HEAD COACH LOUIS LEVINE THIRD SEASON

Louis Levine, who has 12 years of coaching experience, enters his third season as the head coach of the Rutgers University gymnastics program after serving three seasons as an assistant coach on the Scarlet Knights’ staff. Rutgers excelled to new heights under Levine in 2013 after recording four of the top six team scores in program history, putting four competitors in the NCAA Regionals. The team RQS of 194.740 was the best ever by the Scarlet Knights. Under Levine, Luisa Leal, who missed most to the 2012 season, was awarded EAGL Team MVP. The junior’s highlight of the season came in the March 8 meet at Towson where she broke her own school allaround record with a 39.500 to win EAGL Gymnast of the Week. Leal placed at least tied for first in every event, notching a career-high 9.950 score on the floor exercise. The highlight of the 2013 season came on Senior Day when Rutgers notched a program-record 195.975 to win a quad meet. It shattered the previous high of 195.400 set back in 2000. In his first season as head coach, Levine led the squad to a 13-11 record. The team had its best performance of the season at the EAGL Championships, notching a score of 193.850. Under Levine, Alexis Gunzelman qualified for NCAA Regionals. She also earned a First Team All-EAGL All-Around spot and a fifth-place finish at the EAGL Championships, the highest placing ever by a Scarlet Knight at that event. With his guidance, Danielle D’Elia, Gunzelman and Jenna Zito picked up Second Team All-EAGL Floor honors, Gunzelman earned Second Team Bars and Alyssa Straub was recognized with Second Team All-Around accolades. Academically, he helped 11 gymnasts earn Scholastic All-America awards from the National Association of Collegiate Gymnastics Coaches/Women (NACGC/W).

School of Gymnastics in Roselle Park, N.J., from 2008-09. Levine spent time with the USA Gymnastics team in Daegu, South Korea where he was an assistant coach for the World University Games. He began his coaching career at his alma mater, the University of Michigan, where he served three seasons as an assistant coach and recruiting coordinator from 2002-04. Levine oversaw all aspects of Michigan’s recruiting operations and helped organize the program’s operating budget. During his time at Michigan, he served on the planning committee for the program’s freshman student-athlete orientation program, helping mentor newcomers. While a member of the Wolverines’ staff, he coached 2003 NCAA Vault Champion Andrew DiGiore. He has coached several Junior National Team and Senior National Team members and a Junior National Champion in the All-Around. Levine competed on the vault during his time at Michigan where he helped guide the Wolverines to a pair of Big Ten titles in 1999 and 2000 and the 1999 NCAA Championship. He was a two-time recipient of the Coaches Appreciation Award. Levine received his Bachelor of Arts degree from the University of Michigan in 2002 and master’s degree from the American InterContinental University Business School in 2006. A decorated gymnast, Levine attended Columbia High School in Maplewood, N.J. He currently resides in nearby Springfield, N.J.

In his three prior seasons on the Rutgers staff, the Scarlet Knights achieved great success. The 2011 squad established a school-record for victories in a season with a 19-8 overall mark and enjoyed its then-highest-ever finish and score (fifth and 193.625) in the East Atlantic Gymnastics League (EAGL) Championships. Three gymnasts – D’Elia, Zito and Leal – earned a berth in the NCAA Regionals, marking the program’s first representation in the regionals since 2007. Levine helped coach three gymnasts to All-EAGL honors, including Leal who was named the EAGL Rookie of the Year in her first season “On the Banks.”

As a team, the Scarlet Knights improved their regional qualifying score to 194.740, improving from last year’s score of 194.350. Floor exercise proved to be the most successful event of the season, with RU posting a 49.005 RQS and breaking the school record at 49.250. The record was also broken on the vault at 49.100. The uneven bars were an event that the Scarlet Knights improved most in by notching the best mark at the EAGL Championships (48.900).

COACHING STAFF ASSISTANT COACHES/SUPPOR T STAFF UMME SALIM-BEAS LEY ASSISTANT COACH Umme Salim-Beasley enters her third season as an assistant coach at Rutgers. “Umme’s tireless work ethic and gymnastics knowledge has been a great asset in the gym and on the recruiting front,” said head coach Louis Levine. “Her vast experience as a coach and gymnast enable her to step into any situation and thrive.” Salim-Beasley brings impressive credentials to Rutgers, having competed collegiately at West Virginia, an East Atlantic Gymnastics League (EAGL) member, from 1995 to 1998. A native of Pasadena, Md., she was a two-time national qualifier at Hill’s Gymnastic Training Center in Gaithersburg, Md., before earning a full scholarship to West Virginia University. Making an impact right away, Salim-Beasley was named Atlantic 10 Rookie of the Year as a freshman and earned spots on the All-EAGL First Team in all-around, bars and beam her sophomore and junior seasons. She finished off her career by being named the EAGL Gymnast of the Year and Most Outstanding Senior Gymnast in her final season in Morgantown in addition to winning the EAGL all-around, bar and beam titles that year. Her accomplishments also ranked her as the fifth-best gymnast in the country and as a finalist for the AAI Award in 1998. After graduating from West Virginia with a B.A. in early childhood education, she went into coaching, starting as an assistant coach at the University of Pennsylvania in 1999. During her one season there, the team won the Ivy League Championships in addition to an undefeated regular season, breaking team records in every event.

A native of Lake Oswego, Ore., Bolen earned a Bachelor’s of Science in Exercise and Sport Science, with a minor in Psychology in 2009 from OSU. She was a three-time Pac-10 All-Academic selection and earned honors as a Scholastic All-American from the National Association of Collegiate Gymnastics Coaches (NACGC).

K ATH Y GALLI ATHLETIC TRAINER Kathy Galli enters her 27th year as an athletic trainer with collegiate gymnastics, her 24th with the Scarlet Knights. Galli has also worked with the crew program during her 20-plus years “On the Banks.” She is a 1983 University of Rhode Island graduate, having earned a Bachelor of Science in Physical Education with an emphasis in Athletic Training. In 1984, she received her Master of Science in Athletic Training from the University of Arizona and has been NATA certified since. In the past, Galli has also worked with the Scarlet Knights’ swimming, volleyball and women’s lacrosse programs. She spent two years researching Biomechanics with the physicians at University Orthopedics in New Brunswick and she also taught Adaptive Physical Education at a private special education school. Kathy grew up in Rhode Island but has remained in New Jersey since being hired by Rutgers in 1984. She now resides in Millstone with her husband Bob (Rutgers, ’84) and their two children Kevin and Caitlin.

Salim-Beasley returned to Morgantown as a volunteer assistant coach during the 2006-07 season. For three years, she coached the Severna Park High School gymnastics team to two county championships, including an undefeated regular season in her first year. Additionally, she coached two different gymnasts to all-around championships. Salim-Beasley also was a teacher at Eagle Cove School in Pasadena, Md., for four years and is working towards a M.A. in Education from West Virginia University.

Bolen was a standout gymnast at the collegiate level. She came to New Brunswick after spending two years as a volunteer assistant coach at her alma mater, Oregon State. A four-year letterwinner for the Beavers, she started as a walk-on, earning a scholarship by the end of her freshman year to eventually being named a captain as a junior. Bolen helped advance her team to the NCAA National Championships four times during her career. During her two years as a volunteer assistant coach in Corvallis, Bolen assisted the team with its strength and conditioning assignments, providing assistance with coaching on all four events with an emphasis on the balance beam. The team qualified for the NCAA National Championships both seasons she was on staff, making it six straight seasons to the national level as a gymnast and coach.

2014 SEASON OUTLOOK Coming off a record-breaking season, Rutgers gymnastics looks to continue its ascent in 2014. Recording four of the top six team scores in school history last year, including a 195.975 mark on Senior Day, the Scarlet Knights are primed to take the next step with a wealth of depth in all four events. “Last year we proved to ourselves that we could be that good,” said third-year head coach Louis Levine. “In the last five years, we have had this huge rise in what we have been able to do. This year we are going in knowing we are that good, which is half the battle.” Even though Rutgers sent four individuals to the NCAA Regionals, the Scarlet Knights narrowly missed qualifying as a team after sitting on the bubble down the stretch with a 194.740 RQS (regional qualifying score). That has proven to be the goal through the offseason. “We’ve talked about hitting the ground running this season and not waiting until the end to push for NCAA Regionals,” Levine said. “If we put up the scores we are capable of from the start, everything will take care of itself.”

SCHEDULE

Mixing 14 letterwinners with four freshmen, the Scarlet Knights will be led by their three captains this season – redshirt senior Jenna Zito, senior Alexis Gunzelman and redshirt junior Luisa Leal. All three have earned individual bids to the NCAA Regionals during their careers. “These three are probably the most experienced competitors on our team,” Levine said. “They’ve been through the ups and downs so we really thought they were a good representation of what we want to be. The three girls have strengths that allow them to come together to be an amazing set of leaders.” A two-time NCAA qualifier, Gunzelman was named EAGL First Team All-Uneven Bars in the 2013 season. Throughout her junior year, she set several personal career records, including a 9.825 on vault and a 9.850 on the uneven bars, while serving as a captain. Returning as the EAGL Team MVP and nearly qualifying for the NCAA Nationals, Leal was named EAGL First Team All-Vault for the second straight year. Leal recorded a school record 39.500 allaround score during a meet at Towson.

The 2014 schedule features four home meets at the Livingston Recreation Center and seven away contests that lead up to the East Atlantic Gymnastics League Championships March 22. The year begins Jan. 11 with New Hampshire at home before the squad travels to Ohio for two meets in three days at Kent State and Ohio State.

Zito returns as a captain once again after competing in only two meets last year due to injury. The redshirt senior was named to the National Association of Collegiate Gymnastics Coaches for Women Academic All-America team, recording a 9.825 in both floor exercise appearances in the 2013 season. She went to the NCAAs in 2011.

“We start off right away with three tough meets that are quickly going to let us know where we are,” Levine said. “Our goal is to qualify for NCAAs as a team and we want to be able to put up high scores from the beginning.”

With capacity crowds filling the Livingston Recreation Center in recent years, the Scarlet Knights look to continue their success at home. “Every home meet is a great experience for the kids and gives them a chance to show off for the fans,” Levine said. “There have been some big crowds over the years at the Livingston Gym and we look forward to seeing great environments once again this season.”

CAP TAINS

Rutgers added four freshmen to its roster that are pushing immediately for spots in the lineup – April Baker, Claire Jones, Taylor Le Moal and Charly Santagado. All bring extensive gymnastics experience to the table, having competed at the regional and national level. “The newcomers have all acclimated themselves well to the collegiate level throughout the fall semester,” Levine said. “They all will be in contention to see time right away.” After winning the Most Improved Award for her hard work last season, sophomore Aziza Day looks to make her meet debut in 2014.

With the anticipated amount of depth across the board, Levine will have options when he fills out his lineup each week. Gunzelman and Leal both competed all-around in the final six regular season meets before doing the same that the NCAA Regionals. Senior Alyssa Straub also went all-around in three meets in 2013.

Junior Anastasia Halbig returns after missing time due to injury last year, but posted a 9.715 RQS in 11 meets in beam as a freshman.

“I anticipate Luisa and Alexis going all-around, but there are definitely others who could as well,” Levine said. “The conditioning of the team is great and it is about finding the right group for each event. Depth in all events will only continue to raise the level of competition to make the lineup.”

VAULT The Scarlet Knights re-wrote the record book on the vault in 2013, recording the top three scores in school history on the way to a 48.845 RQS. Both Leal and sophomore Jenna Williams earned EAGL First Team All-Vault to help set those mark. Leal also set the program record with a 9.925 routine last year. “We’ve added the most depth at vault,” Levine said. “There could be some freshmen in the lineup here and it is great to have Jenna Zito back. Being nine to 10 deep, everyone will be pushing each other every week.” Straub proved to be effective once again on vault, scoring a 9.875 in the event to spark the lineup. Sophomores Danielle Verdon and Nicolette Wilson saw extensive action last season in the event as rookies and look to continue to make an impact, while junior Sara Skammer competed on vault 10 times.

UNEVEN BARS Rutgers managed to raise its bars RQS to a 48.775 last season, with both Williams and Gunzelman returning as EAGL First Team All-Uneven Bars honorees. Williams earned EAGL Rookie of the Week two times in 2013. “Bars have always been a make or break event for us. Last year it was our most improved and we have the skills to put up huge scores there this season. Everyone has been pushing hard to refine their routine.” After missing her freshman season, junior Emma Hoffman returned last year to post over a 9.6 eight times. Senior Alexandria Ivol brings back experience to the event and had a career-high 9.725 as a junior.

FLOOR EXERCISE The floor exercise has statistically been the strength of Rutgers over the years, with this season restocking the lineup after losing two regular contributors. The team scored a programrecord 49.250 last season to highlight 2013. In addition, Leal scored a careerbest 9.950 at Towson, as one judge deemed her routine to be a perfect 10. “This year is a new beginning in floor, having lost some seniors from the lineup,” Levine said. “We have the ability to keep up the high scores here, having some depth. The routines are there to keep up the strong reputation of the past in this event.” Verdon and classmate Katie Stebick were both solid contributors on floor exercise last year, as the two saw regular action to help bump up the score.

OUTLOOK Building off an historical 2013 season, Rutgers carried the momentum through the offseason to put itself in position to build off that in 2014. With a mixture of experience and youth, the depth in each event will push each gymnast to improve to stay in the lineup. A fast start will be key to working towards a team bid the NCAA Regionals. “We’re in a good place right now,” Levine said. “The team has worked really hard to get into great shape for season. We just have to put some finishing touches on the routines and we’ll be ready to go. “Our goal this year is to get better as the season moves on, while performing at a high level right from the start. We believe we can stay in the 194 to 196 range.”

BALANCE BEAM Sophomore Claudia Salinas emerged last season as a contender on the balance beam, earning EAGL First Team All-Balance Beam last season. She qualified for the NCAA Regionals and scored at least a 9.7 six different times in the event. The team went as high as 48.850 – third-best in school history – on the way to helping set the team mark. “Beam is about perfecting the little things in the routine,” Levine said. “We have some strong performers, but they need to show confidence and focus in what they are doing. The depth we have is very capable of big scores, but they need to bring that into the

reached new heights in 2013 after recording four of the top six team scores in program history, putting four competitors in the NCAA Regionals. The team RQS of 194.740 was the best ever by the Scarlet Knights. “When looking back at the season, the improvements that were made from last year to this year were tremendous,” second-year head coach Louis Levine said. “We were able to step up the level and execution of our routines and put up some big scores. That was what we had been striving for and now we want to keep pushing that on an even more consistent basis. I know we haven’t reached our topping-out point.” The highlight of the season came on Senior Day when Rutgers notched a program-record 195.975 to win a quad meet. It shattered the previous high of 195.400 set back in 2000. “It’s pretty amazing, this is what we have been pushing for,” Levine said after the meet. “We have to keep striving to get better and better but I do not want to downplay this moment. We have built towards this all season, knowing we were capable of this type of performance.” Following the meet, the program recognized a group of seniors who helped boost the standards of the Rutgers gymnastics program and provided a superb example of what being a student-athlete truly means: Danielle D’Elia (Colts Neck, N.J.), Nicole Romano (Livingston, N.J.), Emma-Rose Trentacosti (Ridgefield Park, N.J.), Jayne Jeffreys (Jackson, N.J.) and Jenna Zito (Rockaway, N.J.). “They set the standard of what we wanted of hard work and consistency from practice to practice in their effort and their outcome,” Levine said. “They came in to a much different team than where we are now. They came into a struggling team and they were a major reason for the success this year. We will miss them. Hopefully they’ll still come around and we’ll see them throughout the year. They set the tone and hopefully the underclassmen will step it up to take their place in leadership.” Numerous memorable individual performances helped RU reach high marks throughout the season, with D’Elia, junior Luisa Leal (Cali Columbia), junior Alexis Gunzelman (Tabernacle, N.J.), freshman Claudia Salinas (Allendale, N.J.) and freshman Jenna Williams (Bordentown, N.J.) all earning All-EAGL honors. After missing most of the 2012 season, Leal returned without missing a beat to earn EAGL Team MVP. The junior’s highlight of the season came in the March 8 meet at Towson where she broke her own school all-around record with a 39.500 to win EAGL Gymnast of the Week. Leal placed at least tied for first in every event, notching a career-high 9.950 score on the floor exercise. One of the judges deemed the routine a perfect 10, as it was the highest RU score in any event on the season. “Some of the performances that stick out to me were the 9.9s and Luisa breaking the all-around mark at Towson,” Levine said. “The girls worked really hard all season and we had more depth than ever to make practices competitive to make the lineup. It was great to see the different people step up and contribute.” Floor exercise proved to be the most successful event of the season, with RU posting a 49.005 RQS and breaking the school record at 49.250. The record was also broken on the vault at 49.100 in the Senior Day meet. The

uneven bars were an event that the Scarlet Knights improved most in by notching the best mark at the EAGL Championships (48.900). Rounding out, the balance beam progressed as the year went on, as RU brought in an RQS of 48.625. The collection of quality scores put the team on the bubble of qualifying for the NCAA Regionals, but it was not meant to be in 2013. “It just means we have to be ready sooner,” Levine said of just missing out. “We have to come in in January from the start and put scores up right away. Unfortunately, we dealt with some injuries early on, but that’s no excuse. We have to have the depth ready to go and be ready to push right from the start. We ran out of time this year. I think we were better than some of the teams that were ranked ahead of us but they were more consistent than we were.” The season started off with the annual meet against New Hampshire before RU returned home to host a pair of meets at the Livingston Recreation Center. All four home meets were capacity crowds, with spectators lining the walls of the gym to stand and watch. “We showed a lot this year about gymnastics and how much of a spectator sport it can be. People came and we really pushed to get bigger crowds to make it a fun event,” Levine said. “It always helps to perform in front of a big crowd and we’ll continue to get as many people as we can fit in this place and keep the entertainment level up as well.” A total of seven road meets were also on the schedule, with a team record 195.550 away score at Towson. The Scarlet Knights also opened up the eyes of perennial regional contenders West Virginia and Maryland with a 195.050 midway through the season at the Comcast Center. The annual EAGL Championships were held at the University of North Carolina, as RU brought in the best uneven bars mark in the meet on the way to a 193.925. That was the best score the team has ever had in that meet, which brings together eight competitive teams. That led to Gunzelman, Leal, Salinas and Williams all earning bids to the NCAA Regionals. It was the biggest RU contingent at that level since 2004. Leal led the way with a 39.175 all-around score, coming just 0.025 points from qualifying for the NCAA Nationals. Having taken a giant step forward this season, Rutgers will look to continue its upward trend in the coming years. “Our next step is to make NCAA Regionals as a team and to have consistent week-to-week performances and I think that takes care of the making the postseason,” Levine said. “If all the girls can perform with confidence and they are hitting their routines day in and day out, then the scores are going to be there. We have been able to bring in talent and build depth to provide competition in practice. That pushes everyone to not just concern themselves with hitting their routine, but to clean up the little things to make it better.” Even with a litany of highlights on both the team and personal level, the program is still on the rise and ready to contend at the national level. The contributions of the five departing gymnasts will be missed, but a solid foundation was laid in 2013 for future success for the Rutgers gymnastics program.

FACILITIES & ENVIRONMENT RUTGERS GYMNASTICS MEDIA GUIDE

LIVINGSTON RECREATION CENTER Rutgers Gymnastics entered a new home in 2001 with the completion of the training and competition areas at the Livingston Recreation Center.

The training area is set up with two uneven bars, four beams, and a full-size floor for practice. The gymnasium, which has served as a recreation facility for several years, has undergone an internal facelift to accommodate a new, 6,000 square-foot gymnastics practice facility with state-of-the-art training equipment. The Scarlet Knights have benefited from newly-designed enhancements to its facility in 2008 which provided optimal training conditions for the program. A brand new surface for the floor exercise and a newly-added in-ground tumbling pit has opened up the facilityâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s layout and made it more conducive for training. New bleachers were erected in the facility which presents a pleasant experience for fans on the day of a meet. The new facility allows the Scarlet Knights to train to their full potential, as well as helps attract some of the top gymnastics recruits in the country.

The indoor facility consists of a multi-court basketball area with a synthetic Mondo floor (which can be converted to one indoor soccer area, five volleyball courts, or a combination of basketball, floor hockey, and volleyball), locker rooms for both men and women with saunas in each, a mirrored Multi-Purpose room for classes or practice, conference room, and offices. A 3,000 square foot Fitness Center offers a variety of cardiovascular equipment (bikes, rowers, treadmills, etc.), as well as assorted weight machines (Paramount and Nautilus) and free weights. Classes are offered during the academic year in aerobics/step, weight training, martial arts, tennis, and other activities.

GYMNASTICS SCORING GUIDE In collegiate team competition, six gymnasts perform in each of four events (vault, uneven parallel bars, balance beam, and floor exercise). The five best individual scores per event comprise the cumulative team total. Collegiate competition requires at least two judges to evaluate the score of an athlete’s performance. The scores are averaged to arrive at a final mark. A perfect team score is 200, with top collegiate scores ranging between 190.00 and 197.00. Optional routines, choreographed by the gymnast to express herself through the skills she may perform best, are based on a score of 9.6 with an additional four-tenths (.4) for completing more difficult skills and/or combinations. VAULT The vaulting event requires speed, quickness and explosive power. Vaults are divided into four categories: handsprings, forward saltos, backward saltos and vaults from a roundoff. Each of these vaults is assigned a vault of up to 10.0. Deductions are taken from the starting value of the vault. Basis for deductions stems from technical errors in the areas of preflight (approach to the horse), repulsion (the rise of the horse), and the afterflight (distance and height from the horse). In 2001, the rules were modified so that each gymnast would be permitted to perform one vault for scoring purposes. This is a change from previous seasons, where gymnastics could perform two of the same or two different vaults, and were awarded the higher of the two scores. Due to safety concerns, in 2003 the design of the vault horse was been changed. It now has a larger top, allowing thegymnast more room to place her hands on the horse. It is referred to as the “tongue”, since that is what the new shape resembles.

U NEVE N BARS A complete routine on the uneven bars comprises some 10 to 15 moves, consisting mainly of swinging and suspension skills utilizing both bars with many regrasps. A change of direction is required in the routine, while pauses for concentration, extra swings and uncharacteristic elements are to be avoided. The gymnast must change bars at least two times, and must have at least two flight elements. As mentioned above under scoring, bonus parts worth up to 0.40 can be awarded for completing difficult skills. On this event, some of the bonus

moves include somersaulting release moves, difficult pirouette work, and somersaulting mounts.

BALAN CE B EAM The routine must be composed of elements from the following groups: tumbling with and without flight; strength; and dance (i.e. turns, leaps, and body waves). Special requirements on the balance beam are a tumbling series, a leap or a large jump, a full turn and a series of skills combining dance and acrobatics. The routine must last between 1:10 and 1:30. Performing on the beam requires precise movement and intense concentration, as each ‘wobble’ results in a deduction. Elements performed on the beam that receive bonus points are somersaulting mounts, double-back dismounts, double turns, one-arm handstands, and jumps showing maximum flexibility.

F LO O R EX ER CI S E Floor exercise is a combination of dance, tumbling and acrobatics performed to music. Creative and dynamic changes in rhythm and energy levels help to create an exciting routine where composition plays an important role. The exercise must last between 1:10 and 1:30. A routine consists of three tumbling “passes” and the gymnast must balance the difficulty of both her tumbling skills and dance skills and should finish the routine as strongly as it was started. Bonus points are awarded on this event for more than two twists in the same somersault, a double-back preceded by a front or backsomersault, a triple turn, and certain unique dance elements. Specific deductions are taken for stepping off the mat and for being out of sync with the music.

ROBERT L. BARCHI is the 20th president of Rutgers, The State University of New Jersey. Since beginning his tenure on September 1, 2012, President Barchi has been overseeing preparations for integrating into Rutgers most units of the University of Medicine and Dentistry of New Jersey, as outlined in the recently adopted New Jersey Medical and Health Sciences Education Restructuring Act. He has begun work on a university strategic plan (the first in more than 15 years) and was part of a statewide coalition of university, business, and labor leaders urging voter support of a $750 million bond act for higher education construction, which was approved by a wide margin in November. President Barchi announced on November 20, 2012 that all intercollegiate athletic teams on Rutgers’ New Brunswick campus will join the Big Ten Conference at a date to be determined.

wide entity that he expanded to become the focus for Penn’s growth in neuroscience, encompassing the intellectual activities of more than 120 faculty members. Dr. Barchi founded the Department of Neuroscience at Penn and served as its first chair; he also served as chair of the Department of Neurology. He was named the Fairhill Professor in 2002, a position that he still holds in emeritus status.

From 2004 to 2012, Dr. Barchi served as president of Thomas Jefferson University in Philadelphia, nationally regarded as a top university dedicated to health sciences education and research. Prior to Jefferson, he was provost and chief academic officer of the University of Pennsylvania, an Ivy League institution founded in 1740. There, he had responsibility for Penn’s 12 schools, all academic programs, athletics, students, and faculty. Dr. Barchi was born in Philadelphia but spent his formative years not far from Rutgers in Westfield, N.J. He received his B.S. and M.S. degrees from Georgetown University, and Ph.D. and M.D. degrees from the University of Pennsylvania. He completed specialty training at the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania and holds board certification in neurology. Throughout his career, Dr. Barchi has been active as a teacher and as an NIH-funded researcher in the fields of neuroscience and neurology, and he has published extensively in his field. He was elected to the Institute of Medicine of the National Academy of Sciences in recognition of his pioneering research on the structure and function of voltage-gated ion channels in nerve and muscle, and on the role these critical molecules can play in human disease. He was also elected to the American Society for Clinical Investigation and the Association of American Physicians and named a fellow of the American Association for the Advancement of Science, the American Neurological Association, and the American Academy of Neurology. In 1972, Dr. Barchi began his academic career as a faculty member at Penn. Within a decade, he rose to become the David Mahoney Professor of Neurological Sciences. Between 1983 and 1996, he served as director of the Mahoney Institute of Neurological Sciences—an interdisciplinary, university-

The University of Pennsylvania named Dr. Barchi as its provost and chief academic officer in 1999, and he served in this capacity until 2004. As provost, Dr. Barchi had responsibility for the university’s 12 schools and their academic programs and budgets and Penn’s intercollegiate athletics program, as well as for Penn’s students and faculty. During his tenure, he worked with president Judith Rodin to reassert the primacy of the academic mission in the direction of the university. He recruited new leadership to nine of the 12 schools at Penn and established a number of universitywide interdisciplinary educational and research institutes. He also led the university through a comprehensive strategic planning process. As president of Thomas Jefferson University, Dr. Barchi oversaw a period of tremendous growth. The university established three new schools—including the Jefferson School of Pharmacy, which graduated its first class in May 2012, and the Jefferson School of Population Health, the only school in the nation to offer a master’s degree in chronic care management. Overall student enrollment increased by 51 percent and annual degrees awarded rose by 54 percent. Dr. Barchi also expanded the reach of the campus, inaugurating the Partnership in Healthcare Education, an academic affiliation with the University of Delaware that offers dual-degree programs between the two institutions. Other accomplishments at Jefferson include successful implementation of an ambitious strategic plan that integrated the university’s clinical, education, and research missions; a comprehensive facilities master plan that supports those missions; and a major fundraising campaign that provides the resources necessary for success. During Dr. Barchi’s tenure, Jefferson established 22 new endowed professorships and 50 endowed scholarships, helping to ensure a healthy and diverse community of faculty and students. The university surpassed

$300 million in fundraising under his leadership, twice the amount raised during the preceding eight-year period. During his presidency, Dr. Barchi also oversaw the transformation of Jefferson’s urban environment into a vibrant university campus. A coordinated construction program, coupled with improved landscape design and signage, helped provide visitors and the Jefferson community a sense of place and connectedness to the compact urban campus in the heart of the city’s historic district. Dr. Barchi is married to Francis Harper Barchi, a tenure-track faculty member of the Rutgers School of Social Work. Before coming to Rutgers, she was a senior fellow in the Center for Bioethics at the University of Pennsylvania, where she was engaged in education and research activities relating to international research ethics. Francis Barchi holds a Ph.D. in social welfare, a master’s in bioethics, and a master’s in nonprofit leadership from the University of Pennsylvania, as well as a bachelor’s degree from Smith College. She is the former executive vice president of the Dana Foundation in New York, a post she assumed following a 20-year span as president of her own company, which provided protocol and strategic communication services for international clients. Francis Barchi’s research focuses on the social and behavioral factors that influence women’s health in southern Africa. In 2009, she completed the first major quantitative study on women’s autonomy and gender-based violence in Botswana, and she is the principal investigator on a study in that country examining the extent to which women’s understanding of HPV and cervical cancer influences their decision-making about prevention and treatment. She is currently part of a team responsible for ethics training of health professionals in Botswana, Tanzania, and Guatemala. As an avocation, President Barchi is an expert in the history and mechanical development of clocks and watches. In addition to collecting and conserving examples of these timepieces from the 17th and 18th centuries, he designs and constructs his own precision clocks in his basement machine shop. The Barchis, who have four adult children and one young dog, spend their leisure time at their home in coastal Maine where they are avid boaters and hikers.

Hermann spent 15 years at Louisville as the Cardinals built one of the nation’s most competitive athletic programs across the board. Following a national search, Hermann was selected from a pool of 63 candidates. She is the first woman to serve in this capacity at Rutgers and will become the second female athletic director in Big Ten history.

Hermann served in a supervisory capacity of U of L athletics as the university garnered the 2013 NCAA men’s basketball national championship; two BCS Bowl wins; two NCAA women’s basketball national championship appearances (2013 and 2009) and one NCAA men’s soccer College Cup national championship appearance (2010). Since joining the BIG EAST in 2005, the Cardinals claimed 64 conference titles.

Prior to that she served as head women’s volleyball coach at the University of Tennessee for six seasons. Under her watch, the Lady Vols advanced to the NCAA Tournament for the first time in a decade. Hermann is immediate past president of the National Association of Collegiate Women Athletics Administrators. She is the former chair of the NCAA Division I Women’s Volleyball Committee. Hermann has served on numerous boards, including the Frazier Rehab Institute, the Louisville Sports Commission and the Kentucky Sports Commission.
