WELCOME

The Theatre 12 September ~ 20 October

THE COUNTRY WIFE by William Wycherley Directed by Polly Findlay

Welcome to the Royal Exchange Theatre – a space for you in the heart of Manchester. We’re open seven days a week and whenever you choose to visit there’ll be something for you here: amazing theatre productions, live music, exhibitions, poetry readings and lots of opportunities for you to get involved with workshops, discussions and community events. Or if you prefer, you can relax with a drink in the glorious surroundings of the Great Hall, enjoy the free Wi-Fi and (if you pick the right day) some free foyer entertainment. In this brochure you’ll find full details of events from September ~ December. Christmas is a magical time at the Exchange and this year is no exception. Our fantastic Christmas show, RATS’ TALES, has been written specially for us by Poet Laureate Carol Ann Duffy. Enchanting and mysterious folk tales unfold in our spectacular theatre space, mixing live music, stunning visuals and engrossing storytelling. It’s a festive must-see for everyone – and the perfect introduction to our Theatre for old and young. We look forward to welcoming you to our theatre very soon.

In the gossip-fuelled London of the 17th Century Harry Horner has started a brilliantly calculated rumour, and soon every husband in London believes he is impotent. Armed with this ingenious alibi Harry is free to charm his way into the hearts and boudoirs of every ‘respectable’ wife in society. When Jack Pinchwife arrives in London the battle is on to keep his innocent ‘country wife’ from the clutches of Harry Horner. But how innocent is Margery? Intrigue, sex and seduction kept this subversive comedy from the stage for 200 years. See it brought to sparkling life by Olivier Award-winning director Polly Findlay, whose recent productions include GOOD at the Royal Exchange and ANTIGONE at the National Theatre. INTRODUCING… THE COUNTRY WIFE Tuesday 25 September, 10am ~ 12pm A pre-show talk and demonstration-based workshop for schools, community groups and individuals. £6/£4 (concessions & groups leaders). Book on 0161 833 0483.

BLACK ROSES

ORPHEUS DESCENDING

On August 11th, 2007 Sophie Lancaster was beaten unconscious in Stubbeylee Park, Bacup and later died from her injuries in hospital. She was 20 years old, had just passed her A-Levels and was working out what to do with her life. She was killed because she dressed differently. BLACK ROSES is an elegy for Sophie in which she tells her own story through a series of poems by the award-winning poet Simon Armitage, alongside the words of her mother, Sylvia Lancaster.

In the American Deep South, Lady Torrance is trapped in a loveless marriage and a small town. When a charismatic drifter arrives with a snakeskin jacket and a guitar the narrow-minded community is soon in uproar. Lady’s long-forgotten passions are reignited, but will love and freedom be allowed to triumph? Imogen Stubbs stars in this major revival of Tennessee Willliam’s classic drama about the power of imagination and love in the face of conformity.

The piece provoked an unprecedented response when it premiered on Radio Four last year. Now it has been re-imagined for the theatre with Rachel Austin and Julie Hesmondhalgh (CORONATION STREET).

Presented by special arrangement with the University of the South, Sewanee, Tennessee.

The production supports the ongoing work of the Sophie Lancaster Foundation, which promotes respect and understanding of subcultures in our communities.
