SCARLET KNIGHTS TRAINING METHODS GLADIATOR TRAINING

Rutgers wrestling goes through a combination of workouts they call “Gladiator Training.” One of the goals of “Gladiator Training” is to create functional strength in unconventional positions. The tools utilized for training are: four 250-pound tractor tires, an eight pound hammer, a bungee cord harness, an 18-pound stick, and a sand pit. The student-athletes are placed into stations that require them to perform exercises with the various tools. The exercises vary from flipping the tractor tires and then jumping in and out of them, hitting the tires with the hammer, doing sprints against the bungee harness in the sand pit, and attempting to drive one of your teammates out of the sand pit while you both are holding on to the stick. The second part of the training puts the teammates from each weight class together. The wrestlers use their teammate as the resistance for the exercise. The partners must complete: Buddy Cleans: the wrestler picks up his teammate, holding him perpendicular to the ground, raises him to his head, and lowers him to his waist. Buddy Crunches: wrap your legs around your teammate’s waist while your teammate is standing and complete crunches. Bear Drag: one partner lays on his back and holds on to his teammate’s neck. The wrestler on all fours must drag his teammate on the ground while maintaining proper bear crawl form. Hip Switch: the wrestler picks up his teammate in a belly to back position, loads him onto one hip and then switches him to other hip, never allowing him to touch the ground. Kamikaze Run: each athlete jogs four lines of approximately 20 yards, sprints one line and jogs three lines, sprints two lines and jogs one, etc., until all four lines are sprints.

2009-10 SEASON PREVIEW

Third-year Rutgers head coach Scott Goodale previews the 2009-10 season.

On what he thinks of his team entering the season. “I like where we are at entering the season. I think we had a really good preseason. We prepared for early November and getting ready for our upcoming season. November is a tough month for us. I think we are exactly where we want to be. We are certainly not peaking right now and wrestling our best but that will come as we go there will be peak and valleys during the course of the season.” On his induction into the South Jersey Wrestling Hall of Fame this year. “I think it’s a reflection of what I did at the high school level. It’s a great honor and a humbling experience. I grew up wrestling in South Jersey. It’s exciting for my family. It is a great honor and I am going in with a class that is pretty special.” On what he sees out of transfers Billy Ashnault and Daryl Cocozzo. “They are everything we expected them to be. I fully expect them to be competing at a extremely high level come March. I think they will be right in the thick of things. Its hard for me to sit here and say that they will be at the top of the podium and be a national champ because I don’t know that but dealing with them the first couple of months they have high goals and being on the podium at the national tournament is one of them. They are doing everything right at the moment. It’s a hard thing to be disciplined in every single area not just wrestling but with their academics and their social life. They are doing a really good job and I do not know how many people know this but Daryl Cocozzo worked his tail off just to get into Rutgers University. He did everything he needed to do. He is doing a great job training just like Billy. Billy’s biggest thing was controlling his weight and he is down the weight already so we are excited about that. These two guys are everything that we expected. They can flat out wrestle. We expect a lot out of them and they are going to contribute to us for sure.”

Junior transfer Billy Ashnault (left) and redshirt junior transfer Daryl Cocozzo (right) are expected to make a big impact in 2009-10.

On adding assistant coach Cory Cooperman to his staff this year. “I think it’s the direction we are going and what (Rutgers Director of Athletics) Tim Pernetti and the whole athletic department have done. They have allowed us to attract top notch coaches. We got Brandon Becker two years ago who is a three-time All-American from Indiana. Now we get Cory Cooperman who is a threetime All-American from Lehigh who was at Cornell University for the past three years. He helped produce national champions during his time at Cornell. Cory is a dynamic kid who can wrestle. He has a different style of wresting that our kids are attracted to. It’s a funky, fun and exciting style to watch. He brings a lot of great things from Cornell. They are one of the best teams in the country they were ranked second at one point during the year. We are getting some of the ideas he brought from Cornell and we are putting them into our practices and in our preparation for the season. Obviously, getting someone like him to compliment Brandon and of course John Leonardis – who has been with me since day one - I like our staff right now. I like everything about it. I think it’s one of the best young staffs in the country. These guys are passionate about what we are trying to do.” On if the success of hie program has surprised him, being that he is only entering his third year at RU. “It might of moved a bit quicker than I thought, which is a good thing. It is exactly where I want to be right now . We have five guys with a national preseason ranking. We have a team that believes they should be knocking off nationally-ranked kids and that was what the plan was. Everyone said it was a four or five-year plan and heck I wanted to win yesterday. I understand there is a process to this and everyday it is a challenge and these guys and this staff want to get to the highest level of this sport in college wrestling. We are doing all the right things but it is a process . I understand the process. I just think right now we got guys that truly believe they can win and not only win but in a big spot and win on a big stage.“ On giving Scott Winston a redshirt this season, who finished last season ranked No. 12 in the 157-weight class. “As good as he is, he still can improve. He needs to get better. We still feel we are a couple years away from really making an impact on the national scene. We reconstructed the whole program when we got here (2007-08). It takes four or five years to get to that level. The reason we are redshirting Winston and why we redshirted Lamar (Brown) last year is because it is another year of getting better and another year of understanding our system and maturing. He needs to get better on the mat. He needs to be a mat wrestle. Most of the time you redshirt a guy it is during his freshman year. We decided to play Winston last year and he was a big reason why we won a school-record 20 matches. He has been a huge part of the rise of this program. He has put us at a level where people recognize Rutgers wrestling right now. His success helped Rutgers receive national attention.”

2009-10 SEASON PREVIEW

Rutgers Head Coach Scott Goodale breaks down the Scarlet Knights 2009-10 squad by weight class:

125 “This is probably our deepest class even though our starter from last year (Matt Fusco) will redshirt. Joey Langel was a high-school national champ from Howel. Vinny Dellefave comes in as one of the best New Jersey High School wrestlers. Mike DeMarco has wrestled in the EIWA tournament the last two years. Those three guys are very competitive. They have some great credentials. All three are in the mix. We feel comfortable with them. I don’t know who will get the nod yet.” 133 “Billy Ashnault will probably start. He has clearly been the front runner. He qualified for NCAAs two years ago. He transferred from Lock Haven. He understands everything. He is a very good pinner, like David Greenwald. He has won in big spots before. Ashnault will probably be backed up by Cullen Isenberg. Isenberg comes with great credentials he placed at the national prep tournament last year. He is a good wrestler. He may be forced to wrestle because we are not really deep at that weight.” 141 “Trevor Melde is a clear cut favorite for that spot. He cracked the national rankings at one point last year. He already has some good wins against some nationally ranked guys. He has had a good preseason. He seems very focused for a breakout year. He is working towards becoming an All-American. We will have two freshmen backing him up Luke Rigoglioso or Tom Hogan. Hogan is more of an athlete. Those two guys will develop during their time here.” 149 “David Greenwald is our frontrunner. He has had some huge wins for us. He is a great pinner. He has done everything right. Kellen Bradley will back him up. 14

Dave Seidenberg will reshirt. Bradley has some big wins. He is a fifth-year senior with a lot of experience. We are pretty deep at that class.” 157 “Daryl Cocozzo will be able to compete for the Scarlet Knight starting at the Midlands. He is one of the best guys in our locker room. He trains hard and comes from a great program. He is a guy that we will count on in the second semester. Since Daryl can’t go to start the season, it will be Jack Barrett or Braden Turner.” 165. “With (Scott) Winston redshirting this year it is down to two guys – Matt Rigoglioso and Gregory Zannetti. Greg had a number of wins backing up Winston. Both have done a good job in the offseason. Both went to University Nationals. They were matches away from placing at University Nationals. I don’t know who the guy is going to be right now. I like where we are at there. I think we have two guys there that wrestle hard. They are extremely conditioned athletes who like to push the pace. That is a spot we need to win at for us to have a successful season.”

174 “174 is an extremely balanced weight class. We have two kids who I believe will have great futures here at Rutgers. Dan Rinaldi and Dan Seidenberg were in the same weight classes during their high school careers and never wrestled each other. They have great credentials. Rinaldi had a great redshirt campaign last year. Seidenberg probably has the most upside of anybody in our locker room. That will be a great match. Arguably our best match.” 184 “Jesse Boyden dropped down from 197 and made the weight. He didn’t get any chances to compete but he worked his tail off to come back from his injury. Alex Pagnotta will probably redshirt.”

SCARLET KNIGHTS WRESTLING 2009-10

197 “Lamar Brown is the frontrunner. This needs to be a breakout year for him. He has done things right. He understands what we want and what he needs to do. He is preparing to be in the running at NCAAs. Hopefully he can achieve his goal of making the podium at the NCAAs. It wouldn’t be disappointing if he didn’t reach that goal. Chris Orzechowski will probably back him up. Sam Kuntz will most likely redshirt.” HWT “D.J. Russo will be the starter for us. He is like having a Mariano Rivera in your lineup - a guy who closes out the lineup for you. He clinched a number of matches for us. He is a great pinner and that is six points in a dual meet. That is huge. He can handle the pressure and is very good in that situation. He has done a great job at handling his weight. I truly believe he wants to be a national champion. He is getting pushed by Sean DeDeyn who was a very good backup for us last year.”

RICHARD L. McCORMICK PRESIDENT OF THE UNIVERSITY Richard L. McCormick is the 19th president of Rutgers, The State University of New Jersey. A scholar of American political history who began his academic career on the Rutgers faculty, he returned as president in 2002 after serving as provost of the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill and president of the University of Washington. Dr. McCormick’s goal is to advance Rutgers within the top tier of American public research universities. His ambitions for the university include an enriched learning experience for every student; teaching and research focused on global human problems; diversity of students, faculty, staff, and programs; and deeper connections with the people of New Jersey. President McCormick led a major restructuring and reinvigoration of undergraduate education at Rutgers-New Brunswick, the university’s largest campus. The plan, approved in 2006, merged four undergraduate colleges into a School of Arts and Sciences, expanded access to academic programs and learning communities, and established a popular First-Year Seminar program that offers more than 100 courses – each with no more than 20 students – on a wide range of topics taught by top faculty. Other initiatives undertaken during Dr. McCormick’s tenure include: • Establishment of the first-ever universitywide alumni body, the Rutgers University Alumni Association. • The Rutgers Faculty Traveling Seminar, an annual week-long tour of New Jersey for new faculty. • The Rutgers Future Scholars Program, a pilot project to encourage minority and low-income teenagers from the university’s host cities to pursue higher education by offering mentorship and college preparation support, and the promise of free tuition to those admitted to Rutgers. • Rutgers-Camden’s first-ever doctoral-level academic program, a Ph.D. in childhood studies – the first in the nation in this emerging discipline. • Establishment of the School of Public Affairs and Administration, Rutgers-Newark’s first new school in more than three decades. Born in 1947, President McCormick earned a B.A. in American studies from Amherst College in 1969 and a Ph.D. in history from Yale University in 1976. He is married to Joan Barry McCormick, RU ’88. She is a Vice President at the Saint Peter’s Healthcare System in New Brunswick. Dr. McCormick has two children, Betsy and Michael.

TIM

PERNETTI

DIRECTOR OF INTERCOLLEGIATE ATHLETICS A lifetime New Jersey native with a strong passion for his alma mater, Tim Pernetti has come full-circle in becoming one of the nation’s youngest leaders in college athletics. A former studentathlete “On the Banks”, Pernetti was named Rutgers’ sixth Director of Intercollegiate of Athletics on February 26, 2009. He will oversee 24 men’s and women’s intercollegiate teams in New Brunswick, a larger number than fielded at most of the university’s peer institutions. The Division of Intercollegiate Athletics has 212 employees and an annual budget of approximately $56 million, roughly 3 percent of the university’s total $1.8 billion budget. Pernetti has been influential in the world of college athletics since he received a bachelor’s degree in journalism and mass media from Rutgers in 1993, and a master’s degree in communication in 1995. Prior to returning to Rutgers, Pernetti was the Executive Vice President, Content, for CBS College Sports Network. In that role, he oversaw the rights and relationship business, on-air talent, and all network programming and content on air, online and across all screens for the nation’s first company dedicated to college sports. Pernetti helped to build the CBS College Sports Network, previously CSTV, prior to its launch in 2003, and has played a critical role in establishing it as the multi-media leader in college sports programming, content, news and information. He was a recipient of the prestigious Sports Business Journal Forty under Forty Award, and the Multichannel News 40 under 40 Award both in 2008. Charged with developing relationships, acquiring rights and creating multi-platform original programming for the first ever 24-hour sports college sports network, Pernetti successfully navigated through a complicated web of media rights deals to come up with new ways to serve college sports fans. Pernetti worked closely with the NCAA and hundreds of schools in every major conference, securing over 2,500 hours of event programming each year and multiple NCAA Championships across 35 men’s and women’s sports. Pernetti was in charge of the CBS College Sports Network exclusive long-term agreements with the US Naval Academy, Mountain West Conference, Conference USA, and the Atlantic 10. Further he managed company relationships with more than 30 conferences and thousands of institutions. Pernetti remains most proud of establishing a strong relationship in women’s collegiate sports including the establishment of a women’s basketball game of the week package in 2004 with the Big East Conference. In 2006, Pernetti spearheaded a landmark multi-media partnership with the NCAA to make CBS College Sports Network the home of Division II Sports. The innovative deal effectively increased the scope and reach of NCAA Division II sports with hundreds of games now available nationally via the broadcast network and online. Pernetti’s commitment to providing greater exposure to women’s and under-served sports is evidenced by the network’s unprecedented coverage of lacrosse and volleyball, among others. He has also been at the forefront of the development and creation of the Collegiate Nationals, which crowns champions in dozens of high endurance sports, and innovative original production including CBS College Sports Network’s groundbreaking NCAA

March Madness Central, NCAA March Madness Highlights on CBS College Sports, and the WIRED franchise which gives viewers an inside look at games and events through wireless microphones on coaches during game action. 26 A BRIEF HISTORY

Rutgers, The State University of New Jersey, is one of the leading universities in the nation. The university is comprised of 27 degree-granting divisions; 10 undergraduate colleges, 11 graduate schools, and six schools offering both undergraduate and graduate degrees. Five are located in Camden, eight in Newark, and 13 in New Brunswick and one in Newark and New Brunswick. Rutgers has a unique history as a colonial college, a land-grant institution, and a state university. Chartered in 1766 as Queen's College, the eighth institution of higher learning to be founded in the colonies, the school opened its doors in New Brunswick in 1771 with a handful of first-year students. During its early years, the college developed as a classic liberal arts institution. In 1825, the name of the college was changed to honor a former trustee and Revolutionary War veteran, Colonel Henry Rutgers. Rutgers College became the land-grant college of New Jersey in 1864, resulting in the establishment of the Rutgers Scientific School, featuring departments of agriculture, engineering, and chemistry. Further expansion in the sciences came with the founding of the New Jersey Agricultural Experiment Station in 1880, the College of Engineering (now the School of Engineering) in 1914, and the College of Agriculture (now the School of Environmental and Biological Sciences) in 1921. The precursors to several other Rutgers divisions were also established during this period: the College of Pharmacy (now the Ernest Mario School of Pharmacy) in 1892, the New Jersey College for Women (now part of the School of Arts and Sciences) in 1918, and the School of Education in 1924. In 1924, Rutgers College officially became Rutgers University, a reflection of the institution’s rapidly expanding number of schools and academic programs. Early in the century, Rutgers had begun offering educational opportunities to women when the New Jersey College for Women (later Douglass College) was founded in 1918, and to adult learners when University College was established in 1934. After World War II, enrollment exploded as Rutgers admitted all qualified candidates under the GI Bill. Rutgers was becoming an institution for all people, and in 1945 and 1956, state legislative acts formally designated Rutgers as The State University of New Jersey. A flurry of expansion ensued. The University of Newark (now Rutgers–Newark) joined Rutgers in 1946, followed by the College of South Jersey (now Rutgers–Camden) in 1950. An ambitious building program added libraries, classrooms, and student housing across the three regional campuses. In 1969, Livingston College opened, providing a coeducational residential experience with a special commitment to diversity. Graduate education in the arts and sciences grew through the establishment of the Graduate School–New Brunswick, the Graduate School–Newark, and the Graduate School–Camden. Professional schools were formed to serve students in the fields of business; communication, information, and library studies; criminal justice; education; fine arts; law; management and labor relations; nursing; planning and public policy; psychology; public affairs and administration; and social work. Meanwhile, as industry and government sought partners in solving problems and advancing knowledge, the concept of the research university emerged. In 1981, Rutgers adopted a blueprint for its transformation into a major public research university. With increased support from state, federal, and corporate partners, Rutgers’ strength in research grew dramatically. In 1989, in recognition of its enhanced stature, Rutgers was invited to join the prestigious Association of American Universities, an organization comprising the top 62 research universities in North America. Today, professors and students work in more than 180 specialized research centers, unraveling mysteries in marine sciences, early childhood education, neuroscience, advanced materials, climate change, nutrition, homeland security, transportation, stem cells, and many other areas that can improve life both in New Jersey and around the world. A 2007 major reorganization of undergraduate education in New Brunswick reinvigorated the undergraduate experience for both students and faculty by combining the traditions and strengths of four undergraduate liberal arts colleges—Douglass, Livingston, Rutgers, and University—into a single School of Arts and Sciences. With 27 schools and colleges, Rutgers offers over 100 undergraduate majors and more than 100 graduate and professional degree programs. The university graduates more than 10,000 students each year, and has more than 350,000 living alumni residing in all 50 states and on six continents. Rutgers also sponsors community initiatives in all 21 New Jersey counties. Universitywide, new degree programs, research endeavors, and community outreach are in development to meet the demands of the 21st century. Today, Rutgers continues to grow, both in its facilities and in the variety and depth of its educational and research programs. The university's goals for the future include the continued provision of the highest quality education, along with the increased support of research and commitment to public service to meet the needs of society.
