work, we have plenty to offer. Since its beginnings in Lincolnshire over 75 years ago, Roythornes has developed beyond its historic East Midlands heartland. We act for clients across the country and sit comfortably among the UK’s top 200 law firms. Our people work out of four offices: Spalding, Peterborough, Nottingham

What our trainees say Rebecca Brook-Smith Trainee 01775 842647 rebeccabrooksmith@roythornes.co.uk On leaving university, I recognised that I wanted to gain some real hands-on, practical experience whilst studying part-time for the LPC. I also knew that I wanted to be part of a firm which was large enough to be able to offer real quality work, yet not so large that, as a trainee, I would disappear into the ether. Roythornes offers a spectacular combination

Alex Armstrong Solicitor, Commercial Property team 01775 842639 alexarmstrong@roythornes.co.uk “Brought up in the North East and educated in the West Country, I moved to the East Midlands as an undergraduate. I have developed a real love for the area. Its vibrant legal scene offered a great place to begin a career - the next thing was to find the ‘right’ firm for me…

Lisa Millington Solicitor, Private Client team 01775 842574 lisamillington@roythornes.co.uk “Being a local Lincolnshire girl, the prospect of going to work in the big city never really appealed to me, but that’s not to say I wanted to compromise when it came to my legal training. I was looking for a firm with an excellent reputation, both in the local area and

Joel Tweddel Trainee 01775 842623 joeltweddell@roythornes.co.uk “I first joined Roythornes as a Paralegal after graduating from the University of Warwick reading Law. I thoroughly enjoyed my time as a Paralegal and learnt a lot from the experience and was fortunate to be offered a training contract within the firm. Roythornes provided both encouragement and support

of high quality work, being a top 200 law firm, yet within a friendly and approachable working environment. There is also always plenty going on outside of work, whether a social committee event or an informal get together after work. Upon being offered a training contract with Roythornes, I was lucky enough to work as a paralegal for one year prior to starting as a trainee, alongside studying for the LPC. Roythornes has been thoroughly accommodating and supportive throughout, allowing me to take study leave when necessary to sit my exams. As a paralegal, I was able to work on a variety of different legal matters and I have been very grateful for this opportunity prior to commencing my training with Roythornes. I really couldn’t ask for a more comprehensive and enjoyable Training Contract.

The idea of working at a small, high-street firm was not appealing, nor did I want to be at a firm where I would spend my days (and nights) at a photocopier! I wanted somewhere with real commercial depth and with the best, most varied training available. I began my training contract with Roythornes in September 2011 and qualified in 2013. I have been struck by the variety of work that has landed on my desk, from spending a week in the Royal Courts of Justice to working on complex, large-scale development transactions. And, more to the point, I felt like a valued member of the firm, and not “just a trainee”.

beyond that could offer training in a wide range of specialisms and where client relationships mattered. Roythornes ticks all of those boxes. I’ll never forget my first interview at Roythornes back in March 2010. Everyone was finding it tough to get interviews and many firms had stopped recruiting altogether. But from the outset, I was given the impression that, despite the tough economic climate, Roythornes was still committed to investing in the future. Throughout my training contract I was given far more responsibility than I ever imagined and was made to feel part of the team in every seat I have worked in. What more could I ask for?”

by allowing me to leave to complete my LPC and then return to my training contract with the firm. My training contract has met my expectations and more. I wanted to be given an opportunity to train in a wide range of departments and specialisms as well as ‘get my hands dirty’ in real legal work, Roythornes have offered precisely this. I am thoroughly enjoying my training contract as I have been given the opportunity to work in a variety of departments from Agricultural Property to Family. I have been trusted with complex work and responsibilities including running my own matters allowing me to make the day-to-day decisions of a fully qualified solicitor.

I was trusted with some extremely technical work and exposed to a high level of client contact, in many cases running my own files. There is also a good social life and plenty of sporting activities to take part in (I’m an old hand at half-marathons now!)”

Trainee applications

What makes YOU stand out from the crowd? We are looking for graduates with at least a 2:1 degree, as well as excellent oral and written communication skills. We do not insist you have a law degree, or that you join us straight from university. What we are interested in is your potential to be a real asset to our team. Actually, we are looking for a spark of something extra, that “thing” which makes you stand out from the crowd, what “it” is differs from trainee to trainee but all of those we have taken on have it and we look to develop it through their training contract and beyond.
