WelcomeR

SO

Remember the first time you heard an orchestra, or a particular song? What was it that spoke to you, made you connect? Live music has the incredible power to inspire us, to make us more human, to make us re-connect. This is the journey and through music and all of the arts, we are invited to live our lives more fully and with more sensitivity. A few years ago our RSO & Chorus performed a special concert for Virginia on the steps of the capitol building in Richmond. We were chosen to perform for the Sesquicentennial anniversary, the birth and debut of our new Virginia state song, with a program of patriotic music that has shaped our commonwealth and our nation. We will expand on that stirring program and have the beloved Dr. “Bud” Robertson narrate for us in this concert presentation of America the Beautiful -right here in Roanoke! Our Masterworks season opens with a great new Spanish guitar concerto, written and performed with orchestra by Juan Nicolau. Dvorak’s 8th Symphony rounds out this Opening Night in a colorful evening of Spanish and Bohemian masterworks. In November, we perform Beethoven’s Symphony No. 7 along with the debut our special guest Russian-born pianist Natasha Paremski in a debut with Shostakovich’s Piano Concerto No. 2. RSO concertmaster Akemi Takayama and New York Philharmonic’s Rebecca Young join forces in Mozart’s Sinfonia Concertante in our Valentine’s program including the beautiful Fantasia on a Theme by Thomas Tallis by Vaughn Williams. Finally, I’m proud to lead the orchestra and chorus in our Russian Fireworks program of Tchaikovsky’s beloved Romeo & Juliet Fantasy-Overture, the stirring 1812 Overture, Borodin’s The Steppes of Central Asia and more. Picnic at the Pops will feature the iconic to modern songs from Broadway A to Z: ABBA to Les Miz, our the largest and most anticipated Holiday Pops Spectacular in December, and a spring “RSO Rocks” presentation of Never Break the Chain: The Music of Fleetwood Mac -- all with your RSO! Our Destination programs take us through the traditions of Bluegrass-inspired music of Roanoke’s own Jeff Midkiff, chamber concert in the vibrant sanctuary of St. Andrew’s Church, and an inspiring and intimate concert at the Taubman Museum of Art. I hope you will join us as often as you can.

David Stewart Wiley, Music Director Thriving under David Stewart Wiley’s energetic and inspiring leadership since 1996, the RSO has experienced remarkable artistic growth, expansion, and innovation. A renowned talent, Wiley has not only taken the RSO to new artistic heights, but has conducted such distinguished symphonies as Atlanta, Buffalo, Cincinnati, San Francisco, Milwaukee, Indianapolis, Minnesota, St. Louis, Oregon, Honolulu, Utah, and others. This inspiring Maestro and world traveler is also an engaged and active community partner, having been named “Citizen of the Year” in Roanoke for his outstanding service and outreach.
