Amazing DS, one page, 8.5 x 11, September 14, 1983. An original work order for the recording of “’Purple Rain’” at Hollywood’s Sunset Sound, listing Prince as the artist, producer, and engineer. The work description details studio time, outboard equipment, materials used, and Sunset personnel, and totals to “1,938.90.” Signed at the conclusion in pencil, “Prince.” In fine condition, with a single set of staple holes and minor crease to upper left corner. Accompanied by a copy of a certificate of authenticity from Sunset Sound and Sound Factory. Intent on making the title song to the Purple Rain soundtrack as personal and dramatic as he possibly could, Prince recorded the original track at a live concert on August 3, 1983, at Minneapolis’ First Avenue Club. Following the show the tapes were sent to Studio 3 at the LA-based Sunset Sound to be looked over by engineers David Z and David Leonard, two men who would assist in final edits and the recording of the song’s included string arrangement. But it was Prince, who, in the words of Leonard, was ultimately ‘driving the bus,’ and would definitively shape both song and album. Purple Rain, the eponymously titled soundtrack for Prince’s 1984 movie debut, was also the first album to feature the Revolution as an officially credited back-up group, a distinction that added a denser, more dynamic scope to Prince’s eclectic brand of R&B and pop rock. The album’s innovative charms resulted in widespread acclaim and numerous awards for Prince, who became the first singer to simultaneously hold the No. 1 album, single, and film in the US.
