Cultivate a love of reading in your child Jenny Zhang

My favourite aspect of being a librarian is connecting children with books and helping them discover the wonder, excitement and delight found in a great story. Reading not only contributes to academic success, it sparks creativity and joy. However, with so many distractions and books to choose from, how do you engage your child and motivate them to read? Here are my tips: Let your child be the leader in choosing their book. Do they like comics, adventure, scary stories, funny books or information books? Find out what topics they like to read; then, take a trip to the library and let your child choose their books. A librarian can be your guide and provide recommendations or point you
in the right direction. Share your passion for books. Bring stories to life by reading out loud together, no matter how old your kids are. Parents and caregivers are their child’s best teachers, and by demonstrating that reading is fun and rewarding, they will grow to love reading too. Reading together is a great way to enrich the relationship with your child and to spark their passion for literature. Read everywhere.Take a book with you wherever you go, whether it is to the park, the beach or the dentist’s office. Have a variety of reading material readily available throughout your home, like cookbooks, newspapers, magazines and online articles. Show your child that reading is a pleasurable and fulfilling part of everyday life. Make reading interactive.
