NEW COURSES OFFERED Students heading to Douglas College this September will have more courses to choose from, according to the local postsecondary institution. For students interested in a career in mining and mining exploration, there is a new geological resources diploma. Many courses offered as part of the program are transferable so students can move on to university once the diploma is complete, noted a press release. Meanwhile, students in the college’s social work program can now complete a social work degree without having to transfer to a university. Douglas College announced earlier this month it had received approval to offer a social work degree program. “The bachelor’s degree is the entry level for many careers in the profession,” said Carla Alexandra, community social service work program coordinator. “We had a good number of our students who had a relationship with their instructors and wanted to stay. Now they can.” See douglascollege.ca. DONATION WILL HELP STUDENTS More money will be available for New West residents hoping to attend Douglas College. Continued on page 16
