The DoubleTree not only arranged everything, but called the best of the best vendors who went above and beyond to make sure our vision was made real. The entire day was a miracle.

“We chose The DoubleTree by Hilton because of its location and beauty. It has an elegant style with greenery along the walls, a white cloth tent with white chandeliers hanging down, fireplaces and a beautiful view of the sun setting over downtown Tallahassee.”

Achieving Harmony in Marriage

As a writer with a musician husband, words and the intentions they represent are sacred to me. At our wedding, we lled a vintage card catalog drawer with library cards that had some of our favorite lines and lyrics printed on them for guests to take as favors. From Joan Didion to Relient K, these words resonate for Zan and I and remind us of our love.

I’ve listened to If We Were Vampires by Jason Isbell and the 400 Unit more times than I can compute. Still, I’m struck by it each time. The lyrics are poetic, visceral and devastatingly relatable. In essence, it’s a song about life being a gift we are meant to cherish and enjoy because we never know how much time we will have on earth.

To me, it’s one of the greatest love songs because each time I listen, I am inspired to live more purposefully, to love my partner with intention. Isbell’s lyrics are re ective of a reality I’ve often felt. Sleepy smiles shared over co ee; traveling on a jet among the clouds; holding each other through heartbreak; watching our nieces and nephews grow; painting the walls of our home; saying vows under an ancient oak. In all these moments, I think that even the rest of our lives won’t be enough time for us to spend with each other.

In the vows that Zan and I wrote, though our word choices varied, we both vowed not take a day loving one another for granted. That’s not to say there aren’t days spent tired, disgruntled or wanting to disconnect from one another and the world, but we know always that such down time will be short-lived.

Being the editor of a weddings magazine for six years has equipped me to con dently provide wedding planning advice, but when asked for marriage advice, I’m hesitant. I am only just over a year into a forever journey. Who am I to say that what works for me and Zan is a plausible solution for others?

What I can con dently recommend is this: Make your spouse a priority. The distractions in this world are limitless, pulling our attention in countless directions. But if I could start you down one path, it would lead to being in tune with your partner above all else.

Mortality reminds us to take that trip to Napa Valley; to take that extra lap around the neighborhood holding hands; to plant that garden together even if your thumbs aren’t especially green; to stay in bed a tad longer just to be close; to keep intentionally choosing each other.

Every year, I’m humbled and grateful to hear the stories of how couples made both easy and di cult choices to marry one another. There’s much adversity in this world, which is why marriage becomes a sacred matter. Within these pages, there are many examples of uplifting and unwavering love.

While I have not yet learned all there is to know about marriage, I can assure you that the vendors and venues in this magazine will put you rst and make your wedding a priority. They will serve you as great partners in your most special of days.

As for me, I look forward to more years of learning and of being a student of love.

All my best,

Bride-to-Be Graces Cover

Photo shoot makes for a trial run of her wedding day

Photography by Jennifer G Photography

Adorned in a wedding gown and a veil that owed in the sea breeze, our cover bride, Maia Mae Billman, experienced a practice run of her own wedding day that was months in the future. On the beautiful beachfront at the Hilton Sandestin Beach Golf Resort & Spa, Maia not only got to pose and play, but she also re ected on her upcoming nuptials.

“There were many special moments throughout the day, but putting on a veil stood out most because it was the rst time I’d seen myself in one,” Maia said. “It all became real at that point, which made me all the more excited about our wedding and marriage.”

In September 2021, she became engaged to her ance Chance Hu , whom she has known since high school. When the pandemic closed college campuses, both headed home to Santa Rosa Beach — Maia from Florida State University and Chance from Vanderbilt University. They reconnected and had to get creative with date ideas because many businesses were closed.

“We played tennis, paddleboarded and spent hours just talking and reading on a dock in Grayton Beach,” said Maia. “We fell in love on that dock, and we both just knew we were meant for each other.”

A year and a half later, Chance proposed on that very dock. A surprise celebratory dinner with both of their families followed.

Maia will be using many of the cover shoot vendors at her own wedding, scheduled for October 2022. She enjoyed

20 NORTHWESTFLORIDAWEDDINGS.NET

spending time with them and helping to promote their businesses.

While having hair and makeup done, the entire bridal party celebrated with champagne, fruit and cheese to honor the mother of the bride, Kerri, on her birthday. The day was made all the more special because mom got to see her daughter dolled up as a bride.

JA 30A Salon styled Maia’s half-up/ half-down hair in loose curls to align with the beach setting. Serenity by the sea Spa chose a natural glam look with a mauve lip color.

Upon seeing the four dresses Margaret Ellen Bridal had selected for the shoot, Maia recognized one of the dresses as being her own runnerup choice. Always fashion-forward, Margaret Ellen Bridal selected trending styles, many of them featured in this magazine, including sweeping veils, scatter pearls, simple yet chic dresses and lots of lace.

McCaskill & Company, the designer of Maia’s engagement ring, decked her in a treasure trove of diamonds, pearls and opals.

She was handed a gorgeous bouquet, styled by SunQuest Beach Weddings, of cream, blush and burgundy blooms with greenery and pampas grass. The setting was enhanced by an archway designed with coordinating orals.

From the sunny afternoon through the golden hour to the last rays of the day, Jennifer Garcia of Jennifer G Photography captured every stunning moment for Northwest Florida Weddings Magazine’s rst styled cover shoot. ▪

“Since I was born, I grew up coming to Sandestin for our family vacations. My family owned a condo in the Grand Sandestin for years, so it is pretty much a second home for my family. It is special for us and holds so many memories, and now it will always be a special place for Tyler and me.

“Sandestin was absolutely amazing from start to finish. They were so easy to work with and give you everything you need to plan your wedding. All their vendors were so wonderful as well. I was never stressed while planning a destination wedding. Zoe and Jennifer made my wedding day so smooth and took care of any hiccups that came our way. I was able to relax and enjoy my day, which should be every bride’s No. 1 want out of her wedding day.”

“Shay and I both grew up on lakes, so we knew we wanted to be close to the water. When I came across the Solaris Yacht, I thought, ‘What’s better than being right on the water?’ I loved how the aesthetic of the yacht was bright and clean compared to some others that I found, and my family has always loved Destin, so it was the perfect fit.

“I loved doing our wedding on the Solaris Yacht because it was a vacation and special event for every single person who attended. From the moment we stepped onto the boat, it felt like a party. I wanted my wedding to be enjoyable and memorable for everyone who traveled to be there, and it really was.” —

Beyond the Destination Wedding Weekend

Expand your special occasion with an extended stay

Sun, sand and drink — they add up to a state of mind that leads countless couples to beach and destination weddings in Northwest Florida. The area makes a wedding weekend seem like a vacation. Why not make it one by extending and making the most of your stay?

Given all the amenities that beach resorts provide, many couples opt for a long weekend or a weeklong celebration. This is especially popular for destination weddings.

Couples work with their resort or hotel to arrange a schedule of events, options and room rates for guests. As a couple, you’ll decide which events are attended by whom.

Sarah Salesses, marketing manager with The Henderson Beach Resort & Spa in Destin, provided a sample schedule for a long weekend.

Thursday could consist of a welcome party. Begin Friday with a pool or beach day complete with umbrella, beach chair and cabana rentals and end with an on-site rehearsal dinner. Wake up Saturday to room service and getting ready as a bridal party, pictures, the ceremony, cocktail hour, the reception and afterparty all on property. Conclude the extended weekend on Sunday with a farewell brunch.

“When couples arrive, they never have to leave,” Salesses said.

“Our team is happy to coordinate

36 NORTHWESTFLORIDAWEDDINGS.NET DALTON YOUNG FILMS & PHOTOGRAPHY RYAN MANTHEY, PURE 7 STUDIOS

a schedule of activities like a spa day, cocktail hour at the rooftop bar or private event in Primrose, our signature dining experience.”

Add to this schedule at the front or back end. As a couple, you can plan to arrive a few days early to complete errands and enjoy some alone time before guests arrive. After the wedding, stay a day or so to relax, make it your mini-honeymoon, or enjoy a full honeymoon without changing venues.

Plan for your bachelor or bachelorette parties to be earlier in the week. For a bachelorette party, plan to sip cocktails poolside, indulge in spa treatments and explore the area’s shops, restaurants and watering holes. For a bachelor party, spend your days at the pool or beach or enjoy onsite or nearby golf courses, raise toasts at local breweries and dine at some of the best restaurants in the region.

“A full pre- and post-wedding itinerary is customizable to fit the specific interests of

each group — a welcoming bonfire on the beach, a farewell brunch, spa treatments, yoga along the Gulf coast, various dining experiences, group volleyball tournaments on the beach and more can all be part of the celebrations,” said Angela Kramer, the wedding and special event manager at Hilton Sandestin Beach Golf Resort & Spa in Destin.

Resorts, including Sandestin Golf and Beach Resort in Miramar Beach, provide a free tram service that carries passengers to The Village of Baytowne Wharf with its shopping, dining, kid’s activities and nightlife; four golf courses; Hotel Effie with Ara rooftop bar; the tennis center; minigolf; and of course, the Gulf of Mexico.

The beauty of beach resorts and hotels is they exist to make the guest experience as easy and enjoyable as possible with a multitude of amenities and extras to make your stay special. Beach bonfire with your bridal party? Gather around. Bottle of

champagne for the happy couple? Coming right up. Beach umbrella? You say where.

The Oyster Bay Boutique Hotel in Pensacola offers the unique experience of a weekend buyout.

“The weekend buyout means the couple and their guests have the entire property to themselves for the weekend or longer,” said Mallory Studer, general manager of Oyster Bay Boutique Hotel. “This allows couples to take advantage of the extra time together with a welcome cocktail reception, on-site themed rehearsal dinner, the big day itself and a wrap-up breakfast or brunch. A wedding weekend buyout gives couples the opportunity to make memories all weekend.”

Most beach hotels and resorts have wedding planners on staff who help coordinate your entire stay and connect you with their list of vendors. Many properties are all-inclusive and can meet every wedding-related need. In most cases, there are multiple venue options should weather interfere and make it necessary for you to move your beach ceremony indoors.

Weddings and vacations are two occasions that most people never want to end. An end will come, but extend your stay and the bliss as long as possible. ▪

BRICKS & BRASS Tallahassee

“Due to COVID, we had to make many adjustments to our original wedding plans. We initially planned to have a large wedding but ended up having an intimate yacht wedding in Tampa. Since a lot of our family members were unable to attend due to COVID, we knew we really wanted to have a celebration on our one-year wedding anniversary. Even though we were already married, the Bricks & Brass staff wanted us to experience the day we had always dreamed of having.

“The day was everything we could have imagined. We selected Bricks & Brass as our venue because we fell in love with the space when we saw it online. The staff went above and beyond by coordinating everything with the vendors. They took all our directions and executed everything without an issue. We didn’t have any concerns throughout the day and were able to just enjoy.” —

BRICKS & BRASS Tallahassee

“Bricks and Brass provided a perfect wedding venue unlike any wedding we have previously seen or attended. We were able to have the best of both worlds with a beautiful outdoor ceremony followed by an intimate indoor reception. The modern style of the space also utilized the industrial feel of the historic downtown building built in 1947 to create a unique venue that everyone loved.

“Kendyl Smith, the Catering and Events Manager, was ready to help us in any way needed. From deciding if this space was right for us, to the way we folded our napkins, she helped every step of the way. She even became our day-of coordinator and ensured our wedding day ran perfectly!” — Adair Horton, Tallahassee, Florida

“I wanted to have an outside ceremony and an indoor reception, and Four Points by Sheraton could provide that and many other services for a reasonable price. My planner was awesome. She helped me in every aspect, starting with planning the details to execution of every wedding day detail. She worked with us on pricing for the food menu, made suggestions on decor and was always available. The whole encounter made the wedding planning less stressful.

GOVERNORS CLUB

“I wanted a venue in Tallahassee that felt classy and was downtown. The Governors Club and John Gandy Events fit my weddingnight vision perfectly. I also loved that they had their own in-house bartending and catering, especially since our wedding was on a holiday. It made the planning process so much easier. We didn’t have to hustle around to find other vendors to fill those roles. The staff went above and beyond to provide great service. They were friendly and had what we needed before we had to ask!

“About two weeks before the wedding, we had the idea of having oysters at the reception. Without much of a heads up, the team at the Governors Club made it happen. We also had a bourbon tasting bar on the outdoor porch. We deferred to the staff, and they made great selections. Our guests loved it.” — Lilly Erickson, Tallahassee, Florida

“Before my husband and I got married, many of our dates and special occasions were at The Edison. We selected The Edison because of the memories we shared there as well as how beautiful the space is. We had a brunch wedding, which paired perfectly with the abundance of natural lighting from the windows. We loved having access to Cascades Park and the Beer Garden for family photos.

“Kate Biel, the event planner at The Edison, was incredibly helpful, making our day look exactly the way we wanted. She went through all the fine details with us, eased our minds and was always quick to answer questions. She was so flexible and accommodating, from dietary restrictions to rearranging locations for events due to rain. We couldn’t be happier to have chosen The Edison. The best part is that we can go back and dine there whenever we want to remember all the fun of our wedding.” — Rebecca Hodges,

tenders can be passed. Doughnut or soft pretzel offerings work well at an exit.

On-the-go options include french fry cones, macaroni and cheese cups, pre-bagged cookies or other treats, boxed mini-pizzas, bagged popcorn or boxed charcuterie.

Roche and Justin Chiricos, owner and executive chef of Catering Capers in Tallahassee, agree that late-night options typically fall into two categories: sweets and comfort foods.

Keep the Party Going with

LATE NIGHT BITES

“Many of our brides choose to offer one or two passed, filling hors d’oeuvres at the end of the night like our scrumptious minichicken biscuits with honey butter, our chicken and waffles drizzled with local honey or mini-cheeseburgers,” Chiricos said.

Handheld and bite-sized offerings delight revelers

The DJ has cued up the final songs, the bar is at last call and preparations for your grand exit are being made. Many libations have been consumed, and the calories from dinner were burned off on the dance floor. Fries and cheeseburger sliders are being passed on silver platters. Guests gratefully smile between bites.

Late-night bites are not a new notion but one that’s back and bigger with weddings becoming more experiential than ever.

“Food has become more aesthetically pleasing in the last 10 years and has become more than a necessity, resulting in something like an interactive experience,” said Samantha Roche, director of events and operations at Andrew’s Catering in Tallahassee.

Roche said the promise of late-night snacks is an effective way to get guests to stick around well after the ceremony. Presentation of the food can be an event in itself. Roche points to a wedding Andrew’s Catering planned that had a ballpark theme complete with a popcorn machine and fry cones in red-and-white striped containers with the couple’s monogram printed on them.

The food is typically served in the last 30 minutes of the evening or as the guests are departing. Many couples opt to give out food instead of traditional wedding favors.

Snacks can be served in many ways. Serve-your-own sundae or build-yourown hotdog stations or taco bars would be best offered buffet-style. Miniature grilled cheese sandwiches, pizza slices or chicken

Chiricos noted that individualized grilled pizzas allowing the clients to select their own toppings are consistently a hit.

For those who wish to keep the party going, Chiricos adds, “It seems that the food items the couples choose are ones that soak up some of the libations they have been enjoying. Several of them have selected espresso shots with mini-doughnut holes or espresso coffee with a scoop of vanilla bean ice cream.”

End of the evening snacks can be an extension of your dinner theme. If your meal was Mexican or Spanish, consider empanadas, taquitos or churros. Italian foods include bruschetta bites or cannoli. To follow up a Chinese meal, consider egg rolls, dumplings or customized fortune cookies.

“Late night snacks are intended to be a fun experience that give couples a lot more creative liberty and room to play than dinner menus allow,” Roche said. “These bites are a way to infuse your personality and further customize your wedding.”

On your wedding day, dance and drink the night away knowing your sweet tooth will be indulged and your midnight cravings met. ▪

Bridal Beauty

Planners and artists talk styles cascading from the runway to the aisle

If there’s an aspect of my wedding day I would have pondered for years had I not had a timeline, it would have been my wedding day look. I adored every ornate lace layer of my dress, and I’ve never felt more like a goddess than I did having my hair and makeup done. But two years later, I still think about all the looks I could have chosen. Luckily, I get to walk down the aisle vicariously as the editor of this magazine. Whether fashion is your passion or you don’t know where to begin, the dress stylists, hair stylists and makeup artists of Northwest Florida are attuned to what’s trending.

Bridal Style

SLEEK AND SIMPLE

“The biggest trend we are seeing this year is our clean, simple elegant bride,” said Brooke White, owner of White Weddings in Tallahassee.

Clean lines and smooth fabrics such as silk, satin, crepe and chiffon are popular. Bodices may be without lace, jewels, beading or appliques, but that doesn’t equate to boring.

Sheath, A-line and trumpet dresses are streamlined in structure, but they feature bold elements such as slits, low backs and interesting necklines. These elements add a dash of sultry to the simplicity.

“With a clean gown, you truly can accessorize it any way you want, and it is so much fun seeing brides’ personalities shine through that,” said Maggie Matthews, owner o Margaret Ellen Bridal in Inlet Beach.

UNIQUE ADD-ONS, BOLD ACCESSORIES

Whether your dress is a simple silk sheath or an ornate ballgown, distinct additions

54 NORTHWESTFLORIDAWEDDINGS.NET

and standout accessories allow brides to showcase their personalities. Romantic removable cap sleeves. Dramatic capes. A surprising overskirt donned for the reception.

In stores, Matthews is seeing gowns with removable overskirts, sleeves, capes, wings and more. These features allow for multiple looks in one night.

“Be prepared for more elaborate accessories — longer veils, elbow length gloves, big earrings and sparkly heels to show off in slits,” said Kristen Barstow, owner of Vocelle’s Bridal in Tallahassee.

PEARLS AND FLORALS

Femininity is in full force with florals and pearls appearing on dresses and accessories. While often dainty and delicate, these adornments are also showing up in bold ways.

“From pearl scatter veils to dangle pearl earrings to pearl embellishments on the gown itself, pearls are everywhere,” said Barstow. “They’re the perfect touch of classic with all the glam of modernity.”

Trending are floral appliques, threedimensional floral effects woven into dresses or a simple dress with a dramatic floor-length veil.

Hair & Makeup

LIGHT AND LOOSE CURLS

Slightly tousled, but completely intentional, “I woke up like this” curls are showing up everywhere. Whether your stylist creates a beach wave or lets your natural curls thrive, this effortless look pairs well with any wedding style.

“Styles are more lived in,” said Sherrie Clark, owner o Fuel Salon + Store in Tallahassee. “We curl and pin up and then go back to softly let pieces naturally fall.”

Clark suggests the following styles: twists or braids with cascading curls, sweeping curls gathered and pinned at the crown or big curls gathered in a low pony allowing the hair to hang in the open space at the back of your dress.

SLEEK BACK

Allison Viviano, executive beauty director and makeup artist with Destin/30A Mobile Beauty Box, notes that sleek modern styles such as chignons and power ponytails are also popular, especially for brides with a more minimalistic style.

Picture middle parts sleeked into a chignon or bun at the nape of the neck or a teased high pony with volume at the crown.

DEWEY AND GLOWING

Brides are loving the no-makeup makeup look, enhancing their natural beauty. This approach spurns heavy foundation, fake lashes and bold eyes and lips. Instead, it embraces natural features — radiant, highlighted cheekbones, neutral mattes on the eyes, brushed brows, individual lash clusters and soft lip shades.

“Brides right now are loving the natural glam look, which includes focusing on the contour and highlight to give that dewy, smooth, glowing complexion we all desire,” said Brittany Sigler, owner and master artist at Destin/30A Mobile Makeup Box. This look further enhances that already-present wedding-day glow. ▪

SOUTH LAUREL FARM WEDDINGS & EVENTS Baker

“We selected South Laurel Farm for our wedding venue because of its availability and their amenities. They allowed us to come to the venue as many times as we wished before our special day, which helped with the planning, and they were very accommodating of our wishes. We were able to start setting up the day before, a huge stress reliever, and have our rehearsal and rehearsal dinner at the same location.

“We loved the different areas on the property including the pond, the giant oak tree, the old and new barn, the porch with the rocking chairs, the field behind the event barn with the tall Southern pines and the vineyard. The venue just has so much to offer. South Laurel Farm really wanted our day to be special. The staff gets to know you as a couple and works with you oneon-one to put your vision into reality.” —

Garden Party Style

Romance and whimsy amid the hedges

Whimsical wisteria floats above as you make your way, teacup in hand, through the hedges to guests adorned in pastel ruffles and pretty floral prints. It may seem you’ve taken a step back in time to Regency-era Great Britain, but in reality, you are at a wedding in 2022 or 2023.

Garden party-themed weddings and related events are newly popular due to several factors. Since 2020, more couples have opted to conduct their nuptials outdoors due to COVID-19. Too, we have become fascinated with the original garden party lovers, the British, via television shows, most notably Bridgerton, and coverage of royal weddings.

“It’s a classic event, timeless in many ways,” said John Gandy, owner of John Gandy Events. “In a time before venues, ballrooms and church halls, many people gathered in beautiful gardens and hosted

family get-togethers and celebrations utilizing the many beautiful elements of their garden.”

Gandy said there are key elements to creating a garden party: utilizing natural surroundings as backdrops; an abundance of florals; soft, subtle lighting; a themed cocktail; linens and textures; and games such as croquet, badminton or cornhole.

Gandy’s services are available throughout the country, but with his base being in Tallahassee, he often finds himself designing event spaces in the parks and gardens found throughout that city. Notable locations that would be ideal for garden-themed weddings include Maclay Gardens, Goodwood Museum and Gardens, Dorothy B. Oven Park, Shiloh Farms Church and Barn and the Old Willis Dairy Farm.

“Tallahassee’s unique charm and style is derived from the undeniably pretty and often unexpected features found

62 NORTHWESTFLORIDAWEDDINGS.NET

in Florida’s capital,” said Renee Jones, public relations and marketing specialist with Visit Tallahassee. “The area’s rolling hills, canopy roads and moss-draped oaks as well as its natural beauty and historic gardens make for breathtaking backdrops for garden weddings in any season.”

In Baker, Florida, the 15-acre South Laurel Farm offers an abundance of trees that will provide shade for your tea tables and a green space in front of the reception barn that is ideal for lawn games.

“When I think of a garden party, I visualize an outdoor space surrounded by lush green areas as well as small nooks that could lend themselves to beautifully decorated tables with great food,” said Beth Clary, owner of South Laurel Farm.

It doesn’t offer a craggy coastline, but Northwest Florida has some of the world’s most beautiful beaches. If a state park or garden is not available or you’re seeking an option with outdoor and indoor options, many resort properties have scenic outdoor settings.

“The WaterColor community is surrounded by our beautifully manicured parks, so it is the perfect backdrop to a garden wedding,” said Cheryl Walton, senior wedding sales manager at WaterColor Inn & Resort. “The gardens are a rainbow of vibrantly colored flowers, bird houses and the sound of water trickling from the fountains as you walk down the pebble pathways.”

If you opt for an indoor location for your wedding or must bring it inside due to weather, there are ways to bring the outdoor elements inside with florals, menus and dress codes.

Florals real and manmade can make appearances on bridesmaids’ dresses, groomsmen’s bowties, wedding dresses, in hair, on cakes, linens and tableware and as part of the dress code. There’s not a spot where a bloom wouldn’t be suitable.

Should you select a garden-themed bridal shower or seated dinner reception, much of the look revolves around what’s on the table. Walton suggests that garden style often includes custom floral-patterned linens, napkins, tableware, fine china and colored glassware. A dainty teacup may be used for tea or unexpectedly for a cocktail.

For a daytime soiree, offer teatime fare with finger sandwiches, fresh vegetables and fruits and miniature desserts. At a rehearsal dinner or reception, go with farmfresh fare and whipped sugary confections.

Besides lots of lace, floral and brocade clothing and decor, color palettes are key. Think blush, lilac, dusty rose, pale yellow, sage and powder blue. For decor, explore gold accents such as candlesticks, chandeliers, vintage French-style furniture, bell jar centerpieces, calligraphy on signage and a flower petal toss as you exit.

If you often find yourself dreaming of the romance and elegance of a Jane Austin novel, if you find yourself anxiously awaiting Lady Whistledown’s next letter or love nature’s natural beauty, a garden wedding might be just what you fancy. ▪

Flower Power

Big, bold arrangements are cropping up

We’re in a bloom boom. Florals are showing up in every aspect of wedding decor, extending beyond bouquets and boutonnieres to setting the scene in major ways at ceremonies and receptions.

Since 2020, the ways in which we use flowers have multiplied. Chelsea Finch, wedding specialist with A Country Rose Florist in Tallahassee, correlates smaller wedding sizes due to the pandemic with an uptick in florals.

“Couples were able to focus more of their energy and budget on those decorating details, and this set the bar high for floral design,” Finch said.

Angela Smith, wedding and events coordinator with SunQuest, noted that the number of weddings declined due to the pandemic, and supplies were often scarce. Returning to normalcy, couples want bigger, better celebrations that include grand floral statements. From ceremony to reception, they may include arbors, archways, tall risers, hanging installations,

floral monograms, floral walls, floral rings, staircase installs and more.

“A floral installation adds an element of art to the wedding,” Smith said. “A large floral installation brings more than just decoration to the venue space. It also pulls out feelings of appreciation and awe from the guests.”

In most cases, if you dream it, florists have the capacity and creativity to do it. Musing brides have brought about inverted gardens, whimsical canopies of floating flower tendrils, human-sized

wreathes and chandeliers made up of blooms. A look cropping up everywhere is the mix of modern and feminine. Some examples are rustic wooden beams wrapped in vines or steel structures strung with florals.

Moving beyond the altar, large installations are being further utilized on the dance floor, at the cake table, over the sweetheart table and as reception photo backdrops.

In choosing flowers, color, depth and texture are all considerations.

Soft pinks, muted blues and light greens provide stunning contrasts to magenta, cobalt and sunflower yellow. A few years back, all white was all the rage, but today’s couples want bigger and bolder — and also brighter.

Create depth by putting smaller flowers and greenery behind the stars of floral arrangements. Texture is supplied by the ruffled edges of peonies or the fluff of pampas grass.

Ellie Gunnels, florist with Missy Gunnels Florals, suggests using longstem flowers such as snapdragons and delphinium as the base of large arrangements. Then layer in large flowers that act as statement pieces, she suggests.

“Peonies, ranunculus, dahlias, David Austin roses, anemones and some hydrangeas are at the top of the price list for their wow-factor,” Gunnels said. “Hydrangeas, mums, roses and daisies are beautiful and provide the most bang for the buck.”

Florals elevate weddings of all sizes. As Gunnels notes, statement florals are no longer reserved solely for large wedding celebrations.

Flowers symbolize romance and tender moments. Showcase your day — in full bloom. ▪
