1783. 1933 Goudey #144 Babe Ruth PSA PR 1. Graded by PSA PR

1. Though the most common of the four Babe Ruth baseball cards in the 1933 Goudey set, the #144 Ruth card is the only one to offer a full-bodied image: the ‘Sultan of Swat’ is shown taking a mighty hack in his New York Yankees pinstripes. The green text on the reverse makes note of his heroic feats at the plate: “Holds big league home run record, 60, made in 1927. Led American League in batting in 1924. Home Run Baseball. Historic official Spalding National League (Feeney) home run baseball hit by Hank Aaron off of Cincinnati Reds pitcher Wayne Simpson on August 6, 1972. The 4th inning blast marked the 660th home run of Aaron’s legendary career and established a new MLB record for the most homers hit by a player for a single franchise, a feat that broke Babe Ruth’s record of 659 with the New York Yankees. Incidentally, the home run would not be the last he would hit that afternoon. Aaron hit a second, off left-hander Don Gullett, to break a 10th-inning tie and lift the Braves to a 4-3 win. The ball originates from the collection of Donald Davidson, the longtime Director of Publicity with the Boston, Milwaukee, and Atlanta Braves. Davidson was quick to recover all of Aaron’s important milestone balls, which he would annotate and then save, with this particular ball reading: “Home Run Broke Tie with Babe Ruth for Most Home Runs with Same Club, Old Record - 659 / Hank Aaron, Home Run #660 / Hit 8/6/72, Riverfront Stadium, Cincinnati, Off Pitcher Wayne Simpson, Final Score Braves 4, Reds 3.” In fine, game-used condition, with slight overall toning. Accompanied by a letter of provenance from a previous owner, who personally obtained this baseball from the family estate of Davidson. Starting Bid $1000

1799. Jack Johnson Typed Letter Signed. Rare TLS, one page, 7.25 x 7.75, personal letterhead, June 3, 1943. Letter to Mr. Boardman, forwarding to him “a small picture, thinking perhaps you might like to have it for your collection. If I had any larger ones, I would be glad to send one to you, but I am out of them at present. Thanking you again, and with best regards and good luck.” In fine condition, with lightly trimmed edges (barely nipping the bottom of the “J” in “Johnson”), and faint toning along the top edge from adhesive residue on the back. 1800. Los Angeles 1984 Summer Olympics Torch. Official 1984 Los Angeles Olympics torch, brass-finished with tan leather handles, measuring 22.25˝ in length and 4.75˝ at its widest point, manufactured by Turner Ind and engraved “1983 LAOOC,” with a pair of Los Angeles Games logos on the base of the handle. The black burner remains in place, for an overall length of 23˝. Bowl is engraved along the top, “Citius, Altius, Fortius, “ with the rings between each word, and the L.A. Memorial Coliseum Stadium below. Exhibits some very slight wear to the bowl and handle. Includes its original relay diploma, opening and safety instruction pamphlet, and replacement burner and end caps. Starting Bid $200

1804. Pete Rose’s Game-Used Milestone Bat Used to Break Honus Wagner’s Singles Record. Significant

game-used official Hillerich & Bradsby Louisville Slugger ‘Pete Rose’ signature-model R195 baseball bat, 35 inches and 32 ounces, signed and certified on the barrel in silver ink, “Game Used to Break Honus Wagner’s Singles Record, Pete Rose”; also signed and inscribed above, “A great fan, Pete Rose.” The uncracked bat is made of top-quality dark-stained white ash with all of the barrel stampings deep and defined. Factory records indicate that this particular model was a favorite of Rose’s, as he ordered 35-inch, 32-ounce Louisville Slugger R195 bats throughout the entire 1977-1979 period. In fine condition, exhibiting moderate use including ball and lace marks.

On August 5, 1979, Pete Rose hit his 2,427th single to surpass Honus Wagner’s National League record. Three days later, the Philadelphia Phillies held a ceremony to present him with a plaque displaying the bat, ball, and first base bag that were involved in the milestone. Rose continued to use the bat, however, and planned to send it to the National Baseball Hall of Fame and Museum. In an incident in Houston on the night of August 17th, he accidentally lost the bat into the stands on a swing. The Associated Press reported: “It was a frustrating night for Rose. He went 0-for-4 and watched his favorite bat slip out of his hands on a third strike in the seventh inning and fly into the stands down the right field line. No one was injured, but a woman in the stands kept the bat, rejecting efforts by Astros officials to exchange it…Rose was indignant at suggestions that he let the bat go on purpose, and he was even more miffed by what he said was selfishness on the woman’s part. ‘The bat just slipped out of my hands,’ Rose said. ‘I’ve batted 11,000 times and it’s the first time that ever happened. I broke Honus Wagner’s all-time singles record with that bat last week, and I was going to send it to the Hall of Fame.’” Rose evidently forgave the fan, later inscribing the bat with a proud confirmation of his milestone moment. Extraordinary circa 1928 Brine’s Official League baseball with red-and-blue stitching, boldly signed in fountain pen on the sweet spot, “Babe Ruth,” and on a side panel, “Lou Gehrig.” Also signed on the upper and lower panels by Ira Flagstead, the starting center fielder for the Boston Red Sox throughout most of the 1920s, and by Foster Herbert ‘Steve’ Slayton, a right-handed reliever who pitched seven innings for the Red Sox in 1928. Slayton’s Society of Baseball Research (SABR) article notes: ‘Somewhere there still exists a Fox Movietone News photograph of Steve Slayton posing with Babe Ruth and Lou Gehrig during a long-ago spring training in Florida.’ Displayed in a wooden case beside an Upper Deck ‘Baseball Heroes’ card of Babe Ruth. “Babe Ruth,” on an off-white 3 x .75 slip affixed inside the front cover of a circa 1932 Waterman’s Autograph Album. Other signatures within the album (mostly clipped and affixed inside) include: Calvin Coolidge, Ignacy Jan Paderewski, Charles H. Mayo, William J. Mayo, Glenn S. ‘Pop’ Warner, Yehudi Menuhin, Floyd Gibbons, William Gibbs McAdoo, Ella A. Boole, Perry Newberry, John Nance Garner, Al Smith, Aimee McPherson, Rudy Vallée, and Mary Pickford. Original 6.5 x 4 scorecard for a 19th century Major League Baseball game between the Detroit Wolverines and the Philadelphia Philadelphians (Quakers/Phillies) on May 11, 1885, filled out on both sides in pencil entirely in the hand of Philadelphia manager Harry Wright, who signs his initials, “H.
