A Guide to Seasonal Blooms

Love is in full bloom — especially this simply stunning bouquet held by a beautiful, boho bride. Jennifer G Photography took this photograph as part of a styled shoot, intended to showcase that boho weddings can also be upscale, chic and modern. Jennifer was inspired by the grand pillars of The Henderson Beach Resort, which she felt symbolized the power of wedding day love. This is juxtaposed by the sweetness of the protea bouquet arranged by Shaw Lake Farms and the delicate lace detailing of the dress. This cover is intended to inspire couples to seek the whimsical, the creative, the romantic and the true to you.

from the editor

I have been the editor of Northwest Florida Weddings Magazine for four years now. For all four of those years, I have loved the same man. The first year began with an initial attraction to his charismatic energy, his passion for music and his devotion to pursuing his dreams. That first year consisted of Mexican and margarita dates, exchanging “I love yous” in my childhood home and late-night talks about the lives we wanted. In the second year, we set out to find those ideal lives — quitting jobs, moving states, leaving friends and family, all to have the freedom to create. Looking back, it was a risk but a risk we had no doubt we would make with one another. Year three, our best and worst year. Our dreamed-about jobs — him as a musician, me, a writer. Buying our first house, painting the walls and scrubbing the floors to turn it into a home. Me on my knees at his hospital bedside, thanking God for saving his life because I couldn’t live mine without him. Him on one knee, asking me for forever. The fourth year has just begun. I am grateful already for all that it will teach us, the ways that it will grow us and the memories it will contain. The only certainty is this, on December 12, 2020, I will marry the man I have been writing about for four years. I came to be the editor of a weddings magazine because my passion is to write and tell the stories of others. This job has allowed me to tell the best stories of all: love stories. It is my absolute honor to be entrusted with each couple’s stories. In being exposed to so many breathtaking and creative weddings, it only made sense that I began to think of my own. I will be honest — I resisted the urge to plan because I wanted to do so with my partner. Above all, it is our wedding. Not mine, my family’s, my friends’ or my planner’s (they totally know and respect this, by the way). It is all too easy to forget this with so many weddings to compare to. As I join the ranks of fellow couples that are wedding planning, I encourage us all to be intentional and true to ourselves. We should plan weddings that align with our beliefs, our wildest wishes and, most importantly, the commitments we are making to another person. I hope that within these pages you find inspiration, not comparison. In four years of building relationships with the venues, vendors and photographers within this magazine, I know that each has your best interests in mind. They serve each couple with a promise of quality, a commitment to excellence and the keen ability to listen closely. When it became my turn to plan my own wedding, I knew with certainty that I would be married in Northwest Florida and utilize the wonderful wedding service providers in this region. Readers and fellow wedding planning couples, I hope you can feel the love that has been put into these pages. I hope they remind you of the importance of the unwavering commitment and eternal endurance that your wedding day symbolizes. All my best,

Rebecca Padgett, Editor

NORTHWESTFLORIDAWEDDINGS.NET

here is no mistaking the breathtaking beauty of a sunset beach wedding. There is also no mistaking that a beach wedding can result in sand everywhere and unavoidable sweating. If you love the beach but aren’t a sandbetween-your-toes kind of couple, you’re in luck — there’s an abundance of resorts, seaside chapels and historic venues that provide just the right amount of coastal ambience. Northwest Florida is a treasure trove of wedding opportunities because each city contains its own unique attributes. From the beachside ballrooms of Destin resorts to charming historic buildings in downtown Pensacola, the sea breeze is never too far away. The appeal is also in the versatility of options, whether you want a separate ceremony and reception space or an allinclusive option where you and your guests can stay and celebrate. If not directly on the beach, many couples want the shore to be seen from their location or within walking distance. WaterColor Inn & Resort’s property embodies all of the best natural aspects of Northwest Florida, including 500 acres of pristine beaches, longleaf pine forests and a rare coastal dune lake. “WaterColor is ideal for the couple that wants a relaxed, playful and memorable experience that is tailored just for them,” said Cheryl Walton, senior wedding sales manager at WaterColor Inn & Resort. “Most of our brides are looking for a setting in which they can enjoy time with their guests, and doing so outdoors is key for them — whether they’re spending time around a bonfire, dining with a view, paddleboarding or simply enjoying time at the beach.”

One of the most iconic venues in Northwest Florida is The Chapel at Seaside in South Walton. This award-winning chapel, with its stunning urbanist design and picturesque backdrop, is one of the most photographed buildings on 30A, many of those photos being of happy couples. “We chose The Chapel at Seaside because we wanted to get married at the beach — but also in a chapel,” said bride Laura Rogers. “The chapel is absolutely beautiful, charming, quaint and sophisticated. Several of our guests commented they had never been to a chapel with such beautiful natural light nor a reception that felt like a picture in a magazine.” The Chapel at Seaside is the chapel closest to the water in all of Northwest Florida, but there are many beautiful chapels and churches of all denominations throughout the region. Where the beach certainly attracts much attention, Pensacola’s downtown is bustling. Located

just 15 minutes from the beach, Pensacola’s downtown gives both a taste of city and coastal. Downtown Pensacola is perfect for the couple that is drawn to more modern and industrial design for their wedding but wants to relax by the beach after the celebration has commenced. The Palafox House, constructed in 1912, contains the building’s original 20-foot high wood ceilings, exposed brick walls and floor-toceiling windows. “Couples love getting married at the Palafox House due to the historic charm and character of the space,” said Maria Goldberg, director of marketing, public relations and events for the Palafox House. “This is a perfect venue for a destination wedding where guests can enjoy the beach as well as our historic downtown.” While beach weddings will withstand the sands of time, there are a plethora of Northwest Florida venues that embrace the coastal cool vibe. ▪

THE HENDERSON BEACH RESORT & SPA Destin

“The Henderson accommodated our wedding perfectly. The staff was in constant communication with us ensuring that all of our needs were met. This communication happened months in advance, and we never felt as if we were not in complete control of our day. The staff helped us enthusiastically with anything we asked of them. “We selected The Henderson mainly due to the location. We wanted our friends and family coming from the Northwest and Northeast corners of the country to be able to experience the beautiful beaches and scenery that Destin has to offer. We also thought the venue would be ideal for great photographs due to the protected lands bordering the venue.” — Jessica Hurtig, Williamsburg, Virginia PHOTOS BY JENNIFER G PHOTOGRAPHY

HILTON SANDESTIN BEACH GOLF RESORT & SPA Miramar Beach

“While we were dating, we discovered we both grew up going to Hilton Sandestin. We wanted to have our wedding somewhere that was special to us both. We decided we would create new and lasting memories together as one big family at the place where we had made so many fond memories with our individual families as kids. The staff provided nothing but the best hospitality and service during the ceremony and reception. They even went above and beyond to accommodate some of the older members of our family who weren’t able to walk down to the beach by providing a beach wheelchair. ”The most special moment was seeing Jennifer walk down the boardwalk steps and onto the sand. I have always found Jen to be gorgeous, but on that day, in that moment, she was absolutely stunning. “I mean have you seen their hotel? It’s picture perfect. There was really never a question. From day one, The Pearl’s staff was so engaging. They set up welcome calls, check-in calls, provided vendors in the area and were available anytime I requested. Having this wedding halfway across the country from where we live was always a worry to me until I had my first welcome call. I can’t say enough about how easy planning this wedding was at The Pearl. So many little details like tables, chairs, linens, food and cake were included.

ANDREW’S CATERING AT FSU ALUMNI CENTER Tallahassee

“The staff was amazing and truly went above and beyond our expectations. It is an Italian tradition for the mother of the bride to do a cookie table at the wedding. They surprised me with having rustic serving trays to set up the cookies that matched my décor and a beautiful hot chocolate bar for our guests. “Andrew’s was there for the tour of the venue to discuss all of my options for the layout and details about what they would provide. They always responded promptly to our questions, which was such a huge priority for us when picking our venue and caterer. It was a wonderful feeling knowing the staff genuinely cared about us, and that they were there to celebrate with us.” — Jamie Foxwell, Tallahassee, Florida PHOTOS BY BRITTANY MORGAN PHOTOGRAPHY

“We were actually the first couple to get married outside at the beautiful Bricks & Brass venue. I cannot say enough about the level of customer service and special attention we received on and before our big day. We were helped tremendously and tirelessly by Kendyl, Paola and Jordan with decor ideas, seating options, food options and the outline of our ceremony, reception and photography locations. We ended up having a gorgeous ceremony outside and transitioned inside for a memorable reception. We were given endless compliments for choosing Bricks & Brass as our wedding venue. Guests were so impressed with the beautiful lighting, acoustics, bar and the way the brass features perfectly complemented the brick and painted walls. Bold, Beautiful Bridal Trends From jumpsuits to the roaring ‘20s, we’ve got our vision tuned into the bridal trend forecast By Janecia Britt

2019 was defined by the royal wedding, but a new decade is here and we’ve got new trends to prove it. Be ready to see a new modern bride with looks that provide dimension, intrigue and whimsy. If you’re planning a 2020 or 2021 wedding and are about to go shopping for your wedding dress, here’s what you can expect to see arriving at bridal salons. 1. Minimalism to the Max

Less is proving to be more. After the gorgeous bateau neckline of Meghan Markle’s dress flooded our timelines last spring, brides have been running to replicate her simple but gorgeous look. “For our brides who are going for a more simplistic style, it’s all about luxurious fabrics and clean lines this year,” said Kristin Barstow, owner of Vocelle’s Bridal Salon in Tallahassee. “We are seeing this trend across all silhouettes — fit and flare, sheath and a-lines. For these brides, less really is more!” Love the minimalism trend but are concerned with it being too simple? Drum up the drama with a cathedral veil, colorful shoes or a bold lip. 48

the city 2. Jumpsuits

Weddings are no longer about just the ceremony and reception. Brides are looking for standout looks for their engagement party, bridal shower, bachelorette party and postwedding brunch. Cue the jumpsuit. “I think we’ll continue with the trend of pantsuits and jumpsuits for weddings and wedding events like bachelorette parties, showers and more,” said Maggie Mathews, owner of Margaret Ellen Bridal in Rosemary Beach. “Overskirts are definitely in, and pairing an overskirt with a pantsuit or jumpsuit is going to be a real hit.”

WOODLAND FIELDS PHOTOGRAPHY

LILY & SPARROW PHOTO CO.

Whether you’re wearing it down the aisle or to one o many celebrations, a crisp white jumpsuit may be in your future. Not into the trend but want something that stands out? Try another on-trend item like a white suit, silk slip dress or iridescent mini dress, and you’ll be sure to stand out from the crowd.

2 3. 1920’s Inspiration

Barstow agrees, “We are seeing lots of 1920’s inspiration making its way into other details of the wedding, but not so much into the dress yet. Our Great Gatsby inspired brides are using accessories, hair and makeup to add a little Roaring ’20s glam to their look.” Want the Gatsby look for your dress but not sure how to incorporate it? Wear a fringed reception dress or a jeweled headband for your ceremony look. ▪

How could we talk about the 2020s without acknowledging the art deco and Great Gatsby inspiration that seems to be everywhere? While fringe and flapper details haven’t exactly made their way to the runway, the inspiration is still everywhere for brides to be.

THE EDISON RESTAURANT Tallahassee

“My husband and I actually had our entire wedding planned, but when Hurricane Irma hit, we had to rearrange all of our plans and our venue. I frantically began making phone calls, and, just 30 minutes later, I received a call back from The Edison, ensuring me that they would gladly host our wedding. They even allowed us to have our ceremony on their property. Right then, I knew that was what was meant to be for our special day. The day after the hurricane, I met with the staff and began (re)planning our wedding. “Since our wedding was 99 percent planned when we booked with The Edison, they did a phenomenal job of mimicking our prior plans. Rather than making us create a new menu, they simply took our original and said they would make those options, despite them not being on their menu. My husband and I texted our planner almost daily with details about anything from napkins to floor plans, and she made sure every detail was written out. Our wedding ended up being everything we could have dreamed of.” — Vlada Reinhardt, Moscow, Russia PHOTOS BY CHRIS CROUCH

n one of your first dates, maybe your partner gave you a bouquet of your favorite blooms. For major life events, we often commemorate these moments by giving flowers. Flowers are representative of special and sentimental moments, which is all the more reason to incorporate them into your wedding. Flowers are beautiful, natural details that make a big impact. Flowers and foliage heighten our senses by drawing our eyes toward their pretty pops of color, immersing us in pleasing scents and by creating conversation pieces on tablescapes. With so many floral options, it might be overwhelming to consider which will best capture the theme and feeling of such a 60

This is where the importance of hiring a professional comes in. “Hiring a professional floral designer will take the stress out of the day by making everything effective financially and visually,” said Missy Gunnels Kane, owner of Missy Gunnels Flowers. “Giving your florist artistic license will result in getting more for your investment and creating a visual experience that will be remembered by guests.” While they are pretty pieces of the ceremony and reception, they also are living products that should be considered with care. The best way to do so is to educate yourself on florals. As we become more conscious of our environment, many couples are opting for

seasonal and locally sourced flowers as they are the most sustainable options. Genevieve Dimmitt, owner of Azalea Hill Farm in Monticello, Florida, only sources local flowers. “I grow locally and highlight flowers which are in bloom around the time of your wedding,” said Dimmitt. “This eliminates the imported flowers that dominate the industry and rely heavily on synthetic herbicides, fungicides, pesticides, atrocious labor conditions, plastic packaging and emission-causing transport.” Do your research on florists, look through their work and ensure they are someone whose creativity and values you trust. Amaze and Graze Grazing and charcuterie tables are like edible art By Rebecca Padgett 64

NORTHWESTFLORIDAWEDDINGS.NET

razing and charcuterie tables are a sight to behold, and you’ve likely seen them everywhere from a friend’s wedding to your Instagram feed. Arranged with delectable chunks of cheese, a variety of meats and brimming with fruits, spreads, nuts and more, charcuterie displays are almost too pretty to eat … almost. Where much of the appeal is the aesthetic of grazing tables, many adore them for the simple act of grazing — being able to select a few tasty bites before dinner. This experience allows you to savor the flavors without getting too full for the main course. Couples and caterers alike love charcuterie and grazing tables for the ability to arrange, create and build something unique. “No two charcuteries are the same,” said Christopher Holbrook, chef and owner of Signature Catering 30A. “They make for a dramatic and inviting entrance while being easy and versatile. The options are endless and you can do

whatever you want, but you should keep it enticing with more than just meat and cheese.” Grazing options can include cheeses, meats, fresh fruits, dehydrated fruits, nuts, crackers, crostini, olives, pickles, pickled vegetables, fresh vegetables, chocolate, jams, spreads and more. Amanda Morrison, managing partner of Social Catering & Events, agrees that the sky is the limit where charcuterie is concerned, but she also knows there is a formula to a great grazing table. Start with the cheese by selecting four different styles — a soft cheese, like goat or brie; a harder cheese like parmesan or manchego; a bleu cheese; and then something familiar, like a cheddar. The next layer is adding edible garnishes, such as fresh herbs, honey, nuts, crackers, olives and pickled vegetables. Then come the inedible garnishes, such as flowers and greenery. With so much of charcuterie revolving around produce, meats and cheeses, Cara Varn, sales manager of Andrew’s Catering, emphasizes seeking local labels. “We work to utilize both locally sourced and exotic items which means no two displays will ever be the same,” said Varn. “Many of the most delicious items are seasonal, meaning that you can curate your menu

and design with the season. We work closely with local farmers to ensure the highest product quality.” A fun yet informative option is to label the cheeses with where they come from, along with flavor profiles and wine pairings. Having the cheese in different shapes, selecting an array of bright-colored foods and having different heights and layers will create a lush and vibrant display. “The belief that we eat with our eyes first is very true, and grazing tables always have a ‘wow’ factor for guests that is hard to achieve with other menu items,” said Morrison. “The beauty of grazing tables is it’s a rare food display that brings together so many vibrant colors and textures that all photograph well. We like to call it the ‘Pinstagram Effect.’ ” Grazing tables are a wonderful welcome to a reception. Many couples opt to utilize them during cocktail hour because they promote mingling while munching. No one will complain if photos run a bit long when there are tastefully presented options alongside refreshing libations. Another option is to have several themed stations for your main course, charcuterie being one of them. Beautiful and bountiful, grazing tables and charcuterie boards have a staying power in our minds, mouths and Instagram photos. ▪

Picturesque » presentation and

delectable delights, it doesn’t get much better than a grazing table. Presentation is key when arranging a charcuterie experience, whether it be decorative platters, wooden risers, different-sized dishes or sprigs of greenery and florals.

United You Stand

From tying the knot to planting trees, incorporating unity into the ceremony By Rebecca Padgett

P

lanning a wedding exposes you to all sorts of styles, fabrics, colors, tastes and even napkins that you never thought you would care about. The details are beautiful and important and very much compose your most beloved day, but it’s all too easy to get lost in them, further losing what your wedding day is truly about.

This definition is straightforward and a bit short when we consider what all marriage actually encompasses, but at the core, the word that says it all is “united.” Above all, a marriage is a union between two people. As the driving force of your marriage, unity should be honored and recognized. Many couples choose to do so through a unity ceremony. “I like the symbolism of the unity activity because it’s another added layer to the ceremony, which is all about your commitment to each other and your uniqueness as a couple, but it must make sense to you as a couple,” said John Gandy, owner of John Gandy Events. 78

NORTHWESTFLORIDAWEDDINGS.NET

SARAH & PAUL PHOTOGRAPHY

Marriage (noun): the state of being united as spouses in a consensual and contractual relationship recognized by law.

LILY & SPARROW PHOTO CO.

You don’t have to limit yourself to » just one unity ceremony. As a couple,

LILY & SPARROW PHOTO CO.

your ceremony is completely up to you as far as what you want to emphasize about your love and the commitment you are making.

Gandy believes that this is the ideal opportunity to begin new traditions. This tradition could be the unity between the couple, but it could also include unity ceremonies between parents, family members and other special attendees. Diane Bardhi, owner and lead planner of Sweet Tea Events in Tallahassee, agrees with Gandy that the unity ceremony must be meaningful to the couple as it’s a way to showcase your backgrounds and beliefs. One of her favorite unity ceremonies included a couple that planted a tree using dirt from each of their childhood homes. Sand pouring is similar. Couples take

turns pouring sand into a vase. The sand often comes from locations that are special to them. This could be especially fitting for a beach wedding. Other couples literally tie a knot to symbolize the strength and interwovenness of their union. Handfasting, a Celtic tradition, also involves knots. The bride and groom’s right hands are bound together during the ceremony to represent their commitment to one another. A lasso ceremony, also called “el lazo” is a Spanish, Mexican and Filipino tradition. The officiant drapes a floral garland or rosary around the couple, twisting it into an infinity symbol. The couple can then save the lasso as a cherished keepsake. Jewish weddings often include circling ceremonies, in which the couple circles each other seven times, symbolic of a circle of protection each is placing around the other and the creation of a new family as one. A meaningful way to encapsulate a day is to wax-seal love letters that can be opened on a milestone anniversary. As a couple, you can take turns putting meaningful objects, such as photos, notes and other sentiments, in a box to reflect on at a designated date. Other unity ceremony options are lighting a unity candle, releasing a paper lantern, blending paint, wine pouring, puzzle pieces and unity knot tying. Where your wedding will be filled with good times involving friends and family, a unity ceremony should be a significant moment shared solely as a couple entering into a forever union. ▪

Over the Moon Celebrate the big moments with small trips

P

lanning a wedding can get stressful, and typically your honeymoon is your reward for the hard work of putting together the party of a lifetime. However, the tide is turning. No longer are couples waiting for their nuptials to get away and spend quality time together. 86

NORTHWESTFLORIDAWEDDINGS.NET

Enter in moons, from an engagement-moon to a babymoon, mini-moons are becoming just as frequent as honeymoons. These trips are typically shorter in length and at a closer distance than a honeymoon. Here, we break down all the “moons and share our picks for the perfect place to unplug for every occasion.

Engagement-Moon

This is a romantic trip taken shortly after getting engaged to celebrate the happy news together. You’ll want somewhere where you can bask in the joy of your impending nuptials. Seaside Does anything sound more perfect than renting a cozy cottage that’s within walking distance to the beach? We didn’t think so. Let the sea breeze wash over you in idyllic Seaside with your new fiancé. You’ll want to do nothing but spend lazy days roaming the shops and soaking up the sun. Rent bikes to explore the town center where you can sip coffee, shop local boutiques and bookshops and end the day with dinner and cocktails at sunset. Pensacola History, beaches and a bustling downtown, Pensacola has all you could wish for in an adventure together. Palafox Street, a shopping and dining destination, holds the title of one of the “10 Great Streets in America.”

Mini-Moon

Saving for a house and can’t afford a huge overseas trip? Not sure you’ll have the time off work? Want to do a small, relaxing trip rather than a grand adventure? Then the mini-moon is for you. This small honeymoon usually takes place over a long weekend and at a closer to home location. You’ll want somewhere intimate with options that cater to just the two of you. Destin/Miramar Beach Destin provides some of the best resorts in the world, just steps away from the iconic sugar white sands and emerald waves. The Henderson Beach Resort & Spa, Hilton Sandestin Beach Golf Resort & Spa and Tops’l Beach & Racquet Resort are just some of the many resorts offering

experiences that cater to the couple from massages to golfing to paddleboard adventures. Destin is known for its variety of shopping and dining options. Panama City Beach For the action and activityoriented couple, Panama City Beach might spark your interest with its variety of water activities, parks, shopping and packed events calendar. Paddle, canoe, swim or fish at Shell Island, and then enjoy a romantic sunset cruise at St. Andrew’s Bay. Enjoy the great Northwest Florida outdoors at Aaron Bessant and Frank Brown parks. Shop ’til you drop at Pier Park.

Baby-Moon

This trip celebrates your last vacation before you bring home a new bundle of joy. You’ll want somewhere with luxury and serenity to enjoy a little quiet time with your partner before your life changes for the better. Rosemary Beach Rosemary Beach’s distinct architecture has a French Quarter by the ocean feel with wraparound porches and a town center bustling with activity. The Pearl at Rosemary Beach is prime for relaxation. Imagine waking up, going out to your private balcony and taking in the expansive views of the Gulf. Spend afternoons lounging under complimentary oversized umbrellas and chairs, perfect for you and your growing belly. Alys Beach What’s more soothing than the serene sight of crisp white stucco walls and brilliant blue waters? Alys Beach is the ultimate destination for simple luxury. Stay in one of the gorgeous rental properties and explore the nearby Town Center with boutiques, dining and public green spaces. ▪
