A NOTE FROM THE CEO

RECONNECTING WELCOME TO THE SECOND edition of “Where You’d Rather Be” magazine. Last year, my team and I celebrated Newman-Dailey Resort Properties' 30th Anniversary. Part of the fun of that commemorative year was reminiscing and hearing stories from our extended family of friends and clients about their experiences at the beach. Among the stories were tales of first beach vacations, anniversary celebrations, birthdays, kids and grandkids' first steps, and the list goes on. The underlying theme of all the stories was time spent together at the beach is a timeless tradition, which creates precious memories. Whether you’re a local or a visitor, relaxing and reconnecting at the beach is a cherished activity. We’ve learned that it is the people that give our community personality. The welcoming shop owner, the friendly bartender, the gregarious artist, and the experienced boat captain are among the many individuals who are the fabric of our coastal community and bring our beaches to life. In this edition of Where You’d Rather Be, we catch up with cover artist Gordie Hinds and introduce many other friendly faces in South Walton and Destin while also celebrating Destin’s heritage and history. We hope you enjoy this issue and invite you to share your stories and memories with us on our Facebook, Twitter and Instagram pages or tag your local experiences #destinvacation or #southwaltonvacation so we can share in your special moments and hideaways. See you @ the beach!

COVER ARTIST

CATCHING UP WITH GORDIE HINDS GORDIE HINDS’ ARTWORK graced the cover of the inaugural issue of “Where You’d Rather Be” magazine. Due to the incredibly positive response, the publishing team approached him for an encore performance. The current cover art was inspired by a photograph of three women walking down the beach near Gulf Place, and everyone agreed it was a scene that was “where you’d rather be.” In working with Gordie, we wanted to know what was new. Here’s what we learned: What have you been up to since painting the cover art for Where You’d Rather Be magazine? Well, I got married. I met Susan on a flight from Atlanta and now I have a wife, step-daughter, a cat and dog. Life is good. We recently returned from a trip to the Bahamas. It was nice to have some downtime. I almost caught up on my reading stack. How is business? Business has been great. I have a long list of commissions, several of which I’m working on right now. I moved my gallery from Seaside to a studio-gallery in Gulf Place in Santa Rosa Beach. It’s been a positive move for me as having an actual studio in-house is far more practical. I don’t sleep much so I’m usually in the studio early. Some of my customers, who are equally nocturnal, know that I'm in the studio as early as 1 or 2 a.m. They also know that I have coffee, adult beverages and there is always a baseball game on. Where are you finding inspiration for your art? While I do find this area to be a target-rich environment, I am often drawn to subject matter or techniques that I haven't worked 10

BE MAGAZINE

with previously. I have always worked with pen-and-ink and watercolors, but mostly for sketch purposes. Pretty much I get them to a stage where I can see the end-game and then apply the concept to canvas. Susan has encouraged me to complete some of these into actual, finished pieces. When I have time, I enjoy the freedom to do stuff not in my purview. Black and white, actually monochromatic stuff is challenging and fun to do. I like old black and white photos so I’ve been dabbling. Have you picked up any new hobbies? Well, I’m still fishing, but pretty much from the beach, which is pretty good actually. I had three boats but sold them all. It’s a temporary setback. I’m in the market for a boat. AND I need to get all my fishing gear out of the garage. We read that you were honored as South Walton Acrylic Artist of the Year. Congratulations! How did you feel about receiving that honor? I’m not good at that type of thing. My wife and our friend, Steve Barber, told me I had to go to the Visit South Walton annual meeting. I had no idea I was being recognized. It is an honor but I prefer to not be on stage. While Gordie may prefer to be behind the curtain, we're proud to place his artwork in the limelight for many to enjoy. If you’re in the neighborhood, the Gordie Hinds Studio is located in Gulf Place off Highway 30A at 90 Spires Land #9A, Santa Rosa Beach, Florida. Stop by during “randomly open” (actually on the door) “we may be at the beach, y’know?” business hours or call for an appointment (850) 687-7037.

WATER STEWARDS BY SARAH DAVIS

WHILE MILLIONS of visitors each year vacation along the Emerald Coast to experience the world-class beaches, very few know the vast array of aquatic wonders that exist just outside their back door. In fact, the Florida Panhandle ranks in the top five for being one of the richest biodiversity hot spots in North America. For example, Walton County alone hosts extraordinary ecosystems that are home to numerous and unusual native plants and animals. Besides its white sand beaches, the County boasts a number of freshwater springs, the Choctawhatchee River (Florida’s fourth largest in volume), Choctawhatchee Bay, many creeks and streams, and the extremely rare coastal dune lakes. The Choctawhatchee Basin Alliance (CBA), a local nonprofit organization responsible for sustaining healthy local waterways, has spent the last 20 years monitoring, researching, educating and restoring the Choctawhatchee Watershed. By promoting water stewardship through community involvement and collaboration, the CBA works to ensure this precious resource is available for future generations. From volunteer opportunities and public outreach events, to watershed education in local schools, CBA has stewardship down to a science. Residents and visitors to the region play an important part in helping the CBA protect and preserve the waterways. Here’s some easy ways to become a good steward of our waterways: 1 Leave No Trace Marine debris, or trash, left behind by 12

beach-goers and outdoor enthusiasts can pose a major threat to wildlife and the overall health of the watershed. Plastic wrappers, soda cans and fishing line among other items can take hundreds of years to breakdown in the water. Birds, fish and sea turtles mistake these items for food and can become entangled, causing serious harm or even death. Remember the “ABC’s of water stewardship” — Always Be Conscious of what you leave behind. 2 Support O.Y.S.T.E.R. Partner Restaurants CBA’s Offer Your Shell To Enhance Restoration Recycling Program utilizes otherwise thrown-out oyster shells from local seafood restaurants to construct oyster reefs for restoration in Choctawhatchee Bay. Dine at one of the participating partner restaurants and feel good about eating as many oysters as your heart desires; it helps restore the bay. For more information about the O.Y.S.T.E.R. Recycling Program and a list of participating restaurants, visit basinalliance.org. 3 Try Roads Less Traveled These eco-adventures showcase the biodiversity that gives Walton County its claim to fame. From paddleboarding in a coastal dune lake to hiking the untouched wetprairies of a local preserve, CBA’s Eco Tours offer something for everyone. To discover roads less traveled and CBA’s eco-adventures, book a South Walton eco tour, visit basinalliance.org.

A GLASS ACT

UNLIKE GLASS ARTIST MARY HONG, the art form she works in is fragile and, according to her, people are afraid of it. Hong, who owns Mary Hong Studio/Gallery in Grayton Beach, admits to dabbling in many art mediums. And though she creates everything from paintings, nightlights and jewelry with glass, her current passion marries her fascination with glass with her intrigue of found objects on the Emerald Coast. The result is dynamic, glass-encrusted mosaics that turn surfboards and paddleboards into stunning art storyboards. Having lived in Hawaii for 14 years, the coastal theme is a natural for Hong, who moved to Destin in 2004. So is being an artist. “I have been an artist since I was two,” she says. “I’ve gotten to make art every day.” Hong credits her sense of color to her interior design degree and her ease of

composition to her graphic design talent. A lifelong traveler, Hong says a trip to Athens, Greece, fired up her passion for glass art. A serendipitous stroll into a bead shop captivated her imagination, and lessons from a master bead artist helped seal her fate. “I love glass. It’s shiny, sparkly and ever-changing with the light,” she says. Art shows have given Hong welcome visibility. “You get to talk to the people who buy your art and get feedback,” she says. “The camaraderie with fellow artists is wonderful.” It’s crystal clear that Hong is one shining example of the thriving art scene in South Walton. Her work is on display at her gallery in Grayton Beach, and she offers classes at the Shard Shop next door where art lovers can create their own glass art treasure.

DIGGING DEEP UNEARTHING THE UNTOUCHED SECRETS, HISTORY OF NORTHWEST FLORIDA ARCHAEOLOGY BY MARY LESLIE DR. JUDY BENSE, president of Pensacola’s University of West Florida (UWF), is able to seamlessly jump from discussing 2,000-year-old villages and Spanish colonial settlements to conversing about Pensacola’s emerging cybersecurity sector and Northwest Florida’s aim to become a tech industry leader. An anthropologist by training, she is known for her contributions to the field of archaeology, a branch of anthropology, having founded the Anthropology/ Archaeology program at UWF, establishing the university’s Archaeology Institute and founding the Florida Public Archaeology Network.

Bense notes that the Emerald Coast is rich in archaeological finds versus other areas of the state where many sites of significance have been lost to development. Area finds of note include …

THE WINE COOLER Bense and her team from the University of West Florida discovered a circular hole that had been excavated deep into the water table in downtown Pensacola, which contained a frame of small logs that held a nearly intact wine bottle. Nothing of its kind had ever been found before, and archaeologists believe that the hole was

not a water well but rather a sort of cooler, similar to a root cellar. Based on her research, she believes that this storage compartment belonged to, and may have been constructed by, Spaniard Luis de Ullate in the 1750s and is very likely the oldest “wine cooler” in all of Spanish Florida. In 1992, University of West Florida archaeologists discovered a 300-yearold Spanish fragata in Pensacola Bay. On Sept. 3, 1705, the ship was to leave Pensacola for Veracruz but was run aground by a hurricane and broke to pieces. Archaeologists believe the ship is The Rosario, an 18th-century ship designed to escort Spanish cargo vessels, because of where it was found, its massive size and the materials it was carrying.

CAMP WALTON In 1861, a Confederate militia called the Walton Guards established Camp Walton in modern-day Fort Walton Beach along Santa Rosa Sound. Guards mounted a cannon along the shore of the 18

narrow waterway to attack gunboats, but it was later dismantled and buried so that Union soldiers wouldn’t be able to use it against them. The cannon was discovered in 1932 and remains the largest artifact ever found from this militia. It can be seen today along U.S. Highway 98 at the original campsite.

THE LUNA SHIPWRECK Tristan de Luna, a governor and conquistador, had originally sailed to

the Emerald Coast to establish the first Spanish settlement north of Mexico, but in 1559 seven of de Luna’s 13 ships sank during a hurricane along with all of their contents. An underwater archaeologist found one of the ships in 1992, including its 10-foot-tall anchor and a silhouette carving of the ship. A second ship was discovered a mere 400 yards away more than a decade later, making Pensacola home to the second-oldest shipwrecks ever found in U.S. waters.

AT THE WHEEL

A Star Attraction

CAPT. STEVE WILSON SHARES HIS LOVE OF THE OCEAN WITH VISITORS

SCOTT HOLSTEIN

BY JASON DEHART

HE’S SAILED THROUGH MONSTER-SIZED WAVES, battled against harrowing winds and even faced down an engine room fire. Over the course of more than 20 years of sea service, Capt. Steve Wilson has skidded across more than 300,000 miles of ocean as the captain of ocean-going tugs, government vessels and specialty ships. “I’ve sailed into every deep draft port on the east coast, west coast, Gulf of Mexico, Caribbean, Panama and Central America. I have sailed through 50-foot seas and hurricaneforce winds. I have experienced a major engine room fire at

sea, and these experiences have tempered me with salt and steel,” said the 57-year-old sailor. But those days of high seas adventure are far astern. These days, Wilson is quite content to peacefully cruise Destin’s emerald waters in the Southern Star, the 149-passenger, glass-bottom boat that’s perfect for bringing vacationers face-to-face with dolphin and other denizens of the deep. Seventeen years ago he and his wife, Wendy, moved from Ocean Springs, Mississippi, to Destin to pioneer the resort town’s premier dolphin cruise. They’re located at the HarborWalk Village Marina.

SCOTT HOLSTEIN

AT THE WHEEL

“Destin was ideally suited to us,” Wilson said. “It was a growing marketplace, and geographically the Gulf of Mexico was available for dolphin watching and good weather, and the Choctawhatchee Bay was available for dolphin watching when the weather really didn’t allow it. If it’s rough in the Gulf we can cruise in the bay and harbor and accomplish our goals. Destin is one of the most beautiful places God ever created, and that’s an extra bonus.” Since they’ve been in business, they’ve logged more than 8,000 dolphin sightings and remain a beloved attraction. “It doesn’t matter what country guests are from or what language they speak, dolphins are international and everyone loves them,” Wilson said. “I never tire of seeing the dolphins and never tire of the joy they bring.” Wilson recently talked about his life and work, and what’s in store for future guests. ND: Tell us about Destin’s original dolphin cruise vessel. SW: She’s a big, beautiful double-deck boat and is custom-built. I designed her along with help from my family. She was built in 2000, built of aluminum and cost over a million dollars. She offers a full snack bar with soft drinks, hot dogs, T-shirts and souvenirs. In addition to the dolphins we listen to music, and we invite children to the bridge to meet the captain and even steer the ship. ND: What is it about dolphins that people love so much? SW: I don’t really know. Maybe it’s the perpetual style they always seem to have. Maybe it’s their freedom. Or maybe it’s just the 26

Whatever it is, it never seems to grow old. ND: What kind of sea life have you encountered? SW: During our summer season you may see anything. We’ve seen green turtles, leatherbacks, loggerheads and the rare Kemp’s Ridley turtle. We’ve also seen stingrays, spotted eagle rays, sharks and even on occasion we will see manatees. CRAFT BEER

C

raft brews have been growing in popularity over the last decade around the U.S., and the movement is now taking hold in Northwest Florida. What started as a trend in home brewing has grown to become big business in cities across the country. According to the Brewers Association, there are now more than 4,000 craft breweries nationwide. In Florida, there were a reported 111 craft breweries in 2014, and that number is steadily growing. And why not? Craft beers reflect the local community. Created in small batches, they are customized and often incorporate innovative brewing techniques that produce specialty flavors that cannot be achieved through mass production. Here along the Emerald Coast, craft breweries are celebrating a growing fan base. While McGuire’s Irish Pub was the first to serve up its own locally brewed beer more than 25 years ago, there are now a variety of breweries producing micro-brews in South Walton, Destin and Fort Walton Beach. Here’s what’s brewing around town: BY TRACY LOUTHAIN

Inspired by the success of a friend’s microbrewery in Nashville, Jamey Price launched Grayton Beer, which doubled production in the last two years.

GRAYTON BEER COMPANY The vision of founder Jamey Price, Grayton Beer Company produces some of the most wellknown locally brewed beers. Building upon the success of its original brew, 30A Beach Blonde Ale, Grayton Beer Company now brews many different styles of beer. In fact, the local brewery has more than doubled beer production in just two short years, growing from 4,000 barrels in 2014 to more than 9,000 barrels in 2015. While the growth has been exciting, Price says “he is simply happy doing something he enjoys.” “I have always had a passion for drinking, and I’ve always enjoyed craft beer,” said Price. “I spent time in California, Nevada and Colorado visiting small independent brewery bars. Then my friend from Vicksburg, Mississippi, opened Yazoo Brewery in Nashville, and I thought; There is a movement taking shape. I have the opportunity to be part of it.” A regular visitor to 30A, Price launched Grayton Beer Company on Jan. 1, 2014. Located in Santa Rosa Beach, Grayton Beer has three distinct offerings — annuals (beers available year-round), artist series (specialty

limited release styles) and barrel aged (750 ml cork and cage, aged small batch beers). The original brew, 30A Beach Blonde Ale, was created to bridge the gap between lager and ale. It is what Price calls the “gateway beer.” Next, he introduced two additional annuals: the Grayton Pale Ale, hop-forward beer, and the 1890 Founder’s Ale, an amber ale. Price is particularly fond of the artist series line as it allows the brew team to celebrate creativity and seasonality. One such artist series beer is the Franklin County Stout, an oyster stout named for the county which supplies the majority of the oysters to the Emerald Coast. Another artist series beer is the Redneck Rye-viera, their Harvest Ale. Each fall, Grayton Beer releases a Harvest Ale, which they create by using fresh hops brewed within 24 hours of harvest.

“We get fresh hops from a different location each year so the harvest ale is always unique. Last year the hops came from Oregon, this year Michigan, and next year it will be different,” said Price. Another point of pride for Price is their barrel aged series. These small batch custom beers are brewed, then aged in different barrels, enabling the product to take on the characteristics of the barrel. From French Oak to Tequila barrels, barrel fermentation is growing in popularity. This year, the brew team will infuse their barrels with fresh ingredients such as lemon grass, cold-pressed fruit, and ginger resulting in different flavor profiles of beer from a single batch. The addition of their barrel-aged line has led to an exciting partnership with Krutz Family Cellars winery. Their 2014 “Magnolia” chardonnay barrels have been used to create a new brew called “Treble Hook,” a Belgium-style triple. “Treble Hook is a Belgium strong ale with a 9.5 alcohol content,” said Price. “The bottle actually looks like a wine bottle and will be packaged for group consumption.” Grayton Beer is also introducing an IPA. Named Fish Whistle, the new IPA will be a light body India pale ale. “Fish Whistle will be a nice complement to our White Dunes, a Belgium White,” said Price. “Most importantly, we’re focused on quality and consistency. We’ve hired a microbiologist from Harvard to oversee our quality control and ensure consistency.” While most of their signature annual beers are available at bars and restaurants along the Florida Panhandle, the best way to taste Grayton Beer is at the Grayton Beer Taproom, located within the South Walton Industrial Plaza in Santa Rosa Beach. Open Thursday and Friday from 4–8 p.m. and Saturday noon–6 p.m., guests can try all their annuals as well as the artist series and coveted small batch barrel aged beers.

You won't find a Man O' War at Idyll Hounds Brewing Company, however you can quench your thirst with a hearty Man O' Wheat.

IDYLL HOUNDS BREWING COMPANY “Our beers are pretty malty, hoppy in flavor,” said Hansen. “In addition to the annual brews, we also do seasonal, one-off beers.” “We’re working on a couple of new styles,” continued Hansen. “We’d like to add two to three new signature beers this year.” Craft beer experts, including Bart Watson, chief economist for the Brewers Association, are predicting surges in sessionable styles, sours like gose and berliner weisse as well as more fruit infused takes on existing styles. Emerald Coast breweries, including Idyll Hounds, are watching these trends along with what local beer drinkers want. “We’re looking at adding a pale ale as well as a lager,” said Hansen. “We’re also considering a berliner weisse, a sour wheat beer, which would be a light, easy drinking beer that is tart and refreshing.”

The Idyll Hounds taproom is the best place to try their flagship and seasonal beers on tap. The taproom features 24 taps, pouring Idyll Hounds brews as well as other local craft beers. The Idyll Hounds taproom is open Monday–Friday, 9 a.m.–5 p.m., and Saturday, noon–6 p.m. and is pet-friendly.

Down the street from Grayton Beer is another local brewery, Idyll Hounds. Idyll Hounds founder Frasier Hansen is equally as passionate about craft beer and micro-brews. Hansen has been brewing beer for more than a decade — first as a home brewer in Salt Lake City and then traveling to England to take courses and study the craft. A regular visitor to 30A since he was a kid, Hansen moved to South Walton and took a job at Summer Kitchen in Rosemary Beach where he met his now partner, Shawn Sherman. “My dad believed in us and agreed to be our investor,” said Hansen. “He was known as ‘The Hound’ and so we named the brewery, Idyll Hounds, after him.” With two flagship beers, Divide & Conch’r (pronounced: conquer), a double IPA and Man O’ Wheat, an American wheat ale, Idyll Hounds has been brewing beer since its launch in October 2014.

hops and dry hopped for an extra kick and is recognized for its golden red color and aromatic bouquet. In 2011, the brew team added the Blonde Bomber, a sweet combination of nugget hops and mild Mount Hood hops. A light, yet medium bodied ale, Blonde Bomber has grown to be the biggest seller and is now available in four-pack 16-oz. cans as well as draught. In addition, their Four Kings Brown Ale and Flying Coffin IPA are on draught in bars and restaurants from Pensacola to the Apalachicola River. The brewery is growing rapidly and recently added four new fermenters to expand brewing capacity to bring a larger variety of styles. Over the past five years, Props Brewery has grown to include more than a dozen signature and seasonal beers. Prop Oil Porter, Luckey O’Neill Vienna Lager, Twin Props Double IPA, are annual craft ales, while the Ghost Rider Stout, Hefeweizen, Back Alley “Pail” Ale, Rye of Tiger, Ocktober Fest, Black Widow IPA, Inara’s Strawberry Blonde and Jovie Ale (Christmas beer), among others are brewed seasonally. CHASE YAKABOSKI

Located just over the Brooks Bridge in Fort Walton Beach, Props Brewery & Grill was a pioneer in the craft beer movement along the Emerald Coast. Founded in 2011, Props Brewery has been rapidly expanding ever since. “Nathan Vannatter and I were transferred to the 6th Special Operations Squadron at Hurlburt Field from Dyess Air Force Base in Abilene, Texas,” said Head Brewer and Co-Owner Mike Kee. “We had one conversation about opening a restaurant and decided we should make it a brew/pub. The rest is history.” The first beer Props introduced was the Four Kings, a traditional American brown ale. Aptly named after Nathan’s family, who for four generations has made “King” their middle name, Four Kings is brewed using caramel malts, which give it a slight caramel flavor and strong brown color. Next, the founders added the Flying Coffin IPA. This IPA is named in honor of the 39th Airlift Squadron whose original patch was designed as a winged coffin. While the patch design was originally rejected, the craft beer remains popular today. Created using caramel malt and two-row malts, the Flying Coffin IPA is brewed with Chinook

For Nathan Vannatter and Mike Kee, thoughts about a restaurant, given a little time to ferment, became plans for a brew pub instead.

In addition to its original craft beers, what sets Props Brewery apart is its aviation-themed brew pub. With an original Carter Transport Plane propeller from WWII, Props honors aviation history and the many active military serving at one of three local bases, Eglin AFB, Duke Field and Hurlburt Field as well as the newly acquired 7th Special Forces Group. The menu features creative selections, ranging from the signature handmade Buffalo Mac & Cheese and hand cut fries to classic chicken wings. Craft beer enthusiasts will be pleased to learn that Props Brewery has big plans for the future. “We’re planning more locations, and more taproom-style venues around the Panhandle,” says Kee.

DESTIN BREWERY Located in the heart of Destin is the Emerald Coast’s newest brewery, Destin Brewery. Founded in June 2015, Destin Brewery is focused on creating a really good product that locals will be proud to call their hometown brew. Founder Kelly Taylor is currently brewing four flagship beers: Destin Ale (a light blonde ale), East Pass IPA (slightly lighter body, beach friendly ale), Red Sky Rye (a rye pale ale, brewed with local honey) and the Bridge Rubble Double (a double IPA whose name is inspired by the sunken Destin Bridge). “One of the joys of visiting Destin Brewery is trying the uncommon ales,” said

Taylor. “The Uncommons are produced only once. During the spring, we will brew an Uncommon Wheat, an aromatic wheat beer. For the summer, we’ll brew an Uncommon Blonde, an Uncommon Saison and an Uncommon Brown. The Uncommon Pecan Brown Ale begins with a sweet start from local Destin honey and Gulf Coast molasses but has a semi-dry and nutty finish from the fresh roasted pecans.” Destin Brewery’s next introduction will be a beer for sushi. Made with sushi rice in the mash, the brew will be a rice lager and available on draught at local sushi restaurants including Bamboo Sushi Bar and Hibachi Express in Niceville.

“We invite locals and visitors to visit the brewery. We have taps on the side of the cooler, and you can sample anything on the wall,” said Taylor. “We hope to introduce organized tours. In the meantime, we invite the public to stop by and try our different pilot beers. We brew real small batches to get feedback. What people like goes into the uncommons and what they don’t like, we drink.” Taylor continued, “Our goal is to make good beer that locals and visitors want. We want to stay local. We’re brewing beer for the Florida Panhandle.”

HOW TO TAP INTO THESE LOCAL BREWERIES?

BEYOND THE TAPROOM Looking to try several craft beers in one location? The Craft Bar is a one-stop shop. At the Craft Bar’s Grand Boulevard location, 30 taps include some of the most popular beers from Grayton Beer, Idyll Hounds and Destin Brewery. For those spending the day at the Destin Harbor, The Other End Restaurant and Beer Garden features a solid selection of local beers including beers from Destin Brewery and Idyll Hounds as well as perfect paired menu items such as Belgian fries, pretzels and charcuterie plates. In South Walton on Highway 30A, Growler Garage features Grayton Beer and Idyll Hounds brews on tap. Another opportunity to experience the Craft Beer movement along the Emerald Coast is to make plans to attend one of local craft beer festivals held each fall. From the Destin Beer Festival hosted by Wine World and The Craft Bar in September to the Baytowne Wharf Beer Fest at Sandestin in October, the Emerald Coast shares some of the most popular styles from micro-breweries locally as well as throughout the nation.

THESE MOTHER-DAUGHTER DUOS GREW INTO BUSINESS SUCCESS STORIES BY LISA MCKINNEY // PHOTOGRAPHY BY SCOTT HOLSTEIN

There is no family dynamic more complex than the one that exists between a mother and her daughter — an emotional blend of equal parts rebelliousness and devotion, respect and regret. Now imagine going into business together. Does the idea sound like a nightmare — or the chance of a lifetime? Can mothers and daughters really work well together? Placing two family members in business together might seem like one way to set the stage for explosive results. But in fact, when today’s new generation of moms and daughters join entrepreneurial forces, both have the chance to win and make a good living. Historically, bringing the kids into a family business usually meant grooming a son to take over, but the steady rise of women in the work force has progressively changed things. Mothers and daughters are jumping on the small business train and reaping personal, as well as financial, rewards. In an unsteady and often unpredictable economy, it’s wonderful to watch a small company succeed but more so when it’s kept all in the family. These three mother-daughter teams attest to how feminine ambition and tenacity can be a profitable partnership.

FUNKY MEETS CLASSY Set on picturesque 30A, The Blue Giraffe is a charming boutique run by a mother-daughter pair that possesses a combination of feminine wisdom and Southern class. This unique shop offers a good example of exactly how a successful business should run. Christi Sheffield and her mother, Debbie Taylor agree that the store is a success because their personalities and work habits are complementary. Born out of a mutual love of books and art, the two women bought an existing art boutique in 2010 and expanded it to include books by local authors, a wide variety of jewelry and textural art, including paintings, home décor and inspirational curios. A particular strength of their small business is their ability to respond quickly to changing economic conditions. Taylor believes that part of their success is due to knowing their customers personally, as well as their ability to meet local and tourist desires for funky decor. “We fell in love with this shop and wanted to keep the heart and soul of the business when we bought it,” Taylor says. “We surround ourselves with ‘beachy’ art

38

that is happy, feel-good and colorful,” Sheffield adds. “It’s a very happy place to work.” When asked about how they maintain a professional relationship in a swirl of personal family dynamics, Taylor says, “We never argue. We had a great relationship before, but now it’s even better. We even schedule time to talk business.” Clearly the division of labor is part of the key to this harmonious relationship and upbeat attitude. “Christi deals with the day-to-day business, the artists and the bookkeeping. She also handles the inventory aspect. I handle the budgeting, marketing and financial end,” Taylor explains. Both agree there is no way they could or would want to keep separate their personal and professional roles. This twosome believes that their greatest asset is the fact that they are best friends. The Blue Giraffe shows the work of artists and designers utilizing a unique mixture of mediums. The shop offers art classes, promotes featured artists and markets art through its website. This business is an endeavor of the heart mixed with old-fashioned common business sense and class.

Both inside and outside of the their cheery shop, Christi Sheffield (left) and Debbie Taylor (right) live their motto: “No drama, be happy.”

After 21 years as small business owners, the only thing Susan Henry (left) and Courtney Hood (right) do not “haggle” over is who loves running a family business together more.

OLD TREASURES WITH A NEW TWIST Working together for this effervescent mother-daughter partnership is “second nature.” Susan Henry and Courtney Hood opened the doors to Ava’s Attic, a consignment shop, in 2009. They grew steadily from 1,400 square feet of space into a 12,000-square-foot section of a strip mall where the business currently resides. The Henry family has owned and operated one business or another for more than 38 years. What better way to learn the ropes than in the security of your own family? Now Hood and Henry, have established their own niche in the business world. This cheerful team turned a few storage units of extra furniture into a successful and thriving consignment shop. The store is literally packed with thousands of high-end, name brand items from furniture to shoes and everything in between. “I didn’t want to do it, but mom made me write a business plan,” Hood jokes. “I just wanted to start selling stuff.” “Like every good mother-daughter relationship, I tell her what to do and she does what she wants. That’s why we’re successful,” Henry says with a laugh. She believes a huge part of their relationship is that they have opposite personalities and at the same time share traits that make working together a treat. Hood agrees. “Courtney is the fashionista and works on the clothing and accessories side. I’m more of a jeans-and-T-shirt kind of girl so I stick to the furniture side. We get to work together but have our own sides of the business to run,” Henry explains. “Courtney is very organized and task-oriented. She does the books and paperwork. I’m the chatty one so I get to do the fun stuff. I can talk to anyone,” Henry adds. They both agree they have discovered a very nice balance in their relationship that equates to a large profitable business.

This is truly a family affair. Brother Brett Henry and dad, Tommy Henry, do lots of the heavy lifting and moving for the ambitious women who rule the consignment shop. It’s not even uncommon to see a few dogs and a grandchild roaming in and out of the rows of endless items. With understanding that the economy is precarious, Ava’s Attic donates unsold inventory to Caring and Sharing, which donates to families in need. All the hard work this extremely friendly pair has put in has definitely paid off.

TREATS AND SWEETS Local business owners Nicole and Vanessa Poch have their own ideas about what defines a family business. While this mother-daughter twosome doesn’t share a business, A Cupcakery by the Sea and 3 Dogs and a Chick operate next door to each other, offering tasty treats for both humans and their four-legged canine friends. In 2004, Nicole Poch began baking doggie treats in her home and selling them in local farmer’s markets while working as a second grade teacher. When customers were “begging” for more dog treats, she collared her courage and started her business. “I have a passion for both dogs and baking, so this was the perfect marriage of my interests,” Poch says. Through hard work and the support of her family, the teacher-turned-baker expanded from a work area in her home to a 5,000-square-foot space. Even though her responsibilities have changed from teaching children to pampering pets, she still finds the time to make all the dog cookies by hand. Nicole’s mom, Vanessa Poch, has always been sweet on the idea of running her own business. In 2010, she made the jump to small business owner when she opened A Cupcakery by the Sea. She came up with the idea after noticing that Fort Walton Beach didn’t offer the latest culinary craze — a cupcakery. “Baking has always been something I enjoyed, but the cupcake design and creations we produce are what I really

40

BE MAGAZINE

enjoy most,” the cupcake baker said. Her specialties include cupcake concoctions such as Pink Champagne, Milk and Cookies and Chocolate Overload. Becoming the girl-business next door made perfect sense. “People bring their dogs to the park for a walk along the water, then come into our shop for doggie treats and pop next door for a cupcake. Dogs are welcome to shop in our store at all times and are welcome to sit in mom’s courtyard while their humans enjoy their cupcakes. It’s just a fantastic arrangement,” says Nicole. These two women may not share the responsibilities of one business, but they often find themselves helping each other out or sharing employees. It’s not unusual to find Nicole frosting cupcakes or Vanessa helping out in the dog bakery. Mom and daughter share daily struggles and triumphs and love working together to come up with creative ideas on treats for both shops. Family businesses have their fair share of conflict and drama, but the biggest advantage they have is implicit trust that each is working to do their best for continued success. Open and honest communication, a good sense of humor and unending love seem to be the cornerstones for these successful teams. For these entrepreneurial mothers and daughters, finding the perfect business partner meant looking close to home and identifying the talents and passions each possessed. Here’s to cashing in on girl power.

Whether baking bones for dogs at 3 Dogs and a Chick or cupcakes for kids at Cupcakes by the Beach, Nicole Poch (left) and Vanessa Poch (right) have figured out the secret ingredients to a successful motherdaughter business.

MEET MO MOSELEY POURING ON THE CHARM AT BUD & ALLEY’S ROOFTOP BAR BY ZANDRA WOLFGRAM // PHOTOS BY CHASE YAKABOSKI

YOU COULD SAY MO MOSELEY is the life of the party every night. At 56 this dashing Bossier City, Louisiana, native with a ready smile has happily poured, shaken and stirred libations for 38 years. Nearly 20 of those years have been gladly spent tending bar on the Rooftop Deck of Bud & Alley’s Waterfront Restaurant in idyllic Seaside on Scenic Highway 30A. Owned and operated by Dave Rauschkolb — who built a beloved award-winning restaurant in part by helping pioneer the farm- and sea-to-table movement in Northwest Florida 30 years ago — can also lay claim to the longest established restaurant in South Walton County. Silver-haired Moseley is as charming and engaging as a bartender could be and clearly loves what he does for a living. “It’s like going to a party every night with different people,” he says with a grin. “You’re pretty

42

popular, because you have the alcohol,” he quips ... something he does often. As to be expected for a warm-weather tourist destination that regularly earns accolades and tops many of the nation’s most coveted travel lists, Bud & Alley’s stays busy year-round with locals in the fall, “snowbirds” in the winter and visitors in the spring and summer. Still, for laid-back Moseley it’s all the same. “I have a lot of customers who come back to see me year after year, so I feel like I serve locals every night — they are sometimes just not from here.” One of Moseley’s secrets to success is being a mind reader for many of his thirsty patrons. “I like to have what they want to drink ready and before they order it,” he says. “My station has several tables, so I sell dinners, too. For my regulars I know what they want.

Mo Moseley has been a fixture at the Rooftop Deck at Bud & Alley’s in Seaside for two decades. He’s a mixologist, certainly, but also a student of creatures of habit.

It makes me feel good knowing I’ve given everyone I serve a good experience.” Moseley started bussing tables at the age of 14 in a lakefront steak and seafood restaurant where his father tended bar in Shreveport, Louisiana. When his father moved to Montgomery, a bartender was needed and he stepped in. He was 18. When waiters needed a break he would mind the bar and wait tables. Though he graduated college with a degree in construction engineering technology, he found a natural fit with the food and beverage industry. He would go on to manage several successful restaurants and even a few discos throughout the Southeast. An avid golfer and tennis player, Moseley grew up vacationing “IT MAKES ME in South Walton with FEEL GOOD his family; when he got older he decided KNOWING THAT to relocate to the Gulf I’VE GIVEN Coast and worked EVERYONE I several upscale eateries SERVE A GOOD until landing his job at Bud & Alley’s, where EXPERIENCE.” he felt his “resume and — Mo Moseley talents were recognized.” After nearly 40 years, Moseley has seen more than a few beverage trends come and go, including the distinct preferences between ladies and gents. “Bourbon has made a comeback as of late for men. Old Fashions are strong with them right now,” he says. “Ladies, they seem to favor flavored martinis.” One of the most requested pours is The Grantini (named for Grant Hill, one of Bud & Alley’s managers). It is made with vodka peach schnapps, fresh mango puree, a splash of orange juice and topped with champagne. But surely the most popular drink at Bud & Alley’s is Moseley’s house-made margarita. It is so often ordered, it has become affectionately known as the Mo-garita. What is the secret to this wildly popular concoction? “I wish I knew that, because if I could bottle it and sell it I’d be a millionaire!” Moseley exclaims throwing up his hands. The Mo-garita paired with the “magical colors” of the setting sun over the Gulf have become a legendary beloved daily ritual known as the Sunset Celebration at Bud & Alley’s. As dusk approaches, patrons, homeowners and staff all gather to watch the sun silently slip into the horizon, the big brass bell sounds to signal the end of another perfect day in Seaside. As is tradition, the person who guesses the exact time of the setting sun wins a complimentary cocktail. “Every night we have a winner,” Moseley assures. This veteran barkeep is deft at making managing one of the busiest bars on the Gulf Coast look seamless and easy. “It can certainly be 44

a challenge, especially in the summer season, but when we make it happen and keep it all going and everyone is having a great time, it’s very rewarding.” And the tips are not bad either, though Moseley is too much a gentleman to “go there” except to say. “It’s something I don’t worry about. If you work your tail off and do a good job that solves itself. But if I am lucky enough to earn a tip of any sort, I do try to make sure I say ‘thank you,’ because I do appreciate it.” As for telling your troubles to this bartender … though he surely would happily listen, that seems to take care of itself, too. “I think people come to Bud & Alley’s and forget about their troubles. It’s just so pretty,” Moseley says. “You are at the beach, you see the surf and the sunsets; just being outside and looking at the Gulf. Even an ugly day here is prettier than most anywhere else.”

Sensational Sandwiches WE PLATE UP 14 OF OUR FAVORITES FROM ALL ALONG THE EMERALD COAST BY ZANDRA WOLFGRAM

1

MATT BURKE

RACQUET CLUB The Breakfast Table, Destin The club sandwich is a classic. This tasty version layers fresh roasted turkey, crisp bacon, garden tomato, Monterey jack cheese and mayo on toasted white bread. Served with your choice of cucumber or potato salad. Now this is a club we are happy to join. $8.50

ANY WAY YOU SLICE IT, the sandwich is almost a sacred food. What’s not to love about a complete meal that you can pick up with your fingers? Ask someone to name their favorite sandwich and they won’t hesitate to tell you exactly how they like theirs. And yet any sandwich survey will surely stack up many different answers. John Montagu (Nov. 13, 1718–April 30, 1792), 4th Earl of Sandwich, claimed to be the eponymous inventor of this food combination. After all these years, the beauty of the sandwich may lie in the vast variety of options. A sandwich is not for the indecisive. There are many decisions to be made. Do you prefer it hot or cold? What kind of meat, or are you thinking vegetarian? What to put it on? Bread? Hoagie? Wrap? Pita? Bun? Roll? Or go rogue (and healthy) and wrap it in lettuce leaves? Americans like sandwiches with cheese, but what cheese? Swiss? Provolone? Muenster? Or something fused with flavor — horseradish cheddar to complement roast beef, or maybe a mellow Colby jack cheese to pair with a honey maple ham? And what is there to layer on? Lettuce and tomato are the most common extras, but you can get creative and add anything you like, from cucumbers and sprouts to prosciutto and pickles … or all of the above. There are few rules with sandwiches, which is another plus. If you can fit it on a sandwich, it’s fair game. Very few go totally topless. When it comes to sandwiches, that would surely be boring, so go for it and top away. Finally, to condiment or not to condiment — that is the question. You can slather mayonnaise, mustard, ketchup or your favorite dressing, or drizzle a little vinegar and oil, or go dry. Dagwood may have been a cartoon character, but he was one of the world’s best when it came to taking the “sky’s the limit” approach to building a great sandwich. With so many options, there is surely a sandwich to sate everyone. If you’re still not sure which is your favorite, perhaps you can try one of ours. During lunch, we hunted all along the coast, and we can easily say there was no shortage of great contenders. But in the end, hands down, we choose the following as the sensational sandwiches of the Emerald Coast. DESTINVACATION.COM

2) GROUPER SANDWICH Dewey Destin’s, Destin Biting into a Grouper Sandwich at Dewey Destin’s is like tasting a bit of local history. Destin is the heart of the Emerald Coast, and Dewey Destin’s is the perfect signature sandwich for this area. It’s served fried, grilled, blackened or bronzed on a white bun with French fries and hush puppies. The original Destin location (down a gravel road off Calhoun Drive) is near the exact spot where Leonard T. Destin landed and the story of The World’s Luckiest Fishing Village began. How’s that for a fresh taste of local lore? $9.95

3) OYSTER BLT Vintij Wine Boutique, Miramar Beach Chef John Jacob and Todd Reber of Vintij Wine Boutique in Miramar Beach serve an Oyster BLT Sandwich that is so popular, it has been a signature item on the menu for more than a decade. This decadent ditty features plump, pan-fried oysters, applewood smoked bacon, wild greens, tomatoes and Brie cheese on homemade toasted bread. With a wine boutique located inside the restaurant, it’s easy to raise a glass to this Vintij offering. $14

4) CLASSIC CAROL Chicken Salad Chick, Destin, and Panama City Beach Why did the chicken cross the road? To eat lunch at Chicken Salad Chick! This cheery eatery features 15 different chicken salad concoctions. All of them start with the ingredients of the Classic Carol and go from there. All of the variations are named after friends of founder Stacy Brown of Auburn, Alabama, whose passion for the perfect chicken salad led her to hatch her own business, which is now a successful franchise. Served on wheat, sourdough, croissant or a hoagie roll (or with crackers). And if you want to be an “original chick,” your meal comes with a pickle spear and a cookie of the day. $5.49–$8.49

5) BIG DADDY BURGER McGuire’s Irish Pub, Destin and Pensacola Though the traditional Irish food and in-house brewery are good, McGuire’s is famous for its giant, hand-trimmed, lean Angus steak burgers. There are 25 different trimmings. We like the Big Daddy Burger with bacon, cheddar and jalapeño, but to really impress, for just a buck more try the Terrible Garbage Burger, which piles on some of everything. $11.99

6) EVERQUAKE Synergy Café, Fort Walton Beach Sometimes your diet falls off the rails. This quaint organic café is a great way to get back on the train to healthy town. Synergy serves breakfast and lunch daily. (On Wednesdays, you can stock up on fresh fruits and veggies from 4 to 6 p.m.) Everything is homemade and organic, and the menu ranges from “turbocharged” shooters and smoothies to salads and sandwiches. The EverQuake includes avocado, tomato, cucumber, sunflower seeds, sprouts and mixed greens tossed in the Evergreen marinade. Ever so good! $10.95

7) LOBSTER ROLL The Shrimp Shack, Seaside You don’t have to head to the East Coast for this seafood classic. Restaurateurs Heavenly and Bill Dawson nibbled their way along the entire Eastern Seaboard in search of an elegant sandwich with an Emerald Coast twist. They offer seafood lovers one of the few Lobster Rolls in the area, if not Northwest Florida. The ingredients say it all: Fresh Florida lobster is served on a toasted bun with romaine lettuce, warm butter and a slice of lemon. Enough said. $21.99

8) CLASSIC AMERICAN GRILLED CHEESE The Melt Down, Seaside We all melt down every once in a while. After tasting the warm, gooey Classic American Grilled Cheese on Texas toast served out of one of Seaside’s iconic Airstream trailers, it’s been very hard not to want to melt down every day. As the Modern English song says, “I’ll stop the world and melt with you!” $5

9) GRILLED BRUSCHETTA CHICKEN SANDWICH Chanticleer Bakery, Grayton Beach Italian herb bread toasted with garlic butter is just the beginning of what’s delicious about this sandwich filled with flavorful grilled chicken, garlic aioli, a generous portion of fresh-made bruschetta and topped with melted provolone cheese. This juicy gem is served with your choice of pasta salad, baby carrots with bleu cheese dressing or chips. $10

GYRO The Aegean, Miramar Beach One bite of the bright flavors of this pita pocket of warm goodness instantly transports you to the sunny shores of Greece. This classic features rotisserie gyro meat, crisp shredded lettuce, ripe tomato and sweet onion drizzled with tangy Tzatziki sauce. The menu says “Live longer, eat like the Greeks.” So eat up! $8.50

12) FRIED GREEN BLT Cabana Café, Miramar Beach There is a movie called “Fried Green Tomatoes,” and we think this sandwich deserves top billing. Cabana Café owner Wayne Anderson says people come for the pizza, but we are partial to the Fried Green BLT. This sandwich features fried green tomatoes, crispy bacon, fresh lettuce and Creole mayo served on Texas toast. We paired ours with homemade potato chips (yes, we said homemade) served with homemade cilantro chip dip. $8.99 50

13) RIB EYE SANDWICH Callahan’s Restaurant and Deli, Destin Callahan’s is famous for its home cooking, and this chargrilled sandwich definitely puts the “c” in comfort food. It centers on chargrilled rib eye steak layered with lettuce, tomato and mayo on a toasted sub roll or with sautéed onions, peppers, mushrooms and mayo. The eyes have it — rib eye, that is. $10.99

14) BARBECUE SANDWICH 98 BarBQue, Santa Rosa Beach Jon Seeling and his wife, Nicole, have turned up the heat on Highway 98, and since it opened in 2006, locals and tourists are drawn to this little Santa Rosa Beach hot spot like moths to a hickory-smoked flame. For traditional barbecue lovers, this little “hole in the wall” serves up a great pulled pork sandwich served with your choice of French fries, creamed corn nuggets, onion rings, coleslaw or potato salad. Wash it down with homemade iced tea. Yee-haw. $8.95

PHOTOS BY MATT BURKE (RIB EYE SANDWICH, CHICKEN SANDWICH, THE TUCKER DUKE, AND BARBECUE SANDWICH) AND SCOTT HOLSTEIN (FRIED GREEN BLT)

THE TUCKER DUKE Tucker Duke’s, Niceville We like any sandwich with sass. Though he hails from Niceville, Chef Brian Cartenuto will not vary this version for anyone, so unless you want a fight on your hands from a recent winner of “Cutthroat Kitchen,” order it as is — topped with fried onions rings, American cheese, tucker sauce, lettuce and tomato. Served with just a little sarcasm. $10

PERSONALITY

JEANNE DAILEY

A PINNACLE OF PASSION, PROFESSIONALISM AND POISE IN BUSINESS BY CHRISTY KEARNEY AND TRACY LOUTHAIN PHOTOS BY ROMONA ROBBINS

AS OWNER AND CHIEF EXECUTIVE OFFICER of NewmanDailey Resort Properties, Jeanne Dailey proves that poise matched with hard work, business acumen and integrity can produce 30 successful years in the tourism industry. Dailey’s business savvy and approachability is perhaps a product of the Toledo, Ohio, native’s Midwestern roots combined with the Southern charm she’s picked up from her adopted home along the Emerald Coast. After following a roommate from East Carolina University, where she earned her bachelor’s degree in marketing, to Northwest Florida in the mid-80s, Dailey interviewed with Randy Newman, who was in the process of building a new real estate and resort properties management company. Dailey proved to be the right fit for the position and made Destin her home. With her new diploma in hand and an eagerness to enter the business world, Dailey took a two-week crash broker’s course and began developing the rental program, selling properties, keeping the books and researching homeowner association opportunities. “I found out I just loved business,” Dailey says of her early years at work. Select members of the small but growing Destin business community helped her with the framework for the fledgling company, then she took the plan and ran with it. “I guess I just had some good instincts,” she recalls with a smile. Dailey has never been afraid to follow her gut, and her willingness to take on a challenge paved the way for her success. She helped launch NewmanDailey Resort Properties in 1985, and by 1988 she was the sole owner of the company, poised to find a place in the emerging Destin tourism market. Dailey not only discovered that place, but also has been instrumental in establishing Northwest Florida as a tourism destination. 52

EXPERIENCE PAYS OFF In April of 2015, Dailey celebrated her company’s 30th anniversary. While the occasion called for celebration, things haven’t always been so rosy. Dailey recalls poor real estate markets, devastating storms and an unexpected oil spill, among other challenges. “Anyone who has been in business for any length of time knows there are going to be ups and downs,” says Dailey. “It’s how you handle them.” “It’s made me a stronger business person than I think I’ve ever been before,” says Dailey, joking that she has upgraded from lotion to turtle wax for the hard outer shell she’s developed in business.

the past 30 years has made Destin and South Walton a better place for future generations. And while she’s not one to seek praise for her efforts, groups such as the Destin Chamber of Commerce who awarded her with the Ann Gibson Community Service Award, the DCWAF who recognized her as 2015 Board Member of the Year and Visit South Walton who recognized her with the prestigious Van Ness Butler Jr. Award, ensures that she knows her work has not gone unnoticed.

Over the last three decades, there have been extraordinary changes along the Emerald Coast. Destin has evolved from a once sleepy fishing village to earning its recent title as one of the “Top 5 Destinations on the Rise” according to TripAdvisor’s Travelers Choice Awards. “Business is dynamic and changing minute by minute instead of day by day,” says Dailey. “That’s what makes it fun and challenging. It’s a matter of taking advantage of the upswings and being smart and strategic through the challenging times.” PAYING IT FORWARD When Dailey is not running her 50-employee company, she is actively involved with numerous community initiatives. “I feel so blessed to have come to this community, to live in this community, raise my children in this community and have a great business in this community,” says Dailey. “I feel so positively and so strongly about this community that I want to give back. It is part of my responsibility.”

Giving back is what she has done. And now she has her thumb on the pulse of many community organizations. She’s serving as the first female president of the Rotary Club of Destin as well as holding active board positions with First Florida Bank as a founding board member, Sacred Heart Hospital of the Emerald Coast Advisory Board and Destin Charity Wine Auction Foundation (DCWAF) Board of Directors as well as chairing the DCWAF marketing committee. And that’s just her core commitments. From there she’s actively involved in helping Food For Thought build a second location/ warehouse in Destin, as well as supporting as many nonprofits as she can through sponsorships and charitable donations. In the vacation rental industry, she’s also an active member of Florida Vacation Rental Managers Association and Vacation Rental Managers Association as well as serves on a customer advisory board for Home Away. It is undeniable that her involvement in the community today as well as over

FAMILY FIRST For Dailey, who has been a single mother for much of her career, family is the most important aspect of her life. She has two children — Tiffany, 30, and Ryan, 28 — and she considers her employees her extended family. Dailey has created a work culture based on care and respect. The NewmanDailey headquarters in Fountain Plaza in Miramar Beach is warm, relaxed and inviting — a reflection of the woman in charge — yet, as one of the main check-in locations for the company in Destin and South Walton, the office is on point and focused on catering to guests and owners. The company culture Dailey has fostered is another example of how she interweaves her personal and professional sensibilities. As one of the only female chief executive officers of a business Newman-Dailey’s size in Northwest Florida, the hospitality veteran has always focused on the work and not the perceived obstacles. “My philosophy has been to hold my head up high, do the best that I can each and every day as honestly and fairly as I can,” she says. Dailey draws from the joy she finds in her own work to guide her staff and young professionals. “Do something that’s fun and challenging,” she encourages. “You have to be willing to fail, and it’s OK if you do because it’s just research.” She believes the secret to her success has been her willingness to take risks. Dailey is thrilled her business has made it 30 years, but is even more excited about the decade ahead. She compares the challenges and excitement of the hospitality industry to an “unbelievable rollercoaster ride.” Fortunately for her, her employees, her clients and the entire Destin and South Walton communities, Dailey is not just along for the ride, but leading the way. “I love roller coasters,” she laughs. “I’ll be in the front car with my hands in the air, screaming and hollering.” NEWMANDAILEY.COM

EDDIE GRAY

HOUSEKEEPING MANAGER, 12 years of service Hometown: Fort Walton Beach When did you start your career at Newman-Dailey and what was your position? I started working at NewmanDailey in November 2003 as a Quality Assurance Inspector. I supported the team and would oversee outdoor spaces — patios, grills, etc. I was also the runner and event support. I helped wherever they needed me. After two years, I was promoted to Property Inspector. Five years later, I became the Housekeeping Manager and have been in this role for five years. What is your favorite aspect of your job? I love this job. It’s hard to point to a specific reason. I just love the family atmosphere. I’ve been here since I was 22 years old. Newman-Dailey is a family to me. It is a fun workplace. Do you remember a career moment that was particularly rewarding? 56

There are many rewarding moments. I am a people person. I enjoy having conversations with our guests. It keeps me motivated. One time, I was in the right place at the right time and able to help an elderly couple unload their groceries and take them to the third floor at Summer Breeze Condominiums. They didn’t know there was not an elevator. They were so appreciative and thankful once we got all their luggage and groceries upstairs and unloaded. It was a good day. What has surprised you about the job? Watching the owner of the company work alongside us. I think it is so rare to work directly with the owner. She is here every Saturday during the summer working alongside the team. I always think there are so many other things she could be doing, but she has always been here on busy Saturdays for the 12 years I’ve been here.

What do you think makes NewmanDailey different? All the employees are so dedicated to their jobs. These are not easy jobs. You may want to find something else but this is a work family. The people genuinely care about you. What do you enjoy doing outside of work? I enjoy spending time with my family and my daughter, Mahogany. Do you recall a special moment you had with Jeanne? There are so many. We’re a great team. I think she really likes it when I drive. She was not feeling well, and I drove us in the van to take all the boxes of food to Food for Thought for their stock the pantry event. I think because she’s usually in the driver seat, it’s nice to be chauffeured for a change. What is one word you’d use to describe Newman-Dailey? Phenomenal!

KAREN POE DIRECTOR OF OPERATIONS 25 years of service Hometown: Selma, Alabama

When did you start your career at Newman-Dailey and what was your position? I moved to the area in 1986 with my husband who was stationed at Eglin Air Force Base. I started at Newman-Dailey on Aug. 27, 1991. I remember because it was my daughter’s 16th birthday. I was hired to take reservations and work the front desk. There were only four of us at that time, so we all did a little of everything. As we grew, we created positions as needed. I became the Guest Relations Manager. Next I was promoted to Office Manager and began handling human resources. I then became Director of the Rental Division overseeing the reservations and front desk team as well as property managers. Today, I serve as the Director of Operations. I’ve always said, “Do a job, do it well and it becomes your job!” What was it like working at NewmanDailey in the early days? We were always figuring it out. When we felt like staff needed morale boosting, we would do skits at our meetings. We would act it out and incorporate roll playing. It lightened the mood and created important bonds. I can remember bringing in a boom box and playing “Lean on Me” after a particularly hard season. It has been fun growing this team from four to 50 and watching people grow. What is your most memorable moment at Newman-Dailey? I remember when we broke ground on this building. Jeanne stood on the dirt and said this is where your office is going to be. In 1999, we moved our office from the AmSouth Bank Building to our brand new office. We were able to spread out and have space! We upgraded to a nine-line phone system. We had made it. We were established. Has the job been challenging and rewarding? There have definitely been challenges over the years. Hard times create bonds and make you stronger. We’ve

banded together to overcome storms, including Opal, Ivan and Dennis, as well as the BP disaster. We’ve had our challenges, but we know it’s going to be okay. Through tenacity and teamwork, we persevere through the challenging times to sunnier days. Do you remember a career moment that was particularly rewarding? My favorite times are when we are able to get out of the office and have time to clear our minds and learn. Advancements in technology have changed our business and made us more efficient. The introduction of the Internet was so exciting! It’s fun to watch the industry grow and evolve. I always enjoy the seminars, hearing best practices and making sure we are on track. We’ve gone to Las Vegas, Aspen, Snowmass, New Orleans and many other cities. We’re always learning and growing. What do you enjoy doing outside of work? I enjoy boating, gardening and spending time with family. It is nice to enjoy this beautiful destination and rest and recharge when we are not working. KAREN ANN HASCH ACCOUNTING DIRECTOR, 15 years of service Hometown: Fort Devens, Massachusetts When did you move to Destin, and what brought you here? I moved to the area in 2000. CNN covered the top 10 places to live in the United States and Fort Walton Beach made the list, so we moved from Louisville to Florida, looking for a simpler life. What did you think when you arrived? Like everyone who comes to the Destin area, we found incredible beaches. But more than that, behind this tourist town is a tight-knit, family friendly community. When did you start your career at Newman-Dailey and what was your position? I really got lucky. I had only been living in Destin for about a month. I saw in the newspaper that Newman-Dailey was hiring for an HOA bookkeeper. I didn’t even know what an HOA was, but I did know “bookkeeper.” Since my background is in accounting/banking, I decided to call 58

them and see if I could meet with them for an interview. I went in that afternoon and was hired the next morning. I held the HOA bookkeeper position for my first seven years with Newman-Dailey. In 2007, we had some staff turnover in the corporate accounting office. I was asked to help out in the interim. This challenge was very rewarding. In 2008, I was promoted to Accounting Division Director, the position that I still hold today. Has the job been challenging and rewarding? Both. This industry is not easy. The competition, the Internet and the technology improvements and advances are all things you need to be aware of at all times. Our guests chose us, and we are responsible for helping create their vacation memories. We take that responsibility seriously, and knowing that we do this well is very rewarding.

What has surprised you about Newman-Dailey? Being a military “brat” I never wanted to stay anywhere for very long. It wasn’t long after I started working here I said to myself, “I will retire here,” and that surprised me. I still feel that way today. I love my NewmanDailey family and our owners and guests. I wouldn’t want to be anywhere else! What do you enjoy doing outside of work? Playing tourist of course! Spending time enjoying Destin with my husband, Mike, and daughter, Stacie. My son, Darren, plays college baseball in Kansas and we often travel to watch him play. Thursday night bowling league! What is one word you’d use to describe Newman-Dailey? A lot of words come to mind … but the one feeling, is HOME!

KERBI ANCONA OFFICE MANAGER, 20 years of service Hometown: Statts, West Virginia

When did you start your career at NewmanDailey and what was your position? I moved to the area in 1984 and rented an apartment at Gulf Crest Patio Homes near Woodland Shores, NewmanDailey’s original property. Jeanne and I knew each other for 10 years before coming to work at NewmanDailey. I started when we were at the AmSouth Bank Building at the front desk. Now, I manage the front desk and oversee the rental division. What is great about working at NewmanDailey? I enjoy coming to work in a place where I feel valued. At Newman-Dailey, your voice is heard. From the CEO to co-workers, everyone values your opinion and input. It is also a family atmosphere. From co-workers to the guests, we’re like an extended family. What is your most memorable moment at Newman-Dailey? I remember when Jeanne called me in for the job interview. Even then she made you feel like you were valued and welcomed to the family. Over the years, there have been so many rewarding moments, and Jeanne is always there to provide support and encouragement both professionally and personally. Do you remember a career moment that was particularly rewarding? It is always rewarding. Families come in and we see mom pregnant. Then we see them come back and watch kids grow up. Now, we’re welcoming the grandkids and seeing three generations. Our guests tell us it is fun for them as well to come home to the beach and see the same faces year after year. They see us; they see their friends and neighbors. It’s like a reunion at the beach. We also get very attached to our winter guests. They really become part of our family for the season. What motivates you? Watching Jeanne Dailey. She sets an incredible example. To see Jeanne here, roll up her sleeves and work on a Saturday, it makes everyone

feel motivated. She’s always building you up. It is the example that she sets. We just follow. What is your favorite aspect of your job? Coming to work and having great people to work with and talk to. We have an incredible team. It is always fun welcoming the guests, especially those who are thrilled to be at the beach! Even the challenges are fun, because we work together as a team. It is always fun to turn an unhappy guest around or solve a problem together. I wake up and think, I can’t wait to go to work! What do you enjoy doing outside of work? My favorite thing to do is watch the beautiful coastal sunsets. I also enjoy yard work and sewing as a way to relax and unwind. TRENDS

A REBOUNDING MARKET ALONG THE EMERALD COAST

LIKE THE GULF COAST’S tidal conditions, the Emerald Coast real estate market is in a constant state of change. Fortunately, recent trends show a rising tide lifting all boats. According to the Emerald Coast Association of Realtors (ECAR), real estate sales along the Emerald Coast in 2015 increased 16.1 percent over the previous year. In addition, reports from ECAR show increased demand with the average number of cumulative days for listings on market decreasing from 150 days in December 2014 to 140 days in December 2015. While the housing market, like any other financially driven sector, can be precarious, analyzing past market conditions is helpful in predicting the future. According to FloridaRealtors. org, last year the Florida real estate market ended with strong gains, including increases in closed sales, more new listings and higher median prices compared to the year before. Dr. Brad O’Connor, Florida Realtors® chief economist, has been predicting what’s next for Florida’s residential real estate sector. “In 2015, we saw very strong growth in both sales and prices for existing homes in Florida, particularly over the first three quarters of the year,” Dr. O’Connor said. “We expect these positive trends in Florida’s economy to continue into 2016, which is in stark contrast to much of the rest of the country, as nationwide growth in GDP and employment is expected to remain somewhat sluggish.”

Florida Realtors® President Matey H. Veissi is also optimistic, stating, “Home prices are rising at a more moderate pace while closed sales remain strong. Florida’s economy is in growth mode, more jobs are being created and mortgage interest rates remain at historically low levels, which will continue to drive the state’s housing market in 2016.” Along the Emerald Coast, the median sales price for residential homes, including single-family homes and condominiums in Walton and Okaloosa counties, has been growing over the last five years. If these trends continue, the real estate market along the Emerald Coast is poised to celebrate another year of positive growth.

THINGS TO DO

GOING COASTAL 10 MUST-DO ACTIVITIES WITH KIDS IN DESTIN BY JESSICA TURNER, FOUNDER OF THE MOM CREATIVE (THEMOMCREATIVE.COM) AND AUTHOR OF THE FRINGE HOURS: MAKING TIME FOR YOU

OUR FALL FAMILY VACATION to Destin was unforgettable. At the time, our kids were 7, 4 and 9 months. Part of our vacation was spent with friends who have a 2-year-old and a 4-year-old. That’s a lot of little ones! While it could have been stressful, instead it was full of fun and memory making. We stayed in a Newman-Dailey vacation rental for our vacation, which was perfect for when we weren’t out enjoying all that Destin has to offer. If you are planning a trip to Destin with young kids, hopefully this list will help you plan some fun activities to enjoy. 84

10 THINGS TO DO WITH KIDS IN DESTIN 1 Spend time on the beach Without question, the No.1 thing to do in Destin is simply enjoy the beaches. The powder-like sand is incredibly smooth. We have vacationed on beaches on the Atlantic, Pacific and Gulf before and this was our favorite. One day we canceled our plans to go do an activity just so we could have more time on the beach. The water is also crystal clear and the waves aren’t overwhelming. Perfect for young children.

2 Play at The Track Our kids LOVED this small amusement park! Elias said it was one of his favorite things we did while in Destin. They have activities for children and adults. We spent most of our time in “Kiddie Kountry” which had a bunch of fair-type rides for kids under 4 feet. This area wasn’t crowded, which also made it enjoyable. In addition, The Track has bumper water boats, which are an absolute blast. Be prepared to get wet though. The Track also has two mini golf courses, go karts, an arcade, bungee jumping and more. We went

Newman-Dailey is that vacationers receive a free adult pass per day to go on this cruise.) We saw dozens of dolphins. Some came right up and swam along our boat, and a few even jumped in our wake. It was incredible. All the kids on the boat were given the opportunity to “drive” it with the captain, which was a fun experience for them.

4 Walk Along the Harbor The Destin harbor is beautiful. Kids will love seeing all the boats, visiting the shops and taking in life on the water.

5 Attend a Local Festival FUN FOR ALL The Turners – Adeline, Elias, Matthew, Jessica and Ezra – pose for a traditional beach portrait (right). While vacationing at zero elevation, Elias (above) found a way to visit the treetops.

one evening and the mini golf was very crowded, so that is definitely something to consider. At first my seven-year-old son Elias was disappointed that we weren’t going to mini golf, but then he told us that the rides were “way more fun than mini golf would have been.” We Agree! When you stay with Newman-Dailey, you receive a “rechargeable” card to use at The Track every day.

3 Enjoy a Dolphin Cruise Destin is known for its dolphin cruises, and the Sea Blaster Dolphin Cruise that we went on did not disappoint. (A perk of staying with

Destin always has events going on! While we were there, it was the Destin Seafood Festival. The harbor was full of vendors, fresh food and kid-friendly activities.

6 Visit the Pirates Play Cover & Splash Pad at Destin Commons

While there, be sure to buy some food to feed the alligators. They jump in the air to get the food and my kids loved it! Fudpuckers also has a photo experience where you can hold an alligator and have your picture taken. After you experience the alligators, definitely stay for a meal. The menu is huge and offers something for everyone (they had multiple Gluten-free/Whole30 options). We absolutely loved our experience there.

8 Eat at The Donut Hole Known for its incredible selection of donuts, this place has a line out the door by 7:30 am. We got there at 7:15 and were able to be seated almost immediately. On The Donut Hole’s donut menu, we had a choice of 25 different kinds of donuts.

9 Explore The Gulfarium

7 Encounter 100+ Gators at Fudpuckers

We were not able to carve out time to visit the Gulfarium, but it offers an array of sealife and animals including dolphins, stingrays, penguins, turtles and many more. My children always love visiting an aquarium and this is something we will try to do on our next visit.

Fudpuckers is a Destin classic, opening its doors more than 30 years ago. It offers a free exhibit of more than 100 alligators, including a rare albino alligator (only 50 exist in the world!). The staff is extremely knowledgeable about gators and made the experience extra memorable.

Destin offers several kid-friendly art classes. Mary Hong’s children’s and adult glass art classes at the Shard Shop look especially amazing. (Her gallery is located approximately 25 miles east of Destin in South Walton in Grayton Beach.)

Destin Commons is a big outdoor mall in Destin with a darling play place and splash pad in its center. While our family didn’t experience the splash pad (it closes in the “off” season), we had a great time in the play area.

GROCERY/FOOD STORES PUBLIX AT PARADISE KEY 4425 Commons Drive, Destin (850) 837-9094

Healthier Snack Swaps FOR ENERGETIC, on-the-move kids, snacks are just as important as meals. They provide another opportunity to pack nutrition into a child’s day, and they help maintain a child’s seemingly endless energy to explore their world. Kids get just as much instant gratification from natural snacks as from less healthy options — and parents get more peace of mind. The name of the game with snacks is to keep them quick and easy. Pack your pantry and fridge with the following foods so kids can grab and eat them without needing any help: >> “Finger fruits” like grapes, strawberries, cherries, raspberries and cherry tomatoes >> Easy-to-handle fruits like apples, pears, plums and bananas >> B aby carrots, pre-cut bell peppers and radishes, bite-sized chunks of squash,

celery — with optional dips or spreads >> String cheese, cheese cubes or pre-sliced cheese >> Hard-boiled eggs >> Cereal and granola
