Welcome
Music has a unique ability to allow us to feel part of a community; it can give us a sense of belonging, to help us feel at home. We want everyone who attends RSNO performances to feel part of our community. Everybody is welcome, whether you hear us in the Glasgow Royal Concert Hall or meet us in intimate spaces in towns and villages around the country. This Season we explore how music Feels Like Home
Some of the music you’ll hear this Season embodies a composer’s homeland. Whilst Vaughan Williams painted an atmospheric portrait of London in his Second Symphony, Mahler, who grew up in a tavern in Bohemia, filled his First Symphony with folk songs, country dances and the sounds of nature from his childhood.
I’m delighted to welcome singers and musicians from the Royal Conservatoire of Scotland to join us for a very special performance of Ravel’s exquisite L’enfant et les sortilèges. Through this work we explore the feeling of home in the domestic sense. Set within a French house and garden, a young child goes on a wild rampage around his home, wrecking the furniture and tormenting the garden animals. He eventually returns to his mother having learned both wisdom and empathy.
We’ll play music where composers evoke their homelands from which they are far
away, whether through emigration or exile. Andrzej Panufnik’s Sinfonia Sacra was written in his adopted home of the UK after he had escaped from communist Poland. Much of Rachmaninov’s music has a sense of melancholy and yearning for home as he spent many years in exile from his native Russia after the Revolution. We’ll perform Rachmaninov’s Third Symphony, which one critic commented should have been called ‘Memories of Russia’.
And of course, as Scotland’s National Orchestra, we can’t forget our home! Scottish mezzo-soprano Karen Cargill performs Sir James MacMillan’s Three Scottish Songs and we enjoy an international composer’s view of Scotland with Mendelssohn’s The Hebrides Overture. The Scottish poet Robert Louis Stevenson’s Songs of Travel, set by Vaughan Williams, also uniquely captures what it means to travel away from home, explore the world, and then return to your roots.
No matter where you’re from, we welcome you to enjoy a Season filled with wonderful music. We’d love to hear what music makes you feel at home. Please email us at info@rsno.org.uk or use the hashtag #FeelsLikeHome on social media.

Beauty, passion and the miracles of nature
– there’s no tale that an orchestra can’t tell, and there’s definitely no symphony quite like Tchaikovsky’s shattering Fourth. Raw tragedy, roof-raising triumph: it’s explosive stuff, so guest conductor Kristiina Poska begins with something a little more tranquil. Arvo Pärt’s haunting Cantus is the perfect complement to a wonderful new work from Elena Langer, inspired by the songs of birds and the nature poetry of Glyn Maxwell. If you caught Ethan Loch’s performance with the RSNO last Season or in the final of BBC Young Musician 2022, you’ll already know that there’s something magical about this young Scottish pianist. And if you didn’t, what better way to discover him than in Gershwin’s fabulous Rhapsody in Blue? The enchantment doesn’t stop there, as Music Director Thomas Søndergård conjures up the wizardry of The Sorcerer’s Apprentice and introduces the dancing crockery and singing squirrels of Ravel’s ravishing mini-opera. Sir Stephen Hough: a pianist whose effortless brilliance at the keyboard has been described as little short of genius. Put them together and sparks will fly – whether in Rachmaninov’s showstopping concerto, Ravel’s sumptuous dream waltz or Vaughan Williams’ glorious technicolour portrait of a great city in all its bustling, glittering life. The Orchestral Qawwali Project joins the musicians of the RSNO and RSNO Chorus for a special one-off show. Created and led by critically acclaimed composer Rushil Ranjan and renowned singer Abi Sampa, the project breathes new life into centuries-old traditions, reframing the spiritual rapture of Sufi music through Rushil’s rich orchestral scores, blending Western classical with South Asian music and Indian classical dance. Within just three years of its founding, the ensemble has performed several sell-out shows, including the Royal Albert Hall in 2024, following which the RAH appointed Rushil and Abi as its new Associate Artists.

Sat 16 May 2026: 7.30pm
Franghiz Ali-Zadeh Nagillar
Elgar Violin Concerto
Stravinsky The Firebird
Kirill Karabits Conductor
Nicola Benedetti Violin
Scotland’s best-loved classical violinist, Nicola Benedetti, joins Scotland’s National Orchestra for Elgar’s lyrical Violin Concerto. Her performance is the big, passionate heart of a concert that begins with a garland of musical fairy tales from Azerbaijan (a special favourite of conductor Kirill Karabits) and ends amid the dark magic and glittering romance of Stravinsky’s great ballet The Firebird. Music doesn’t get more colourful.

There’s a good reason why Elgar’s Cello Concerto is a classic: deep emotions surge beneath its haunted surface and if anyone can uncover them it’s our soloist, the remarkable Kian Soltani. Today, it’s just one stage on an emotional odyssey devised by our Principal Guest Conductor Patrick Hahn: a voyage that embraces the infinite longing of George Crumb and Richard Wagner, the volcanic grief of Benjamin Britten, and Scriabin’s final, multicoloured starburst of pure sonic bliss. Join us and be transported.

With its unforgettable Ode to Joy, Beethoven’s Ninth Symphony is always a special occasion – a glorious way to end any concert season. Tonight, Principal Guest Conductor Patrick Hahn makes it the climax of a very special (and distinctly Scottish) celebration; starting with Mendelssohn’s Hebridean journey and pausing for a song or three with Sir James MacMillan and Scottish star, mezzo-soprano Karen Cargill. Today, three of the RSNO’s string players come together for an encounter with one of music’s most beautiful minds. If symphonies are like big-screen blockbusters, chamber music is like a composer’s personal diary: thoughts and feelings that are too special to share with just anyone. Emotions run deep and strong in Brahms’ haunting Horn Trio, written as he mourned the death of his mother. But in Beethoven’s youthful Quintet Op16, they simply bubble and dance with glee. A handpicked team of RSNO players join the phenomenal Felix Klieser to share their secrets today – and you get to listen in.

Now British composer James Burton has set its message to music. It’s a tuneful celebration of a vanishing natural world, created for young voices and sung today by the RSNO’s inspirational Youth Chorus. Discover a newly minted classic this lunchtime.

‘A narrative of the soul’ was how one critic described a recent Glasgow performance by Ethan Loch, and there’s no question that this young Scottish pianist (who has become a nationwide star since his triumph in BBC Young Musician in 2022) has something very special to say. Today, he lavishes all his artistry on Debussy’s shimmering musical pictures and premieres a new creation of his own: a ‘dance drama’ inspired by the sea and brought to life by ballet dancer
