Thinking Chinese Translation A Course in Translation Method: Chinese to English Valerie Pellatt and Eric T. Liu, both at Newcastle University, UK Series: Thinking Translation

Thinking Chinese Translation explores the ways in which memory, general knowledge, and creativity (summed up as ’schema’) contribute to the linguistic ability necessary to create a good translation. The course develops the reader’s ability to think deeply about the texts and to produce natural and accurate translations from Chinese into English.

A wealth of relevant illustrative material is presented, taking the reader through a number of different genres and text types of increasing complexity including: technical, scientific and legal texts; journalistic and informative texts; literary and dramatic texts. Each chapter provides a discussion of the issues of a particular text type based on up-to-date scholarship, followed by practical translation exercises. The chapters can be read independently as research material, or in combination with the exercises. The issues discussed range from the fine detail of the text, such as punctuation, to the broader context of editing, packaging and publishing translations. Major aspects of teaching and learning translation, such as collaboration, are also covered. Thinking Chinese Translation is essential reading for advanced undergraduate and postgraduate students of Chinese and translation studies. The book will also appeal to a wide range of language students and tutors through the general discussion of the principles and purpose of translation.

• a clear, logical structure • a blend of communicative, research-based and traditional exercises • a wide range of activities covering the four key linguistic skills as well as intercultural skills • authentic texts (with extracts from Le Monde, L’Express, Le Nouvel Observateur and Libération) • guidance and practical tips for effective and independent learning. ’I’ll certainly order it for our Departmental Study-Room!’ – Sara Poole, University of Reading, UK

The Routledge Dictionary of Cultural References in Modern French reveals the hidden cultural dimension of contemporary French, as used in the press, going beyond the limited and purely lexical approach of the traditional bilingual dictionary. Even foreign learners of French who possess a good level of French often have difficulty in fully understanding French articles, not because of any linguistic shortcomings on their part but because of their inadequate knowledge of the cultural references. This cultural dictionary of French provides the reader with clear and concise explanations of the crucial cultural dimension behind the most frequently used words and phrases found in contemporary French press. This vital background information, gathered here in this innovative and entertaining dictionary, will allow readers to go beyond a superficial understanding of the French press to see the hidden yet implied cultural significance that is so transparent to the native speaker. Key features: • a broad range of newspaper language covered, from punning to historical references • over 3,000 cultural references explained

Routledge

Modern Grammars Routledge Modern Grammars provide up-to-date exercises and tasks for language learners of all levels, from beginner to advanced. The Modern Grammars are divided into two parts. Part A covers traditional grammatical categories such as agreement, nouns, verbs and adjectives. Part B is carefully organized around language functions covering all major communication situations. No prior knowledge of grammatical terminology is assumed and a glossary of grammatical terms is provided. Each grammar is accompanied by a Modern Grammar Workbook, which provides a wealth of exercises graded in difficulty, clear cross-referencing to the Modern Grammars, topical exercises designed to develop the user’s vocabulary base and a complete answer key. These modern grammars are available in: • Mandarin Chinese (p8) • French • German (p16) • Italian • Russian (p27) • Spanish • Portuguese of Brazil (p25)

I am the author of the Michel Thomas courses to learn spoken Mandarin. Innovative approaches to language teaching is one of my passions. So I am always on the lookout for texts and resources to support me in my journey. I have used most of the Chinese grammars out there. This is far and away the best. The entire series is outstanding. Why? Because it’s totally practical without getting stuck in grammatical obscurities. It reflects the actual, contemporary use of the language as it is used by ordinary, educated speakers. The first half of the book reviews all aspects of the grammar in a user-friendly way. The second half of the volume deals with how to express anything you could wish to say in contemporary Chinese using the patterns of the language as would a native speaker. Over the time I spent designing cutting edge courses for English (and now also French) speakers to really learn to speak Mandarin in the least amount of time this book was one of my most valuable resources. I cannot recommend it enough. What I have found is that I continue to return to Modern Chinese Grammar year after year and am always happily surprised with its simple explanation of potentially complex topics. – Amazon.com customer review

According to a widely accepted hypothesis, the Khoesan languages represent the smallest of the four language families in Africa, geographically distributed mainly in Botswana and Namibia. Today, only 40 or so Khoesan languages may still exist, with about 120,000 native speakers. In other words, most Khoesan languages were already extinct before a sound scholarly interest in them could begin to develop. This volume presents descriptive, typological, historico-comparative and socio-linguistic material on Khoesan, much of it drawn from the author’s own field work.
