PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE

Dear Members, On behalf of the General Committee, I would like to take this opportunity to wish all our members and their family a HAPPY 2018 and a belated MERRY CHRISTMAS to those who are Christians. At the time of writing this message, this General Committee is less than one month old but I am encouraged and thankful to see that most of the General Committee members are very enthusiastic and passionate about their respective portfolios, and most importantly moving forward as Team RLC 2018. I am pleased to inform you that our Auditors have completed their onsite work and we can expect the Audited Accounts for June 2017 finalized by mid-January as scheduled. With this problem settled, the General Committee will be working towards turning the club around by getting our Income & Expenditure in its proper perspective whilst maintaining the enjoyable clubbing lifestyle for all the members. We look forward to the members coming forward to enjoy the special Chinese New Year Menu at the Bunga Raya Chinese Restaurant and the related festive activities in the month of February. This will be followed by our club’s first ever Yoga Retreat on the 24 & 25 March led by Datin Suleiha Jawhar Merican from Healing Yoga at a fraction of the price charged by other organizations. At the same time watch out for the transformation of our club to make it current and happening for the younger generation starting with the next issue of this Newsletter and the Library. Many more exciting events and activities are being planned for your clubbing pleasure. A club can only be as good as its members. We urge all of you to LOVE THE CLUB, enjoy it and at the same time take good care of it. Better still, come forward to be part of this turnaround, and let us have your good suggestions and ideas. To all the Chinese members, GONG XI FA CAI and may the New Lunar Year bring you and your family an abundance of Health, Wealth & Happiness. Love & enjoy the club.

ROYAL BANQUET 19 November 2017 | Abdul Rashid Abdul Majid

A Royal Banquet was held on Sunday, 19 November 2017 at The Orchid of the Royal Lake Club in honour of Duli Yang Maha Mulia Paduka Seri Sultan Perak Darul Ridzuan Sultan Nazrin Muizzuddin Shah Ibni Almarhum Sultan Azlan Muhibbuddin Shah Al-Maghfur-lah as the Royal Patron of the Club. At 8.30pm DYMM Sultan Nazrin Shah and DYMM Raja Permaisuri Perak Tuanku Zara Salim arrived at the Club and was received by Club President, Dato’ Kamil Noor Ariff and his wife, Datin Sharifah Khairiah. Their Royal Highnesses were then introduced to the General Committee members and their spouses and Past Presidents before being ushered to the Holding Room for signing of the Guest Book. Being a new member of the Club DYMM Sultan Nazrin Shah and DYMM Tuanku Zara Salim were presented with the Royal Membership cards by the Club President, Dato’ Kamil Noor Ariff. As DYMM Sultan Nazrin Shah and DYMM Tuanku Zara Salim entered The Orchid they were graciously welcomed by about 120 members and their spouses who attended the Royal Banquet.

They included several Past Presidents - Dato’ Sivaloganathan, Datuk M Feisol Hassan, A Rahim Ismail, Peter Geh Cheng Thye, Goh Joon Hai, Chiam Tow Loon and Teoh Cheng Hai. The Solianos brought back fond memories of the Club while entertaining the guests, with a special appearance of Datin Paduka Julie Sudiro who rendered several favourite of yesteryears. Club Members, Tan Sri Razman Hashim and Rahim Ismail belted a few songs to enlighten the evening. Dato’ Sivalogananthan had the crowds in stitches with his witty speech amidst the entertainment. In his speech in welcoming the Royal couple, Club President, Dato’ Kamil expressed his gracious appreciation to DYMM Sultan Nazrin Shah for consenting to become the Royal Patron of Royal Lake Club and is confident that DYMM Sultan Nazrin Shah will bring great benefits to the Club. At the end of the event, DYMM Sultan Nazrin Shah and DYMM Tuanku Zara Salim set aside protocol and mingled around with the crowd while exchanging pleasantries and taking photographs with those present. The event marked yet another milestone in the history of the Club.

ANNUAL GENERAL MEETING

The 2017 Annual General Meeting of the Royal Lake Club was held on Sunday, 10 December 2017 and attended by 713 voting members. At 9.20am the Club President, Dato’ Kamil Noor Ariff, who chaired the meeting, called the meeting to order and invited the Club Secretary to read out the agenda. A one-minute silence was observed in honour of members who have passed away in 2017, after their names were read out. The Chairman went on to explain that the Audited accounts were not ready for presentation to the meeting and approval had been sought from the Registrar of Societies (ROS) to present the accounts to the membership at a future date. This request has been approved by the ROS. Several issues were raised by members in the AGM and of special mention was the Audit Committee report to the House. The Audit Committee Members comprising L T Kulaisingham as Chairman, Dato’ Syed Mustaffa Syed Ali and Stanley Lin Joon Huat were congratulated by members for a job well done. A few members commented that it was the best ever Audit Committee report presented to the house since many years ago. At 1.00pm Chairman, Dato’ Kamil Noor Ariff announced that voting for the new 2017/2018 President, Vice President and the General Committee members would commence from 1.00pm to 3.00pm. He then invited Election Committee Chairman, Dato’ Ali to introduce the scrutineers and empty ballot boxes were brought into the room for members viewing.

After lunch break the meeting continued with the remaining agenda and discussed two resolutions that were brought to the House. The evening ended with members congratulating the newly-elected General Committee members. The AGM was conducted in a cordial atmosphere and good sense prevailed all along.

IT'S NICE TO BE APPRECIATED 16 November 2018 | Uncle Yap

At the Appreciation Dinner in the Banquet Hall, the ever-suave and urbane Shahizan Hasnan opened proceedings with a welcome message that paid tribute to the General Committee, the Management and the many volunteers who have contributed to the successful running of Club affairs in 2017. President Dato' Kamil Noor Ariff took the opportunity to introduce the new General Manager, Francis Xavier. He also announced that he would be stepping down after an eventful year, one capped by the Royal Banquet that was graced by DYMM Paduka Seri Sultan Perak Darul Ridzuan Sultan Nazrin Muizzuddin Shah who had just consented to be a Royal Patron of the Club. Chua Chye Hup, on behalf of the volunteers serving in the various Sub-Committees’, thanked the General Committee, the Management and the spouses of the volunteers for their co-operation in making Club events so well-run. The members then partook of a very generous spread of good food and a well-stock bar. It was indeed nice to be appreciated. 10

The event, held on Friday, 15 December 2017 at Banquet Hall, saw attendance by some 94 members and guests. On hand to welcome them was Club General Manager, Francis Xavier. The evening started with opening remarks by Wine & Liquor Panelist, Rouvin Thiruchelvam. Seven (7) suppliers participated; Asia Euro, Nam Lee Cheong, Albert Wines, Geovinum, Milawa, CSS Liquor and Fortier Wines & Spirit, with more than 100 Wines and selected Whiskies from all over the world made available to attendees. It was well-organized event and we wish to record our thanks to all suppliers, members and guests for making it a success.

SAYING GOOD BYE TO 2017 IN STYLE 31 December 2017 | Ruby Lim

Time flies when you are having fun and so it was with us as we stepped into the Banquet Hall with some 200 other members who had come to say goodbye to 2017 and to welcome 2018. As we were still slurping our way through a most delicious pumpkin soup, our exuberant emcee, Derby got up to introduce The Elements, a five-piece band led by Glen Sallay. While the band got ready, Derby showed his mettle with a karaoke rendition of Room at the top of the stairs... what a groovy voice he had! Derby announced that the evening would be filled with a lot of goodies including lucky draws, with the top prize of a fabulous round trip ticket for two and in a quiet voice, he added, an LRT trip from Wangsa Maju to Bandar Tun Razak. That got the entire hall bursting with laughter. The Elements lived up to their billing and entertained us with many familiar numbers including the Teresa Teng classic, The moon represent my heart (月亮代表我的心) sung to perfection by beautiful vocalist, Yan. The band got people to pack the dance floor with line-dance favourites such as Achy Breaky Heart and Stayin’ Alive.

Meanwhile, Roses & Dollars were wowing the sell-out crowd with their brand of music in the cosy ambience of The Orchid. Club President Patrick Chiam and his VP, Col Johan and GC member, Dato Nik Gee circulated among members and their guests, making sure things were going smoothly. Down in Batek Bar, the crowd kept on increasing as more members came to join the merriment. We dined our way through grilled salmon and lamb... and wondered how the caterers were able to serve more than 300 dinners simultaneously and still fulfill odd requests for English mustard and cut chillie padi (Malaysians have really weird taste that we cannot eat Mat Salleh food without our hot stuff) The bewitching hour approached and almost everybody was on the dance floor, waiting for the count-down synchronized by a television station. 10-9-8-7-6-5-4-3-2-1 and pandemonium broke out as the balloons dropped and people sang the evergreen Robert Burns classic Auld Lang Syne. People joined up and snaked their way round the hall… Happy New Year and may 2018 bring you joy and happiness and good health.

GOLF: TOUR TO HAINAN, CHINA 30 October - 3 November 2017 | John Cheang

A total of 20 golfers and 10 non-golfers went on the much-anticipated tour to Hainan from 30 October to 2 November 2017. Hainan is the smallest and southernmost province of China. It is known for its sub-tropical climate, beach resorts and forested, mountainous interior. Haikou, its capital, is situated at the northern tip of the island. The southern city of Sanya has many beaches that range from the 22km-long Sanya Bay to crescent Yalong Bay and its luxury hotels. With balmy weather in the ‘20s, it is often called the Hawaii of the East. We landed in Haikou and went by coach across the island to Sanya, passing by a few tourist spots on the way. The golfers played a total of three 18-hole games while the spouses and non-golfers had a separate guided tour of tourist destinations. We played in the Red Valley Golf Resort on the second day, Yalong Bay Golf Club on the third day, both in Sanya. We went back to Haikou and played in the Mission Hill Golf Club the following day. The weather was kind to us and we had a great time of fellowship and good golfing!

GOLF: ANNUAL CHAMPIONSHIP & ANNUAL DINNER 2017 16 & 26 November 2017 | Che Roslan Abdul Ghani

The RLC Annual Golf Championship 2017 was held on Thursday, 16 November 2017. It was a huge success as our golfers turned out for a morning of golf and fun in a great weather and a beautiful conditioned golf course. A total of 60 golfers participated in this year’s game at Staffield Country Resort, Mantin. It was a shotgun start with 15 flights playing the field. The format of the game was stroke play with 3 categories namely Open, Senior and Ladies. It has been a lot of fun for everyone, but this year lived up to the tournament past. Kudos and congratulations to all the RLC golfers who participated in the competition and the winners of the tournament. We apologise for not being able to list the names of all winners, managing only top 3 winners in each category. The RLC Golf Annual Dinner and Prize Presentation was held on Sunday, 26 November 2017 at 7.30pm at the Banquet Hall, RLC. A total of 90 golfers and spouses attended the dinner with VP RLC, Bernard as guest-of-honour. The evening was lively, with good food, prize presentation and lucky draws. Our sincere appreciation and thanks goes out to all for making this year’s tournament and annual dinner a success. BILLIARD: SECTION YEAR END TOURNAMENT 2017 18 November 2017 | Sunny Lee

The planning for the year-end tournament for the Section started early in the year. At the outset, the Section had already decided to have a more even contest to determine the winner for the year. To achieve this objective, the Section held a league-type selection tournament to separate the players to two groups; Group A which consisted top 10 players and Group B which was made up by division 2 players. At the year-end tournament to determine the champion for the year, the format of play would be to make a draw of a player from each group to partner as a team. This then would make the playing field a bit fairer. The resultant grouping determined the following players. Group A Hiu Chi Ren, Cheong Wai Loong, Kam Kah Vhei, Peter Radford, Wong Hor Wai, Sunny Lee Group B Dr Tan, Idris Junid, Dato Halim Hashim, Major Yusof (Rtd), Yusof Saad, WK Lai, Anthony Tan A draw was scheduled to determine the partners for the tournament on the eve of the tournament which was held on the 18 November 2017.

Pairings were as follows: Hiu + Dr Tan: Peter + Idris Junid: Kah Vhei + Dato Halim: Wong Horr Wai + Maj Yusof: Sunny Lee + Yusof Saad Due to some last minute pullout, WK Lai, partnered Athony Tan. The tournament got off to a great start with the attendance of the Vice President and some General Committee members. There was coffee and tea served throughout the day, finished off with a sumptuous dinner and prize-giving to the participants. It was indeed a fun way to promote and to increase the popularity of the game. I think the section has achieved its objective of creating awareness of the virtues of the game. The matches were keenly and seriously contested. There were some great shots, not to mention some nail-biting moments too. The event was indeed a success as all who participated had a good time. The evening culminated with karaoke session where the members also showed their prowess away from the Big Tables. The Pan Asia Hash happens every odd-numbered year and this time Sokcho in Gangwon Province had been chosen to host the first ever mammoth Hash event in Korea. The 15 hashers from RLC who attended joined in some pre-event tour of the Korean Peninsula ... nothing about the 'fire and fury' threatened by President Donald Trump was going to deter us, brave souls. More than 800 hashers took to the streets in their red dresses, skirts and other finery for the opening Red Dress Run, a traditional charity undertaking by hashers whereby proceeds are donated to local institutions for the welfare of the less fortunate. Sokcho mayor Byung Seon Lee sportingly donned a red dress and even arranged for roadside entertainment such as Korean drums and other traditional folk art to create a festive atmosphere and ambience in the town’s market place and shopping centre. After that opener with a bang, the grand opening the next day was yet another majestic affair with music and dancing and free flow of Kloud beer all night long, provided generously by the main sponsor, Lotte Liquor Co. The next day saw the main stadium becoming a hive of activities as the 3,000 hashers from all over Asia and further away queued for buses to take them to the three local run sites and three "outstation" run sites. Our C C Goh bravely took part in the Ball Breakers Run and returned a creditable time of 3 hours 39 minutes for the 26 km trek across mountainous terrain. Our less-macho group chose Pyeong Chang which would serve as the venue for the Winter Olympics in February 2018. The three runs, long, medium and short, centred around the Cross Country Ski Arena and passed through some

beautiful Korean country-side. Alas, snow was not expected until a couple of months later. The most popular run-site was Go Seong, situated next to the Demilitarized Zone (known better as DMZ) where runners met security personnel patrolling this patch of land separating North Korea from South Korea. For security purposes, pre-registration was a requirement. Hashers certainly have a propensity for danger. We came back to the main Sokcho Stadium feeling exhilarated from the outing. There was food and drinks galore as we took part in the election for who would be the host for Pan Asia Hash 2019. We partied on the whole night, with live bands and hash acts keeping us entertained. The next day, the running crowd had dwindled to fewer than a thousand as people nursed their hangovers. Nevertheless, a few of us from RLC went to Inje where the route ran alongside a beautiful river and autumn leaves of many hues and colours adorned the mountain side. It was truly a sight to behold. Uncle Yap took the difficult short trail and even came out FROP. I also helped the Taiwan team conduct the Circle which was a barrel of fun. It was time to return to the main stadium where the festivities were moved to due to a downpour. We have had 4 wonderful dry days of sunshine and now at the final night, the weather changed. We speculated that the organisers must have engaged a powerful bomoh. It was announced that the team from Mainland China won the bid to host PAH2019. PAH2017 had been a fantastic hash event, well run and well organised. As our plane took off, we tucked into our nasi lemak with gusto as it tasted like heaven after a week of Korean food. Some 300 hashers from the Klang Valley gathered at the MBPJ free carpark adjacent to Taman Jaya from as early as 3.30 on a hot and humid afternoon to collect their prized freebie, a Fred Flintstone dress, complete with blue tie. At the appointed hour for RLC Harriers Run #999, the two live hares, Peter Leong and CCGoh sped off into Taman Jaya and made a circuitous route back to the front of the carpark where Cowboy's BoozeBuz van was waiting to quench the thirst on this hot dog days afternoon. Then it was across busy Jalan Gasing into the posh Section 5 where the BoozeBuz van had gone ahead and awaited under the LRT tracks. A light-hearted circle ensued, punishing many hashers with a litany of sins and transgressions. The trail then led into the Bukit Gasing Recreation Park, across a suspension bridge and then, at the playground and up the hill to the residence of GM Tarzan where we tucked heartily into pizza and had a poolside party. As the sun set, we made our weary way back to the carpark for a much-needed shower before changing into the Bedrock costume. Our pre-dinner treat included satay, mutton curry and nasi lemak and the beer flowed freely.

In a festive mood

Can you imagine three hundred people dressed as Fred and Wilma Flintstone walking into Waikiki Bar along Lorong Sultan, that famous street where A&W Root Beer first made its appearance in Malaysia in the 60's? We certainly turned a lot of heads. A buffet dinner catered for those still hungry and the spirits made their appearance... a dozen litre bottles of single malt ... and so the hashers from RLC Harriers and their guests from Royal Klang, Petaling, Damansara, Royal Selangor and other active chapters dined and we wined and had ourselves a jolly good time.

It seemed like yesterday when the then-RLC President David Yap flagged off the inaugural run of the RLC Harriers. In a flash, we were starting Run #1000 after 19 years of continuous Tuesday evening runs. How time flies when you are having a good time. We had all come early to collect our freebies and tucked into pre-run refreshments before the indefatigable Rule #1 Wendy Lum led everyone in some warming-up exercises to pulsating music. After the compulsory group photo, hares for the day, Peter Leong and C C Goh got us running into the Lake Gardens in the direction of the Deer Park and on to Tun Razak Memorial. The weather was dry but sultry, ideal for running. After the first check, the trail meandered gently before getting us back to the Club where a surprise awaited - the Bar was open!! The Circle was quite an elaborate affair even though we were quite eager to get washed and changed into our fineries for the grand event at The Orchid. It was an agreeable sight to see hashers, normally in shorts, now togged up in suits and fine batik shirts and the ladies in gowns reflecting the Christmassy colours of red and green. As usual, the celebration of the 19th anniversary of the founding of RLC Harriers started with a cake cut by all the past GrandMasters. Then a sketch was presented by a motley crew with GM Tarzan, Alka, Bala, Peter, Afif and Sue Ng.

We tucked into an array of local food, buffet-style and the band struck up a note to get people dancing on the floor. Our Club's newly-elected President, Patrick Chiam made his appearance after rushing from a meeting and was cajoled into singing two karaoke numbers. The bar at the Orchid was a hive of activities as hashers lined up for beer and whisky while others kept the dance floor occupied ... and so the hashers of RLC Harriers wined and they dined and they danced and had a jolly good time. Tennis Annual Night, held on 9 December 2017 at the Pavilion, saw our caterer Albert and his Chef preparing a delicious spread of lamb and chicken barbeque served with a medley of salads and sauces. Also on the menu were a variety of local favourites such as mamak mee, kampung fried rice and stir-fried vegetables. We ended the year on a high note. There were 6 tennis social events which we themed after 4 major Grand Slams; The Australian Open, French Open, Wimbledon and U.S Open. Each event was complemented with a similarly-themed food spread, thanks to the support and contribution by section members to create the atmosphere.

The highlight of the year was when we hosted a friendly with Penang Sports Club after a two-year hiatus, which saw the attendance of Presidents of both clubs. It was a good time had by all. Second day saw top qualifier matches; we used the knockout format to reach the Champion for each category. Table tennis captain CT Phang said this annual championship is a platform to select RLC players to represent our club in future outside tournaments.

More than 40 Badminton Section members gathered at the Perdana Room on Tuesday, 21 December 2017 for the Section’s annual celebration. In appreciation of their support over the year, the Badminton Sub Committee decided to present all with a Badminton Section t-shirt each. In his opening remarks, Racket Game 2017 Chairman thanked members for their continued support and called for greater cooperation in the coming year to ensure a more vibrant and active section. Dinner followed, during which prizes for the 2017 Annual Competition were given away. The evening concluded with a well-participated karaoke session.

Results/Worked Example of Sudoku Challenge: November/December 2017 Issue.

Adapted No. 16 (Hard) from Extreme Sudoku by Tetsuya Nishio (Vertical, Inc. New York 2010). Solving process is based on a systematic/structured methodology involving analyzing in the 3 bands/3 stacks (tools: analysis of R, C, B, using missing digits; techniques: by only-cell (OC) or only-digit (OD) logic. Only OD logic used is stated. The methodology consists of initial digit analysis (IDA) using only initial digits and follow-up analysis (FUA). Every initial solution/initial locked set (LS) is followed up until no more followup solution can be deduced. F. up analysis of a soln. takes place in its territory (OT) and extended territory (ET). When no direct soln. can be deduced, strategic locked set is deduced to enable the next solution to be deduced logically; otherwise, “what-if” reasoning (trial-and-error way) is used. The process creates chains of solutions containing main chain and branched-out mini-chains originating from each initial soln./initial LS set deduced from IDA. Comments on the Solving of No. 16 Extreme Sudoku (Nishio) (Due to “Comments” we skip showing Solutions Flow Map) Refer to Fig. 3 To solve SudokuLS(12) logically, we use strategic, logic-based locked sets of 1-4 candidates in 2-4 blank cells in a R/C/B to enable the logical deduction of a digit solution, which otherwise would have to be deduced by analysis using “what-if” reasoning, a “trial-and-error” approach. In a sense, the use of locked sets, which are based on R/C/B rules, is similar to the use of principle-based “formulae” in Science and Mathematics. Except for a locked set of 1 candidate, a locked set of 2 blank cells must consist of 2 candidates; 3 blank cells must consist of 3 candidates; 4 blank cells must consist of 4 candidates in a R/C/B. In Figure 3, we deduce LS(24) in B8, split LS(35) and LS(48) in C8 and also split LS(348) and LS(59) in R2 by LS principle. The rest are locked sets in 3-5 candidates in their respective Rs/Cs/Bs.
