest of the day in front of the snow-covered Chilkat Mountain Range. Haines is known as an important centre of the native Tlingit culture and one can watch Totem pole carvers at work as well as visit the local theatre where ceremonial Indian dances are shown. 20. DAY 3: Skagway - Haines Road Via ferry we travel through the Lynn Fjord and with some luck we can see seals, whales, bald eagles and the giant Alaska brown bears, that make this area their home. We cross the Alaska border in Beaver Creek and travel towards Tok, home of one of the best breed of husky dogs DAY 8: Tok - Valdez An early start via the Glen Highway and through the impressive scenery of the Wrangell Mountains will lead us deeper into Alaska. The Richardson Highway connects with the Pacific Ocean and the little harbour town Valdez is embedded into the beautiful coastal range. High water falls, roughed scenery and magnificent peaks have given this region the name “little Switzerland,“ and the Trans Alaska Pipeline ends here. DAY 9: Valdez - Seward Today you’ll travel by ferry goes through the stunning Prince William Sound; undoubtedly one of the scenic highlights of Alaska. The route runs close to the Pacific coast, passing several calving glaciers in College Fjord. The massive Columbia Glacier is one of the most spectacular on the route. There are also excellent opportunities for wildlife viewing. With a little luck you’ll see otters, harbour seals, sea lions or even whales! Back on land we’ll visit one of Alaska’s “drive-up” glaciers near Portage Glaciers before continuing south along Kenai Peninsula. Keep an eye open for the white beluga whales, which can often be seen here frolicking in the shallow waters! The afternoon is free for optional sighseeing and touring in Anchorage, the largest city in Alaska. There are many interesting things to discover including Lake Hood, which is home to the largest float plane base in the world. Each day, some 800 floatplanes take off and land from this location in central Anchorage! Nearby is the Aviation Museum, where many legendary bush aircraft are on display. Downtown Anchorage offers excellent souvenir shopping at several American-style “malls.” Or if shopping is not your idea of a fun activity on holiday, how about a visit to one of the many pubs and locally crafted “micro” breweries?!

DAY 12: Anchorage - Denali National Park Northbound via George Parks Highway towards Denali National Park, through incredible landscape. We overnight on a campground near the park entrance. DAY 13 / 14: Denali National Park The next highlight of the tour is a visit to Denali National Park with mighty Mt. McKinley, the highest peak in North America. We spend two days in and around the park and with some luck we will see dall sheep, moose, caribou and grizzly bears. DAY 15: Denali National Park - Fairbanks We are again on the George Parks Highway and the compass needle is pointed northward. Nenana and the Alaska Railroad Museum is another point of interest en route towards Fairbanks, less than 200 km south of the polar circle. Fairbanks invites you to visit the dog mush museum or the many restaurants specialised in Alaska King Crabs... a true delicacy. Another possibility is to join the tour on a sternwheeler on the Chena River. Or choose the visit of “Crown of Light,“ a slide show about the northern lights. DAY 16: Fairbanks - Dawson City We have reached our most northerly point of this exciting journey and we cross the Tanana River directly abeam the Trans Alaska Pipeline. We also reach mile zero of the Alaska Highway in Delta Junction and we will stop in North Pole, the hometown of Santa Claus. Here it seems to be Christmas year round. We travel via the Top of the World Highway back towards Canada, right through Sub-arctic Mountain tundra, above timberline. Today we pass the most northern US-boarder at Little Gold Creek and small historic towns like Chicken, Action Jackson or Jack Wade Camp. Early afternoon we reach the Yukon River and set up camp next to the shores. DAY 17: Dawson City We cross the Yukon River by ferry and start to discover Dawson, the historic gold town and home of many legends. A visit to the Jack London and Robert Service cabins and the gold rush museum are on the program. A highlight is the drive into the Bonanza and Eldorado Creeks where we visit an active gold mine. Later we will drive up the “Midnight Dome,“ the mountain overlooking Dawson. We can stroll through the quaint little town where so many buildings from the gold rush era are preserved. In the evening we watch Can-Can girls in the casino “Diamond Tooth Gerties.“ Further recommended is a visit to the Palace Grand Theatre with its musical about the gold rush period. DAY 18: Dawson City - Dempster Highway We are leaving the fields of the Klondike today and will set up camp near the world famous Dempster Highway. 730 KM of gravel road linking the interior of Yukon Territory with Inuvik at the delta of the huge Mackenzie River in Northwest Territories. As we reach Engineer Creek Campground, the huge mass of Sapper Hill, with its castle-like cliffs of dolomite, gains prominence. DAY 19: Dempster Highway After we explored the facinating scenery of the Dempster Highway we will make our way back to the Tombstone Mountains. We camp at a delightful campground at the base of Tombstone Mountain. 20. DAY Tombstone Mountains We do some spectacular hiking in this remarkable landscape of tundra and mountains. The Tombstone Mountains` unique moon landscape has proved early travellers in this region with an unmistakable landmark. Today we spend the last evening around the campfire and in tents. [Hiking time: 3 to 6 hours] Day 21: Dempster Highway - Whitehorse Via the Klondike Highway we return to Whitehorse, following the mighty Yukon River basin. The Yukon River, over 3500-KM in length is one of the worlds longest water highways. The dangerous and infamous Five Finger Rapids only interrupted the historic journey of the sternwheelers - another stop of interest for us. Many relicts like old cabins, abandoned post stations and small settlements help us to relive the gold rush times. Hotel overnight in Whitehorse. Meeting with the tour guide and briefing over dinner at the hotel. Hotel overnight in Calgary. DAY 2: BANFF NATIONAL PARK After breakfast at the hotel this morning drive to Banff NP. On the campground (showers) in the forests of Banff National Park you pitch your tent for the next two days. Now it is time for the first hike along the shores of Minnewanka Lake on one of the many mountain trails. Hiking time 2 – 3 hours.

DAY 3: BANFF NATIONAL PARK On a full day hike you explore passes above the tree line and alpine meadows. For example 7.5 kms with 725 m gain (4.6 mi, 2414 ft) to a small lake and possibly 2 km further into the pass at 2470 m (8225 ft). This evening you sit be the camp fire or walk along the busy streets of Banff with its many stores and visitors from around the world. Hiking time 5 – 7 hours. DAY 4: YOHO NATIONAL PARK You would not want to miss the picture postcard scenery surrounding Lake Louise. The guide suggests a short but steep path of 7.5 kms with 600 m gain (2.5 mi, 1998 ft) to a viewpoint, or hike for another two km to the summit. Now a short drive into the mountain wilderness on the western flank of the Rockies. You set up camp under the pines of Yoho Park (showers) before you visit Takakkaw Falls, Spiral Tunnel and other attractions. Hiking time 3 – 5 hours.

DAY 5: YOHO NATIONAL PARK There is an opportunity for a great white water rafting trip on the Kicking Horse River. It involves a side trip to Golden in B.C., headquarters for many outdoor adventures. Of course hiking is always an alternative. Among the choice of trails the guide would like to show you is an 18 km (11 mi) circuit trough two flower decorated passes at 1830 m and 2180 m (6093 ft and 7250 ft) and spectacular views of Emerald Lake. Hiking time 6 hours. DAY 6: JASPER NATIONALPARK Frequent stops and short excursions along the Icefields Parkway on your way into the heart of the Rockies. Famous names like Peyto Lake and Bow Summit. At the Columbia Icefields huge glaciers spawn rivers, which eventually reach three different oceans. Saskatchewan Glacier is best viewed from far above after hiking 2.5 kms to a windy ridge at 2260 m (7525 ft). Camp for the next two days is near the little holiday town of Jasper (showers). Hiking time two hours. DAY 7: JASPER NATIONALPARK So many possibilities, swimming and a picnic at Pyramid Lake, mountain biking, trail rides, canoeing and more. Or join the guide for a side trip to Maligne Lake and a eight km (five miles) loop hike with 460 m gain (1532 ft) into the hills above tree line at 2150 m (7160 ft) elevation and possibly all the way to a 2790 m (9290 ft) peak overlooking this beautiful lake. Hiking time 2 – 6 hours. DAY 8: CALGARY Mighty Athabasca Falls count among the attractions of this park. Trails near the Columbia Icefields start at tree line and are especially rewarding thanks to their magnificent views of the glaciers and surrounding ranges. Your final hike is the 11 kms (6.9 mi) loop with 335 m (1155 ft) gain through Wilcox Pass at 2375 m (7980 ft). After lunch is transfer back to Calgary. Hotel overnight Calgary. DAY 9: CALGARY – WHITEHORSE Flight to Whitehorse, Yukon Territory. DAY 12: DEMPSTER HIGHWAY – DAWSON CITY We leave this remarkable area and travel towards famous Dawson City, the historic gold rush town and home of many legends. After a shower we visit Diamond Tooth Gerties Gambling Hall with poker game and Cancan-Dance-Girls. DAY 13: DAWSON CITY We discover Dawson City. A visit to the Jack London and Robert Service cabins and the museum are on the program. A highlight is the drive into the Bonanza and Eldorado Creeks where we visit an active gold mine. DAY 14: TOP OF THE WORLD HIGHWAY We are leaving the fields of the Klondike today by crossing the Yukon River by ferry. We travel via the Top of the World Highway towards Alaska, right through Sub-arctic Mountain tundra, above timberline. Today we pass the most northern US-border at Little Gold Creek and small historic towns like Chicken, Action Jackson or Jack Wade. DAY 15: KLUANE, SHEEP MOUNTAIN Via Alaska Highway we cross the Alaska Border in Beaver Creek. We drive besides the shores of scenic Kluane Lake. Mount Wallace, better known as Sheep Mountain is one of our stops. Here, you will be able to spot the rare white dall sheep, and you have the possibility of joining a helicopter glacier flight. DAY 16 / 17: HAINES JUNCTION (kluane np) Haines Junction, the gateway to Kluane National Park. We are setting up our base camp and explore the immense scenery of the Park during the next days. A hiking trip into one of the park’s high alpine valleys may give us the chance to spot wildlife such as dall sheep, moose, caribou and grizzly bear. Depending on the level of interest among the passengers we can also organise a spectacular flight by bush plane over

the immense glaciers of the park (optional). This adventure, over a virtually pristine wilderness, is especially spectacular during a clear day. With Haines Junction as a base one has a variety of options. This area is simply an adventure wonderland. DAY 18: KLUANE NP – TATSHENSCHINI RIVER White water rafting on the Tatshenshini River, a tumultuous rafting tour down this world famous river. Another highlight of the tour! Overnight at Million Dollar Falls Campground. DAY 19: MILLION DOLLAR FALLS - HAINES, alaska Drive south via the Haines Road to Haines, Alaska. We are crossing Chilkat Pass in a pristine landscape and are following the Chilkat River where during fall salmon migration thousands of majestic bald eagles concentrate. We spend the rest of the day in front of the snow-covered Chilkat Mountain Range. Haines is known as an important centre of the native Tlingit culture and one can watch Totem pole carvers at work as well as visit the local theatre where ceremonial native dances are shown. DAY 20: HAINES - SKAGWAY Via ferry we travel through the Lynn Fjord and with some luck we can see seals, whales, bald eagles and the giant Alaska brown bears, making this area their home. Skagway, a hundred years ago the base camp for all Chilkoot Pass travellers is still a historic gold rush town. Many well preserved relics bear witness to its colourful past, including the head of the notorious Chilkoot Trail. In the evening one can relax and get a taste of the gold rush atmosphere in one of the historic bars, for example the “Red Onion Saloon“ once a brothel. Day 21: SKAGWAY - WHITEHORSE Sightseeing of Skagway in the morning. Optional ride with the famous Whitepass-Railroad. On our way back to Whitehorse we will stop at the smallest desert in the world - the Carcross desert - and we will of course also admire Emerald Lake, called “Rainbow Lake” from the locals due to its sensational coloration. DAY 3: Vancouver - Kelowna Today we’ll leave the Pacific coast behind and travel east to the beautiful Okanagan Valley. Perhaps challenging your notion of Canada, this sun-drenched region is home to countless award-winning vineyards and abundant orchards. Kelowna is located along the shores of Lake Okanagan; look out for “Ogopogo”, a sea monster who lives in the lake. The legend of Ogopogo comes from the local First Nations people who have told stories of a large animal living in the lake for generations. (Overnight accommodation in Kelowna). DAY 4: Kelowna - Banff National park Today we’ll leave the Okanagan Valley with its dry climate behind and travel to the beautiful Canadian Rocky Mountains! We’ll cross over the Rockies via famous Rogers Pass. This is the highest altitude point of the entire Trans Canada Highway. The road travels through several narrow gorges and canyons before reaching Kicking Horse Pass in Yoho National Park. Kicking Horse Pass was named by Palliser, the first European Explorer to cross the southern Rockies. Keep a close eye on the roadsides; wildlife is often spotted along the roadway and on the mountainsides! (Overnight accommodation in Banff). DAY 5: Banff National park Pure nature! Today is completely at your leisure for the exploration of this magnificent national park. The region was established as Canada’s first national park in 1885 to protect a natural hot spring just above the Banff town-site. We’ll experience the spectacular canyons, waterfalls and mountain passes, and of course we’ll also visit the picturesque Lake Louise, a mountain lake in a fantastic location on the foot of Victoria Glacier area, where attract beautiful walks. In the afternoon, we’ll return to Banff where you’ll have the opportunity to explore the historic town. DAY 6: Banff - Jasper National park Today, without question, will be another highlight of your trip as we travel the famous “Icefield Parkway”; one of the most scenic areas the North American continent. Along the way you’ll see the snow-capped mountains and glaciers of the Columbia Icefield – this is the Canada of your dreams! About halfway between Banff and Jasper you’ll have the opportunity to take an optional tour by Sno-Coach (a vehicle specially made for glacier exploration) on the stunning Athabasca Glacier. We’ll also stop in at beautiful Maligne Canyon for views of one of the most impressive waterfalls in Canada before ending the day in the Jasper, located in the heart of Jasper National Park. DAY 8: Prince George - Smithers Today we’ll continue westbound on the Yellowhead Highway through a vast river and lake landscape; full of beaver dams and surrounded by forests as far as the eye can see. The drive today will give you a sense of Canada’s vastness. Smithers is a small, rustic town that has been heavily influenced by Europeans, who have found the laidback atmosphere and surrounding mountain ranges a nice contrast to the overcrowded cities of Europe. DAY 9: Smithers – Prince Rupert / Inside Passage Departing Smithers, we’ve planned a stop at Moricetown Falls; a canyon where the local First Nation people fish for salmon. We’ll also visit the Ksan Indian Village with its totem poles and long houses, before continuing along the picturesque river reaches of the Skeena River. The area around Terrace is world famous with sport fishermen for its giant king (Chinook) salmon. In the afternoon we’ll reach the port of Prince Rupert, where the ferry for our journey along the Inside Passage is waiting to depart. “All aboard!!” for the journey north along the Canadian and Alaskan coast. Disembarking in Skagway, we’ll travel the last leg of the journey over the Klondike Highway to Whitehorse, the capital of the Canada’s Yukon. Located on the banks of the Yukon River, Whitehorse was an important supply centre during the Klondike Goldrush of 1898, the greatest the world has ever seen. The community of 25,000 still retains its frontier feel; time permitting this evening, we’ll visit the SS Klondike National Historic Site. DAY 3: Haines Junction - Tok Today we drive along the scenic shore of the huge Lake Kluane. A first stop is planned at the Sheep Mountain Visitor Centre. Chances are you will spot some of the scarce snow-white dall sheep on the surrounding mountains. (Overnight accommodation in Tok) DAY 4: Tok - Valdez The first part of today’s stretch will lead us via the Glenn Highway along countless rivers, lakes, glaciers and finally the majestic Wrangell-St. Elias National Park. Then we will drive the Richardson Highway southbound to the small seaport of Valdez at the pacific coast. The crossing of the coastal range via the Thompson Pass is spectacular, with thundering falls right next to the road. Valdez, called little Switzerland by its inhabitants, is enframed by alpine surroundings. The town is also known for the world famous Trans Alaska Pipeline that ends here and the big oil tankers taking a load. Trip Itinerary “northern Coast Mountains” Day 1: Whitehorse (arrival) Individual journey of the participants to Whitehorse. Welcome to Canada’s Yukon. At the airport, you will be welcomed by your tour-guide. Transfer to the hotel. Meeting with your fellow travellers. (Overnight accommodation in Whitehorse). DAY 2: Whitehorse - Haines Junct ion After breakfast you will get a general view of the Yukon’s capital. Part of it may be a visit to the restored sternwheeler MS Klondike next to the Yukon River. The big roundtrip will begin with a first short stage on the Alaska Highway westbound. You will encounter scenic points of interest inviting you to stop before reaching Haines Junction - situated right next to Kluane National Park - early in the afternoon. Kluane National Park not only is Canada’s biggest national park, here you will find apart from a variety of wildlife the largest glacier area of the world outside North and South Pole. Even today, most of this huge national park is still unexplored and pristine. Depending on the weather and the group wishes a guided small hike into the national park can take place. DAY 3: Haines Junct ion - Tok Today we drive along the scenic shore of the huge Lake Kluane. A first stop is planned at the Sheep Mountain Visitor Center. Chances are you will spot some of the scarce snow-white dall sheep on the surrounding mountains. In Tok you may visit a sled dog demonstration. (Overnight accommodation in Tok). DAY 4: Tok - Valdez The first part of today’s stretch will lead us via the Glenn Highway along countless rivers, lakes, glaciers and finally the majestic Wrangell-St. Elias National Park. Then we will drive the Richardson Highway southbound to the small seaport of Valdez at the Pacific coast. The crossing of the coastal range via the Thompson Pass is spectacular, with thundering falls right next to the road. Valdez, called little Switzerland by its inhabitants, is enframed by alpine surroundings. The town is also known for the world famous Trans Alaska Pipeline that ends here and the big oil tankers taking a load. (Overnight accommodation in Valdez). DAY 5: Valdez - Whittier - SEWARD Today we travel the Prince William Sound via ferry. Without a doubt this is a highlight among the scenic beauties of Alaska. The route is close to the pacific coast, passing calving glaciers, the Columbia Glacier probably being the most spectacular of them all. Odds are you will spot a variety of wildlife. With a little luck you will be able to take pictures not only of otters and puffins, but of sea lions and even whales, too. Ashore again, the next stop is the Portage Glacier, which is almost accessible by car. (Overnight accommodation in Seward) DAY 6: SEWARD - ANCHORAGE A very nice option to start the day is a tour into Kenai Fjords National Park (optional). We drive along the Turnagain Arm into Anchorage. Watch out for Beluga-Whales in this area! This day in Alaska’s biggest city is at your free disposal for sightseeing in and around Anchorage. There are many interesting things to discover: Lakes Hood and Spenard, the largest marine airport. In summer, up to 800 floatplanes, take off and land here daily. Nearby is the aviation museum where you can admire several legendary aircraft. In downtown Anchorage you will find the Art Museum, the Museum of History and Art and of course the typically American shopping malls. Maybe you would like to visit one of the bars or microbreweries, which offer various kinds of beer brewed in the house. For night people, Anchorage still has one or the other surprise to offer. For example a very special dinner at the restaurant “Gwennies”, they not only offer the biggest and best steaks - gold digger style - you may admire the history of the origins of Anchorage there, too. Trip Itinerary “Yukon & Alaska Explorer” Day 1: Arrival Whitehorse Individual arrival in Whitehorse, at the airport you will be met by our local tour guide and transferred to the hotel where we will meet the rest of the group. (Overnight accommodation in Whitehorse) DAY 2: Whitehorse - Skagway After breakfast we will explore the capital of the Yukon and then start on the first part of our trip driving south to Skagway, Alaska through White Pass on the Klondike Highway. We will stop at the Carcross Desert – the smallest desert in the world – and admire the beauty of Lake Emerald, which is also called the Rainbow Lake by the locals because of its sensational watercolours. In Carcross we will pass by the beautiful Tlingit facades before heading to Montana Mountain for our first hike. Here we will enjoy the look out to the Lakes Nares and Bennet. After ourhike we will continue through White Pass on our drive to Skagway. (Overnight accommodation in Skagway) DAY 3: Skagway – Haines Junction Skagway was once the gate to the greatest gold rush of all time! The Chilkoot Trail was once the path leading to the gold rivers. Later that afternoon we will board the ferry bringing us through the Lynn Fjords. Arriving at the harbour of Haines we will continue to drive to Haines Junction. Shortly after leaving the pacific coast we will pass the Valley of the Bald Eagles. The Haines Road offers plenty of opportunities to see the breathtaking view of the mountains. Passing the Lakes Dezedash and Kathleen we arrive at Haines Junction. This evening you will have the option of taking a helicopter flight over the glaciated ranges of Kluane National Park. DAY 4: Haines Junction / Kluane Nationalpark Today we will spend all day hiking through the Kluane National Park, which is the largest national park Canada. DAY 5: Haines Junction – Whitehorse We will spend the morning hiking another trail in the Kluane National Park called the Auriol Trail, which will take about four hours. In late afternoon we will continue on the two hour drive to Whitehorse via the Alaska Highway. On our way to Whitehorse we will stop at the Da K Cultural Centre to obtain an overview on the native cultures of the area. In late afternoon we will have some time for a short hike along the Yukon River to see the gold rush ghost town of Canyon City. (Overnight accommodation in Whitehorse) DAY 6: Whitehorse – Dawson City On our way out of Whitehorse we will stop at the Beringia Centre, a museum featuring prehistoric ice age history and the ancient landscape of Beringia. On our journey to Dawson City we will travel parallel to the Yukon River, which is with 3200km one of the longest rivers in North America. Dawson City offers a wide variety of historic sites that are easily accessible on foot. (Overnight accommodation in Dawson City) DAY 7: Dempster Highway After getting up real early we will drive two hours up the Dempster Highway, which in total is 730 km long and is the only connection to the peak of Inuvik at the Polar Sea. We will start hiking at the foot of the Tombstone Mountains, which will lead us into this spectacular mountain’s tundra regions where every season has its unique attraction. (Overnight accommodation in Dawson City.) DAY 8: Dawson City A highlight is the drive into the Bonanza and Eldorado Creeks where we visit an active gold mine. Later we will drive up the Midnight Dome, the mountain overlooking Dawson. We can stroll through the quaint little town where so many buildings from the gold rush era are preserved. Dawson City offers a wide variety of historic sites that are easily accessible on foot. At the end of the day we will visit the Diamond Tooth Gerties Casino featuring the Cancan Dance girls. (Overnight accommodation in Dawson City) DAY 9: DAWSON CITY - GLENALLEN Today we will leave the Klondike continuing on a ferry over the Yukon River to the Top of the World Highway – one of the most beautiful and spectacular high roads of North America. We will cross the highest borderline between Canada and the US at Little Gold Creek. During this drive we will have opportunities for short hikes along the way. (Overnight accommodation in Glenallen) DAY 10: GLENALLEN – DENALI NATIONALPARK Today takes us further west, first along the famous and scenic Denali Highway. The Denali Highway offers a almost cinematic wilderness panorama. The route takes us through a vast glacial floodplain; the road in fact is built on glacial eskers as it travels to the border of Denali National Park. This is one of the most remote regions in the north; few Alaskans have ever travelled this route. In the evening there is the option to participate in a scenic one hour glacier flight that will provide a chance to view Mt. Denali, North America’s tallest peak (over 6000m!) in good weather. (Overnight accommodation in the vicinity of the park) Day 11: Denali National park Without question, today will be a highlight of your trip. A national park shuttle bus takes us deep into one of the most scenic landscapes in North America. In good weather you can see majestic Mt. Denali; at 6193 meters it is the highest mountain in the USA. The wildlife in Denali is very impressive. With a little luck you will see all the wildlife on your list including wolves, Dall’s sheep, moose, caribou and even the mighty grizzly bear. Smaller animals such as fox and coyotes are often spotted on their forays while golden eagles and other birds of prey soar overhead. This is the Alaska of your dreams! (Overnight accommodation in the vicinity of the park) DAY 12: Denali National park - Seward Today we say goodbye to Denali and travel along the George Parks Highway through the interior to Anchorage. There, we join the Seward Highway and travel along scenic Turnagain Arm; named by Captain Cook after yet another unsuccessful attempt to find the Northwest Passage. The spectacular tides, among the highest in the world, attract beluga whales who hunt salmon in the murky waters. In Portage, we’ll visit one of Alaska’s drive-in glaciers before continuing along the Kenai Peninsula. DAY 13: Seward This morning we’ll hike in the Seward area. Here hiking options include Exit Glacier, the Iditarod Trail, the spectacular Coastal Trail (tide dependent), historic Fort McGilvary with its dark tunnels and Tonsina Beach with its salmon stream just to name a few. Your guide will have a plan based on seasonal events and weather conditions. In the afternoon you have the option to hike but today you might like to take advantage of one of the main draws of the Seward area – the Kenai Fjords National Park. This optional six-hour marine life viewing cruise is teeming with wildlife including seals, sea lions, sea otters, as well as orca (killer) and humpback whales. Seabirds abound, including bald eagles, kittiwakes and the loveable puffins. Moose and black bears are often spotted along the shorelines. Trip Itinerary “Alaska & Yukon Explorer” Day 1: ANCHORAGE arrival Individual arrival to Anchorage. DAY 2: ANCHORAGE – SEWARD Sit back and enjoy the spectacular landscape roll by as we head to the seaside town of Seward. Following Turnagain Arm we have sweeping views of first the Chugach Mountains then the Kenai Range. Imagine this route plied by Native peoples, Russian fur traders, European explorers and American gold prospectors. The drive along the dramatic shoreline of Turnagain Arm with its immense tidal flats is one of the most beautiful roads in North America. As we approach Seward we come to Moose Pass where the start of the 1600 km Iditarod Trail begins. Here teams of hardy men and huskies begin one of the toughest, most arduous races in the world. Along our route we will stop for some short hikes. Our hikes will depend on the group’s interest whether it be looking for ideal bird-watching or catching a glimpse of the local salmon runs. Make sure to take time to communicate with your guide since there are so many options! Day 11: WHITEHORSE – HAINES JUNCTION After a short drive we will arrive in the quaint town of Haines Junction with the magnificent mountains of Kluane National Park hanging in the distance. On our way into Haines Junction, we will stop at the Da K Cultural Centre to orient ourselves on the cultures of the area. Once we’ve settled into our hotel and had a quick lunch, we will head out to trek the Auriol Trail in Kluane National Park. This four-hour trail is an excellent introduction to the park as it explores mixed boreal forest surrounded by mountain vistas. (Overnight accommodation in Haines Junction) DAY 12: HAINES JUNCTION / KLUANE NATIONA LPARK Today we will spend all day hiking through the Kluane National Park, which is the largest national park Canada. We do a full-day hike on one of many trails leading to Sheep Mountain and offering views of Kluane Lake. This evening you will have the option of taking a sightseeing flight over the glaciated ranges of Kluane National Park. (Overnight accommodation in Haines Junction) DAY 13: HAINES JUNCTION – SKAGWAY Today we will take the spectacular road to Haines. Shortly before arriving at the pacific coast we will pass the Valley of the Bald Eagles. In Haines we’ll catch the ferry through the picturesque Lynn Fjords to Skagway – once the gate to the greatest gold rush of all time! Late afternoon/evening free to explore this interesting town, hike to Yakutania Point, do some shopping or just grab a coffee and watch the otters play in the river. (Overnight in Skagway) DAY 14: SKAGWAY – WHITEHORSE After breakfast we will head back to the Yukon on the Klondike Highway. After passing through White Pass and crossing the border, we will stop to explore Montana Mountain just outside of Carcross. Here we will enjoy the look out to the Lakes Nares and Bennet. After our hike we will stop to see the Tlingit Facades in the village of Carcross then head on to the Carcross Desert – the smallest desert in the world. As we follow the road to Whitehorse we will also stop to admire the beauty of Emerald Lake, which is also called the Rainbow Lake by the locals because of its sensational watercolours. Day 1: Arrival anchorage Tucked between six mountain ranges and skirted by the Bering Sea, Anchorage has more than 60 glaciers, a myriad of wildlife and a collection of volcanoes nearby. Welcome to the beginning of your adventure! DAY 2: Anchorage - Skagway Sit back and enjoy the spectacular landscape roll by as we head to the seaside town of Seward. As we follow Turnagain Arm we have sweeping views of first the Chugach Mountains then the Kenai Range. Imagine this route plied by Native peoples, Russian fur traders, European explorers and American gold prospectors. The drive along the dramatic shoreline of Turnagain Arm with its immense tidal flats is one of the most beautiful road in North America. From here we will climb to Turnagain Pass and descend into the Anchorage Bowl, which is often blanketed with colourful wildflowers. As we approach Seward we come to Moose Pass where the start of the 1600 kms Iditarod Trail begins. Here teams of hardy men and huskies begin one of the toughest, most arduous races in the world. Moose Pass is also a great place to see migrating salmon in season. On our final stretch to Seward we encounter numerous glacier lakes including Kenai, Meridien and Grayling. Just before arriving and settling into our Seward hotel we’ll visit Exit Glacier to stretch our legs and enjoy a close up view. DAY 3: Seward - Valdez (via Prince William Sound) It’s time see some spectacular seascapes! Today we board the ferry to cruise past Prince William Sound’s massive icebergs, calving glaciers and abundant sea life. Make sure to have your camera handy since it’s common to spot puffins, seals, otters and even whales on this stretch of water! After disembarking we’ll continue to Valdez. During this stretch of road keep an eye out for bear, moose and sheep.

Day 4: Valdez to Fairbanks Settle in for a relaxing road trip with incredible stops along the way as we head to Fairbanks. Our route is surrounding by towering mountain ranges, glaciers and wildlife. In fact, two 160 kms section of this road are designated as scenic byways by the state. DAY 2: Glacier Bay Tour travels up the west arm of Glacier Bay to the face of the Margerie and Grand Pacific Glaciers, two towering masses of ice and snow. Rising 250 feet above the waterline and stretching another 100 feet below the water, the ice calving from the Margerie Glacier is an average of 200 years old. Several whale species feed extensively in the bay, including the endangered Humpback whales as well as Minke and Killer whales. Our floating lodge, tucked in beautiful Glendale Cove is home to one of the largest concentrations of grizzly (brown) bears in British Columbia. It is not uncommon for there to be up to 50 bears within 10 kilometres of the lodge in the peak fall season, when the salmon are returning to the river! CANCELLATION AND REFUND BY Ruby Range Adventure LTD.: If the minimum number of participants has not been reached, we reserve the right to cancel a tour 14 days prior to start of the tour. You will be notified immediately and you are entitled to a full refund if you are unable to join one of our other departures. If we or our partners are forced to change the itinerary due to unforeseen circumstances, like forest fires, floods, breakdowns, all decisions are left to the discretion of the tour guide. Charter Services & Custom Programs are subject to a deposit and cancellation policy that is different from our standard payment and cancellation policy. For all activity programs (i.e., but not limited to, river rafting, horseback riding, canoeing, hiking, sightseeing etc.) in Canada and USA clients will have to sign a “waiver of liability”. The client agrees to sign a waiver of liability at the beginning of the program. Ruby Range Adventure will, of course, always do its best to ensure the greatest possible safety for all its clients. Ruby Range Adventure can also not be held liable for changes in tour itineraries due to weather conditions, acts of God or special conditions beyond our control. All costs that may result from any delays of passengers at the airport or any delays that might occur at the end of the trip are the responsibility of the client.
